Democracy Now!

It's difficult to review the app without commenting on the show's content, so let me get that part out of the way. Democracy Now is, hands down, the best news daily going. Free from corporate influence, relying on grass roots support, they don't have to march to "big money's" drum and come across as the best place for journalists to employ their education and skill with integrity. The app is perhaps the latest development in making their message accessible, but there's still room for improvement. It's tremendously convenient to access the show simply by clicking on an icon. However, if the viewer has limited access to wifi, it's content is not apparently stored to be obtained without using data minutes. Some of us are privileged, and thankful, for the donations of others to maintain the show's quality and integrity, yet do not have the resources to purchase a smart phone with data minutes. It would work better for us if the app allowed us to store content when within wifi range so we could view it later. Also, the app is geared for smartphone use, but I rely on my iPad. It would work better for me if there was a companion iPad app to make landscape viewing and entry more convenient. Moreover, I've found that some days allow live access to the show through the app but not others. Lastly, the "contact" link sometimes is insufficient in allowing my iPad to move away from and comeback to the entry screen.

I can’t get the app to play videos anymore. It might be because I updated iOS. Also, the app doesn’t have short fast forward/buttons, which is a real flaw. The news, however, is great. Watching (or reading or listening to the headlines every day would make anyone pretty well informed in just 10 minutes per day. I recommend the headlines to anyone who wants to be well informed, regardless of your political opinions. The other segments are interesting and informative as well. They have an anti-war, pro human rights, pro-democracy, pro-choice bias, but are very informative. Everyone has a bias, so I’m not saying this is bad.

I am thankful that I can listen to the newscast on my way to work without watching the video. When I’m home, watching the video is great—they have incredible guests—but I don’t always have time so the number one thing I appreciate about the app is that I can listen to the newscast without streaming video which eats up data. Since I’m here a couple things I appreciate about Democracy Now in general: The news is not often something to celebrate, and hardly ever is it good news but I think being informed is one of the best choices a human living in this time can make. Democracy Now sites their sources, allowing the public to find information out on their own. Another really important thing I think people should do: their own research. Don’t just take what newscasters say for the complete truth! Besides the fact that they generally have a limited time to cover certain stories (you can always learn more) you should be able to confirm or deny what you’re being told. Democracy Now gives you the tools to do that. This transparency is why I continue to return to Democracy Now to keep up with current events. Thanks DM!

OK, this app has really improved but there are still technical features that would be nice to have, such as notifications. However, it gets five stars for being the best news around. And Because I am seriously upset that the App Store will not allow users to search for it. I’ve installed this app three times now and each time I had to go and Google “democracy now app an Apple store” and don’t get my browser open the link in the Apple Store. It is apparently impossible to search for Democracy Now in the App Store. It doesn’t matter if you write it exactly the way it is listed including the !, It will not come up and instead you get a whole bunch of useless news apps. I’m not going to speculate on why this is but I would like to know if the app owner does know by any chance.

To explain my 2 stars - I love love love DN! and want to use the app to share to social media (instead of the website on a browser), but it’s far too glitchy to do so. I listen to the podcast version on Apple Podcast daily and always want to turn to the app right away to go share the videos and articles. The app is great in so many ways - in terms of accessibility of and easily searching for content. But the articles are glitchy and at this time, I am unable to scroll past the first paragraph. I can see that there are “modules” of text etc that kinda move around when I try to scroll and it won’t scroll past the first one. I have barely used the app because in the past when I *could* read the full article, when I wanted to copy portions of the transcript to share with the link, it wouldn’t allow me to do more one paragraph at a time. I always put it in my mind to go to my laptop to the website to share when I’m able, but life gets busy and I forget. It would be great to go to the app as I’m listening away from my laptop to immediately share what I’m listening to. Please look into it and update the app (it’s been two years?) - I would love love love to use it!!

