Exactly what I’m looking for to pass the N2

There might be a few kinks with some the automated translations /JLPT level tags, but the dev team seems pretty dedicated. It is quite impressive in the scope of what it does. This is exactly the sort of Japanese extensive reading app I’ve been looking for. I prefer to toggle the furigana off to practice my kanji and like how I can translate text / pull up readings on the fly. Love the vocabulary lists generated for the articles. Built in dictionary with grammar is a definite plus. Having access to the practice tests in the same app is just icing on top. One thing I would like to see is a few comprehension questions for the articles, but not sure how they could do that with the constant flow of new articles. Premium is definitely worth it. Get rid of the ads, get more tests / features, take it offline and on the go. Had some difficulty with the cross app login, but the support were quick to solve the issue. They’re friendly and care about their users.

Best Japanese Learnjng App EVER!

I can’t say enough good things about this app. It constantly amazes me. The team that put this app together has done a tremendous amount of work and continues to do so every day just for you. It might not be approachable if you are an outright beginner. But if you are a lower intermediate and above, then you can really make great use of the news articles. You can turn on and off the furigana to test yourself when reading kanji. All of the words can be looked up almost instantly. What is even better, is that you can add these words to your flashcard favourites and learn them in your own time. Not only that, but you can listen to the article after you’ve read it so that you can evaluate your listening comprehension. $50 for a lifetime membership is a steal!! Congratulations to the developer this app is amazing. I love what you are doing.

助かりました！

I started using this app and enjoyed reading articles, but then I noticed the JLPT button on the bottom. I was preparing to take N3 and decided to see what materials this app had to offer. I was blown away!! It was wonderful being able to take mock tests, review my answers, and try a different test. I was amazed at the consistency of my mistakes and successes, which I wouldn’t have noticed without this app. I was able to focus my studies on my trouble areas. The timer during the test was incredibly helpful, and I was thankful to have the audio portion as well. I recommend this app for anyone preparing to take the JLPT. I took the N3 yesterday and I’m feeling pretty good about it! We’ll see in a few months. :) I’m excited to see what else this app has to offer!

Great tool for learning to read Japanese!

I've been studying Japanese on and off for a while, and I've just recently decided to get serious about it. I downloaded Todai Easy Japanese without really thinking about it, and I'm so glad I did! This app offers so much, even without having to pay for the subscription (which is still only $25 for a forever sub with a few other options if you'd rather pay monthly). It allows you to read news articles with optional furigana, vocab look-up and study (with flashcards!), audio, local translations and even translating it yourself, etc. If you want to read real-world, everyday Japanese, this is the perfect app! I'm 100% going to be paying for the subscription!

This app is so amazing!! Not only does reading and translating the articles help with grammar and vocabulary, but you can take all the Japanese Proficiency tests and track your progress!! Only problem is, when I passed the first part of JPLT N5 and tried the “save image” option, the app crashed, so not I don’t have a photo of my score, nor can I look at the answers (T^T). Here’s my one suggestion: instead of making you retake the test, once completed, it should take you back to your most recent result, and offer an option to retake if desired. Thanks, keep up the good work!!

Very good, but...

This app is great, but the definition of an unknown word is pulled from Google Translate, I think. It’s not bad. However, there are better dictionaries, feature-wise, that I use for learning Japanese. When I use Easy Japanese app on my iPad Pro, the app does not allow me to pull up the dictionary app so that I use it side by side on ONE screen, instead of having to switch back and forth between screens, which is a bit annoying. I don’t know if it’s easy to change, but such update will be greatly appreciated. One final question before I finish I review: The “Print Article” button does not work on my phone or my iPad Pro. Anyone also experienced that? Thank you very much.

Confusing

As someone who has been trying to learn Japanese for a few months with no success, I feel like for people who barely knows Japanese, it’s going to be hard for them. For the easy section when you click on the news article, you can translate it and stuff but it is really hard to understand which part is which. I went on a news article and didn’t understand a thing so I decided to translate it, I don’t think that it is a good with beginner’s because it’s not in a learning progress way because you just expect us to know what part we are on and which is word is which. I’m sorry for assuming that’s what you think cause it really could not be what you think or maybe is. This is a great app, but I think that it is better for advanced people.

Great app for learning advanced Japanese

The app is usually really great, but in the new iOS 16 update, when you highlight a text, only about half the time does it give you the black box that you want. The other half of the time, what ends up happening is that the iOS default selection box does come up, and the black box is nowhere to be found. You cannot troubleshoot this by reselecting the span. Hope they fix it soon because this app is worth paying for

Bad account system & rude developer

My previous review wasn’t showing up after I updated it so I’m resubmitting it Judging by the rude response from the developer ("Hello, ITS THE NORMAL LOGIC, EMAIL IS UNIQUE, try another email then, and why you need delete then create the new one with same account?"), I will not be paying for this app or use it anymore. I deleted my account because you have no way to reset your progress in ANY of your apps. Maybe implement that? Don’t support creators who choose to be rude instead of communicating properly and improve their apps! Deeply disappointed. Original review: If you delete your account, you can’t make another one with the previous email. There’s also no option to update your email.

