By biggest problem with this app is
Ok so my biggest issue with this app and basically any of the translation apps is they never give u the different options. Like with Spanish. U select Spanish but they only give you the “Spain” Spanish..not the Mexico Spanish. And if u know any Spanish at all you know that that actually is a HUGE issue.. being as the two aren’t the same. So u could say somethin in Spain Spanish and it not mean anything at all or is off.. it’s really annoying and honestly I don’t understand why the people who make the app like the ppl who speak the language they are adding doesn’t say anything or whatever to make the creator’s actually add the correct things.. I mean y’all put all this time into making the app and all the languages right? So why in the world would u basically cut it short by being lazy and not adding the ‘Mexico’ one.. it’s just really annoying and if they actually did that they’d get 5 stars..I’m being nice with the 2 stars I voted.. that’s how big of a deal that actually is and I’m not sure why no one has fixed that.. I mean I can’t be the only one who has a problem with that.. so if they don’t add that soon I’ll likely delete the app for snothoer. The only reason I’ve got this app is cuz it came on the phone wen I bought the phone from Verizon. So I figured it’d likely be the best one I could get BUT, CLEARLY I’m wrong cuz there’s better ones out there and there’s a good chance I’ll delete this one for another

Offline mode just doesn’t work
When the app works, it is actually pretty good. The integration with iOS is nice, and the quality of translations, even offline ones, is pretty good. But, the offline (on-device) mode has some serious problems. It used to work most of the time, but there has always been a problem where it insists on re-downloading the dictionaries. Now, it has recently decided that it can only download one dictionary. Attempting to download a second results in the first being deleted, and there’s never a point where it actually functions correctly. Even when it used to function, it would demand downloading a new copy of the dictionary at inconvenient times. Do you want to right click on some text for a web page or in an email and translate it? Great. One time. The second time, it demands downloading the dictionaries again. And it does this over and over so that the app is essentially unusable offline (which is where I value it the most). Finally, the support link on the store page is a joke. It just takes you to Apple’s generic support page for its devices. Nothing about the Translate app at all. No place to file a bug report. No place to seek assistance for it. This app should be great. When it works, it is great, but it’s completely dropped the ball on the little things which are so vital to making it work consistently and, therefore, usefully. I guess it’s back to Google Translate until they fix this.

I pay outrageous money for iPhones, because they are the best, right?
Why hasn’t this app added more supported languages, yet? ESPECIALLY for IOS 17?! Latin should ABSOLUTELY be included, not only for personal purposes, but educational. Latin is fundamental to medical education, translation of older texts, animal studies, and so much more! And we need to go BEYOND Latin! Like dialects would be great, but that’s a lot. We could at the very least have options like Spanish (Central & South America), as well as, Spanish (Spain) as they are very different. And that’s just one example. With all of the ways to communicate globally, I would think Apple would be on the forefront of evolving this type of technology in communication. Not to mention, with all of the global migrations, be it from refugees, immigrants, people who are studying abroad, etc., it is ESSENTIAL that we are able to communicate in a sincere and meaningful manner to avoid conflict and discourse. We should absolutely be expanding on this aspect of these issues to evolve as human beings. C’mon Apple. We can do better. We have to. Especially if you claim to be the “best” and after the radiation issues in France? Or all of the many other issues your company has and will face as tech and AI continue to evolve. You can’t say your the best in security anymore. Pegasus proved that, even though your company tried to keep it quiet. And if you can’t step up? Then I fully support a new company that will.

Are you sure this is accurate? Plus not enough language options
Look (sigh) i want to like this, but tbh i don’t think this app is even accurate, i typed stuff in Japanese and Korean and Arabic because I was curious (English US is my native language)and when typing in random characters, I tend to get some…wacky results, heck sometimes I get the same wacky results when typing in completely different characters of the same language. I decided to test this app. I typed in سخيامبسنطصكيض on this app and Google translate, your app gave me “Scheyam, I’m going to sleep” but Google Translate gave me “Squishy Snacks” I then typed in another translation and the same thing happened, major differences in results. I trust Google more as their translations seem to be more accurate and make more sense than this wacky app, plus the reviews suggest the same thing. Also there is a severe shortage of languages on here! I’m Portuguese as my ancestors and grandparents come from Portugal (Azores) and I wanted to learn more, but this app, like most, offers only Brazilian Portuguese, and both have differences in words and dialects. I also heard that many on here want Hebrew and Latin American Spanish on here, I also agree that those should be options. What about Udru (the second most spoken language in the world) what about Swedish? What about Polish? Finnish? Heck where is Mongolian? 1 star, very dissatisfied. (Will use this app as a joke only)

