Okay, WGU, it’s time for some real talk. We’re out here trying to get our tech education, but this app? Honey, it’s like stepping into a time machine. No Face ID or password auto-fill? In this day and age? I mean, come on, we’re not trying to relive the dial-up era. And those web browser screens popping up every two seconds? Not the moment. As someone paying tuition, I expect a bit more pizzazz and a lot less ‘please log in again.’ Let’s get it together and make this app as fabulous and forward-thinking as WGU claims to be. We need less ‘back in the day’ and more ‘leading the way.’ Let’s do this!
Not sure why this app has so much backlash, it does what is expected and without issues. It seems the main issues people complain about are: - Inability to access and complete coursework. - Instability causing the app to crash. In regard to the first, this is a strange expectation. The app does have the ability to access coursework through a built-in browser, but it’s not really designed for it. All coursework should be completed through a desktop browser as this is the only fully supported method. Being able to at least view some courses through the app is simply a nice feature. As for the second, I haven’t experienced this myself. That said, reporting it to WGU’s development team, rather than using an App Store review to report bugs, would probably be the best option. My biggest complaint is that I can’t access the mail through the app, it brings you out of the app. This applies to the browser version as well though, so not entirely an issue, more of a feature request. Overall, it’s a fine app. Nothing special, but it will let you check your degree progress, handle billing, view a course overview (and provide limited access to some course material, check and manage notifications, and contact faculty assigned to your courses.
WGU saves us thousands while allowing us to earn our degrees online, it’s an affordable school, of course they’re not going to dump thousands into developing a top of the line app. This app does not deserve such a low rating, it does what it needs to do. I like that I don’t have to retype my login info every time I open the app, and it is very quick and easy to navigate to my online books. It serves its purpose of being more accessible than using the safari browser. Allowing my books to be easier to get too motivates me to actually read them more.
It’s designed to let you check basic info, get notifications, stay in touch, etc.. it does that pretty well. Can you access course content like on a desktop? Mostly, but it’s not great. Every time you read an article, you have to X out and go all the way back into the course content and find your page again. I like the idea of reading on my iPad instead of my desktop, but this isn’t quite the thing for that.
At one point I was able to do my coursework on my phone and now with the new updates, I can’t access anything and the download course as a PDF doesn’t work. This makes it difficult to do schoolwork especially since I’m recovering from a severed tendon in my hand. This app was a lot easier to maneuver a few months ago compared to now where it seems extremely confusing and half the stuff doesn’t work.
WGU is my third school, and the previous two schools had absolutely horrible apps. I can access all of my study materials from my phone too, which is super nice if i want to knock out a lecture video on a long drive. Not sure why some people seem to have a bad experience, but I have had no issues with the current version. Definitely a must for any WGU student.
The app itself is okay. It works fine on my iPhone but on my iPad, I’d say about half of the classes I’ve had between my bachelor and masters degrees haven’t worked in the app. When opening the course materials to do course readings, the app says you’re using an unsupported browser, making the app useless.
Hi. I like the app very much, it’s great to be able to study on the go, but it’s difficult to do when I can only read half of the screen. Would you be able to add screen orientation change, so I can turn my phone, and be able to fully see the course materials and/or make it more mobile screen size friendly?
Should consider adding a Face ID option so being logged out or have the app crash is less of an inconvenience. I love everything that I am able to have access to on this app, and the layout adapts to the devices I use.
I was initially very impressed with the WGU app and it’s abilities. Unfortunately as I have journeyed through my program I become less and less impressed. Options are not always available in every course and that makes it hard to have consistent study habits when you have to pivot what works. I was recently told my IT after placing a ticket that the school is just not putting money into fixing the bugs in the app. What!?!?! PLEASE FIX THE APP!!!!!! Sincerely a traveling student.
