So good! One suggestion…
This is a fun arcade style app that features so much games, you don’t get punished for picking the incorrect note, interval, chord, etc. rather it just shows your stats(that you can reset anytime) it really shows how much you’ve improved. I can easily get sucked into a round and find myself a thousand answers in! Time flys for me and it’s helped me learn to apply music theory to the guitar! Right now I’m working on the staff and fretboard game which is the closest thing to sight reading music notation. The one thing that I wish was implemented in the app was if there was accompanying videos to supplement it. Some of the games I had to surf the internet to connect the dots so I could actually understand how to play the game. Super awesome app and worth paying for the upgrades! I really hope that there will be more mini games added in the future… especially a few to help with sight reading measures of music and even sight reading chords on the staff! Download this right now if you’re serious about learning your stringed instrument!

Subscription Model
Why does an app like this require a subscription model? I was just playing around with the app. I wanted to learn scales and chords for the mandolin - and it appeared that this would be the best app to learn these music theory concepts, especially as it contains a variety of fretted string instruments, such as guitar, ukulele and mandolin - along with options for various number of strings of these instruments. It also has a layout where I can visually see the fretboard. So I am exploring the app and going to the scales and chords for mandolin - and I see that in order to unlock the other scales and chords, I have to buy Fretonomy Premium. So I go to the app, assuming that it will just be a one-time in-app purchase - or I could upgrade to the Pro version in the app store. Then, next thing you know, it gives me the option to subscribe for one month or the better value to subscribe for one year (33% off). What? I really cannot support this business model. I should be able to own the app and use it at any time after purchasing, without having to continue paying on a continuous basis. It is bad enough that most music educational places that give lessons require you to pay for the month up front, I cannot tolerate this model coming down to an accessory for learning music. This should be a purchase and be able to use for the life of your music education resource.

UPDATE (ALMOST THERE)
I had to update my last review since my previous concerns were addressed. Thank you for the fixes! The name that note layout is great, just like a piano keyboard. No more searching for notes. I really appreciate the response from the development team. Awesome! Thanks again. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I want to give this app 5 stars but I just can’t. Not until this one issue is resolved. When playing the “Name that note” game, the main notes are set up in order. That is of course expected. But when you tap the flat key or # if that’s your thing, the order of the notes above don’t make any sense. Why are they not set up in the same order as a piano? Ab should be above A, Bb above B etc.? Instead there are redundant notes, 2 B’s 2 E’s…. WTH! Fix this please! I shouldn’t have to search for the notes. How is that helping me study? If it’s set up like a piano, the visual representation will connect across both instruments and the intervals will be correct. Please fix!!

Great App! Worth the fees.
If you are becoming an intermediate guitarist who wants to learn more than a couple chords and the Pentatonic scale in one place on the fretboard , this app has everything you need to go to the next level. This app is complete and teaches the basic fundamentals of music theory and how to apply. 5/5. Memorization of the fretboard is key!! If you really want to learn how to play through songs and play more than just the easiest rock songs, you need this knowledge. If you practice every day and implement this app in your learning and practice, you will most definitely get the results. You will be a better Musician as well as being able to apply music theory applications to the guitar itself. I understand most people would rather pay a one time fee, I would too, but for what you’re getting, it’s absolutely fair and if you can’t do the yearly, download the app. you really can’t do much without paying but you can get a feel for the app. If you think it’s for you, 2.99 a month is pretty fair. I don’t know why everyone seems to think that this should just be free for everybody or not worthy as a subscription. Someone put a lot of time in this app; for what you’re getting, it’s pretty reasonable. Tell me a place you can get one 45-minute guitar lesson that’s cheaper than the price of this app. ✌️🤘🎸 ** I have nothing to do with the production of this app and I don’t know the owners or or the developers.**

Fantastic tool!
This is the first app review I’ve ever written, I just had to show my love. I downloaded this app 4 days ago, have put about 6 hours into it according to the stats, and I’ve got all natural notes up to the 12th fret pretty well memorized within a 1-2 second reaction time. If you break it up into chunks as you go and find little tricks to recall the notes, the app provides the random repetition needed to really commit it to memory. Having modes to both name the note shown, and find the note named, ensures you understand the fretboard both ways. The scale explorer has been helpful to find patterns, and I’m sure it will be way more helpful as I continue with the app. I haven’t found the chord game to be super useful honestly, but still the $2 purchase is paying off in spades. Well done, a must app for any guitar player.

