Great for travelers
I was first told about this app by someone who works in tourism in a city where it is often difficult to locate vegan and vegetarian options and said that her vegan and vegetarian guests use it to great success. Since then I’ve used it so much when traveling and also sometimes to find places in my own city that I hadn’t previously known about. I’m perplexed that the second most helpful review on here is a 5-year-old review telling people to just use Google Maps as I am traveling presently and today thanks to this app I visited a takeaway/takeout veg place that isn’t even listed on Google Maps. The only thing that personally frustrates me about the app is what many other reviewers have mentioned, that it would be great if it were clearer in the app that only veg places can get five stars and only non-veg places can get one star, as I personally only found that out by reading reviews within the app where people said they would give X stars if they were allowed by the app. However it is a great app regardless.

Just use Google, honestly it’s way better
In response to Happy Cow’s response: You suggest “lowering your standards” and adding establishments that only offer “a few” vegan friendly options - excuse me but I thought the purpose of this app was to guide us vegans to restaurants that have vegan friendly options, even if it’s only “a few.” Maybe I misunderstood the premise of this app? I don’t think so. And I tried adding the place we ate at in Ely, NV and the website made me feel like it wasn’t appropriate to add it so I didn’t. Stupid questions like “are you SURE they have more than a few vegan options?” No, I’m not sure but I’d still like other vegans to know they can get a pizza there if they’d like. Google can do that, too. Google all the way. (Original review:)This used to be a great and helpful app for finding vegan food nearby - when I was in Seattle. Now, not so much. A month ago I went on the road and was fully expecting this app to help guide me to vegan friendly establishments. That has not been the case. For example, I’m sitting in Ely, Nevada right now and when I search in Happy Cow one restaurant pops up and it’s closed. However, when I search in google I found a pizza joint, a Mexican restaurant and a couple other places that offer vegan friendly options. I was borderline angry when I discovered that because I paid for this stupid app. I’m on the road 100% of the time and I’d suggest just using google and not waste your money on this app.

Best Search Tool for Vegan places
It’s easy to be mislead by ads or SEO’s that some restaurants have and then when you check them they barely have more than one vegan option in their menus (when they have any). Also, to be honest, most of us vegans prefer to be patrons of restaurants 100% vegan, and thats what makes HAPPY COW app vegan’s best friend. It’s worth it the small fee that actually supports the app development and is more than worth it to have it available for any time you decide to explore new cities and new vegan food places worldwide. Yes, the collective contribution to add as much information about vegan places is real. The beauty of the app is also that it takes in consideration the differences between restaurants with vegan or vegetarian offers, restaurants that are vegan and vegetarian friendly and the ones that are 100% vegan that very often accommodate people that are also gluten-free, soy free, etc. I’m happy that I’ve been using it for a year now and I’ll keep using it because it rocks !!!

Best resource for finding veg-friendly restaurants
Someone recommended this to me when I first went vegan a few years back. It had been less than a month and I was just starting to feel that I wouldn’t be able to do it because I missed eating out with the family. We met this guy in front of the one vegan restaurant I managed to find by just trying to Google a bunch of stuff and when I told him what I went through, he told me about the app and I have been an avid user since! I have used it to plan trips because you can save an itinerary of places you want to visit beforehand and it’s really easy to add restaurants that you may find on your own. If you use the app I encourage you to leave reviews and add restaurants because that’s how the information grows. It is definitely worth the download! *As of Aug 2018, the app has been redesigned and looks great! The ability to filter by restaurant type directly from the main page is a welcome new addition!

A must have for any vegan/vegetarian.
Upon going vegan I chose not to purchase this app due to the higher than average price, but since then I have had many great meals thanks to this app which makes it well worth the cost. The app has some issues that need to be worked upon and the kind developer team has informed me that they are aware of them and are doing their best to integrate them. I recommend this app to anyone who is traveling or living in a metropolitan area where there may be vegan/vegetarian restaurants unknown to them. For those who reside in the suburbs and don’t travel I recommend you use the free website to see what types of options there are around you at one time. I wish there were vegan/veg restaurants everywhere but that is not always the case so check the website first. I hope that the happy cow community grows because for now I use happy cow to locate the restaurant but google to see the reviews and photos. If a rest isn’t on happy cow has a large number of positive reviews and photos it’s bound to be a home run of a a meal.

