Not only does the app no longer load stories, but they sent a postal letter (!) today saying that they’re raising rates from $20 to $27. So far I haven’t been able to bring myself to NOT support local journalism, but I’m increasingly questioning whether the LJS really offers local journalism, especially when it can’t be read. This may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and sends me to healthier, more hopeful business models like the Nebraska Examiner or the Flatwater Free Press. I would pay so much more even than the raised rate to have good journalism that can be accessed!
I understand the needs for ads if you're providing the content for free. No problem with that. But, please learn how to display the ads tastefully and intelligently. As your app becomes more and more unusable, it won't matter how many ads you have if no one is using your product. Please fire your developers (one look at the app tells you they have no idea what they're doing) and fix this app. Update to new version: Wow, you managed to make it worse. Please Journal Star, fire these people. They have no idea what they're doing.
I remember having this ap a long time ago and couldn’t figure out where it went. When I went to the ap store to get it again I read other reviews and remembered all the ads that kept the ap from working properly by slowing it down to a crawl and hiding all the content the ap was designed for. I deleted this ap a long time ago because I decided it had been a pointless download that just took up space on my phone.
headlines links don’t always work, even for the top stories of the day. Ads pop up in odd places and the app will often reset all the way to beginning of the article — this very frustrating when you are trying to read the last couple of paragraphs of an article. I’m thinking of canceling my subscription because the app is so bad. Look to the Washington post for an app that works well.
I have used the journal star app for many years but am now deleting. As of today every time I try to open a story (even the Obits) I get sent to a subscription page where you have to pay $26 per month to even read the Obituary’s. I understand the need for capital to keep running but $26 a month, wow that’s a lot for some of us. Will be relying on other sources for my news from here on out!!
There are so many ways to get news events throughout each day with all the news media apps and notifications, but I used to be a digital subscriber because I simply want to access the pages of the printed editions with this app later in the day. It’s okay in the mornings but as new events happen throughout the day this app becomes so cluttered, just gives new pictures and stories but makes the page format of E-edition undiscoverable.
The menu alternates between an old one that only shows local news and one that appears well organized with tabs for national, state and regional news, etc. please fix this to be consistently the latter. Also have no ability to get back to a better menu. If you want people to support local news you need to take all those ad dollars you must be getting and provide a good product.
Having ads black out the screen 5 seconds into reading an article is absolutely ridiculous. Put your ads for us to see but I don’t need them taking up entire screen. If you don’t want a free app then charge for it. Simply trying to read a few items as most of the trash published is just propaganda anyways.
I use the LJS app daily. When the app update came out a couple of weeks ago, random articles now won’t load. Alarmingly, it seems to be mostly articles about local crime that I can’t read, despite being a paying subscriber for several years. Fix the app so that ALL articles load!
As of Oct 24, 2021, this app now forces a blanked out black screen to take over after opening. There’s clearly supposed to be an ad or video of some kind there, but there’s nothing, and no way to clear the blank screen. Typical of Lee Enterprises today: too few staff to actually do the work of being a modern media org, but their execs & owners make out like bandits.
The Journal Star is really encouraging its subscribers to go all-digital, but I’d feel a lot better about that if they would create an app that made it easy to find news. Somehow sports and obits keep floating to the top of this app. It would probably help if the app builders involved people who understand how people consume news.
To many ads and not tasteful! PLEASE UPDATE ASAP!!!!!!!!
The ads that pop up on the app are not relevant and not tasteful. If I’m paying for the e-edition I shouldn’t have to worry about ads and get a better experience. I try and login and it says the page cannot load. In a age where content is free and your business is struggling I would suggest you make a update ASAP to keep your paying customers satisfied.
I am getting this annoying black pop up screen every time I open your app for the last week. It will not let me X out. I’ve tried deleting the app and reinstalling which did not work. Deleting your app for now since it’s useless to me. Please fix this for you loyal users!
Half the articles don’t even show in all sections, the sliders show no pics of obits, description below doesn’t even say the deceased names, the old design before paid version was way better. Half the time I have to email myself the article so I can actually read it. Is there a zero stars
Links to ads before you can read an article are very annoying. Now it is going straight to an ad with each article. Harder to find latest news as there is no rhyme or reason to placement in the list of articles. Harder to find obituaries since only referenced by last name.