Nearly perfect
Fret Trainer features a variety of exercises, and seems pretty easy to use. The sounds are pleasant, and the look and feel of the game is clean and straightforward. Comment about the navigation: I fiund it a little confusing, and got stuck a time or two early on. One thing I wish were different with Fret Trainer: in the “name the notes“ exercises, I wish that instead of asking players to identify the note on the fretboard as “B” or “F#”, that it would just display the note as it appears on the musical staff. To me, the names of the notes are in the way, and are less relevant somehow than the way they look in the score. If you read music, you already know the letter names if the notes. There is a musical staff exercise that does match to the letter names of the notes, but again, that seems less useful than matching those notes directly to the fretboard. Also, minor visual improvement for that exercise would be to display the ledger lines above and below the staff clearly, not grayed out; the lack of clear ledger lines is extremely distracting. I like the app, and I really like that it displays the fretboard from the guitarist’s point of view, not vertically or as seen as if looking straight at the instrument. Nearly perfect…if it allowed a setting to view notes as they really appear, instead of only by name, I’d give it two “p”s up!

What a Ripoff! - Updated
I paid the full price to get the full premium app with everything unlocked a few months ago. Since they’ve decided to go with a subscription model, I have lost access to all of the premium games and instruments I had paid for. Restoring purchases doesn’t get these back either. Feels like the developer has taken my money and given me nothing in return. Leaves a bad taste. UPDATE: I checked back in my purchase history and I did only purchase the guitar pack, and I do have access to that pack. Thank you to the developer for the quick follow-up, and my sincere apologies for the mistake.

Well Done!
I decided recently I want to learn all the notes of the fretboard and memorize as many chord shapes as I can and this is the perfect app to help me do it! Love the interface too, clean and easy to use. My only suggestion would be this. For both "name note" and "color match" the zoom feature is rather limited. It works well with a selection of 5 or so frets, though when I adjust my selection to frets 1-12 and put zoom on I am still shown 21 frets of the fretboard. If you could make the zoom focus in on the specific frets selected in settings that would be awesome. Other than that I'm very happy with the app!

Disappointed by Subscription Model
I used this app a couple of times in the past when it was called FretTester, and it was a great, free tool for learning the fretboard. However, I'm disappointed by the recent transition to a subscription model. The app's functionality hasn't significantly improved, yet it now requires a monthly fee. I won't support this irresponsible model, especially for apps that don't provide ongoing hardcore services. After all, my computer and my power bill are doing the heavy lifting for this app. I want to own my apps; I don't want to pay rent for things like my toilet, my door, my carpet. I'm willing to buy a pro version, but not pay rent. I won't be using it anymore due to this change and hope the developers reconsider their pricing approach for loyal users like me.

Huge value for the money
Before finding this app, my quest to memorize the fretboard consisted of: creating a bunch of fretboard diagrams, making a bunch of copies, then repeatedly filling in the notes, over and over and over. Lots of reasons why this wasn’t the best most efficient plan, honestly. For one thing, it became too easy to just fill in the gaps based on the notes I had already labeled, which was sort of cheating, but unavoidable. All that being said, this app is PERFECT. I made more progress in three days than the two months before I started with it. Really can’t say enough. Thanks so much for making this!

Hell of an app
I never write reviews but I figured this app was worth it. The entire interface is clean and simple to use. There are a variety of different game modes to choose from, each of which teaching you different important theory lessons. I’ve been playing for about 2 years now and have just started to really dive into learning how to play for sheet music fluently and also to expand my knowledge of music theory. This app has made it very easy for me to do so as I am quickly memorizing shapes and patterns on the fretboard. 5/5 stars. Very glad I found this! Well done!

One suggestion
I know all of my scales, and use this more so to help me look at the fretboard when arranging or reharmonizing charts if I don’t have my guitar handy. Especially if I’m on a train or plane or something like that. I’m not sure if this is a feature I just haven’t struck upon, but there should be a setting where all of the notes on the fretboard are just labeled and you don’t have to pick another scale in the scale explorer to find the chromatic notes. Or just put the chromatic scale in the scale explorer please. Thanks 🙏🏻

Decent, but needs work on displays
Updated review: The app was fixed so my major complaint about the staff & fretboard game being useless is no longer an issue. The display on the scale explorer still is very hard to see the fret numbers. I would now recommend this for folks who want to learn the fretboard. ——————— Old review: I was hoping to use this to learn the ukulele fret board, but it is disappointing. The staff and fretboard game only cares that you hit the correct note name on the fret - even if the note on the staff is an octave above, the game will count it correct if you just hit any note on the fret with the same name. So, I can’t really use it to learn to find the fingering on the fretboard that corresponds to the musical staff. The fretboard does show some numbers of frets, but they are often hidden by other images, so it’s hard to actually see the fret numbers - even though there is plenty of screen real estate above or below the fretboard. Perhaps the app works better for other instruments.