Helpful Tool
- Appreciate the sorting options. Made it a lot less hard to identify vegetarian options. Appreciate most the ability to remove chain restaurants on top of all the sorting options. - Would prefer a more minimalist app icon on my screen to the cartoon cow drawn in that specific children’s show style. Doesn’t look great mashed up against other app icons. Not relevant to app function though, just means I relegate the app to a back page. - Regarding the common complaint I’m reading about 5 stars not being permitted for non vegan restaurants and vegan restaurants not being permitted 1 star - you could simply asterisk it by color-coding the 5th or 1st star outside your preferred system. More information is better for consumers. I want to know if a vegan restaurant is garbage but works for emergencies, cause I’d rather give my money to the legitimate 2 star vegan restaurant over the 1 star if given choice. They’re more deserving.

Great tool for vegan gastronomes
My wife and I travel a lot for business. As vegans we really appreciate the recent surge in plant-based food options available at nearly every restaurant. When we travel we use this app allows to quickly find what vegan food is available nearby. We particularly like to find and support restaurants that have committed to be 100% plant-based, especially those that are “best of class”. We love finding gourmet vegan both in the high end restaurant and those surprises at some walk-ups and cafes. We often share these findings with our non-vegan friends who enjoy great food that happens to be plant-based. Sometimes a google search will find places that are not listed in HappyCow yet but I think the is a sign of how quickly this genre of food is growing. The HappyCow community does a great job of catching these and then updating the database.

Amazing for vegans & vegitarians Works Globally
I used this app to locate vegan food places all over the world. From when I am just going out to find local vegan locations to planning my vacations to preview the areas with vegan options. There is also a setting in search that helps you find natural stores. I can’t even begin to tell you how this app has saved me again and again. As a vegan you often try to pre plan but every so often you get caught in a situation where you need to eat something and have no idea where there is a vegan place to eat. This is a must have for any vegan or vegetarian. This app allows you to essentially be empowered to always plan out even your vacations search food places save them as a destination so you can visit the ones interested when you arrive. This is why I have given it 5 stars. It is the best app ever. 😀

perfect app
As a strict lacto-vegetarian for many years (the most common type of vegetarian diet globally), I have been using HappyCow for several years and always find it brilliant. I have used it on both coasts, the Midwest and Texas, Hawaii, Australia and extensively in various regions of Japan rural and urban and it has saved me many a time. Some places have no/few vegetarian places, that is a great heads up too (just a reality, not the app’s fault). Of course we can use common sense and search engines and expand the search in those cases. I feel the app and developers perfectly prioritize strictly vegetarian/vegan places while also noting great options in places that also serve meat. I agree with five stars as a set-aside for strictly vegetarian/vegan places, as the app is meant for those seeking to eat vegetarian/vegan. This app is wonderful seva (service), please continue.

This app is amazing worldwide
I live in Los Angeles but love to travel and had to travel for work. From New York to little towns around the U.S. to Iceland to Amsterdam to England, HappyCow has been invaluable. My boyfriend and I are vegan and even locally HappyCow has introduced me to places that I never knew of, and probably would never know of but for them. We have discovered so many little gems through HappyCow. The app has been super easy to use, you literally just put in your location and then actual reviews and photos from actual patrons come up. I love adding restaurants that I discover. Anyhow, thought they deserve a shout out because they have surpassed every other app and platform that I have used to try to find places to eat around the world.

Only worth it if free
As a vegan I like supporting vegan products, but this app is not worth even $.99... the selection is poor and only limited to places that are 100% vegan. I want to find places I can eat and don’t want to be controlled by the developer’s filtered choices. Many restaurant in my area that are vegan friendly, but only like 7-8 within 25-30 mile radios (I live in the currently 4th largest metropolis area of US). I went to find by the map and when used the selected area, the map zoomed in (glitch) and gives me the result just for small selection. I hate the fact that I can’t get my money back!! I paid $3.99 thinking it was a good app as I usually get if I pay more than $1... can’t believe that Peta recommended this app. Do not purchase until they improve their database and bugs. I see plenty of options in TripAdvisor and Yelp in my area. This app is only worth if it is free at the moment, and even then TripAdvisor or Yelp provides more options and includes vegan friendly places. Btw - not supporting restaurants that are vegan friendly and offer 100% vegan options in their menu without having to modify the order, is not supporting restaurants management that are being open minded and value our life style. Also it makes our cause easier when you can share with non-vegans without having to inconvenience anyone. The more people order the offered options, the larger will be the vegan menu. Then, demand will grow when the options are available (more vegans).