Since the last update, about one out of every three articles does not load. Just a white screen. I have reported it several times to support, and their solution is to uninstall and reinstall. But that does not fix the problem.
The new interface is terrible. It’s hard to read text over the pictures and is hard to see the news at a glance. I hardly ever open the app anymore. The few times I have were to see if it had been switched back to the old interface
Inexplicably, the search function is now gone. Since that had been about the only way to find anything, it’s an open question as to whether the app is worth the space it takes up on the phone. Why in the world is the Journal Star sticking with these clueless developers?
This new version is terrible please go back to the prior version. Pages jump around as you are reading them and you have to hunt for your place. Sometimes the pages just disappear and don’t come back. It’s almost impossible to read the paper this way and very painful.
Most of the articles open to a blank page. I’m not the only one experiencing this. Not to mention the content isn’t worth anything these days either. Practically no local news any more either. Don’t waste your time.
News stories used to be free with ads. Now this app requires a $26/month subscription. It’s the same news published through other local news apps free. Don’t waste your hard earned money.
Why can’t this app adjust to landscape mode? It’s totally unusable on an iPad. I’ve been patiently waiting for a year for this update, but they must have abandoned further development. No wonder newspapers are disappearing. I even pay for the Journal Star digital subscription and have to put up with the ads.
The new Journal Star app is a jumbled mess. The prior version was easy to navigate with the stories listed in a column on the side. There is no rhyme or reason to this new version. Also, the new app does not rotate to Landscape on my iPad. Please bring back the previous version. This is awful! What were you thinking?
No content is now visible within the app. I get alerts and when I try to open them it says no content available. Clearly it is available since they sent the alert. Please upgrade to work with new Apple iOS version.
Articles won’t load. The design is cluttered and more difficult to navigate. Viewing journal star content on a web browser is much preferable to this app as its currently been rolled out.
The latest update to the app has made it very difficult to use. The banners are too big for the iPad display. Also the screen is locked in portrait orientation and won’t rotate to landscape. I’ve abandoned use of the app and use the website instead.
In the finest form. LJS continues to disappoint is such a poorly crafted app From pop-under ads. That appear after selecting an article, that hijackes you to a revenue generating webpage. They make their own acronyms. LSO is London Symphony Orchestra. This and poor writing are reminiscent of the Three Stooges. One new feature. “Digital edition” is a subscribe only option. Jacking your screen and telling you that you have exceeded the number of free pages. Which is apparently one. Those that developed this abomination of an app should hang their heads in shame.
Small amounts of banner advertising is tolerable. Watching a 20-30 second video before reading an article isn't. As soon as one of those pops up I immediately close the app. If they start popping up frequently I will delete the app.
I lived in Lincoln for many years and love to keep up with things there …. But your app makes it impossible- fire the admin, AND MAKE IT FREE LIKE THE REST OF THE ONES IN AMERICA, MORONS. I guess I will use the local TV news stations. They are free, the apps work, AND THEY GET THE CONTENT CORRECT!! What a disappointment.
I used to use this for all my news. Then out of the blue it says that I have to pay for a subscription. So bummed. I guess I will have to find somewhere else to read about local news.
Where is the search function? How can I find anything other than local news that’s happened in the last day? Where is the business news? I’m a subscriber, how can I remove the ads on my app? Please update.
Unbelievable! Just when you think it can’t get any worse. Now they allow these advertisers to says that you have viruses on your phone and other scams in pop up ads. Uninstalling
If the number of stars depended on the amount and size of the ads, this would be a fantastic app. Unfortunately, the size and amount of ads seem to be squeezing the real content out. Still a substandard app.
Daily I get a pop up telling me that my phone is infected with a virus - but it’s not. And I only get the “warning” when I’m on this app! The content is not very time, but I’m not paying for poor reporting and an app full of bugs.
Love the app, but since the big update in mid December, with the new look, stories don’t load. It sits on a blank screen, and never brings up stories. Very rarely it loads a story.
Tired of trying to log on in some very unintuitive fashion. At least I get a lot of ads. Maybe the Norfolk Daily News will be better - I’m sure it will be.
I subscribed to the online paper and read the E edition every day. I absolutely hate the app!I hate the app so bad it makes me want to stop subscribing to the e edition!
Everything on this is anti trump and they don’t publish any bad articles about demorats going to jail or doing anything that would benefit the Republican Party.