Aren’t apps supposed to work?
Literally nothing happens when I type in the text to translate and press the “go” button. The text simply disappears from the screen and doesn’t show any sort of translation. It doesn’t even show the original text anymore. It’s like the app resets every time you enter text and press “go.” The text disappears and nothing happens after that. Even trying to press the microphone to speak the translation doesn’t work because the microphone button doesn’t seem to do anything either. It won’t even initiate a recording to translate. It’s like this is a dud app developed solely to take up space. I followed all the directions and enabled all the permission, and still the app is a dud. Apparently it works for some people but a lot of people can’t get it to work for any language. I’ve deleted and redownloaded the languages, and deleted and redownloaded the app itself, and still it doesn’t work. It sometimes worked on my old iPhone 7, but has never worked on my iPhone XR. Maybe it only works on the newest iPhone models? As Apple’s way of forcing us to upgrade to the latest line of iPhones. But I’m not doing that. I’ll just go back to iTranslate or Google Translate instead. Those apps may collect data on me but at least they always worked when I needed them to.

A CHILD COULD TRANSLATE BETTER 🤣🤣
This app = ☠️☠️☠️☠️ I mean is is accurate? Most of the time NO. Whenever i put in something in Japanese it is most of the time wrong in mean do you even know the meaning people who did Japanese? I want to also point out how the microphone thing is USELESS. When i use it it never comes out the way i say it. I mean you should get rid of that option. I also wan to say i speak Japanese so i know it this is right or wrong. When i did use this i thought “ WOW these people are really DUMB!!!!!” As for now i still do think that. Though i may be a mere child to me kids knowing more that the people who made this app feels like i am smarter than the people who translated Japanese to english. Sometimes me and my little brother would make fun of this app for being terrible at it’s only job it has: translating. I am a type of person who don’t like it when people get the translation wrong as to me they might of said something that could insult me. Must I add I hope the people who owns or programs this app see this and hire a person who knows the language of what they want to translate this. If they did do that DO BETTER!!!! I child for goodness sake it smarter than the app. Also the app is like 0 is has NO PURPOSE.I hope they update this due to how unreliable this app is.

Confirmed by an Italian
This app has been helping me speak Italian while I use Duolingo to learn it. If I want to say something but haven’t learned one of the words yet I will put in the English and then see the translation, but if something seems contrary to what I’ve learned in Duolingo or have questions I will confer with my Italian friend. Not once has she told me the translation was wrong. In fact she explains why it’s correct even if it doesn’t make sense to me. I’m surprised by all the low star reviews here. Especially the one that complained that his translation of tofu in Korean came back as bean curd… ya know, considering tofu is… bean curd. 🙄 Maybe we shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds us, it’s not even a paid app. And as far as languages go, when I wanted to learn Arabic Duolingo didn’t offer it, but I didn’t write them a bad review, I submitted a request for it. About a year later they had it available and I was thrilled. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want, rather than complain about it.

Nah
I am using this for French, in conjunction with other apps and materials, and it does a pretty decent job of translating things well. Those are the good things. The bad things are…it’s not user friendly at all. If you’re working on something and have to get out of the app for more than about 5 mins, everything just disappears. There are no options to save anything, other than to add it to favorites, which doesn’t really work as a file. Another annoying thing is how the font jumps from normal size to giganto lettering, flipping the screen horizontally and upside down, without me touching anything but trying to scroll down ro read what I translated. When I tried to get it back to the previous screen, it somehow deleted ALL of the conversations and translations I had “stored” into favorites, and I only hit something that looked like a back-arrow. Super frustrating-I spent more time trying to figure out how the app worked, than doing my lessons. Bottom line: it mostly stinks and I deleted it. Lol