Don't look for a balanced approach to politics here. This is app is about bashing President Trump period. Too bad, how do people listen to this crap every day? Think for yourselves, you don't need this brainwashing app!!! Was hoping to find real discussions on issues affecting people on the street like me, you would think the President is the only thing that matters in the whole world. What about jobs, the economy, our states, our communities? I'm so tired of Trump is bad... who cares, vote him out next time, let's talk about something else. What policies are Democrats or Republicans introducing, what bipartisan bills are moving forward, what about the opioid epidemic, how are our states meeting the challenges facing its citizens. Why can't just one app get off the Trump derangement partisan train? Totally worthless one sided, tell people what they want to hear not what they need to know, garbage.

Democracy Now has become my go to source for quality unbiased thought provoking news. Unfortunately, the app does not have the same quality. I do love that I can listen to the entire broadcast when I miss it on the radio. However, I consistently experience the app shutting down in the middle of my listening while on Wi-Fi, and some times can’t open it at all unless I delete the app and reinstall it. I give the app 4 stars because I love listening to the broadcasts and their content. If I were to rate the tech of the app itself based on my experiences, I would have to give it a 2 or 3.

I love Democracy Now. Essential news source. The app went without an update for a very long time. It wasn’t even optimized to fit on an iPhone X screen. Super glitchy too. So happy they’re updating it again. It finally looks normal on my phone. I hope the developers read this because they are doing a great job! There are still performance and smoothness issues but I will look past them. Just glad the app is up and running again. Hope they keep providing continuous updates to keep the app fresh. Exceptional integrity, with a no nonsense type of reporting that we haven't seen in over 30 years! If the American people and people around the world were in a position to view this show, it would be a boon for the people who actually need information the MSM is not always reporting. I thank Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzales, Narim (I do not want to misspell Narim's last name, my sincerest apologies, I attempted to look it up but cannot find the information on their website, sigh) for your steadfast dedication to bring incredibly important stories to light and never backing down!

My only complaint centers around its share capabilities. It’s easy to share a particular story, but how do I share the entire show? And why do I want to share the whole show? Because that’s the only way to share the musical break. I have to use my computer, copy the link for that day’s show and tell a friend to forward to minute 46 to catch the musical break. Please please please make your musical breaks separate just like the stories. Thanks.

This app is great! It has a clear interface, and I love how I can choose to view video, listen to audio, or read a transcript. And that I can do these things either with an entire broadcast or by individual segment. I haven't encountered any other news/journalism app that is so flexible. One improvement idea: Provide immediate user-feedback when tapping a button. For example, sometimes I don't know if the app noticed that I tapped the Listen (headphones) button until audio begins playing several seconds later.

Really great source to get information about what is happening. From what I know, Democracy Now is not owned by any huge corporations...it is an independent organization. MSNBC, CNN, Fox and others are owned by corporations, so they tend to only cover what THEY want people to see. On the other hand, Democracy Now covers everything that the can, here in America and around the world. Delete all the main stream media apps and move to Democracy Now to get unbiased, and unfiltered news reports. Thank you to all of the people who are part of Democracy Now!

To be clear I give DN as an organization and a daily news show a 500 star rating and my review is purely app based-- I am a long time listener/watcher but I generally get my daily DN on the train listening via the iPhone app. Recently I have been consistently getting an error from the app saying the Internet connection appears to be offline/no connectivity when I try to load the audio, even though my internet is working fine and I can load the video with no problems. I listen every day but this error is making it really difficult to do so, so if you could help out that would be much appreciated!!! Thanks for everything you guys do- Steve

I’ve been listening to “Democracy Now!” for years, it’s one of the few new sources that actually stimulates people to look up additional information about the stories that they cover. I never heard about a military base in Diego Garcia until I heard about it on “Democracy Now!”. There are all kinds of examples of information that nobody is talking about other than Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez and company. Thank you and please keep up the excellent journalism!