Extremely useful - Suggestion
Happycow is certainly better than google for finding vegan restaurants. Much more straightforward search results. If I may offer a suggestion, since so many vegans are using this more than any other vegan-related app, I think it would be great to have a meetup feature for vegans. With the way Happycow sets up profiles I think it’s already in a great position to add a meetup feature. An option to host or join groups and events that may occur at veg restaurants, festivals, or even parks and hikes. One of the biggest struggles in the vegan community is finding other vegans and we are all isolated from each other. I think given how popular Happycow is on vegan forums it can have a huge impact

Good idea, poor execution
I was very excited to get this app. I live in the middle of the Midwest in a college town, and didn’t know if there were any vegan options near me. Looking at the list on the app, I was pleased to see quite a few options, and I had hope. But as I started making plans with friends and them asking the age old question of “can you eat here?” I found the app almost no help. So many restaurants in my area have vegan options or are vegan friendly, but aren’t listed in the search results. I tried to add one of them, and was discouraged by how big of a pain it is to add a place. I’m all for being thorough when listing restaurants, but you have to add every single menu item that is or could be made vegan, as well as answer way too many questions about willingness to accommodate. All of this is to say that I paid for an app I don’t use because the list of vegan restaurants is outdated. Pretty disappointed.

Great app!
This is a great app to find vegan restaurants. I hear people complain about this app tho saying it does not have much and would rather use other apps. Well they do name streets after people like them. ONE WAY>>> Places don’t magical appear on Happy Cow. The users need to help out by adding places and pictures. BTW, how do you think places show up on other sites? HC has made it easier in the last couple years. Yeah, they have a couple stupid pop ups asking if a place serves animal products, then asks again, are you sure. It’s annoying but if your serious about adding a place just go with it. I’ve used this app all over the world and found some great restaurants. I also add places all the time.

26 year vegan use this app all over the world
I’m a 26 year vegan / 15 year raw vegan and lifetime performing artist who tours all over the world and this app is everything. I’ve used it in Spain, Japan, Thailand, Switzerland, Italy, Costa Rica and so much more. I’ve certainly used it in all 50 states. And surprisingly, I use it regularly in my home city, Los Angeles, the world mecca of vegan food just to see what new places pop up. They show up on Happy Cow first. Of course the app is only as good as its community reviews, so I always try to upload a photo and short review where I go - especially if it’s a small town. It’s easy to use and through the photos and reviews, you can really tell what a place is going to be like before you make the trek there. Support!

Phenomenal resource for veg-friendly options
I was initially hesitant to purchase this app due to it not being free (I’m cheap when it comes to app purchasing), but upon downloading it, I could not be happier. Especially when visiting new and unfamiliar locations, I have used this app to find restaurants able to accommodate my dietary choices. Secondly, I really appreciate the ability to add reviews to the locations – both pros and cons – and the ease of adding photographs of the restaurants. (Venue is important!) Third, I admit that I was annoyed when I noticed that multiple restaurants offering veg options were not listed on the HappyCow app; however, I decided that I could change that by adding them myself. Since then, I have found this app the greatest resource for me because it engenders and cultivates a community who is collectively trying to make eating veg an easier and more delightful experience. Lastly, I’m extremely thankful for this app and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to try veg, already veg, or simply interested in seeing veg options throughout their area.

Not really a restaurant.
This place looks as if it is barely hanging onto life. Without a doubt, one has to be committed to eating there as it is extremely difficult to find. In an almost totally vacant shopping center it is only one of a few occupied stores. The food is expensive for vegan (and yes I’m vegan) but isn’t adequately outstanding to warrant the prices. It seems that the place is held together by one employee. As you enter the restaurant there is a podium where you place your order and then you wait outside if you like but no indoor seating and only a couple of tables outside. While you wait the person who took your order disappears, probably to microwave the food order, and then returns to deliver or serve the food. My recommendation is give it a miss and look elsewhere.