So I speak Spanish and i decided to try this app. But what happened was that when I put fancy and translate it to Spanish it said fantasy instead of fancy for some reason. I don’t know if it’s because it was Spanish from Spain and not Mexican Spanish but fancy in Spanish is NOT fantasia ( fantasy ) I also tried to see if the camara worked, so I took a screenshot of a video that was in another language and it turns out that I have to put the language, I mean you can’t always know what language it is, I tried to see but I just don’t know what it is! I don’t know how people like it, but it’s horrible and they do have a limitation of languages like Spain Spanish is not completely the same as Mexican Spanish or Colombian Spanish so putting only one type of Spanish feels bad bc while it’s most popular it isn’t the only one, and the app is so annoying like I said the camera doesn’t work unless you can type in the language but either way it’s still so annoying 😡😡 so not trying to be bossy but don’t use it, if you want to know what fancy in Spanish is it’s Elegante NOT Fantasia🙄😡

Best translation service available for Spanish but…
This product from Apple is years ahead of all (I mean ALL) other translators. I use it primarily for Spanish. I’m irritated that Latin Spanish dominates the language but there’s no option. However, Portuguese? Brazilian only. I understand that Latin America has so many dialects and variations. However, there are commonalities from Mexico to Cape Horn. The Barcelona accent is ridiculous. No one in America is trying to sound like a Spaniard. However, someone at Apple needs to look heavily into the problem of pronombres. Apple Translate cannot properly translate with the correct pronouns. She, he, they, we, them, never translate properly. I have to feed the Spanish given to me back through, identify the problems, edit the Spanish which I’m not all that great at yet, feed it back through, and continue this process until the sentences are balanced and properly translate forwards and backwards.

Google Translate Must Switch Now
I used this for work to translate from English to Spanish. Unfortunately it only has Spain Spanish and i need Mexican, Latino, Hispanic Spanish. They are similar but are completely different some of my Hispanic customers have no clue of what im saying sometimes because it is Spain Spanish. The app is okay i just started having problems with it today ive been using it for 8 months now but i took a picture to translate from english to spanish and it didnt work i tried updating but there was no update. so that made me look for a new translator app. i found google translate it has the Mexican Spanish and it is easy to use and the words are accurate!! You dont even have to take a picture you just put the camera on the script and it translates in mini seconds. I am so glad i dont have to struggle with the spain spanish words no more. definitely using and staying with Google Translate App!!!!

I haven’t had any issues…I don’t think…
I can only speak English and recently I’ve been learning to draw a certain style for a couple of characters from a game (Bittergiggle and Sheriff Toadster, but mostly Bittergiggle, from Garten of Banban) that I really love. I’d been drawing based off of a certain artist from online to learn the style a bit and now I barely have to look at the original image to draw an adorable version of Bittergiggle. I decided to put the words in Japanese, making it look somehow even more adorable. However I do not know Japanese. So, I looked on my iPad’s apps and found this Translate app. I suppose I can only assume they are accurate. Maybe if my half-uncle (it’s a long story) from Japan comes over to visit my Nana and other family again, I can ask him if it’s actually accurate. I’m worried if it isn’t since there have been so many complaints about inaccuracy.

What a Disappointment! Doesn’t Work Offline Anymore
After recent 16.4 update this app stopped working offline. Doesn’t matter how many times you try downloading languages, deleting App ENTIRELY and reloading, or whatever else you can come up with. You get “Translation is unavailable at the moment. Try again at a later time.” Disappointing that Apple can’t even get their own App to work on their own iOS operating system. Especially something as simple as a translator which is nothing more than a few relational databases (call them dictionaries if you want) interacting. AI taking over the world on one side, Apple trying to make their own Apps work on their own system on the other. No way Steve would be pleased is all would venture. UPDATE: Few Days after iOS upgrade the downloaded offline languages are working again. Very glad to see and have changed the 1 star to 3 and crossing fingers going forward.

Terrible translations
After a while of trying to use this with studying Spanish I started getting suspicious and started double checking everything with SpanishDict. To put it nicely at best the translations are obscure or secondary (or tertiary). Nada bueno. Just one recent example: I was just listening to a song with the phrase “no te fallo”. I looked it up on Translate and it said “I won’t let you”. Well that was not convincing grammatically for in the context of the song. SpanishDict results gave me “I don’t fail you”. Yup, that fits. I was going to rate two stars but really what is the point of having a translate app you can’t trust. Extra disappointing since it’s Apple’s stock translate app. I would rather prefer using native apps… as long as they were arguably the best - or even worked! Disappointingly, unlike the Google translate app, there is not even a place for suggesting corrections, reporting errors, or any community input, nor are there any possible alternative meanings/ results suggested (in case of multiple possible meanings or in cases when it might be wrong).

