Really helps me understand my place in the cosmos. Best representation of these ideas I’ve seen! I’m wondering if the location of the horizon line- with cardinal directions on it- set via the latitude adjustment- is in the wrong orientation. When I set latitude to 0 degrees, it aligns the horizon at the celestial pole, not the celestial equator as I understand it, but I’m new to these concepts. Similarly, when my latitude is set to 30 degrees, it is 30 degrees from the pole, not the equator, and thus showing the wrong position. Let me know what I’m getting wrong please! UPDATE: Thanks for the response! Many drawings later I notice that declination facing north is 90- latitude thanks to basic geometry, and thus the app is indeed spot on and I was wrong. I think I assumed declination and latitude would be equal before and now see their relation. This helps me understand where the celestial equator is in relation to my position now. Let me know if that’s still off! Cheers.
This app does everything you’ll ever ask of it, without taking a single penny of your hard-earned cash. (CORRECTION) This app does everything you’ll ever ask of it EXCEPT tell you when Betelgeuse will go supernova. I was SO hoping this app would tell me when. The devs should really fix this soon...
The only reason why it gets a 4 is that there seems to be no way to get it to show by name the position of all the planets in our solar system. Edit for clarification: As in, I cannot do a search for Pluto. When I try nothing happens. When I search for Neptune I see a circle blip when I follow the arrow. No name. So I would like to be able to see all the planets in our solar system automatically displayed along with the closer planets.
Original review: App looks nice, but it’s well over 90 degrees off: I point it southeast, but it shows north. Not useful that way. Updated review: I’m not sure what happened since the last time I opened the app, but it appears to be correct now. Unfortunately, there’s apparently no way to remove the ads, which means I won’t keep the app on my phone. Nevertheless I’ve upgraded my rating from one to three stars.
When I was younger, I had a star chart. Also have some binoculars for the stars, but that app was only a cardboard piece of paper laminated with stars on it I can actually move my phone around and hold the universe in my hand at the same time! Thanks
No annoying in app purchases. Perfect tool for backyard astronomy and keeps my little son busy too. Oh and the moon phases and the solar orbits are very nice touches. Nothing extra. Just enough. From a software engineer perspective I just like to say well done.
This app makes it so easy to identify constellations and you can even see what constellations are in different hemispheres! I love how it looks and that it is dark enough that it doesn’t blind you when you are trying to look at the sky 😊
I live in a small town in South Georgia. My neighborhood doesn’t even have street lights. Needless to say I get incredible stars at night. I use Orion’s Belt as my starting point. then I use the app to name all the stars from there. I used this app to find Venus and a host of other stars. Great app. Highly recommended.
I love this app. It doesn’t have those weird drawings of stylized swans and bears. It has the stars that I see when I look at the sky. The crosshair is great for poor light. When I can only see a few stars, I can tell which ones I’m looking at.
This app is better than all the others I have tried. I was searching for apps with more capability and found this one. Sure wish I had started with this app!
Nice and smooth operation and very easy to read Being able to set the parameters for what shows up on the screen is really really nice Plenty of information but easy enough for a beginner to use Thanks folks
I am not the person that likes a lot of apps but I love this you can search for stars and other but the only thing that I don’t like is where you can not search up galaxies and nebulas, so if you could fix that this app would be the best app, funny thing I don’t wright reviews that much so call this app a͛ t͛h͛u͛m͛b͛s͛ u͛p͛
I’m liking the app quite a bit in general, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to calibrate it to the actual sky. The sun always appears a few hours ahead of where it really is.
Love this app - my favorite star map for star hopping
Wonderful app! I use it with my 8” dob to star hop for DSO’s. I wish it could calibrate to align with stars so your could strap it directly to a scope and make it an instant go to rig. No complaints though! Give it a go - you will love it too.
Awesome app. I would have been the next Edwin Hubble if this were around 30 years ago. Better late than never. Thanks for keeping it real and not selling out to the dark side.
I’m not a really a Constellation geek but a great app to use to figure out what constellations, planets and stars your looking at in the sky. Quite educational and interesting. Really accurate.
I like the map-like format of the display. I can get all the information I want without the visual overload present in a lot of options. Great app to learn constellations and star names.
Although I like the virtual Star map program; attempting to locate a star while using the app is extremely difficult. When I aim my phone in any direction, the app is many degrees off. The alignment is so bad, that you have to look nearly 45 degrees away to see the app star that your phone is aimed at.
Wow! I never leave reviews but for this app, I felt I had to. Amazing tool to observe the night sky (I use it for Astrophotography). Very precise and complete, easy to use and free!
I ama a pro astronomer and it has precise star location and it shows me whether the Milky Way has set or rises. Great app and amazing cosmic direction GET IT RIGHT NOW!!! You’ll thank me.
This sky map shows Messier, NGC and constellations and let’s me freeze a time later in the night so I can plan my imaging session. Perfect, simple excellent!
Hi In advance, thanks for your best simple free app. In this app shows the constellations from outside sphere of sky!! It’s NOT true We watch the sphere of sky from INSIDE. Please add an option to change viewing of sphere of constellation from inside or outside. Thanks.
I can’t make heads or tail of what or how to view stars. This is one of the most difficult apps I have ever used. I paid for premium and I got nothing. I hate this app!
Simply point your device towards the sky and this application will display the names of the stars, constellations and planets. You can check the orbital position of the planet in the solar system on a separate screen. You can also display stars below the horizon. You can display the names of about 100 bright stars, constellations, ecliptic, celestial equator, Deep Sky Objects, ISS, Celestial pole, and so on. You can enlarge or reduce the display by spreading or narrowing (pinch operation) with two fingers. Toggle display / non-display of constellation line, name etc. with double touch.