I really wanted to like this, I really did
I live in a town with an amazing food culture, and tons of veggie friendly businesses. Even with these elements, HappyCow is inconvenient at best. There is a breakdown of dietary levels and some great reviews, but you have to go to a different section “filter” to refine a search If you are in the mood for a certain place, you have to take additional steps to find it, unfortunately, competitors like Yelp work better for my family, (which I don’t necessarily like, but reliability and functionality is key for an app for us). Recently, Happy Cow reached out to me for feedback, and I attempted to give some constructive feedback to help make the tool better. I received back an email basically stating, “well you are just doing it wrong”. Yeah I do agree, I was probably doing it wrong. However, if in this day and age, someone interacts with your app and has trouble using it, then perhaps there may be room for improvement. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to figure out how to use every app I use, so my default is to not use those apps that seem abstract. I really want to support Happy Cow, it just is more trouble than it is worth for me. Hopefully they are able to address their limitations objectively, as I am appreciative of their mission.

This app was a lifesaver in Italy!
We just returned from a 10 day tour in Italy and this app was a lifesaver!! We were able to search out vegan restaurants in Rome, Tuscany and Venice!! We ate like kings and everything was so easy to find! Thank goddess for this app! In the land of dried meats oil and cheeses we found fresh and savory selections in every town we visited! This app was so worth the price! We use it all the time!! Thank you Happy Cow! My only request/feedback is that you add “Whole Food Plant Based” or “WFPB” as one of your dietary label choices, pretty please🙏🏻 I’ve selected Herbivore but would appreciate the correct title to be available for those who are WFPB, which many are for health reasons.

Cool concept but..
There are tons of places with vegan options around me that are not on the app. The app is showing me that I live in a dead zone for vegan options, which is kind of true but the app is still missing a lot. Edit: I appreciate the developer response, but it seems like this app is not what I was looking for. It seems like it is not geared towards those of us who are having difficulty finding restaurants with ANY vegan options, but instead for people who are surrounded by vegan and vegetarian restaurants and just need help choosing which one. Disappointing, because I am aware of the one all-vegan restaurant in my town, but I wouldn’t necessarily know which places would have a vegan item or two on their menu. It seems this app would be helpful if you lived in a large, vegan-friendly city. Edit 2: after reading the other reviews, it looks like they’re no longer allowing submissions for restaurants that serve meat? That would explain why nothing was coming up for me. If this is true, that completely erases the functionality of the app in my mind. Not all of us have the luxury of getting to eat at all vegan and vegetarian restaurants! Sad.

Excellent Investment
The convenience is priceless! As in, it’s worth a LOT more money than is charged, just to find exclusively vegan dining establishments—and they also list so much more, even farmers’ markets. I recall my last pre-vegan roommate asking me get “heartburn” pills for him, which he took nearly every day; they were expensive. For anyone regularly taking antacids because of meat eating, I’d highly suggest buying the app to find all-vegan restaurants once in a while—you can go in, order anything on the menu, and probably not need to take any pills! There are so many reviews to help you choose, especially by vegans.... Get out and live a little!

Decent app, needs bug fixes
This app is great for what it does, although as another reviewed posted 4 years ago, it’s better in some ways to “just use google” since the data is so much more updated and robust (very unfortunately, since google is a horrible company). I could describe other bugs but most prominently I wanted to ask the developers to please allow the app to display in Landscape (horizontal) mode on iPads! It is very irritating to have to use the app only in vertical portrait mode, especially when using an attached keyboard to type such as I’m doing now. Further, the map when zooming in and out and clicking “search this area” is very buggy too, it often zooms out again so it’s like playing back and forth tug of war, this applies to the iOS HappyCow app as well as this one on the iPad. Thank you, despite the above requests/criticisms I appreciate the app, and hope you can keep improving it, it still needs a lot of work to be viable as an option / alternative to Google in many ways. I will keep using it when I can, since I appreciate its potential…

Don’t leave home without it!
I’ve never felt strongly enough about an app before to bother rating it. We rely on this wherever we go - even in Europe. I love the “veg options” feature because we have a vegan, a lacto-ovo and two omnivores who prefer meat. So we’re able to find places fit for everyone. We use the app to plan our sightseeing schedule so we’re close to something good at mealtime. Options include grocery stores, so whether we’re with family in Frankfurt or AirBNB in the middle of nowhere New Hampshire, we know where to go. Love that you can see what’s open and easily click for directions.