App doesn’t count very well
When I entered seventy four in English it first offered up correctly, soixante quatorze. When I entered seventy four years old it managed, Soixante cinque ans, somehow coming up with the french for sixty five. It has also managed to come up with sixty-fourteen for soixante quarorze. Clearly something is amiss here. Haven’t checked any further as I don’t have the time to spend on it. Francis McCarthy. PS, I also noticed that it’s using the familiar of you, tu, when conversation is most likely to require vous. And more already, I’ve only had the app for 48 hours and I keep finding mistakes. I enter, Je suis un luthier, and it translates correctly, I enter, I am a luthier, and it tells me I am luthier. Perhaps it understands it as a name? I translate books and since I noticed some basic mistakes I have to check everything, sometimes from both directions, French/English or English/French. I have little confidence in this app.

THE BEST TRANSLATION APP
now i have tried almost every translation app out there and after a long search I finally found it an app that’s true to its words and works in any language for any conversation from a single question to a run on sentence this app is for it and works flawlessly and I recommend that you atleast try it because ya don’t loose anything for just trying out the app worse case scenario you don’t like it ( which is highly unlikely) so then what? You just delete it, the world won’t end if it’s not for you, just try it out, it’s the best, Thanks for reading I appreciate you taking the time to read all of that lol have a nice day and I hope this helped😊 and remember Jesus loves and died for you and is coming back soon, are you ready? It needs more languages
This is a great and accurate translator app and I am glad that Apple finally got on board in creating one, but it needs more languages including language variations. In case you're not aware - Spanish (Spain) is NOT the same as Spanish (Mexico) and can often differentiate depending on what the translation is. Please get up to date in regards to this and other similar issues plus the confusing difference between how the app works when On-Device mode is “on” and/or “off”. As I mentioned before; Translate is a great, necessary, and needed addition to Apple’s many apps and has amazing potential but until these mentioned and other bugs within the app are fixed then it will never be able to compete with and/or let alone be on the same level as/with Google Translate. Thank you tremendously in advance!

TERRIBLE DO NOT DOWNLOAD
I had this translator for a long time, and it is not good. i should have let it finish sooner. sometimes when you tap the mic to speak, it will not even pick up your words and when you close the app and re-open to try again, it will still not pick up what you are saying which is SO annoying!!!!!!! it doesn’t even pick up the right words sometimes even if you are saying it clearly. very bad translator , and you should give more languages and also not just include translator from a certain region (e.g. spain, france.) work on your app, and the new update is annoying bc sometimes if you are speaking another language, it will think you are speaking something else for example let’sssy you do german to eng or vise versa if you speak english , it will think you are speaking german and if you speak german it will think you are speaking english which is frustrating so change it and maybe more people will like your app. i honestly wish i could give you CERO stars.

Zero Stars…
This app barely works. The translations are almost never correct and they only have like 10 translations options. Whenever I use a word or phrase indicating a gender it always uses the opposite gender. So if the phrase or sentence I want translated mentions “her” it always translates to “him” and vice versa. Also when I go to translate something, it always takes like a minute before it plays the translations. It also crashes and when it does, when I try to open it again, I’m greeted with a blank screen and I can’t do anything after that. For like several days. I have to uninstall it and install it again which has me start all over again. I don’t like how other apps require to purchase add ons. This one is free but adds nothing to the experience. I might as well just pay for the extra stuff on other apps. I think this app came with the update. Because when I updated to the first iteration of iOS 15 this app was magically installed afterwards.

UI issues
This could be a really nice app, but the states the interface gets into are confusing. Often the app somehow gets into a state where it’s in the wrong language and it’s hard to get it to the right one. It would be helpful if the app made it plainly obvious, at all times, which language is active for translation. Often it has no indication of this onscreen. And the placeholder text (“Enter Text”) changes languages when you tap on it, further confusing which language is active. It would make more sense if the placeholder text always gave you the name of the language it’s expecting. (Like, if French is active, always put “French” in the field as placeholder text.) “Enter text” is not helpful placeholder text because your users aren’t morons. You tap on that field and a keyboard shows up! What else are they gonna do? Much better to show the active language instead.