What I’ve been looking for!

I am a beginner at Japanese and I have been looking for reading material at my level. This app is exactly what I was looking for and so much more. Not only can you read, play audio, look up words and translate as you go, but you can also save new words, study flash cards and export your vocabulary lists to use elsewhere! There is also a section of more difficult reading materials but I will check that out once I reach a higher level. So happy a friend recommended this!

Great app for learning Japanese with minor issues

I really love this app. It's the best resource I've seen for turning real news into a learning resource with lots of integrations to make learning easier. One of my favorite things is the audio reading of the articles. However some articles I studied a few months ago no longer play (it just spins) and some of the voice choices seem to have been lost in a recent update.

Fantastic app! One recommendation

First I want to say thank you for building such a fantastic app! I use it every day in my studies to help with reading and listening. It’s great! One additional feature that I think would be a great help is if you could integrate Wanikani progress via their api to set which furigana are loaded. I believe someone has already made one for the website version on the computer, but if it could be integrated in the app it would be fantastic! Thanks again!

Awesome App for people who want to learn NATURAL Japanese!!

This app is fire , it offers so many lessons and the pictures really help a ton! It allows you to see the translation of Japanese words and the translation of kanji symbols!! I like that the videos refreshes everyday so you’ll always have new content to learn!! I’m honestly overwhelmed by this app and how good it is. Goodbye Rosetta Stone and Duolingo 🤩🤩🤩💪🏼 Edit: March 30, 2024 I love this app but do the 2 minute videos not work anymore ??

Impressed

Often times, I download an app and end up not using it, but this app has so many features that help me learn Japanese, and I feel encouraged to continue to learn. I've tried so many ways of immersing myself in the Japanese language including joining Japanese Discord servers, and all of them went no where. Now, I have finally found the app for me. Thanks for your creation :) I look forward to using it more in the future

Great To Read Articles!

I love the mix of serious, funny, financial, weather, and animal stories on this app! So refreshing after reading the news app in my iPhone in English! I love seeing all sides of what’s interesting around the world and practicing my Japanese. The options and word resources are great for instant help with translation. The length of the articles is perfect for a quick read. No time wasted on he-said-she-said political and celebrity crap.

最高

Still has a few bugs. The “back” button sometimes disappears, it crashed 1 time so far, and the text sometimes stays black when I switched to night mode. But for what it is, this app is AMAZING. I will probably end up paying for the subscription if these couple of bugs can be fixed. Developer, I know you’re doing hard work, I can’t wait to see where you take this app. Consider me a customer.

This has been unbelievably helpful in my quest to master this beautiful language. Living in the states and not having access to many sources of 日本語, neither spoken nor written, has been a great challenge. This wonderful app keeps me up to date on recent events, let’s me practice my reading, and even has an option to listen to a native speaker 🥰 definitely worth upgrading to pro, and definitely a 5 star app. Well done.

I was surprised

I don’t usually rate apps, but I had to give this 5 stars. I didn’t expect to find something that would work so perfectly for me, this is exactly what I was looking for when I was trying to find an app for reading Japanese articles. Not only does it have the ability to look up words really easily, it also has options to change the furigana depending on your level. Very good app 7/5.

Wow thank you

This is a really impressive app, and is a perfect companion for your Japanese studies. Not only does it find easy articles from sources like NHK, you can take practice JLPT tests here, use a dictionary, use flash cards for JLPT and also watch videos that are subbed perfectly. There are many more hidden features like different voices to audio play the article you’re reading etc. Really 5 stars 🎉

Not a review

Just needed to say the app is built well, with lots of ways to practice. But some of the flash cards have weird, sexual undertones for the images they use. For the work ‘to take off’ there’s the image of a model taking her top off- showing her bra/swim suit. Then there’s another stollen cover from a book/manga with heavy focus on a school girls breast (nipple poking though shirt). I don’t know what age range they’re going for with this app, but if this is supposed to be educational those images are completely inappropriate.

Must have app for learning Japanese.

This app covers just about everything you could want except for the actual learning the hiragana, katakana and kanji. And the kanji isn’t even really needed with the furigana option on. So you got reading material, video material, dictionary, it can read back news articles, quizzes. Again, must have app. I bought a lifetime license.

I reallllyyy like itttt

I’ve only been browsing the app for just 10 minutes and I already like it! I love that there’s so many vocab words and sentences to tap on. Meaning by “sentences to tap on” meaning I could look up words by the tap of a button . I like that there’s videos and news to watch. It’s honestly very helpful. Just make sure you know hiragana and katakana 😊!