Offends me, as a vegan
I’ve been wondering why this app shows so few restaurants w vegan options near me, when I know that they exist. Then today I tried to add a review to a great place w vegan options. The app PREVENTED me from giving the restaurant five stars(!), saying that rating is reserved for fully vegan restaurants. This is the kind of judgemental/paternalistic nonsense that gives us vegans a bad name. And it’s counterproductive. I guarantee that Happy Cow’s obscure rating rules have zero effect on the incentives of a non-veg restaurant to become mostly or fully veg. Such restaurants don’t even know that HC exists. But the rules do disincentivize adding options to HC that actual vegans (me) would find helpful. As it is, I find a lot more options by searching in Yelp for the word “vegan” in the reviews.

Helpful but rating system is misleading
You can only give dedicated vegan restaurants five stars. I think this is misleading. We had an unforgettable meal at a restaurant that also serves animal products. The cover of the menu advertised vegan options, which were extensive. The staff was knowledgeable. And we were able to eat outside with our dogs. I would hate to discourage vegans from patronizing such establishments if they only see four stars. We need to bring these restaurants our business so they continue to see the benefit of catering to vegan diners. Especially when they’re in small towns with few options.

Missing features
It’s nice to get a social side of plant-forward diets, and the following for the app has really made it a great resource for finding those places. * Update based on developer’s second response: I appreciate your time to explain the intention behind the app. I think that others could benefit by understanding that you want to highlight places that are *purposely* providing plant-based options. I recommend you put that in the app’s description. As it stands, it seems like you’re trying to advertise your service as a yelp-for-vegans; which is why I was confused.

Great for road warriors but.. search is poor
Unfortunately I have downgraded to 3 stars for poor search workflow. You cannot search for a specific restaurant or restaurant type within a city. You can only search for a NAME or a CITY. You can’t search for Ramen in Paris. There’s only one search field. Another user already reported this and the developer’s response was clueless. I guess since it was sold the new developer’s don’t get it. The app needs TWO SEARCH FIELDS 1. Location 2. Name I’m pretty sure there was a NAME buried in the filters previously. Bring it back. Prior review: I haves used this app around the world to discover great restaurants often in walking distance. Truly awesome. One tip: call ahead to verify a restaurant is open or still operating. Restaurants change their hours often and there’s a lot of turnover in the business. If you do find info is out of date, take the time to update in the app or on the website. And unlike a lot of apps, it is actively developed with frequent updates by a developer that takes feedback well.

Needs improvement!
Ok I get how valuable this information is catering to vegan / vegetarians. The problem is if I’m paying $3.99, I expect the data to be reliable. The price point is not the issue but the fact that the end result is the opposite of the value I expect out of it. My girlfriend is vegan and I bought the app to use in Paris and, no exaggeration, three places in half a day were closed or had no vegan food left. I also noticed places that had some options that aren’t listed. That said, I think they should reconsider making this app free so people can share the info that improves the data quality being offered. At some point, going around is time consuming, exhausting, and expensive. I’d like for you to succeed but you need to make some changes pronto.

I tried this app a while ago, and I didn’t like it too much because there were a few issues with it at the time. But, I recently went vegan and had a hard time finding places that would suit my diet. Luckily, I decided to give this app a second chance, and I’m glad I did! Every issue has been fixed, and I love it now! I don’t travel much, but it has helped me find new places to eat in a town that I thought I knew like the back of my hand. When I do travel, the first thing I check is my app to see where I can eat- it’s a lifesaver!

Plant Based No-Oil options
The happy cow app has been very helpful to my wife and I under our new lifestyle of plant-based know oil living. We are wondering if you could add a feature or filter for establishments that are willing to serve a plant-based know oil option. Very difficult to find places that have it on the menu. We recently found a great one near JFK Airport in New York City thanks to your app. We were disappointed that there is no way to identify such accommodating establishments with your app. The numbers behind Dr. Collin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn continue to grow exponentially. We hope you can serve this growing group of followers with your wonderful app.

App doesn’t solve problem of no vegan restaurants
The premise of this app is good but having an app to find vegan restaurants doesn’t magically make them appear. When I first installed it it came back with nothing, so I went in to “filters” and increased the search radius to 50 miles and then one restaurant is listed. So if I drive for over an hour I can get breakfast or lunch (they don’t serve dinner...) We don’t need apps so much as we need vegan restaurants! I would say save your $3.99 and use Yelp, but Yelp lists places as vegan that aren’t.

Best app for vegan and vegetarian travelers!!
My husband and I love this app!! We love to travel around the world and every place we go there are vegan options for us thanks to HappyCow.. we use this app and TripAdvisor to strategically find hotels close to vegan restaurants... I also found one time a vegan bed and breakfast in the FL Keys and I took my husband there for birthday ... I don't compare this app to yelp because in Yelp I don't trust if the place is complete vegan or not.. maybe it's me, but happy cow was created with a different mission compared to Yelp.. hope this review helps! Totally worth the $4!!