Is this app Точный?
Ok, first of all, I don’t know if this app is accurate. So I compare also the two translations to your app to Google Translate. A lot of times, I see major differences. Sometimes I’d I type just one word to translate, I get two words. But guess what? Google DOES NOT do that. Like for example, someone go on the Apple translate and type in the word, “translate.” I see two words. If you see two words you know I am right. Type it and you will see, “ Переводить, перевести.” Like, I just typed one word. Second of all, Google has more options of languages. Add, Serbian, Bangla, Finnish, Hindi, Greek, etc… This app should be use an accurate translator to help. Second of all, when I use the microphone to speak, sometimes it paste what I did not say😡😡😡. Я ненавидеть этот переводить. Я также изучаю русский язык. Я записываю слова в конспекты и в основном использую google translate, потому что считаю, что он лучше. This translator needs improvements. You see all the negative reviews so please improve your app.

Great translations, broken UI.
This app has fantastic potential, and its translations are accurate and natural. The interface looks like it would be good, but once you try to use it you find that it’s shockingly broken. This isn’t normal from Apple, and it’s frankly a little surprising that this thing was even released in its current state. (My theory is that we’re seeing the result of 2+ years of WFH culture.) The main two issues: it’s difficult and confusing to switch languages and to make that setting “stick”. And more importantly, the “Go” button often does nothing except close the sheet into which you were typing. This button is the most important UI element in the whole app, and more often than not it just plain doesn’t work. I’m sure the app will be fixed in time, but it should never have been released as it is now.

Frustrating User Interface
The most simplistic part of this app is the ability to change languages to start a conversation. After that, everything becomes a chore: - Every feature requires two or three additional taps or interface selections, which often makes the experience confusing and leaves the user wondering what to do next. - App will often take an extended time to populate a translation, with no interface indication about the progress of the command that has been given. - Voice-to-text feature often will not populate a translation, and incorrectly continuing after ending voice option will erase what has been typed. - Selecting the text field to edit what has been written via voice-to-text, will often delete what has been written.

This app is just ridiculously bad they should just delete it and leave the job to google translate
I really can’t emphasize how poor quality this app is. It is honestly the worse app on my phone. Not only is it not user friendly it also fails to translate certain words correctly when it’s not frozen. Examples of the app’s poor performance are as follows: can’t easily edit a mistake in the words needed translated without erasing the entire message, app will sometimes only translate part of the message (I.e., 4 words out of 20), it does not detect languages, only a handful of language are available to be translated. Literally any other translation app is better. Don’t know why I keep bothering to use this app. You’ve let me down too many times, Apple. You can spend millions on advertising the iPhone but can’t spend a few hundred dollars paying an intern to design a better app. Shame on you.

Translates Well, Nice Interface.
Not sure where all the negativity toward this app is coming from. The translations are as good as the major translators I’ve used. I really like the interface which is clean and uncluttered. The one big problem for me is the voice translation. First it is unnaturally fast. No real person runs words together that quickly and with no thought for context in the sentence. Much better to slightly slow down the rate. The other problem is the voice itself. I should be able to select a male voice if I want or choose from a number of other voices. The “italiano” voice is far too high pitched and very annoying. So I never listen to voice translations because of these issues.

I have to rely on google translate…
I am a permanent resident of Baja California Mexico. I do not speak Spanish fluently and occasionally need to look up a word or two in translator. That being said, it is very incorrect with certain phrases or other idioms. Spain Spanish is very different then Spanish (Mexico). Most of the time I use it (used to use it) I would get strange looks and have to go to google translate for the person to understand and I resent that because I HATE google. Please address this. Because Spain Spanish is very different. Also the translations are often incorrect. But, it’s gotten better since the app came out. Another thing I don’t like is when dictating speech and you pause for even a couple seconds it stops translating and you cannot edit it. It’s very frustrating especially if you need to think of a word to say.

Excellent communication tool
I downloaded this app before our last trip to mexico. We don’t speak Spanish and I have a slight hearing problem (deaf in one ear). This makes it difficult for me to understand the enunciation of words sometimes. I struggle with certain tones and that makes learning to communicate in a different language difficult. I hated asking everyone local how to say something and then not getting the word correct because I couldn’t hear their answers. With this application I could look up words and phrases and then the locals would teach me the “less formal” or easier way to say those phrases. I could communicate and this made the trip much more fun!

