I understand that ResearchGate is not a technology company per se. I think the site does a fantastic job bringing the research community together as a social networking web site. Regarding its access on electronic devices the app designed for the iPhone is very good, but porting it over to the iPad tablet form factor is less than ideal compared to using a browser given that most use these tablets in landscape mode. Since most major web sites now provide apps that meet both the phone and tablet form factors, I would suggest that ResearchGate contact Apple for assistance in creating their app also for the iPadOS form factor to make it more user friendly to the size of the screen but still provide the same useful functions like notifications. Otherwise, the options become use the small iPhone app form factor on the iPad for notifications and a browser to access the web site if one feels the app screen size is too small. Thanks
Update 26Feb2019: Well, clearly condone at RG is listening to concerns about UI mad functionality. In the PSY month they have issued half dozen or more updates. Works fine now on iPhone XS. Still some glitches in interface and limitations on functionality vs online version. But a huge improvement. Original Review: The app seems to have nice features but because the graphical UI is poorly done on newer iPhones (unclear its actually coded for them, but if so they need a new coder). The result is that the interface elements such as drop down and back arrow are overlapping with system elements like time, location services, network and battery life. As a result, it’s nearly impossible to get those app buttons to register. It also looks poorly on these screens because both the top and bottom of the app are clearly not optimized to fit the screens well. It’s just off. I emailed them several months ago but no fix has occurred. Given it’s nearly u useable hard to give much over one star. I wouldn’t criticize for lack of compatibility with bleeding edge iPhone that was released, say, a week prior. But this screen configuration is over 16 months old and on Apple’s FOUR most recent models.
I have been using ResearchGate for over a year but have been deeply disappointed in it lately. My recent search for articles has come up fruitless. I found 20+ articles which may have had information pertinent to my research, but most of these were available by request only. So I pressed the “request to read full article” button, but it’s been over a week and I have had only one response from an author who stated “he didn’t have access to his paper anymore”. Now; I’m not giving a low rating because of his response, I’m giving a low rating for the lack of response from the other 20+ requests. I just wonder what value this app has if most of its articles are available upon request, and most of these requests are not responded too? I recommend ResearchGate makes providing the full article mandatory when posting on their site because otherwise their site is useless. I mean as a scientist, why would you post to have written a paper without posting the paper itself. That’s not the name of the game here.
ResearchGate finally has an app! I love this! It’s very convenient to see new articles from the scientist I follow. I particularly like the easy access to my messages with its own tab. I also like that I cam easily access the research items I follow by tapping the tab on the upper right corner. Also very convenient to see my profile and stats. I can download papers and upload them to Drive or Dropbox. HOWEVER, I would like to be able to search articles not just researchers using the search bar on top. Another feature that I’d like to have access to is the questions. It doesn’t seem to have a tab or a way to access them through the app. Being able to ask and answer questions on the go using the app would be great. Looking forward to more updates and will continue to use it.
I would like to use this product, but seldom do. First, there is no simple way to upload peer-reviewed publications or easily see which ones have been uploaded. My account remains woefully incomplete with no simple way to update it. I don’t have time to do this manually. It should be able to track my publications automatically, if I’ve authorised it, and include them in my bibliography. The app does not appear to facilitate finding my publications in anyway, let alone conference presentations etc and instructions on the website are absent. Second, there is no iPad app. The web page remains the most robust interface, but provides little guidance on how to use it, let alone link it to other accounts, like LinkedIn. Research related discussions are a great idea, however few of my colleagues appear to use this on a regular basis. If some of these limitations were addressed, it might facilitate uptake.
ReaearchGate is a great app and as an academic, used weekly for communications around the world with colleagues. The best feature is making grey literature such as high quality technical reports available to readers in Eastern Europe, Asia, Oceana, S. America, and Africa who may not have resources to obtain such material— the sharing power for scholars is impressive. The weakness of the app is the failure to recognize the many categories of professions and disciplines found in academia. It reflects a small minded, uncaring attitude towards the diversity of majors, departments, and schools within academia. 🙃
As a physician scientist, it’s been great to have flexibility when sharing preliminary findings, follow and learn from research that is helping a broad community, and incorporate insights from scientists and healthcare professionals. As a whistleblower, I was able to connect with professionals outside my field and rebuild a network in solidarity with others who want to also fix the American healthcare system. In summary, ReasearchGate helps professionals build a career and for me, rebuild a career after race based hate retaliation knocked me down.
Throughout history many discoveries have been made by intelligent men and women that were not professionals in their particular field of discovery. This is especially true in the field of Astronomy. Also, some facts are not even considered by mainstream scientists when they conflict with existing paradigms. ReasearchGate provides a forum for new theories and findings that may be critically important as our world raced towards ‘climate change’ at an ever increasing speed. David Rosenthal
I really like that I can do research and read scientific articles with ease on my smart phone, but the search feature in the app needs improvement. There is no way to filter results. Even something as simple as “most recent” for a filter would help find articles. Would love to see this app expand and grow to a more functional platform. Hopefully they can make some more improvements. Also, it would be nice to simply “bookmark” an article instead of “following” it.
Great source for articles in journals for which you have no subscription
I have been using Research Gate for several years and it has been especially helpful when looking for preprints and hard-to-find articles. The authors are generous with their time in posting their articles. It's a great resource for research.
As an academic I have come to value the Research Gate (RG) platform - while using my computer at work. Consequently, I’m at a complete loss for words to describe how disappointed I was while using this app on my iPad. The experience was so bad I, the app was forgotten until this morning, and I can’t bring myself to use it anymore. How can the people associated with RG be involved with something this bad? You literally have access to an amazing pool of talent at your fingertips. My colleagues and I, along with my students, use tablets everyday. For the love of all things digital, please update and improve this app.
