Great app that just needs a few minor tweaks

I'm really enjoying the Knox News app. A few suggested improvements include fewer ads (since I am a paying subscriber), fewer "subscribe" links in articles for those who already subscribe, and using the swipe gesture to return to the previous screen after opening a 'deep link' or other popup. Great content though!

Just OK

I don’t understand why this app cannot be identical to the USA Today version. When turning pages, the display should got to the top of the page, not the bottom where I ended on the previous page. I am a paid subscriber, yet I have to endure additional ads at the beginning of the paper, and at the first page of the sports section. Until recently, this was not a problem. The ads appear superimposed on the top of the newspaper page and there is no way to skip them. You have to just wait them out. If it weren’t for the local news, I would cancel and just read USA Today.

Smaller view, pop-up ads

I have the old Knox News app, and while not great, it is superior to this new app. I was excited at first, with the other features, but soon disappointed. When reading the eNews edition, it is placed inside the main app’s top and bottom icon bars, AND it has its own icon bars inside of that area. Meaning, there are now TWO icon bars at the top and two at the bottom with the actual content squished in the middle. When you switch to the eNews Edition, go full screen and get rid of the extra icon bars. Second, each time I would hit a new section, a pop-up ad would appear, with a time delay until I could close it. And I mean EVERY time I hit the first page of a section, even if I had already seen it and went back. There are no pop-up ads in the other app, I have a paid subscription to the eNewsEdition. I shouldn’t have to delay my reading so they can show me an ad. I went back to the old app, this one is terrible.

Great app

When you first download it, there are tons of notifications active. After you go into settings and customize it to your liking it’s not as intrusive. Was relatively easy to do so I still give it 5 stars. As much as I like printed versions of the news paper, I enjoy having up to the minute stories at my disposal.

Opting out of tracking and targeted ads

Is not available to be changed anywhere within the app. I went to the website and was greeted with a huge mess. Go to this website to do this. Download the app choices app… Go to opt-out tool… blah blah. Ridiculous. This is clearly done to make it so people cannot easily say NO. Do the right thing. Please. Allow us to block ads and targeting. Otherwise, I’ll be a subscriber and reader you lose. More importantly, Southerners value their space and privacy. You violate that by not allowing us to opt out in the app and on the news website.

Knoxville News Review.

I read the news paper daily. I like to be informed of the goings on in our great city plus international news and current events. I find that your paper provides that as well as sports, current weather, and upcoming events in town. I really enjoy the fresh perspective of the editorials, and the comics poking fun at Sarge and Beetle among others.

Worst news app

This app is super annoying. As you scroll down the available sports related articles to get to the other stories, the app scrolls right back up to the top and you have to start over again, and again, and again. Let’s not forget the pop up ads that are every three or four articles and never go away. If you’re interested in the attractive singles in your area, the top attorneys, or information on purchasing unused vehicles that are being sold super cheap by the government, then this is the app for you.

News When You Want It

It’s SO convenient to read the paper on my phone or tablet. I can read the news on my time. The stories are relevant and important to the residents in the area. Well written and informative news stories. I really like the area history pieces as well as the human interest stories printed in this app. Great Newspaper.

Love the local news

I have been getting the Sunday paper and with that subscription, I can get the digital version daily. I downloaded the app and was able to set my preferences for the type of topics I’m most interested in and get notifications on my phone. Love keeping updated that way. Great app!

I love the local news and updates locally. I don't like the way you omit some political parties and their opinions. I do check the obituaries every day and Usually work the number puzzle.

Impossible to read in small screen digital

Decided I no longer need the frustration of trying to read content on my phone. Only about 10% of the content is useful info anyway. I’m tired of the pop ups blocking my reading attempts. I tried to cancel the subscription and the app can’t even offer that. You have to call a live person so they can talk you out of it.

You’re subscribing to ads more than news

I am a paid subscriber. I tried to scroll through the headlines and was harassed by the same ad THIRTY-FIVE TIMES! The ad continuously repositions itself and impacts the scrolling function within the user interface. It is so obnoxious that I’m not sure it’s worth it to try to read the news. I would encourage prospective subscribers to look elsewhere for a news source that has a more reasonable ad policy.

Stop it with the injection of sign ups

I can’t get through an single article, that I pay you to present, without such Annoying ads and signup questions. Do yo want to sign up for , this, that and the other…. STOP!!!!! I’m canceling the subscription in one month if you don’t fix it. I’ve turned off everything in the app and it continues….

The coverage of key controversial is boldly objective. Local issues, politics, and events of interest will keep this subscriber a satisfied customer.

Keeps blocking me from articles asking me to subscribe ?