This app is good 👍
Ok so I downloaded this app and I thought it was not that bad at all. Because when I type a word it usually comes out right, but the problem is when I download all the languages that it gives me it sometimes makes me do it all over again, which is kinda annoying. But when I take a picture at something and translate it to Spanish then it does the correct words for it, for some bad reviews out there, I get you but like you can always ask for what you want when you want it and then maybe the providers for this app can fix it. So overall this app is not so bad bit all I want is for this app to fix these mistakes; don't make people download languages all over again, and last, please make the words come out correctly.

Needs copy function
This app desperately requires a function to copy translated text. It should be obvious that users will use this app to translate long pieces of text and trying to select all text is an exercise in frustration. Instead the dictionary function which is not always relevant keeps popping up and needs to be dismissed. Apple please finish the job. Edit: copy function is finally finally added. Took long enough. But now when I dictate a text to be translated, it stops after the first sentence and doesn’t let me add further. I either have to start all over again or create another translation for the second. Why not just keep the text box open and translate in real time. Please just copy what Google does. I’m doing my best to give Apple apps a try.

My problem with the app
As someone learning a new language I️ use this app to often translate something from my target language into my native language. My problem with the app is that if I️ want to translate something from the target language into my native language and I need to hear the pronunciation of the target language I️ am unable to do so because the app only provides audio translation for the translation itself. If I️ then try to reverse the translation where I type the word from my native language to my target language then I️ don’t always get the exact translation of what I’m looking for and therefore can’t hear how something is pronounced. I️ wish there was an option to hear the audio pronunciation for what you’re translating and what’s been translated.

I like this better than google translate
I don’t know why so many people seem to have so many problems. I use this app for translation between English and Japanese. Certainly not an easy task. The app is more forgiving about my non-native Japanese accent than Google Translate. It also allows short breaks in a sentence without cutting the speaker off immediately. It has never crashed on my phone and the translations are often more accurate than Google Translate. Important to note that none of these translating apps are perfect. Google for example cannot distinguish between the Japanese words for CHOPSTICKS and BRIGDE. Overall, I prefer Apple Translate over Google Translate.

Good app but has some issues
Translate by Apple is a great app but has room for improvement. They need more languages to translate to as they only have a couple dozen currently. Using the app off the internet makes transcribe mode disabled, which is very annoying, but definitely not as annoying as the new bug which comes with the new iOS 17 update. With iOS 17, the overall layout of the app has been changed, which is not that bad, but there is a new bug when typing in letters to translate, they lag a few seconds before actually being typed in. This is TERRIBLE, considering it makes the app just laggy and unusable. But it is convenient when needing an app to translate with and therefore, although trying to decide between 2 and 3 stars, I put 3. Good app ig

Add more language
Since this translator is specially made for iPhone then we want to say that iPhone is a global one and It has worldwide popularity and iPhone is used in almost all countries of the world, which is actually eye-catching. Looking at how no other brand of phone in the world is used, I want to tell you that there are many languages in the world that are not here, especially many countries in Asia who use iPhone a lot. Using in detail like Bangladesh,India,Pakistan these countries do not have language which is really worth understanding and I think it is very necessary so I request you that you add these languages in it as well as languages of other countries of the world.

I love this app 😁 I've been using it on my iPad for translating Spanish (and a little French) into English. The layout and colors make this a genuine pleasure to use. Eventually, I discovered that without even realizing it, I was retaining the knowledge - probably because of the ease and quality of the presentation!!! Brilliant side effect 😂 ............ FWIW, for me, this is way better than Google, and has even replaced Bing, although Bing was helpful for me as well. Apple Translate is a great app!!!!! And for me, that's gotta be the first time I used the words "Apple" and "great" in the same sentence LOL 😊 .......... Oh, and I'm relieved that it has Spanish ***Spain***. Exactly what I wanted 😅

Wonderful Conversion without Effective Copying Capabilities
Great with offline dictionaries and conversions while traveling. Trust security of app as well as processing. I desire ability to copy translated text in one click like in alternatives. Also retain more history, and place used phrases cataloged in folders will be assisting many. Ability to translate better integrated within all Apps as backend functionality improves. Offline dictionaries essential for travel and makes more sense than requiring online connection; have had issues with dictionary downloads, which now seen to disappear with any iOS update and troublesome to remember to download again, which has issues (Nov 2022). I appreciate the developers kindness in creating a more unified system.