I really wanna like the app, but I have no way of knowing exactly how it functions because I haven’t been able to sign in successfully. I’ll try all the work around so far try to contact the student IT service desk via email and their call number and their text number still no response or answer, and still no luck every time I try to log on myself I’ve deleted the app and re-downloaded it but still nothing…
Not sure why the low rating on the App Store - I have been using this app since I started attending WGU last year and always use it for textbook review when I have spare moments out and about! It’s not fully featured like the desktop site but I don’t think it’s meant to be.
Just reading through the courses, the page constantly freezes and needs to be refreshed. Good for lengthy chapters where it loads all at one time, not good for clicking through multiple pages in a short time and waiting for the dial up to finish loading everything. Having white out sections because the media didn’t load is ineffective to using on the go.
Initially I was able to access my course materials/ ebooks through the app. However, it has been difficult to access course materials recently. Within the app there is a “Download Course as PDF” button, but even that link doesn’t work.
Crashes more often now when navigating external areas
More often now, when navigating to external resources like LTI/Comptia, the application will crash to the springboard. The previous 2 updates did not do this so you introduced something new or changed that now crashes the app.
The new UI is much better, smoother and appealing. I do wish you could add the option to allow users to hide completed courses instead of having to swipe to find the actively enrolled course for the semester
I’m not sure how every update makes the app worse yet it does! It shows I have no active courses when I definitely do. It also shows completed classes twice in the degree plan section, burying your active courses in a repeating list of completed courses. This app is pure garbage and they make it worse with every update.
The app will NOT stay logged in, to be fair the website do want either, but why are you putting out an app that has less functionality than the web version? Access to COS resources should be one of the points but at least the WGU native systems should work better in the app or what’s the point?
Latest update is nothing but awful. App runs a 2 frames per second when trying to scroll through classes. Doesn’t have “course search” as an option even when you manage to find the class you’re looking for. Home page is absolutely useless. You’d think the home page would only show your active classes, but no. It’s the same as your degree plan, but now you get to scroll right instead of up and down. Such a shame to see because it actually functioned well when I first enrolled in May.
The app no longer recognizes anything associated with logging in. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and it does not work, which is a shame because I’d like to be able to read my course literature when I am away from my computer.
Course material doesn't track page location because all this app likely does is cram content into an iframe. Far better results using mobile browser. App itself is clunky, offers 0 benefit over using mobile browser.
App won’t let me log in since latest update. Using the exact login credentials that I use for the desktop site. I’m able to log in there, but not here. Hindering my ability to make progress on my degree, but it’s whatever. Don’t use this app.
For a school that I put tuition into I expect the app to at least function, as soon as I logged in the app just crashed, and now every time I open the app it immediately crashes. I will raise the rating as soon as I can use the app.
Not able to use app like before. Won’t let me click on my course, error message come up stating something went wrong. I’m logging on through the internet instead. Please fix
I’m trying to take the quizzes and unit tests in wgu app on my iPhone… and all of the paragraphs are cut in half and I can’t read them. If Wgu could pleeeease put more money and effort into their app to help us students it’d sure be appreciated.
This app does not let you schedule appointments. It’s very difficult to work with in terms of seeing the course chatter and scheduling an appointment with professors.
Accessing the courses on the app don’t count towards academic activity
Hi there.. So any student at WGU who uses this app needs to know that if you are regularly accessing material via the app, watching videos for your classes, etc. THESE WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD YOU BEING ‘academically active’. ‘Academically Active’ means since this is an online school, your attendance is tracked by the software whether one is accessing the courses, completing the coursework, etc. Of the software doesn’t sense that you aren’t accessing the coursework within a 14-day period, the school /your mentor will begin sending emails to you. Therefore, you would have to access the course material on the DESKTOP in order for your activity to count. Or, at let your mentor know during check in or via email what progress you have made in the app.
I like this app, it’s more than my previous university had. Granted WGU is an online experience and this app is a good start but it needs a lot of work to clear up the bugs. I am not particularly fond of using the built in browser or whatever it is that shows up within the app. It’s not optimal and in my opinion safari does the job a million times better. Most of the content I have thus far tried to open in safari doesn’t work properly because of what I think are authentication issues. Offline access for course content would also be an amazing feature that would at least mitigate some of the issues.