When the (now referred to News Hour, on PBS) first broadcast it was a place to go for unbiased news. Something I’ve always been passionate about. It started at a time when reporters saw their work being stifled, in a time of misinformation, as we see today. Because as a whole the US does not value this important information, they’ve been bought and paid for 🙁 Thank goodness you are here. Thank You Maureen

Good app. Although I often have my own oppinion about most stories, this app has worked on my tablet, but I have not used it there since updating it to OS or IOS 14, but have since that update used it on my 7 plus phone, but it seems to freeze up when the video is turned on, and needs fixing. Just thought I would let you know just incase I am the only one that is noticing this. O by the way I am using voiceover. From Peter Earl Frandsen

Democracy Now provides the most unbiased news with no corporate interests involved. It is one of the only news sources that I trust. I think the app could use a little upgrading however. It’s not the most organized, and I am not sure how to find the war and peace report. But besides these issues it definitely does the trick and I know they are not rolling in money and doing the best they can. 10/10 would recommend :)

I am so glad this app exists. I am able tinwatch the daily show so much more and It works much better for me than the ITunes video podcast. However I wish that I could have the option to download the video if I am going to leave my house (where it streams from the internet) and not finished listening. I also wish the audio for the video would keep playing when I need to access other things on my phone.

Democracy Now! is the best news agency I've found, by far. Their coverage is focused on being informative and educational, which is very rare in American media, these days. As for the app itself, it is easy to navigate and I appreciate the option to either watch or listen to the newscast, depending on one's data availability. "Just say no" to corporate media and "yes" to this independent, nonprofit, refreshing source of actual news.

I am having problems with the most recent version of Democracy Now which I did not use to have? I have been dependent on this show for many years as a primary news source and like to watch it over listening to it however, as I watch it for a bit the sound just stops and the screen sometimes freezes and I have to keep pressing the arrow on the screen to continue to watch. It will happen over and over! I know it is not my I-phone (just got an 11) This is most annoying—can someone please help!Thanks, Andrea

I really love this program, but wish the interface was updated to fit to the size of all sizes of phones. I wish the app would be updated to fit screens of all phone sizes and the interface was a more organized/attractive.

This app highly compliments the daily news program on Mind TV. I highly recommend this app as the #1 news source for socially responsible, free-thinking and/or liberal Americans across out nation & abroad. Democracy now is consistently one of the best news sources out there. They stand alone as THE left of center news source. For being a source without millions in funding and ad revenue, I’d expect their app to not be the best. I was dead wrong, the app allows you to easily read and navigate news articles. Simple, clean layout that gives you news in a readable and minimalist format. 2 years old, but I can’t see why an update is warranted for this app. Amy Goodman does a phenomenal job of presenting stories and sharing news; not focusing on pushing a narrative like other, larger outlets. Many consider this show to lean left (even far left), but it’s still good information.

I listen to this show practically every morning through this app. Video quality is clear as well as the audio which I listen through. I listen primarily through a home router and once in a while the audio play stops. I press pause where I un-pause after like 5 sec. After this step, it works.

DemocracyNow is certainly a beacon of light amid a vast interconnected network of corporate-controlled media outlets. This app gives free and easy access to truly thoughtful journalism, airing every day with a genuine concern for peace, justice, equality, democracy, human rights, and speaking out about abuses of power when other news organizations keep quiet. I recommend this app, and DemocracyNow, to everyone keen to be informed.

They have some unrealistic beliefs like that all or most people who take unemployment benefits do so because they need to and not just because it’s free money - but if you look beyond, it’s actually interesting news almost every time.

As stated in the title my only gripe is that you can’t change the screen orientation for when I’m viewing the app on my ipad while on the magic keyboard. Other than that, incredible app and one of the best sources for news out there for sure.

Check them out, the truth can set you free, of misinformed perception.

I truly appreciate Democracy Now! which is one place I find world need daily. However, the app have streaming issues such that it consistently rewinds live shows and/or freezes indefinitely. I would love to listen to the live show without these challenges and have yet to encounter a smooth streaming experience. I’ve used the app for about 6 months.

If you want news with out fluff, and a global perspective that influences Us policy m, this is it! Amy and staff deliver the tough and informative seeking questions that are supposed to be asked but would never be asked because of corporate silencing. You want news has intention to inform so you can be called to meaningful action... well this is it.

Possibly the best, most intuitive apps I have ever used... If you want to watch, simple. If you want to listen to conserve data on your cell, boom, easy. If you want to search for past shows or web exclusives, they pop right up in the right order. Democracy Now is thorough!