Would like to help improve this app (Or maybe learn how to use it correctly?)
I am fluent in English as my first language and intermediate for Spanish. Over the past year or so, I have been trying to use this app to translate words and phrases from either language into the other. Somehow, I cannot seem to master progressing (speak or Txt/type) from one language as translated into the other as the only two selected languages for my app (IOS). The Spanish “Introducir texto“ does not yield me English and vice versa for the “Enter text for English needed translations from Spanish. Also, very often I cannot even find the microphone when I open the app forcing me to enter needed translation material by texting. Might there be a set of instructions somewhere that will perhaps show me how to correctly use this app—if I am indeed using the wrong protocol for operations? JCS-MD

Trash app
You can not switch the language over to a different language. You try and exit out, should work right???? Right??? Wrong! Literally preloads what you last had on there and it doesn’t matter how hard you try to switch the language it doesn’t work. I have tried every button and every option. Nothing works. Come on Apple step up the game a bit here. Edit: I’m not changing my rating, but I figured out how to switch languages, convoluted! You have to change the languages at the top, tap the world symbol in the lower left part of the keyboard, change the keyboard back to English, then exit out of the keyboard, go back into it, then you can type and have it translated. What?! Been laughing at this for a while now, but I had to share in case anyone else was struggling. Convinced the only 5 star reviews are from Dev’s

Poor speed, waiting for improvement
I’m sure it’ll improve with time, but currently the speed of translation when your internet connection is spotty (aka, anywhere abroad) is unusably slow. Note also that you need to download both the target and the source languages for it to work offline (weird it doesn’t automatically have English or whatever the phone is set to initially; that’d be a no brainer). Often times it’ll just show a green bar on the translate part, or just say “translation unavailable “. My main use has been while in countries with languages other than English, so speed is basically required. Will be switching to other apps for this trip, but I hope Apple improves this (easier to use built in normally).

Randomly deletes text
Update December 2023: Why is it harder to use now seriously. Now you have to click the Dictionary button to get to the most useful part (noun genders) which takes more clicks than in previous versions of this app. It offers a swap button finally, but only if you haven’t hit Enter yet. And lastly, once you hit enter, you have to scroll way up to see the actual translation you wanted. It’s just even more frustrating at this point. Original review: I like that this translator app shows you the genders of nouns but absolutely hate how practically every time I use it I have to enter the text at least twice because the app will randomly delete everything I entered. It does it just unpredictably enough that I forget it does this and it drives me crazy. It’s the buggiest iOS app I’ve ever used.

seriously apple?
okay when i first started using this it worked just fine and i used it a lot just for fun… so then i wanted to use it without wifi for trips so i downloaded french and spanish and it just stopped working! i would put in the words and it was just blank where the words should’ve been. and that was WITH wifi. so i deleted it and got it back and it did the same thing. it’s been a few months and i tried again and it still doesn’t work. also i’m not sure it’s completely accurate because i tried to figure something out on duolingo so i looked it up and put what it said in duolingo and it was wrong so im not sure. i do not recommend this app. it’s not reliable and it’s probably incorrect. Apple i am very disappointed in this app. i know yall could do better. one star 😕

So Much Potential, but Needs Improvement**
This app has so much potential. It's fast and can translate in real time between languages, which is impressive. However, it often translates spoken words into complete nonsense. I speak with an American English accent, which should theoretically be the easiest for an Apple-designed product to understand and translate. Despite this, the app frequently misinterprets my speech, resulting in confusing and incorrect translations. This issue isn't limited to English. When I use the app to translate Chinese, the Chinese speakers' words are also rendered as nonsense. This has led to several frustrating situations where the translation is unclear, and the other speakers are left confused. The app has great potential, but the voice recognition feature needs significant improvement to be truly effective.

Difference between Recognizing and Understanding My Voice
Two stars for basic ‘ease’ of use - if only typing simple phrases for translation. The reality is - the most common use of language on a day-to-day, person-to-person basis is the spoken language. Apple products (namely Siri) have difficulty understanding the human voice when speaking English much less a nonnative language. Quite frustrating. It’s not just me. It seems to be a widespread reality. Siri is better at recognizing my voice versus say the blender. (And that, not always.) Understanding and distinguishing words is another realm beyond Siri. To date, any app within the Apple environment that uses or especially requires Siri is going to sadly fall well short of any expectations.

