I like the idea behind this - to automate scanning ingredient lists and help educate me on some of the crazy things in food. But it not quite there. I am hoping they can extend this to allow modifications (I am okay with Honey!) and give an overall score to help me compare two products against each other (1 red is equivalent to how many yellows?) The heart is the in the right place, I am looking forward to the app being able to follow.
Ok so this prompt literally just appeared on my screen to rate this app. I have only been using this app for one hour. I guess I like it so far, but I don’t feel comfortable giving it a five star rating with only one hour usage since I don’t fully know the features. I will say that I haven’t understood why it rates agave nectar as potentially harmful (Is it because of where it lies highly on the glycemic index scale like sugar, or that it’s “too processed”, or both, if in excess, potentially leading to something like hypoglycemia or diabetes?). So it would be nice to know if there are links to the empirical research/reasoning behind the ingredient ratings. Anyway, a fairly good app for this first-time user who wants to make healthier choices and be aware of alternatives for better nutrition.
This app has two basic call outs for “bad” ingredients (1) problematic and (2) questionable. This two tier system is a little too simple for an app and has one major flaw - it identifies added sugar as questionable and not problematic. The ingredient, added sugar, that is the main driver behind the majority of chronic disease in America is “questionable” and not “problematic”? This app leans into the obfuscation of nutrition where preservatives are more demonized than the huge amounts of sugar being added to our diets - the causality is clear. This system allows companies to sell sugar loaded products that are given a “health washing,” because they are “natural” For example, their bbq article recommends Noble Made by the New Primal’s BBQ Sauce, which uses Pineapple Juice as a main ingredient. Pineapple Juice is mainly fructose and should be avoided in any healthy diet, as fructose is not metabolized by the body and goes right to the liver, causing fatty liver disease (among many other problems). Nutrition science is becoming clear. This app is not.
I advise all of my clients to read their ingredient labels because I believe it to be one of the best things you can do for your health. But I used to always run up against a wall because it can be difficult for my clients to remember all of the hundreds of different additive names, what they exactly are, why they’re not great for the body, etc. Trash Panda takes away all of that stress and guesswork with their easy to use app!
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I downloaded this. It’s fantastic! You scan the food and it pops up with a list of dangerous ingredients. All of those ingredients are then linked to a short explanation and articles/studies about them. As someone who is very skeptical and needs to see data, I really appreciate that.
You have to pay handsomely if you actually want to use this app on the regular. I can use my camera app on my phone to enlarge the ingredients on products in the grocery store. I can use my notes app to compile a list of products that I use and consume regularly. What about genetically modified and/or bioengineered foods that are a part of the ingredients list. You can not find this information out. It seems to not be a concern. Don’t get me wrong. There are some positives in this app. I just think that it needs to have more focus on the entire packaging of each product.
My whole family is changing our diet and cutting out foods with certain ingredients. As we try new things, some of the food we love and some of it we hate. It’s super convenient to be able to scan something that we like and then put it in a list so we know to get it again. Love the app, use it all the time.
This is a good app to help quickly find questionable additives in food. Two quick improvements needed: 1. The camera is not self-focusing so it makes scanning barcodes a little awkward and taking pics of ingredients difficult 2. You cannot crop photos once you take them so you often end up including a bunch of text you don’t want to include when snapping ingredients because of issue 1.
I don’t ever give app reviews, but this one deserves 5 stars. I can’t believe this information is free and from credible sources! I like how they link where they got it from and give description on why ingredients are helpful. This app has made me rethink what I eat and has helped me become healthier in my choices. Thank you tiktok and the creators of this awesome app.
This app is great! If you're trying to clean your diet, this is a necessity. It also contributes to defeating stomach and 'gut' issues by giving you information to be able to make a better decision. Nobody needs an app to not just eat crap. This is 1 step further. You'd be amazed what's in the foods you think are 'healthy'. Highly recommend!!
I have been buying the cheapest eggs I could at the grocery store and noticed that they were small, even though the box at large, and that the yolks were popping every time I use them. So I switched up to, but I thought was a higher Ground an egg land best. Same thing happened. So I decided to go up at about $.50 on my budget and bought these contented hen free range, organic eggs, size large the difference I noticed was a medium the eggs are quite big they have nice big plump yolks. I’ve been using them for about a week now and they seem great inside of the box talks about their hens being free ranged and a special message inside.
I can hardly pronounce half the ingredients in some labels, this app makes it easy to understand what those complicated ingredients generally do and even gives you resources to make your own judgment. Knowledge is power! I use this every time I see an essay written for ingredients.
This is the best shopping companion. It’s a scary realization when you think you’re eating healthy and then find out you’ve been putting harmful ingredients in your body. This app has helped educate me and makes picking items at the grocery store so much easier! 10/10 would recommend.
As I holistically heal from breast cancer, there are additives In EVERYTHING that are counter productive to my health. Trash Panda has helped me not only shop cleaner and empty out my home of unwanted toxins… I am gaining a wealth of information…and knowledge is power. Thank you for this app. It’s the most valuable app I’ve downloaded to date. Tressia Mitchell
Trash Panda is perfect for just about everyone. Educating yourself on what goes into the products you buy is so so important and it makes long ingredient lists far less intimidating. I know I am making better shopping decisions since downloading Trash Panda
Consumer consciousness is so important and this app is at the heart of it. I feel way more knowledgeable about what I’m putting in my body with Trash Panda. I’ve always been interested in the marketing of certain foods as healthy for corporate gain. Information is everything!