BEST VEGAN RESOURCE EVER
I have been using this app ever since I went vegan three years ago. It shows you all the vegan-friendly restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores in an area. Whenever I go on a trip, I use this app to find vegan food places, and it has been indispensable for locating AMAZING places. I have never had a poor experience at any of the many places I’ve visited thanks to this app. Not all of the places are strictly vegan, but that’s ok, because they still have vegan options. Also, the profiles of the places tell you if it’s “vegetarian,” “vegan,” or “veg-friendly.”

Indispensable app for any vegan / veg
I rarely write app reviews but this app has truly been a life saver countless times on countless trips. Whenever I am in a new city, country or continent HappyCow is among my most used apps. It saves you a tremendous amount of time by locating nearby restaurants, shop, grocers and many other categories that cater to vegans or vegetarians. Then, each place you find has honest, trustworthy reviews from other vegans. Not like Yelp reviews, where they are completely untrustworthy. This app is WELL worth it’s small asking price. Thank you HappyCow!

Inaccurate ratings
Will change to a higher rating if they allow me to rate vegan restaurants with 1 star and non vegan restaurants as 5 star. It is not entirely accurate the quality of restaurants if they are already biased based on if they are fully vegan or not. I have been to restaurants with incredible food and staff that have a couple of non vegan options that are labeled and I have been to terrible vegan restaurants in terms of quality and staff that deserve 1 star but the app won’t let me truly rate them due to being fully vegan or not. The labels already let us know if it is a fully vegan restaurant or not that we do not need to give incorrect star amounts to try to boost vegan restaurants and decrease non vegan restaurants with vegan options.

Love this app.
Being vegan can be challenging when eating out but this app helps so much. Delighted to find even when I am visiting China it’s still offering suggestions. I guess it’s only as good as the people who use it so I must remember to keep adding and making reviews as we all should do. It’s what its all about helping each other along . I tell all my vegan and none vegan friends about this, times are changing and it’s amazing people who aren’t vegan will know someone who is so keep spreading the world about this app it’s such a brilliant app.

Lifesaver
I was born and raised a strict vegetarian and I travel a lot for work. I’ve been using happy cow for 10 years now, and this app has changed my life. I used to go overseas (Korea/Japan/China) and was completely lost when it came to finding food. I’d be lucky to go on a trip and have some bread and water to eat. Happycow has literally changed my life. Now I can go alllllmosssst anywhere and be able to find a great meal. I don’t think I’ve been to a city in the last 4 years where happycow didn’t have listings. This is awesome.

Great resource with dumb rating rules
I love having the resource but the rating system is bad. If a place isn’t fully vegan it can only get a 4 star. Why punish people for trying? If a place is fully vegan, it has to get a two star minimum. I had the worst meal of my life and couldn’t give it one star. This leads to misrepresented ratings and bad experiences. A better practice would be to allow people to rating places fairly and add a gold cow or something for full vegan places that you can filter on if you so desire. These places can even show up first by default in the sorting. Overall a good resource with bad rules.

Best Food App if You Travel!
I was a little deterred by the $4 cost for an app, but it was more than worth it to plan my Japan trip!! I’m so floored by how amazing this app is and it’ll also help me find places around town easier as well. My only complaint is that it seems to have recently changed from a 4-star max rating to 5-star (?), so all the reviews I’m seeing for food in Tokyo mention something along the lines of “I wish there were more than 4 stars to give”, so I feel like ratings should be adjusted.

Fed in Europe
Finding vegan food while traveling through Europe was a struggle until I found happy cow! I knew of it from the states, I’d been to a vegan food festival and got handed a little sticker. Navigating vegan food in LA is a breeze but Europe was a challenge. I had pasta and red sauce every day until I reinstalled my happy cow and was thrilled to find all these ultra hip, healthy and yummy vegan restaurants that had been right under my nose! Can’t recommend this enough, do not get stuck eating pasta every meal!

Favorite App
This app has been a savior for me when traveling. It gives me recommendations of vegan-friendly places that I would not have known of otherwise, based on my location. It has made it much easier for me to find places that cater to me, taking the pressure of me when I’m a new place. I even use it in my hometown to see what new restaurants have popped up. MUCH more effective than google-searching for places and definitely more reliable. I can’t explain how much I value this app.