It’s 2022
It’s 2022 and you’re showing only 12 languages someone can choose to translate when there are countless languages on planet earth. That’s ridiculous. There are far more Asian languages than just three and you don’t have ANY AFRICAN languages at all on this app. I am extremely disappointed and it is disrespectful on the 12 languages you have chosen to include as a list of languages to translate. I hope other users see my review and feel outrage as I do. I hope you change your mindset and understand there are more than 12 languages on earth. Also there are many apple based apps that seriously need an update to make the app modern with the times. I have rarely seen any apple based apps requiring an update. I don’t think you are paying attention to your brand as a whole and making everything modern.

Late To The Game, Bringing Insufficient Resources
The name of the game for Apple, doesn’t matter if it is with network sharing, network teaming, external storage capabilities, or dozens of other technologies. Apple Inc consistently comes to the table with little to nothing to offer, and when they make their initial appearance, it is wholly insufficient. The handful of languages they bring in the offering of translate are already well covered by a number of more trusted applications. You’d think they’d try to zero in on an audience where they can become invaluable, and become…invaluable. Nope, we’re going to stand over here and be ignored by everyone, while the more main players stay more main, and we gain squat in market share. F-Idiots sit under your command Timothy, scared to be brave, intimidated to be daring. Stick with hardware, your software is losing.

Put aside the petty
This app definitely needs an update. No doubt. Interface can be sort of slow but I was just with a girl from Columbia and this app is the only one that would re arrange the words properly to make a coherent sentence in Spanish. Anybody who’s not a nitwit knows than a sentence in English will almost never be in the same order from start to finish in another language and vice versa. Apple and Google always puts it in normal order. Also I just learned this app integrates with ig and others to instantly translate using their method and it works every time

IRL better than the goog
Still way better than goog.. because the translation thru the camera shows up in real-time before you decide if you want/need/wether it is worth it to/ wether you have a good enough image to even snap a picture that it can translate from, so bravo on that. Add zoom functionality to such and you may have a very useful tool. Voice translations are poor at best, as w all translators on the market, none are worth paying for so please don't. I don’t care about school functionality here, I speak only of real life experience in cultures whom speak alternative languages to myself.

Much worse than competition, missing many languages
This underfed and orphaned Apple app is clearly a low priority. It totally fails compared to the competition, like Google translate and Microsoft translator in both the features, and the number of languages supported. It's too bad because it is integrated into ios, it would be nice to be able to use it. What makes it particularly infuriating that, when you select text in some app, you have an option to "translate" which would be oh so convenient - except then it says the language isn't supported. So, then you are stuck with having to copy and paste into either Google or Microsoft translators, which takes many unnecessary extra steps.

Used to be decent, now we have to clicked enter, scroll back up, and then click to get more info?
I use to use it to translate between Japanese and English and it was nice to type and then immediately click to get more info on the translated word. Now I have to type it, commit to the translation and hit enter, scroll back up to the previous translation and then I can finally click to view the additional information. The ones who redesigned the UI like this are not actually using the app. They can’t be. Bc no UI/UX designer in their right mind would push this through. Minimalism is not something that should be taking away from usability, minimalism should IMPROVE usability, and the lack of multiple translations also hinders this for MANY languages…

Can’t edit previous translations
I used to really enjoy using this app. I need it on a daily basis to communicate with people that don’t speak English. On previous versions of this app you were always able to edit text that you previously translated even if you had already completed the text. It seems like on iOS 17 there’s no option to edit any text if you’ve already completed writing your translations. If I have to write something very long and then I realize there’s a mistake later I can’t go back and change it. I have to rewrite the whole phrase. It seems like something that can be an easy fix with an update, but I’m not sure if Apple even realizes it’s not available anymore so for now I have to use Google Translate.

Very hard to use. Not user friendly.
You can translate from one language to English but you can’t reverse it so you can type your response and respond in their language. Google does this and it’s extremely easy. I talk to people on other languages online a lot so I thought this would be useful. This app was just wasting storage so I deleted it maybe I will reconsider once if apple looks into improving this app. Making it easier for people to talk back and forth rather than just one way translation. I understand i could change the settings every time and go back and forth but google has a button to swap. Apple does not and when I try to change it , even tho I wrote in English it kept changing it back to Spanish and not translating.
