Lousy News Organization With A Matching Lousy App

The Canton Repository is a lousy news organization with a matching lousy app. We were subscribers to the useless hard copy newspaper for many years and did a smart thing; we canceled that subscription. We then purchased the online subscription through iTunes and that was a mistake. We paid for a year in advance since it was cheaper than monthly but the app won’t let us read articles listed as “for subscribers only” even though we are subscribers. We sent an email to The Repository advising them of the problem as instructed by The Repository and have received no response. We will not be renewing our online subscription when our one year subscription expires in Feb. 2023. Hopefully this will keep others from falling into the same trap as we did.

Excellent Canton Repository App

We subscribe to the Canton Repository and also get the physical Sunday edition. Great local newspaper fo 66 years of my life now. Just discovered this app version of the Canton Repository news which I/we really like. Works extremely well and enjoy reading the news anywhere we go or at anytime.

Great local news source

Having just moved to the area I subscribed to the Rep to help keep me informed on local knowledge and have been extremely happy with the coverage, content and the app.

Log on

Even though we pay for and receive the printed version of the Repository daily, when I log on with my mobile device it still will not let me read articles. The app says I am logged on. I have deleted the app and reloaded it, still doesn't work. This is frustrating. Any suggestions?

Nice update

I enjoy the Canton Repository app a lot. It’s always up to the minute with our local news and high school coverage as well as nationally covered news as it becomes available. Great job Canton Rep!

Canton Repository review

Need to have real, more relevant and timely reporting. Many times, your reporting is either old by the time we read it or us incomplete and shallow at best.

The Worst!

I have a monthly hardcopy subscription I pay for each month but when I’m not at home I can’t get into this app for nothing. I’ve even contacted the person it shared in the link and usually no response, says to contact someone else or get no response. What a joke this app is!!! If I could give no stars I would!!!

I live in Summit county but the Repository has a much better local sports coverage.

High School Sports

I only wish that all Stark County Schools could get equal coverage! Canton McKinley, Massillon get much more coverage than other Federal League teams…

Terrible!

I will Never use this app again. I have called for help so many times Ive lost count. I am always told I have to subscribe every time I try to read any article. I can’t read any articles at this time. Not sure what it takes to be able to read the news paper.

Worst customer service ever!!!

It’s impossible to reach Customer Service! Phone just rings continuously. Our delivery is pathetic. As of Dec. 26, 2022, we have not received a paper in four days. Gannett Publishing which is out of state apparently doesn’t care about whether their subscribers receive a paper!

Obnoxious pop-up

It seems you’re forced to turn on alerts, even you don’t want notifications. If you don’t want to accept alerts, you have to close and reopen the app every time you read one story.

Never receive all the news

Found many stories on other sites like Facebook that are from the Rep but are not found in their own app. If you’re going digital, do it right.

I’ve subscribed to your app. Why does it CONTINUALLY blast full page solicitations to subscribe for .99 cents when I’m already paying more than that monthly???

Won’t work

It says it supports family sharing, but it just spins forever when I hit Restore purchases. I’ve resorted to using the website in the browser

Terrible

Canton Rep constantly logs me out during use and now, while attempting to reset the online use, I cannot recover the e edition. Not worth the hassle!

Staying in Touch

I'm a stark county native, but recently moved to Chicago for college. This app is a great way to keep in touch with my community. Very easy to use, lots of necessary capabilities like links to Facebook and twitter. Only complaint is the limited selection of articles and the inability to access the cantonrep web home page for more info. Other than that, I'm very happy that I found a way to keep up with what is up back home.

Terrible app

You can't enlarge the font size, the control does nothing. Text is too small to easily read even on a 12" screen. Moving jumping animated ads within stories make it tough to read. Many "stories" are blank, with no text at all. Polls don't work in the app. News is updated very slowly, making many stories over a day old before they hit the app. Pictures are generally huge and pixelated, or cropped in weird ways. Columnists pictures are also huge and very closeup, making them appear distorted etc. Scrolling the stories on the left of the screen is hit and miss...you'll be trying to get to other stories and it will refresh, not keeping you on the story you were trying to read. Doesn't anyone who works at the Rep ever use this app? Adding more info...you now get an ad on launch, and after reading 2 or 3 stories, you're told you've reached your limit of free articles. There are now moving ads in the middle of stories, and ads along the left side disguised to look like stories that launch web sites. This app has become useless.

Wow! You've come a long way baby!!!!

I left Canton in 1985 and suffered through the early websites and mobile site. Wow! You've come a long way baby!!! Great Great App!!! Love the layout, love that I can continue to the next story. The ads aren't obtrusive. Graphics are superb! Uh, the Obits section hasn't been updated in over 2 months?? I'm sure this must be a new app glich?

Excellent Content

The Rep app is for subscribers only now and allows guests to read only a few articles per month. No one would begrudge the paper's need to pay the bills, however I wish The Rep would have explored another revenue generating strategy that would have permitted open access.

Great news app

I have a couple other area news apps. I have to say this one keeps up to date even on weekends unlike one I will not name. They should take lessons from this app of how to keep up to date. Great job repository.

Try again

Like the last design. Lot easier to navigate through. What happened to the photos section? HOF there instead? Really? HOF info was just fine in the news section. The ads are ridiculous. I’m sure it’s great revenue, but put them in their own section so they don’t interrupt every other crazy thing going on with this “new app”!