Best one I've found
I installed a bunch of these guitar scale, chord, etc type tool apps to try to find the best one before I bought one and I must say, I think this one is the best. 🌝 Thanks to the developer and great job! My only two cents is that it would be even better to have it as an option for the app rotated or not. That's it though, everything else is miles ahead of the other apps I've found and they even wanted monthly subscriptions! Thanks again to the developer for the one time payment option and everything. 👍

Lots of good stuff, but buggy
There’s so much interesting stuff in this app that I have to give it at least three stars for effort. However, the first thing I tried, the scale explorer, is not correct. I selected A Major Pentatonic and the app shows that the scale consists of the root, M2, M3, P4, and P5. It’s hard to want to learn from a source that isn’t correct. Hopefully, this is just an isolated issue. Edit: the developer acted quickly to fix the scale issue. The app really has a lot of good tools, so I’m changing my review. This app is well worth having.

Great app!
Overall a great app! I am using it to learn frets 6 through 12 on the bass. Two days into using it, I already feel more comfortable naming these notes. Still far from perfect, but definitely improving quickly thanks to this app. Definitely worth the $2 investment! My one (very small) complaint is that there isn’t an option to stop the same note from appearing more than once in a row. It’s a small annoyance, but it builds up with time and disrupts the flow of the exercise.

So great (one complaint)
This app is honestly the only thing that's made me legitimately start to learn the fretboard. The monthly cost is well worth it. My only gripe is a small bug where say I'm playing the "name note" game. Typically, when you touch a note, the note will sound out (this is an option). If I exit the app and then come back in the same session, the note no longer plays, and I need to close the app and restart it. Again, I love the app, but this really annoys me lol. If it's fixed it's an easy 6/5 stars.

Love this app! Really starting focusing on upping my guitar game recently and this app is an awesome way to study guitar & music theory while away from the real thing. The games are very fun and range from simple to very challenging based on your settings. I came across a bug that caused it to freeze & close in the ‘Name Chord’ game and let the developer know, he had it fixed in a couple days, so just hit that contact button if you happen to hit a speed bump. Again try this, I really appreciate this app. 🎸🎶

10 star app
This is such a deep app. I have learned so much from this already and I have seriously barley scratched the surface. I was absolutely hesitant about doing a subscription service, but this is so worth it. I am worth spending a tiny amount each month to learn theory and better myself at what I love doing and what I am lucky enough to get to do for a living. Thank you for this AMAZING app.

Banjo tuning wrong
So I wrote a previous review but can’t find it where I mentioned that the banjo tuning is wrong. I scrolled through some of the critical reviews and forum one from two years ago that mentions this and they just say that you can change the tuning to whatever you want so it’s not a problem. Sorry, I know you can change the tuning but as an app developer you should have the standard tunings and chords correct. The chords you have in the app make no sense. This app is poor andIm a bit mad that they could easily change the default tuning of the banjo but they take this attitude towards their product. Now im definitely not buying this.

By far the best fretboard app out there
I’ve tried many methods before but this app is truly great and makes learning easy and gives you a ton of control on how to approach mastering the note locations on the frets. You can learn it in chunks, with or without sharps, individual strings, etc. I installed a few fretboard apps but this one stood out. Stick with it and you’ll be surprised how great it is.

Very Helpful
Better than I expected. I’m using it for Guitar and it has exactly what I need to learn the fretboard in a fun and entertaining way. More than just the notes, the scales and chords are extremely helpful. The way this program is configured makes everything easy to understand and very user friendly. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to memorize the fretboard and learn scales and also chords.

Fantastic app!
I use FretTrainer when I have 5-10minutes to spare...at the bus stop, waiting for my girlfriend, microwaving a burrito, etc. I have found it very helpful for memorizing the fretboard. It is a strong complement to training with a guitar. One suggestion for improvement is to include the note sounds when you hit them (in the fret board memorizer, for example.) That would help with ear training too and would be very useful!

Useful app
I used another app to memorize the fretboard but somehow this one feels more fun and engaging. I’m not sure if it’s just my phone or if the app freezes every time I try to close it. Currently I’m using the free version and therefore I get some ads in the middle of the games. I’m going to pay for it as it’s very well deserved and hope the ads disappear, otherwise it could be annoying :-)

Great app with some recent bugs
I used to practice with this app religiously, but there have been some bugs recently that make it nearly unusable. The sharps and flats barely show up on the staff if at all, and the fretboard is so far zoomed out that I can barely tap the right fret. Hope these problems get fixed soon so I can get back to practicing with this otherwise very well-designed app:)

Great App!
This is a great app! I purchased the guitar pack. I almost know all the notes on the fretboard with just 1 day of using it! I have a problem with the sound though. I don’t hear any sounds when I pick a note. It also would be better if the “Staff and Fretboard” game went past 6 frets, but I still love this app though. I wish I could figure out how to get the sound working.