I can’t eat gluten, msg (in any form) or artificial sweeteners so I’m happy to find an app that points out something like ‘natural flavors’, which I try to avoid and even says why it’s not good for any of us. I’ll be suggesting this app to my friends and family.
This app lists sugar (including while it is inside of unprocessed fruit), dates, and citric acid as a “questionable” ingredient and additionally lists canola and soybean oil as “potentially harmful.” This app spreads fearmongering claims about GMO foods without basis. Uses phrasing such as “this ingredient is made of chemicals” when all ingredients are chemical in nature. Cites sources without full context, includes low ratings of foods even when including that there is only anecdotal evidence to show that it is harmful, and ultimately will fuel orthorexia. Dangerous and pointless app. Don’t download.
That is great but I hope. You can find a way to pick and choose your ingredients that you agree with. I trust much what you tell me but there may be something I disagree with. Also bad reviews will not have any way to down you other the app issues if there is any.
this app is very easy & quick to use compared to other ingredient scanning apps. you don’t need to watch ads every time you scan an item without a membership which is amazing. also, when some potentially harmful ingredients are contained , it provides an explanation to what the ingredient is & why it is harmful. i don’t rlly have any problems with the app, it works smoothly , it’s informative & helpful, and it delivers exactly what is needed. overall, this app is amazing i love it sm 🫶
Trash Panda is actually my favorite app! It is easy to use and helps me make good choices because it does the work of evaluating a product for me. Shopping for groceries is easy now and if I come across new products, I can scan it right then and there. Love it!
Trash Panda allows you to see exactly what your food is made of. There is no hidden meanings just simple, easy to understand results. You may think you’re eating healthy but with the app, you’ll know for sure.
Having this in my pocket as we shop for food has been a life saver. It is helping us make smarter decisions with what we consume and the brands we trust. This is a must have for everyone that want to know what is in the products they buy.
I’m a college student and started shopping for myself this last year. Trash Panda makes navigating the grocery store and figuring out what to buy so easy. Their shopping lists are my favorite part. Highly recommend!!
It barely takes seconds to open Trash Panda and scan items in the grocery store. The app has almost every product and shows you exactly what's going into it - with scientific research to prove it. Love Trash Panda.
I love all the information this app gives me when I’m shopping. I have some dietary restrictions, and trash panda helps me quickly check items before I buy. I use it every week!
The Trash Panda app makes shopping for my family so easy! The shopping lists section is my favorite feature because it gives me healthy ideas for weekly dinners.
Like seriously I just go to the store and scan stuff for fun. I like knowing the ingredients and this is so quick and easy when I’m too lazy to look. Actually makes me make wiser food choices. 10/10 recommend.
Absolutely love this app and so impressed by all of the functionality it offers. I thought I was a pro at reading ingredients labels until I got Trash Panda, and now I can see all the questionable ingredients I was missing!
This is the one app I encourage all of my clients to use. It is a valuable resource if you care about your health. Important research-based information so you can make an informed choice, easy to use, and a time saver. NO MORE LABEL READING at the store!!
While, I love the concept of the app I think it would be great if you guys added the option to add a list of ingredients that people do not want in any of their food and have a pop up as personal allergy or something
And I was recommending this app widely. Today I could not take a picture of the ingredients even though I had five uses left for this month. I guess the upside is I’m about to free up a little storage space on my phone. It was a great app though! Maybe someone else will make a free one and make money off advertising instead of devoted users.
This is shameful. Not only does this app promote fearmongering tactics to scare consumers out of perfectly safe foods- the articles it cites are not even decent science. Meta analyses and review articles exist on MANY of these ingredients discussing their safety and use and they are ignored for more flashy garbage ‘healthline ‘articles that lack science knowledge. And TWO sources for canola oil… there meta analyses of randomized controlled trials in this and you chose TWO website articles?! This is embarrassing.
This app takes the guess work out of known w which foods are healthy and which foods to avoid. Now I’m sure I only give my kids healthy snacks and foods.
I’ve only had one item not scan and that may have been a glitch on my end. Gives descriptions and definitions for various ingredients you may be u familiar with. Love this app!
I’m a bladder cancer patient and this has helped me identify the cancer feeding ingredients in food. And even in water that has been filtered! Who knew!
Loved this when it was free! $40/year to use is ridiculous!
I really liked this app when you could scan as much as you wanted. But only 5 free scans a month is nothing. Healthy food is already so much more expensive to budget for and now they want $40 a year to use this?!??
Love this app but it’s useless in the grocery store where you need it. Rarely connects. When it does and you scan, no results come back. So you have to buy your groceries and find out if they are bad when you get home. Worthless.
Before the app really took off it was completely free in every kind of way I don’t care for all the extras but required to pay for more scans is ridiculous shame on you for turning something very good into a money making scheme as always.
I’m not excited about being charged in full literally seconds into using a 7 day “free” trial. If I can’t trust your business methods how can I trust your data. With that and the first 2nd and third failure immediately following, I’m probably going to delete and refund.