The new iOS update broke the app functionality. It causes the app to attempt opening and immediately closes out. I fixed this by uninstalling and reinstalling the WGU app. Please consider fixing the window-in-window function when opening textbooks. If you accidentally touch anywhere near the edge, it returns you to the course, forcing you to have to click back into the text and resume last place of reading. There is also a bug within the login portion of the textbooks that causes the first press not to log you in, but if you close out and then go back into the textbook, it logs you in automatically.
I like the theory of having an app.. bc I travel for a living.. so having access while I'm traveling or on break at work would be awesome. I have an iPhone. Every time I try to open the videos in the coarse material... it freezes... or just doesn't even load... just a giant white blank space in the middle of the document which is hard to view anyway on an iPhone bc it won't I've shrink to fit the page, you have to scroll left to right to even attempt to read it. It's super frustrating. Awesome if you just need to check your emails and want notifications in task stream.. but otherwise needs a ton of work. Disappointing. If it's an adobe problem... well it's 2017.. work out something comparable.. bc I know a lot of us are apple users.
Awesome! Another excuse to stare at my phone all day!! Now that awful compulsion to reach for my phone before the existential dread creeps from my heart to cause me to man-cry in public, will lead to a path of lifelong learning instead of the futile temptation to curse while reading trump articles and the inevitable endless fight to save thousands of dogmatic literalists from their cognitive dissonance on social media! No longer must I slay troll on mobile apps.....or Reddit, now I can compel myself to slay my own ignorance!..... and debt to income ratio, with the power of higher education! Well played WGU. P.s. The app is handy and surprisingly functional
I've tried the beta version and it was great. It had its flaws, but that's expected in a beta. However, the full version seems to have been released too quickly as some of the same bugs carried over to the full version. I was glad to log in this morning to find that the issue with lesson links has been fixed. Compared to using Safari/Chrome/Firefox on the iPad, the browser seems to avoid common uCertify issues having to do with navigation. I haven't tried anything else like LabSim yet, but I am sure it will work great by the time I get to do so.
The newest update fixes some of the issues from the past, including blank screen errors and students unable to see course tips from their course page. However, when two different assessment types pertain to a course (objective & performance), only performance assessment information is shown; objective assessment information is missing. I’m not sure how the mobile site could get so much of this correct, but this cannot be carried over to the mobile app. As such, this app still requires some additional work before it is on par with at least the mobile site.
This app is great to get reading done without bringing around a laptop. But there is still a few kinks. When trying to do the practice test it seems like things are doing great but then it gets stuck in a loop. I've tried this 3 times. When I click the arrow to go to the next question it keeps staying at the one I'm on. It looks as though it's going to the next question but once it loads out brings back the same question. The fix is I have to close the app and reopen it and start again. I've done it 3 times now and and am only at question 60 so it is very frustrating.
I usually don't leave reviews but this app is so great that I felt compelled to write one. I've recently returned to school and this app adds to the flexibility of online schooling. I'm able to access my course material and even take quizzes. As a parent and a full time worker I need any little time I have to be able to read the material. I use it a lot on my breaks while at work. WGU hit the nail on the head with this app. They truly thought of how they could make things even more convenient for their students and I am truly thankful!!!
Love how functional and full the experience is. I know it’s important for things to be optimized for mobile, my complaint is that it is organized so different so you have to “learn” how to navigate the mobile version instead of it being a great extension of the online version if that makes sense at all. Specifically I remember trying to view the results of the final assessment for a course and there were so many extra steps and it seems the path to get there was very different than when using the browser.
I love this app when I was a student. I especially liked the task stream notifications and the ability to see if I had emails without logging into the website. I did not set up my W GU address with Gmail until later though. It's a little unfortunate though that graduate cannot use the app, because it would be really cool if the alumni community and alumni services were available through the app. I have deleted it now because it says it's only available to active students. If they incorporate alumni services I would gladly get it back.