This App is So Useful

You get real news from Japan, you can look up words as you read, listen, test your comprehension, look up grammar, all in the same app and with out moving from the article you are reading. PLUS everything else that the app offers! This is a really great study buddy, highly recommend

Payment Problem - resolved

Purchased Forever Premium, have tried logging out and in again several times, the upgrade isn't syncing even after deleting and downloading. Tried to pay again and was prompted to restore purchase. Still no updates.. Please help!! Edit: Seems it updated overnight, as I logged on and no more adverts! App seems alright 😎😎

I’ve never encountered an app so versatile in helping Japanese language learners of all ability groups improve their knowledge. The interface is wonderful and there are so many options for looking up things and saving things like articles and words for later. Truly helpful! If I never reach my full language potential it’s not for lack of resources!

Good content, not the best UX

Incredibly packed with a lot of content, such as vocab for N5-N1, sample tests, recent news articles, videos, etc. However, a lot of features feel unintuitive or lacking, making the app feel clunky. I was hoping to use and personalize my vocab list and flashcards for practice, but I’m unable to delete words from my vocab list, and flashcards can’t be randomized. Little things like this definitely make it harder to use to help me study vocab

Great for keeping up Japanese reading comprehension

Excellent source for short articles that allow you to see more commonly seen phrases and writing in modern day Japan. The videos with the subtitles are great...when they work. I have received the error message 90% of the time. Would like to see an update to resolve this. I think it might be an API issue. Edit: they fixed the videos!

Great app for Japanese learning

This is a great app if you want to learn Japanese. It is very comprehensive and well designed. It has a built in dictionary, which translates to your set language and audio to all the news articles many more. I wish it would support the share screen feature on iPad Pro so I can more easily learn while taking notes on another app.

Super useful learning tool

This is an excellent reading app if you’re not advanced enough to read something more exciting. It sorts by difficulty level so there’s something here for every level. My advice to other learners - do a small amount of flashcards at a time, then do a ton of reading with apps like this.

Perfect resource

I’ll keep this review short. I’ve been using this for a long time. It works great, displays popular news articles at an appropriate reading level, and the pop up dictionary works great for jp-eng and jp-jp. Premium isn’t expensive, and you still get great features without it. I like the jlpt tests that they offer.

Completely Disappointed with Recent Changes

This was my “go to” app for almost daily Japanese news reading practice. You used to get 10 free daily readings plus I didn’t have to sit through watching an ad. Today, I opened the app today and now I’m only allowed 3 free readings and I still had to sit through an ad to read my last one. If this is the direction the app is going then I’ll just delete it and get my news online for free. I’ve used this app for years so I’m completely disappointed in these changes.

Amazing app

This app has everything you could possibly want in a reader app. It also has a beautiful UI. The dictionary feature is also really nice because you can search for images and grammar points as well.

Great App, But...

Would really like more customization with the furigana. There should be a way to only show furigana for the JLPT categories you're not familiar with. I think the app is supposed to do this but the feature is broken. Also the widget does not seem to remember my furigana preferences. Otherwise the app is great but I have to give it 3 stars because with either all furigana or no furigana I can't actually learn anything from the articles.

Full of features

Can't believe how much there is to this app, honestly. I just wanted an app for finding news articles in simple-ish Japanese, but this one highlights and shows furigana, has audio transcriptions, etc. Just glad to have it.

Paid for premium but got nothing

Paid the $27 for premium unlock but nothing changed. Most likely will get a refund. Don’t recommend this app. Update: They answered and fixed the issue I was having.

JLPT Section Not Working

Before upgrade of the permanent premium, the JLPT section did not work. It says no data found and asked me to try again. However, even after the upgrade to permanent premium, the JLPT section still does not work. It keeps saying “no data found. You need to connect to the network and revisit...”. What can I do about it? Can the developer help? How to contact the customer service? Can I get a refund?

A few minor things

I really enjoy the vast capabilities of the app but for someone who needs to build vocabulary, tap to translate feature would be really helpful so I don’t have to stop the video to individually look up each word.

Bought this app a while ago to study Japanese before it was a subscription. It seems it’s moved onto a subscription service and for some reason I can’t restore my previous purchase and it’s forcing me me buy it again. I hate when devs do this and don’t honor previous purchases. Don’t buy this app.

Widget PLEASE!!!

I love this app. I paid for it so that I could support the developers. I don’t use it as often as I should but I’m aiming to change that. My biggest request is that we could get a full selection of widgets for the app. I’d love to be able to have daily articles on my Home Screen. The other news apps are pretty bad with language support so a widget for this app would be HUGE!! Please please please, look into this devs! And keep up the great work!

No offline mode

The app description suggests it can be used offline, but that’s not true, if you’re not connected to the internet you can’t use the app at all. Yes, you can download audio files to local storage, but that’s useless when the app doesn’t even open.

Great

It’s great, I like that everything is together in one app (news, dictionary, JLPT tests). My only complaint is that text gets cut off by the notch at the top of the phone while in horizontal mode, making it hard to read (iPhone XS max).