Love this website. In particular - it helps to know which of your articles are being cited, and keeps you up with others works you might be interested in. Also the H-index and citations numbers are very helpful for year end review
As a scientist, I often use research gate’s online platform to troubleshoot issues with my protocols. Many scientists these days use iPads for work. Not their phones. So not having this app optimized for larger displays is pretty disappointing. Please develop a version of this app that supports and takes advantage of the larger display. Especially with iPad OS around the corner. If inspiration is lacking, see how Slack does it. I’m giving 2 stars just for having the app in the first place. Will update upon seeing improvement
It asks me to login before viewing a document but I have forgotten my credentials so I tried to login via Facebook and it redirects to a blank page showing no login page or anything. If this is the case then how are we going to view documents redirected to this app? Where is the signup option for ResearchGate? Do we have to manually go to the website on a browser to signup again? Where is the convenience for us users? So since I amare inconvenienced by this how about I rate you 1 star which is very generous of me and you continue to deny me usage of the app. Thank you.
This is app lack features of desktop version. Like you can’t ask questions. Also there is no organized way like if someone wants to learn a topic all random question answers are there. They can have Quora style best answer also they have software glitch where some answers show up repeatedly. This is annoying that simple question you can’t ask through mobile app then what is it worth for. Removing app.
i enjoy research, i am quite glad of the purpose of this app. however the executions are a little lacking. the mobile website is klunky. the app is not much better. i cant change my profile picture easily on the web, so i got the app to change it, and now i have another issue with the app being unable to change it, and it redirecting me back to the website. i dont have time to sit in front of a computer and fix this. ill try mobile again tomorrow because it might be due to my account being too new. i am in software engineering and these pain points can really deter new users. once this issue appears to be fixed i would consider changing my rating.
The newest update is really really fantastic!!! It’s very convincingly to check the research impact, others' research work, our progress, and many more. I like the interface. Thanks to the developers ❤️
Much like certain romantic partners of my life, the ResearchGate app is absolutely flawless when it opens up and remains stable. As it stands, however, the latest iOS (14.3) sees the crash of the app on attempted opening. I have given many second chances. And I will still until the problem is fixed, because I know the app is great when up and running.
I find this app frustrating. I get email request messages on my phone from ResearchGate, but when I go to the app to answer these requests i find they are missing. The data in the app are out of date by a week or two. This makes it impossible for me to answer peoples requests from my phone. So I’m finding the app of little use for me, after my initial exploration.
I love this app and service that offers connection with other researchers. iOS app is good and functional, but I would really love if you can make app for iPad OS - I think that will be really great. That way all iPad users could have full experience of this service.
ResearchGate is a chatty, entrepreneurial app that makes scholarship feel a bit like Facebook. But it’s a useful marketplace of ideas and it’s pretty easy to use. And it’s a good place to exchange articles and drafts directly with people.
Nice platform to share work but not much beyond that. Also notifications one receives by email as requests for materials often don’t show up in the app. So where do these request come from and where do they go?
Good to see citations and correct misattributions. However, Need the program needs AI that finds citations in the papers automatically and checks address and expertise automatically to determine correct citations.
Good and solid app with basic functionality. A dark theme needs to be added. Right now it's just impossible to read in the evening before going to bed.
So far so good, but the question and answer function is a very important part of RG. We currently need to go to Settings, and then be transferred to a web browser version of RG for questions. Please bring this into the app.
The app still lacks a lot more updates. Recommends on your answers cannot be seen adding question tool is not available. I wish they make a major update.
I‘m an iPad user. ResearchGate points to this app when I try to register. I downloaded it and it looks awful on iPad, because it‘s for iPhone only and doesn‘t allow horizontal view. I don‘t even need this on iPad, I just needed to register on the website and download a PDF.
This app needs some work it is not compatible on all devices and looks awful on my I pad pro... please fix this I would really like to use this app on my devices
I agree with another user's comment. I use an iPad to access this site and if the app is only for portrait mode then it is practically useless. I guess that I will delete the app and continue accessing just the web version.
I can’t read the answers of questions when they are long. In the other words, the “read more” option is not available for iPhone version of ResearchGate.
I just want to have access to research, I don’t understand why I have to be a professional to be able to login in the app. I just thought it was an app to make it easier for people to have access to information.
Clicking on a Research gate forum discussion /thread from a Google search opens the app but doesn’t open the post or thread itself. Extremely buggy and it will inundate up with “suggested” articles and posts
There's no ipad version, and the iPhone version works extremely poorly on my iPad. This is a shame because working with this app really needs the greater screen space the iPad offers. I have no idea why people say this app doesn't work, yet rate it three stars.
Who are they trying to fool with this app? The website is bug ridden, very poorly designed and malfunctioning. Group links never load for me but I always get pesky notifications and I only download the app garbage because I thought I’d be able to leave the group from it. It’s very unfortunate that RG became the Facebook of scientists, because the website couldn’t be worse. Shame on you RG team.
After updating to iOS 14, my phone informs me that this app seems to repeatedly paste content from other apps. This is a security/privacy violation. Can the developers comment on why this behavior is necessary? I am uninstalling the app as a result.
As I private physician, I was trained to follow research. Site and app won’t let me sign up because I don’t have institutional email. Contact page doesn’t have send button. Doesn’t like my iPhone IP address either for some reason!!
I’m using an iPad Pro and unfortunately the app doesn’t rotate if I’m having a horizontal orientation of the tablet. Please update the app to be iPad-compatible.