Excellent for finding vegan options easily
Comes up and tells you if it’s open or if it’s opening soon so you know which ones might be opening within 30 minutes to an hour. If it’s restaurants are not familiar with you might still have to contact during Covid to make sure whether or not they have dine in or only delivery or take out options. But it gives a lot of options so I use it a lot. Love it!!!

Disappointing
I really need an app that will help me find safe food when I travel. I had hoped this was it. Not so much. The listings are limited. And when I went to post a couple reviews, I found out why. The app is really poorly designed and hard to navigate. They require that places reviewed have several vegan options on the menu. I was trying to post a place in an airport that had a fabulous vegan salad. Not easy to find good airport food, so. Was thrilled and wanted to share! The other place I managed to review, and I’m not sure will be approved, was a warning to vegan/gf eaters to avoid. The posting process is extremely cumbersome. I’m closing my account and heading back over to Yelp.

Amazing
I just moved to a new state and it’s hard finding new places to eat at. This App shows you all of the vegan, or vegetarian options nearby. Users review the restaurants so you really get an idea of what your getting into. I can’t thank the developers enough. This is the best app for those with dietary restrictions. I used to spend way too much time searching for information online I know it’s looking convenient spot and it saves me so much time!

Best travel buddy... home and abroad
I love to travel. I LOVE that no matter where I go, happy cow is reliable in helping me track down vegan options. I travel 3-4 days a week and I’ve found the best restaurants in the middle of nowhere. The reviews are honest and done by actual vegans and vegetarians, not just someone guessing what veg people might eat. Sorting by open now and distance makes this app really versatile. Happy it’s been around as long as it has, and the reviews and options continue to grow with it.

Lackluster Experience So Far
I love vegan for so many reasons. My top three being compassion, my health, and the environmental impact. This app is great for finding finding strictly vegan restaurants. It’s usefulness diminishes as you move towards more inclusive options. For instance, in Reno there is a breakfast place called Two Chicks that has an amazing vegan skillet and delicious vegan pancakes, but many meat options too. They don’t make the list. The app doesn’t allow you to search for a particular restaurant. I’d also like to sort by meal (breakfast, lunch, Italian, Mexican, etc.). Lastly, you cannot rate a restaurant five stars if they aren’t strictly vegan. They have a category for “veg-options”, why not allow me to give a place with veg options five stars? Seems discriminate. I hope the app continues to develop, and I’m happy to contribute my $4 to the cause, but at this time I do not recommend it as a one stop shop to find vegan food in your area. I still find yelp and google more useful.

Best App 4 Vegan & Vegetarians
I’ve been a vegetarian my whole life and found this app about 10 years ago. It is the absolute best app. I use it whenever I travel to find the best vegan restaurants. I’m on my second year of becoming vegan and this app helped me transition. I’ve loved almost every place I’ve tried. This community has great taste in restaurants and pretty much only post 4 and 5 star restaurants. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to eat healthier!

Better to use website as app missing listings
I have used website for years. Finally decided to buy app. First time using it, shows no listings for small town I was about to visit. Online website shows four listings. Double checked spelling, etc several times. Reported issue to customer service and they never responded after several days. Wrote to facebook page and was told I couldn’t complain on there. As such, I wish I could get refund for app as website works great. At least it’s supports a good cause, but they should respond to customers pointing out a significant glitch.

A Must-Buy For Vegans
Dining out was a lot easier when I was vegetarian but now that I’m vegan it’s simply too time-consuming to sift through Yelp and Google reviews to figure out 1. If a restaurant actually serves any vegan dishes and 2. how good those vegan dishes are. You know on Happy Cow that the reviews are by fellow vegans and vegetarians so they more accurately predict the experience as opposed to restaurants receiving many five star ratings for their steak and other animal flesh based dishes, while their veg options are just afterthoughts.

*****APP OF THE YEAR*****
I travel LOTSSSSS for the government. Finding food around the county and world was hard. Most days I would either starve or eat very little because there is NO WAY for me to google search or drive around asking for Vegan restaurants, until now. Eating is a basic necessity. Us vegans don’t always have the option for food in remote locations. Happy Cow has made my life much easier and given me more options that I would most likely never have discovered. THANK YOU!!! -Navy Chief⚓️
