I love the new app. I have an iPhone 6S Plus. That’s a pretty old device, though it runs the latest version of iOS. The app runs just fine on this device. However, I also have an iPod Touch, 7th gen. This is a much newer device, released in 2019. I’ve had mine since 2020. It also runs the latest version of iOS. Oddly enough, video clips from the “Watch” page don’t play on the iPod Touch. Live stuff will play. But if I tap on a video from “Featured Clips” or “Washington Journal” or “Q&A”, the page loads up, with a blank space where the video player is supposed to be. If I tap on that blank space, I can see the video player, with the start and end time and the play button. I can tap the play button, but the video never starts playing. I hope you can test it on an iPod Touch and figure out the problem. The iPod touch is my goto device for consuming media around the house.
Rather than a central place for all your podcasts and stuff, it would be way better to focus on your video content. I really want to see other clips that include the same speaker, or the same topic. Search and tagging could get it there.. but I sense this was designed with the intent to get all the features in the same app, which isn’t very useful. I’ll use a podcast app for the podcasts.. Update: Thanks for the response! As a mobile dev, I would say though that you’ve got a bit of a “straddling canoes” problem then.. The app is trying to be a home for a smattering of features rather than having a focused purpose. Btw, social media apps can’t do what you could do with an focused on cataloguing cspan content, social media is only really good for recent content, which seems to be also what this app is doing. Anyways, I would still love an app that was trying to have a full archive like your website does, and I would love it even more if there was an audio only option, so I can listen to speeches while I drive. Thanks!
Way to go, C-SPAN! Finally an app to watch political events without TV talking heads or commercial interruptions. I love how C-SPAN just lets you see the whole thing and this puts it all on my phone to watch. Quick take: it's easy to find live coverage of events, and the Featured Clips are timely and a great way to catch-up on what's newsy each day. Best of all you get free, live access to the big political events. As with other TV nets' apps you have to sign-in to watch the actual 3 C-SPAN TV channels (I guess that's fair because that's how C-SPAN is funded). All in all I'm giving this top rating for its simplicity and for giving me what I most want to watch from C-SPAN.
Sometimes when networks release apps they are buggy, video streams do not load well or the app crashes. The C-SPAN app is just incredibly functional, smooth and easy to use. I love the live events being right in the home page, so when I want to see a vote in the House, it is right there and plays incredibly well. I like C-SPAN (even though many callers are incredibly misinformed) it provides a great public service to the country and this app helps make that service a lot easier to access.
The app is fantastic for being able to watch so many hearings and other events. What it lacks is a way to save where you are at on a given video. What would also be useful is to have the ability to move ahead or back up a little, say in 15 or 30 second intervals. What might be nice additionally would be to be able to receive notifications to remind you that something you started hasn’t been finished. At present, an awesome and indispensable app.
I love C-SPAN, and it would be great to watch it on the iPad I have next to me while working. The iPhone view shrunk onto a horizontal iPad screen leaves much to be desired. Edit - iPad in landscape mode doesn't automatically rotate iPhone apps, but there's two gray buttons on the lower right of the display. One rotates the iPhone app to horizontal, the other zooms in. With both of those I can get full screen video on iPad 😃
To developer who responded to my original review below… Please reread it. What I’m saying is that you’re asking ppl to sign in to a cable provider in the LISTEN section of the app. Why would you have to sign in to LISTEN? I understand the watch part. I won’t bother with commentary on how C-SPAN should be provided to EVERYONE with no boundaries. That’s not the point. I’m saying your UX is wrong. Listening should have nothing to do with cable providers. Watching, maybe, but not listening. When I go to the Listen section and select a stream, it asks me to select a TV network provider to watch live. This is under the LISTEN section. What’s that about?
Love the app, but one issue I have is that it doesn’t use the media controls that integrate apps like this into the rest of the iPhone, making it a little awkward to use. It doesn’t appear in Now Playing in Control Center, the notification screen, or on the Lock Screen. I thought it was just a problem with my iPhone, till I installed the app on my iPad, and have the same issue there. Would live to see this fixed.
This app is smooth, it’s elegant, it’s well laid out. However, I would love a way to make the video Picture in Picture so I can browse Twitter and other apps while watching C-Span. If you can do this the app would be perfect and I can update my review to 5 stars.
The new C-SPAN app is slick, easy to use and gives me exactly what I crave: Hours and hours and hours of raw footage from government meetings and hearings. I don’t trust ANY media outlet to bring me the truth. The only way for an Okie like me to really know what the government is doing is to tap directly into the D.C. political hive-mind and inform myself. This app does that! Really hope they make a Book TV app!
Excellent. Outstanding. Amazing. THE ONLY PEOPLE who should download this app are 1. American patriots, 2. people who care about democracy, 3. people who believe in Freedom, 4. people who are opposed to corruption, and 5. people who care about other people. And 6. anyone else who is planning to vote at some point in the future or who wants to find out what’s going on.
I’m a 23yo sick of media sensationalism and marketing (especially during election cycles)— I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying having the C-SPAN app. The ads are minimal, the UI is simple, the feeds are fast + high quality. Definitely a new mainstay for my daily news toolkit, and so cool to see the inner workings of government through an unfiltered lens
The app itself used to work great but I don’t know what happened. After about 1/2 - 1 hour into Wash Journal, the screen goes black and stops working altogether. Deleted the app and re-downloaded, did the same thing. Please fix this. With regard to the content, CSpan Washington Journal has turned into a right-wing mouthpiece for the ruling class who want to turn us away from Democracy and toward Authoritarianism. No longer fair and balanced.