Maybe my favorite app ever
This is my first review ever, and this could quite possibly be my favorite app ever. I’ve played for decades and never mastered all the notes on a guitar fretboard. Now I finally have a simple and intuitive tool that is helping me achieve this goal. Add in the additional features I’m not quite ready for and it may go down as the most valuable 3 dollars I’ve spent as a guitar player.

Great app
What a great app. Learning the notes on the fingerboard has always been difficult for me. With this app, I can be sitting on a bus, an airplane, or anywhere and be able to memorize the locations of notes on the fingerboard as well as on the staff. You are able to focus on a particular range, say the 7 to 10 frets, and drill just on the area where you need improvement.

Great app! One suggestion
When you’re playing the name the note game, instead of just a consistent tone when you guess correctly could it play the actual note? I think this would also add some ear training into the experience. Otherwise I absolutely love this app and really appreciate all the constant updates. Great work!

one major flaw
Love the app. So much that I paid for the addons. Only to realize this app has one major flaw for which I’d advise any guitar player against it. I wish I could get my $ back. The fretboard is not oriented per your view as a guitarist. That is, on the app, the 12th fret is on your left. If you were fretting in real life, the 12th fret would be to your right hand side. I actually feel the confusion that training on this app and then on my guitar creates. Developers please fix this. It’s a simple counter clockwise 180 degree flip of the fretboard.

Ok as far as it goes
However, the name chord portion of the app never shows some triads and 7th chords that are easily fingered. Edit: The developer contacted me to ask what was missing. A version of the app containing the missing triads would easily earn a 5. By the way, the app sounds the notes when you select them, clean and clear enough to help with ear training.

A good app with needed improvements
The idea of this app is great, but I have one pretty big problem with it. When I use the fretboard and staff mode with bass, the notes on the staff are written an octave too high. If you fix this I will change my review to 5 stars, just please address this major issue. I started playing bass a few weeks ago, and I need to learn standard notation by the next school year to play bass in jazz band. Please fix this issue, and the app will be a great tool.

Ideal addition to guitar position playing
I am learning to play finger positions up and down the fretboard. This app is a perfect addition to my regular guitar exercises. When not playing the guitar, I use the app to reinforce what I learned. It also has a feature to learn reading notes on the staff, and, since I play Left handed guitar, the app lets you change the fretboard for lefties. Awesome.

WHY?
Unfortunately this app turns off any other audio that might be playing when in use. It would be nice to have the ability to change a setting so it wouldn’t do that, even if it meant not being able to hear the notes or chords within the app at times. Sometimes I like to study and memorize the physical layout of such things as fretboards while listening to an audiobook, but can’t with this app.

Note buttons illogical
I feel like the note buttons (and their sharps/flats) should be arranged chromatically onscreen. From what I can see, reading the note buttons from left to right shows Bb, A, B, B, Db, C, etc. Why not Bb, B, C, Db like a piano keyboard? Better yet, how about a piano keyboard with optional labels? Also, would be nice if the app could be used in portrait mode (for one handed use) but I understand that would probably be a larger undertaking. Great app otherwise! Thanks!

I had access to this app for a month or so after I purchased an annual subscription, but now the app has shut me out and keeps asking for a monthly or annual purchase to play. I’ve requested a refund from Apple, but I’m not optimistic because of the time that has passed. So the annual purchase, at least, appears to be a rip-off. Great tool; A few wishlist features
One of the only trainers I can find that not only looks clean but lets me practice fretboard to sheet notes directly. A few things that I would love to see to make my life a bit easier: - Support for fixed-do solfege syllables instead of letters - Simultaneous training for sharps and flats - Option to hide my note timings, can be distracting - Option to hide the clef - Support for grand staff instead of just one clef or the other - Splitscreen support would be nice! Thanks for the tool. Very useful.

The strings are in the wrong place
I was using the Ukulele Baritone which the strings are D G B E and if you look at your instrument the D sting is close to your head and the E string is closest to the floor. In the App this is reversed. This needs to be changed or it going to confuse people when they hold their Ukulele to play. I was impressed that it did have the Baritone D G B E chose because most only show the Tenner or concert string layout of G C E A only.