I’m a paid subscriber. Can’t read most of the papers articles because block pops up asking me to subscribe. I sent in email asking for help.. no response. I can’t find way to fix problem. Content is good if you could actually read it. I hope someone reads this and tries to contact me to resolve issue before I cancel.

Could use less advertising

The ap is okay but I agree with the other reviewer the ads are a distraction. The content is good and often times news is before the television stations get it,

Crashes too much

I have tried to open the “paper” several times and am met with a grey screen. The most recent frustration involved opening the “paper” and beginning to read a story only to have the app close the page and reload everything. Major bugs!

Best local news and a great app!

They are not afraid to give in depth coverage of stories many take strong sides on. I know some of the zealots out there complain. We appreciate the fair and balanced coverage.

Orientation is locked to portrait in enewspaper

Landscape was especially useful for reading comics. Swiping to change pages is not always responsive. Not all pages are available from the sections display. For readers of the e-edition, this app is worse than the older e-edition app; fewer options, more difficult navigation. I will probably uninstall this and return to the old app.

Terrible

After subscribing to the news paper, they still bombard you with ads. Even worse, if you accidentally click on a video, an ad launches that you cannot close until it finishes. You can’t get back to the newspaper without force-closing the app. It’s difficult to support local news with apps like this.

Review of recent changes to KNS & USAToday Apps

While they may yet prove to be better, the lack of user testing caused a real mess. Both the USAToday and News Sentinel would repeatedly fail for a variety of reasons. Tech support consisted of trying to understand what the people in the Philippines were trying to suggest as remedies was very frustrating! I like the content and presentation but 6 WEEKS of user agravation / frustration is not good business. AND ITS STILL HAPPENING!!! Please get the Apps fully functional and bug free🙏🙏🙏

Disappointing, complex. No joy.

Logging in was ridiculously difficult. Password manager did not work with this site. The app kept taking me back to the same sign in page. Once logged in, could not find my way to a previous edition of Knoxville news Sentinel. If you’re planning to go mostly to an E edition format, you must clean up this app.

Wish it had more features

Without Fit the page, I have to constantly scroll to see the entire page on my ipad. It also takes a long time to get clear text on some pages.

Review

I used to think the NS hired college sophomores as writers. I was wrong. More like high school sophomores. Terrible. Just look at a digital front page article today on a UT football player’s arrest. What is the purpose of the story? It is impossible to follow the logic of the article. This is typical. I find myself having to re-read NS articles to understand what the “reporter” is saying, the point of the article. Greg Conner Knoxville

Needs work

I find this app very frustrating. If I try to adjust an article to read more clearly it jumps to another page with no relevance. After this happened multiple times I’m ready to unsubscribe to the newspaper if this is the only way I can read it online.

Freezes up

The old app worked great but this one freezes up on my iPad and has to be reset several times during any reading of the paper. I sure wish I could get the old app back!

New app

I am sorry but I really hate the new app. I have been a subscriber for many many years both printed and electronic. The ads are very annoying and the stability is horrible. It’s enough to make me switch to another paper if one were available. Sorry…I love the news but hate the app!

Pop ups!

Just stop with the pop ups! If I want to r ad an article, I will select it! Trying to read one and THREE pop ups interrupted! Maddening! Also the “select topics” section (which I’ve done) won’t allow you to remove it—the “x” at the upper right is non-functional. Pretty clunky app given it’s 2023!

Awful

There are 3 horizontal bars across the screen, making it very difficult to read. The arrows to turn a page are always on the screen, and not transparent. A reader has to continually shift the page up and down to read. Frustrating!

I have more than 100 apps and this is the worst one I own. And so I called during the hours you list and get the message, after pushing buttons three times, to call back during NORMAL hours. I guess that’s not the ones on your list of times to call.

Very buggy

I have found this app to freeze up several time during read. I have to get out of it and then try again. It can be frustrating.

Help!

My Mom has this app so it’s on my phone with Family Sharing. I am paying the subscription and she can not read anything. The VPN message has taken over. I can not get a message to the developer and can’t even cancel the subscription. I’m tired of paying every month for something that is useless!!!!!!

Ads auto run videos - terrible!

This app was my go to for local news. The recent change of auto running videos has pushed me to use the local tv station apps for news. You killed a good app! Why am I paying for this!!!!!

Pop up audio ads

Long time KNS subscriber, both paper and digital for many years. I’m canceling my subscription due to the obnoxious pop-up ads with audio. I can deal with pop up ads but not ads that wake up my wife as I’m reading the KNS in bed. KNS…. Shame on you.

Lots of ads. Not much news.

I guess what we get for a paid subscription is a ton of ads and very little news. This is the news wasteland we live in now.