Wow. That's all I can say. There are so many glitches but worst of all is you do screen mirroring and instead it switches to picture - in - picture on your phone. This means on a frantic work morning at 6 am all I want to do is watch a few minutes of C-SPAN and instead I get a frozen screen, can close the app because the little Picture in Picture is bouncing around and it won't allow me to shut off my alarm, check other apps or even check the time. This app is horrible.
It’s shocking how much of an improvement this app is! No cable just Sling tv, but I can still at least view Washington Journal live in the app or just listen to audio. The portrait to landscape transition is awkward, compared to other apps, but it does work on iPad. It still has room to get better and be more intuitive, but I’m looking forward to more improvements.
The on-demand feature seems to have disappeared from a few weeks ago. And no search function for what is available. very limited offerings. Two of the most important debates in the nation tonight and neither available live or later. New York or Pennsylvania. and very difficult to post comments. Every single nickname I tried was “taken“
This app uses a lot of cellular data when not connected to Wi-Fi. I had hoped it would offer the ability to download recorded programs for offline viewing or listening, but it does not. Furthermore, playback just stops when you sleep the screen. It should keep playing so you can listen to the audio, say, when walking or driving. Disappointing app. Removing it from my phone.
This appears to be a great app. But I wish the audio would stay on if I switch to something else on my phone (iPhone). The C-SPAN Radio app does this. I was hoping there might be a setting to enable audio to stay on, but I don’t see such as setting.
As one of the first to download this app, I was enthusiastic about its potential, but it seems like they launched it and then largely ignored it. There are months-old clips in the limited menu while the actual channels continue to feature a lot of great content. The app needs to drastically expand its menus to include many more of the author interviews, history lectures, and discussions found on the cable channels.
Please develop and release a TVOS, Roku, and other versions of this app to help expand the access of this platform. The live and raw broadcasts without corporate twists is what Every Living Room in America needs— NOW! Thank you for many years of service!
Specifically, it needs to be able to be played in picture in picture mode so one can listen to C-SPAN 1, 2, or 3 when doing other tasks on the iPhone. It’s available in the latest iOS.
I’ve loved my C-SPAN radio app for years and am glad that we finally have an app with videos of not only the long-form programming C-SPAN is known for, but also the highlights from the week too!
While being a longtime supporter of C-SPAN, I was so excited to find the app. It gives me the experience I expect with on demand access regardless where I’m at during my day. The app is easy to use and understand.
It’s great! Do I need the C-Span Radio app anymore
I love the app, everything I love about CSPAN all wrapped up in one! I do wonder if I can delete the other app now, since I’m guessing it won’t have anymore updates
It would be nice if I could watch this full screen on my I-pad. It is the size of a phone screen as is. When I switch to horizontal view it gets even smaller. Time for you to catch up with tech although it is nice you have gotten somewhere you have a ways to go…
CSpan has history programs but there’s no way to find or search for them. There is NO search feature at all. Search feature which allows one to search across ALL of the various channels for any given program. Please work on that.
I downloaded this app to my ipad to watch the Jan 6 hearings but it for sure is meant for a phone. It would be nice to have a dedicated ipad app that works the same (but in landscape mode) Thanks
I’d welcome customisation in settings. Move what I do watch (WJ) to top of display order, featured clips and the rest of the noise to the bottom or off screen all together.
It would be nice to actually watch C-SPAN via this app. Unfortunately, that is not what this app does. I wanted to watch a segment on C-SPAN 3, but couldn’t get it to open. I also wanted to see what was going on on C-SPAN 2. Again, couldn’t open it. It seems that if you want to view or listen to anything other than what is featured, you’re out of luck. And that is very disappointing.
As far as I can tell, there’s no button to save your place in the middle of a video and have the video appear in a folder of bookmarked videos. This would be helpful.
So excited that C-SPAN finally has an app to view live government events on my phone and iPad! I’m very much looking forward to the AppleTV version of the app. Is there an expected timeline for it?
Cannot watch since my cable provider is not listed. App does not show complete list so I cannot watch Washington Journal live. Also support link is not functional. Deleting this app since it does not work. Could not locate More page or Technical support to report problem.
Watched most of first night of RNC on C-Span, and enjoyed the uninterrupted coverage. Expected the same on second night of RNC, but they crashed! Suddenly coverage turned into a continuous rolling of names of individuals. All night long, every time I opened the app same meaningless mass of names. If same thing happens tomorrow night I’ll delete this app!
I wish it were possible to access older recordings of congressional hearings and the like. Otherwise I really appreciate being able “to hear it from the horses mouth”.
Best app to stay up to date on what’s going on in Washington and around the world. Flawless design and great features. Do your civic duty and make up your own mind with the C-SPAN NOW app!
I second Steve Jones March 16 assessment as to overall iPad functionality. The iPad is not an iPhone. Current complaint: Cannot return to main page after viewing video. Click video to view and the app remains stuck (no Back buttons, etc) on this page. Close/reopen the app several times without refresh success. I have to completely shutdown and restart the iPad. Device: iPad Air, 3rd Gen
