Why change the app?

I find the new app to be very difficult to use. When I opened the newspaper this morning I was presented with an edition from 2 days ago and can’t figure out how to do so. The old app, while not great, was easier to use.

Want the old app back

The old app was great. Easy to use, you could print the Sudoku, you could easily go back and look at past editions, it was easy to navigate to where you wanted to go, you didn’t have to deal with pop-up ads every time you click on a story, you could listen to an article (in a very robotic voice) when reading is difficult. That all changed with this new app! You can’t print the sudoku, it jumps around making it hard to find and read an article you want to read. It forces you to deal with pop-up ads. You can’t go back and look at past editions. in short, it makes reading the newspaper so frustrating and time-consuming it’s not worth it. We’ve had a subscription to the Register Guard for decades, I’m on the verge of canceling it.

One of the worst, why isn’t it better?

This media outlet has major issues from reporting to editing (the typos, omg) to delivery, this app is no different. Photos are rendered too large to view, the app jumps all the way to the bottom of a story when you try to scroll past the giant photo to the next line of text, forcing you to scroll back up and effectively read the story backward, and topping it all off, the app shuts down regularly while in use. It’s borderline fraudulent to charge $20/mo. for a “lite” print version full of useless ads and outdated stories which refers to this junky app to access breaking news and updates. The only reason we haven’t canceled is due to our community support pledge during the pandemic. It’s a shame the owner/publisher doesn’t leverage their digital resources to deliver a better quality news experience.

No more Guard

The Gannet Register-Guard app usually is dependable, except when it isn’t. But the actual paper itself is like that too. Evidently without an Editor, the grammatical mistakes and incorrectly-used words are distracting, but I balk at two- and three-day-old news. And trying to read the paper on an iPhone. All the app can do is make the paper available, and it is left to the reader to decide if it is worth the effort.

I like to read the e-edition on my iPad…

…but for the last couple of years I haven’t been able to do that. The app works on my iPhone and lap top but I can’t log in from the iPad. Support has had me change passwords ad nauseam followed by escalation to a senior tech, followed by frustrated indifference on my part as I give up. I’ve gone through this scenario 3-4 times over the past couple of years. I don’t understand why they can’t come up with a solution.

Terrible. A downgrade from the previous app.

No Swipe option; have to click on arrow to change page. Ads (from non-local businesses) pop up regularly obscuring content. Impossible to simply set page size for viewing or to zoom in or out. When viewing the list of pages for an edition, you can’t just click on one to view. I can’t view my account payment options. Absolutely NOT user-friendly.

It FREEZES!

I’m not going to even mention the deteriorated R-G…oops, I already did! The app is very frustrating: often when I touch my iPad screen to change pages or enlarge an article, the app goes to an entire article; However, the worst thing is when the entire app freezes on a page and I simply have to sit and wait until it’s ready to move on (this is, in fact what I’m waiting for as I write this)

Less than one star would be more appropriate.

Horrible. Difficult to use. Jumps around and makes it extremely annoying. And pop up ads??? Really??? I already pay for the newspaper which is mostly ads these days and now I have endure pop up ads? Disgraceful. It is not user friendly and may just give up the paper altogether if I can’t find a way around this horrible app.

The new app stinks

The new app is difficult and a nuisance to use. The reporting of local news and sports is often later than in a publication from Portland. The restrictions on cancellation of a subscription are too severe. I plan on canceling mine when my current subscription is near its end. BEWARE, one must cancel well before your subscription expires.

Frustrating format

I’m not able to get the actual newspaper like I did on the previous Ap ( green one). Just articles. And I am unable to access the extra editions like USA Today like my wife does on her iPad using the older green Ap. I set up my new iPad recently and the only Ap available was the one with the white background.

This app defies logic

I would assume the makers of this app have looked at other newspaper apps like WaPo or the NYT. While not perfect, at least in those apps it is easy to find what type of article you are looking for. This app lacks any organization or charm. All I want to do is cancel my subscription (mostly bc of the app) and I feel like I’m trapped in a labyrinth. It Is impossible. I assume the print is decent. The app is garbage.

God App

This is my morning newspaper and aside from the initial getting signed in and a million “I’m not a robot” roadblocks, it recognizes me without any problems and functions as it should.

Works fine, but here’s why I don’t use it

The app works fine. But I have been going to local TV online news sites instead of opening the app. Why? The app always opens to sports articles. I’m not looking for sports; I’m looking for straight news.

Organization

I am a new subscriber. I enjoy the content (especially local news), but find it annoying to wade through previously posted stories.

This is a pathetic app, I was forced into it by someone I could barely understand, told it was the latest and I should have it. Big mistake doesn’t stay on the article. Pictures are hard to look at not one bit better than the original registered guard app I had, but I made the change. My bad Hugh Cochran.

Pop ups make it too annoying to use

Pop up videos try to open every few second now. I can’t scroll past even two articles without the video screen trying to open again, over and over again.

Old App…Better

I am viewing this on my newer iPad. It’s not allowing me to use a full screen option. It’s a screen within a smaller screen. Very annoying. Did anyone try this out before changing it?

The latest update of the app is unusable. Extremely slow and full of bugs. Ads pop up and just sit there. Scrolling up and down becomes a test of patience as the page seems to freeze as soon as it loads.

The new app

This transformation from the former green colored app is a disaster for me. I can no longer read the paper on my iPad. It won’t stay still and disappears constantly. As we are not locals I will look for another paper

Poor device sharing

Changed apps since gannet bought register guard so each device seems to require a subscription. Unable to get this app to recognize the same app on my iPad. Not user friendly

Horrible!

This App is very frustrating to read on an iPad. You can’t easily read one page at a time. The older original version was so much better. I hate this version! Bring back the original.

Constantly freezes

I have deleted and reinstalled this app three times. Always freezes. I had an old one that always worked. Unfortunately now it won’t open.

Bad app

App will not let us open the paper. Been trying for 2 weeks. Called to talk to a rep twice with no help. Keeps asking for a password but never lets us in.

This app doesn’t load the e-edition consistently. It loads on my phone but not on my iPad. Later in the day it will load. It is a new iPad so the chip might be the issue.

It's just really bad.

Navigation is crude, and outdated news articles stay for weeks and months after the initial publication.

Worst app ever

This app is a nightmare. Randomly kicks you out and trying to log in is awful. The security level on this dinky newspaper is ridiculous.

First they ruined . . .

The print Edition and now they want you to purchase the Online edition. Most of what they publish is a compilation from other newspapers. No thanks! Emilio bandiero

What a joke

I’m only downloading this app as I’m trying to figure out a way to access The Red Guard when I’m traveling. For the life of me, I cannot understand when I pay for a full year subscription, why they make me log in ALL THE TIME, to read what I’ve already paid for. When I call they always say there is nothing they can do, those decisions are made at their corporate offices in Atlanta (I think). When I asked to talk to corporate, they say they can’t give me a phone number. I’ve even complained to the new General Manager, which was like talking to the wall. Pay more, get less should be their corporate motto! 😡

Steals your clipboard!! PRIVACY THEIF!!

I downgraded my review. I discovered every time you open this app it steals all of your information off of your clipboard. My new iPhone tells me when this happens. How dare they? I paid a subscription to keep them going and they are stealing my private data. I deleted them and asked for a refund. Don’t bother

It’s not good......

The app info says it works on my iPad but the pictures are gigantic......so I have no idea what I’m looking at. Wouldn’t you think it would adjust the size to fit the device? Is that too much to ask? Apparently so.

Daily headache

This app is awful. It keeps crashing on an up to date iPhone 7. Gatehouse — you can surely do better.