The news content is great but the streaming can be tough to use. Especially if you want to watch the live shows in the morning. If you aren’t watching on a WiFi connection, the stream nessus up a lot. It would also be really nice to have audio only available during live. It doesn’t work well for commuters.

Democracy Now covers the real news that the mainstream entertainment news channels won't. Real news isn't as flashy but it's the truth that is necessary for an informed electorate to understand where we are and decide what kind of nation we will be. PS- The app is great & has a built in search function.

I don’t know exactly why but for whatever reason when I try to use this app the video just seems like it never loads so it doesn’t let me play anything and I end up having to go to the website and just watch the videos there. Maybe this is a user or Internet error but the website works fine so I don’t really see many other people saying that they have this issue so maybe it’s just me I don’t know lol

First: I can’t live without DN! The app? Just not ready for prime time. Every morning I click on is a mystery as to whether or not the audio version will load! If it doesn’t (30% of the time) I reluctantly try the video version. I’m reluctant to use it because then, you’re trapped unable to surf while listening. Even THEN, half of the time I’m in video view IT locks up mid-story and becomes impossible to watch without clicking PAUSE/PLAY over and over again. I’ll always TRY but if you guys could upgrade your process/technology/app, that would be awesome!! Posting this review from a point of love for DemocracyNow!!!

Love the content and the show, but this app needs some work. It freezes my phone when I simply to try to open it, and when it does eventually load everything operates really slowly. I hope they’ll improve it soon - I’ve been going to the website to watch the show which is less than ideal.

I am a sustainer for DN so I cannot say enough good things about their coverage of grassroots and social justice movements. I would like to know how to watch DN on my TV by mirroring from my IPhone. I just bought Chromecast from Google but it is not supported in this App. Thanks for any help.

Please fix the refresh on the headlines tab. I’ve had to stop using the app because I can’t access the mist recent headlines. This is a simple thing to fix (refresh typically loads random episodes from a week or two ago). I will gladly update my review if this is fixed. Other than this bug, Great streamlined app, exactly what I need and no useless/distracting features that I don’t.

I love Democracy Now!, but have over the years given input on its poor performance on my devices with no resolution. In particular it’s impact on other apps causes me to ensure it is not launched and often required that I reboot the phone. I get no response when I give feedback and have seen no improvement over a number of years. I would gladly help resolve these issues...

Excellent coverage of news that's hard to find elsewhere. App is a great way to stay caught up, especially if you can't watch/listen to the whole episode each day. Keep up the good work.

I watch the daily news show almost daily and I love that there is also an audio version and transcript. The app works great every time and is super easy to use. Now I just want one for my ipad!

DN is great but app is horrible! 1. Does not refresh date when re-opened /relaunched; 2. No refresh button (not even via home or menu); 3. If try to replay headlines it switches to full news (or even sometimes plays full news regardless of clicking headlines). Forget about this app. Stick with website-- much less frustrating.

Solid software, however the content is the real appeal. This non-profit NGO is an oasis in a vast desert of comercial "infotainment" media outlets. Courageous journalism and voices seldom heard in the "for profit" endeavors. Alternative, independent journalism at its best. More diverse and insightful than even NPR or PBS. Worthy of high praise and financial support.

This app started messing up about a year ago. It constantly breaks off in the middle of a segment and goes back to an earlier segment. You have to close the app and reopen it and cue it up again to the live show in order to keep on going. This means you miss whatever happened while you were restarting the app. Hey, Democracy Now! Get your act together and fix this app!

Love Democracy Now but this app design is a mess. It’s hard to scroll through an article, I generally give up mid way through and move on to other new sources. You’re loosing regular and new users with your poor design, hire a new developer. Beside that, long live Democracy Now!

In addition to providing one of the best independent news sources in the world, the iPhone app works great with the Voice Over Screen reader used by blind people who possess an iPhone. Good job DN! Ron from Buffalo, NY

I would love to use this app because I love DN News coverage and can't get this kind of information elsewhere, but I can't scroll normally. It freezes up and part of the screen may scroll, and it may work, but then it stops working again, so it all adds up to being unusable for me :(
