Good source for local news but no in-app subscription
I don't have an issue with the app. It is a good source for local news. What is preventing me from subscribing is that there is no in-app subscription. The app store information states that there is an in-app purchase option. The app settings menu has a term of service that indicates the subscription will be through apple. However, when you click any of the subscription options it takes you to the RJ site. One of the best things about purchasing through in-app purchases is the ability to consolidate and easily manage all of your subscriptions in one place. No more having to figure out how to change or cancel a subscription. If you look at the fine print of RJs terms of service (after they forward you to their website to subscribe), you will find that the cancel process involves calling a number. You know how that goes. Hard no for me. Offer in-app and I'll subscribe.
I like to read the e-edition on my iPad. I prefer to pinch to zoom in and out of a page, rather than touch a story to open it entirely (you know, the way you would read a paper newspaper…with a magnifying glass). But it’s a delicate little dance to get the zooming to stay and not push the entire edition off the side of the visible screen. Don’t understand why I can’t zoom in and out wherever I please. Also, greatly miss the ability to message a story link through the app. Now have to find it online and copy the URL to paste in a message. Makes me disinclined to share great journalism with others.
Previously wrote review complaining of 1” bar at top. After trying to read paper a few minutes, found this bar is for ADVERTISEMENTS! I pay a subscription to this newspaper and it has ads. I don’t need to be inundated with more ads from Google. Also, the app itself is unusable. Links to open full article don’t work, page swiping doesn’t always work, text is blurry, just to name a few. Edit review - app updated and issues resolved. Google ads still appear but now with the option to close the ad.
All the other apps I have with email subscriptions (Nevada Independent, New York times cooking, Americas test kitchen, among others) seem to have no problem opening the app when links are selected from emails except this one. Instead, it opens a web link that doesn’t know that I have a subscription so it warns me that I have limited access and I need to login. This is very annoying!
When I open the app it says there is an update when I click on the update message it takes me to the App Store where there is NO update button only an open button. Is there an update???
I just downloaded the new app and it is already a huge improvement. You can see all the stories current and past plus other content that wasn’t available before. The layout makes it much easier to go from story to story. Pictures are so much better too.
The old version let me download the entire edition for offline reading and performance. The new version is constantly updating the screen for readability as you flip from page to page; the old version didn’t do that especially when you downloaded it before reading. Download only has pdf option now, I thought the ‘90’s were over…..
The news itself is good. The app is terrible. Open a news story and about half the time it closes the app. I have never had a video be able to play. (Yes, my phone is up to date.) While reading articles the ads often refresh moving the entire page and it can be difficult to find where you left off. Then a few moments later it happens again. Good news — terrible app.
The latest update is nothing short of a disaster. It locks up on the tour of changes page and takes a miracle to move on. The navigation is clunky, slow, and lacks logic. Intuitive is not a word that in any way, shape, or form can describe this app. No artificial intelligence whatsoever. In fact, no intelligence of any kind. Having recently canceled our print delivery, I’m seriously rethinking whether or not to abandon the RJ all together.
It’s disgusting to have a newspaper application that can download a paper, but the download cannot be viewed offline, like during a flight. I am disappointed to see this issue was pointed out two years ago and acknowledged by the developer a year ago, but it has not been incorporated an an enhancement request.
With the latest update, the app no longer recognizes my log-in credentials. The actual error message is “Please enter a valid email address.” My email is correct, as is the saved password. I do hope the app developers can look into this and fix, as I am a subscriber who now cannot access the paper.
I like the app and the Las Vegas Review, lots of good articles and alerts based on my settings. The one major item missing is the ability to bookmark articles you like.
Agree that the "share" link via text only sends the main homepage link rather than specific article. Also, I get an "updated version now available" every night since I've updated?!
At least 3 to 4 times each week I must remove the entire app and reinstall. Only on occasion will it ask to update. Are they trying to drive readers away? It sure looks like it.
New app blinks and just looks terrible. Every time you read an article or go back-and-forth the screen will act like it is opening and closing the app. Very annoying. I would gladly pay for this app if you offered something more than free does.
I want to unsubscribe to this newspaper but the company keeps you on hold for what feels like an eternity. That is not an ethical way to do business. Be wary of subscribing to this service because it will be very difficult to unsubscribe.
Freezes after any move. Every day I have been deleting app then shutting off iPad and iPhone. Then I reinstall. Oaks for headlines but not epaper. Messaged RJ on Facebook and they would refer it to tech support. Never heard from them. Next step, CANCEL PAPER.
The app is horrible, the news are good. Now no news unless you pay for a subscription. Well I don’t pay so no more RJ. Channel 5 Las Vegas is the same but free.
I love my daily newspaper subscription to the LVRJ and like that I have electronic access via online and app subscription as well, but this app is horribly buggy and crashes every single time I use it, multiple times. About half the time it won’t even load the first time I open the app and I have to close it out completely and reopen. About a third of the time I do this I have to repeat since it doesn’t solve the problem. When it does open and it works, it is super slow and lags a ton. I end up inadvertently tapping ads when I try to scroll because the touch is so unresponsive. As a news industry I get that they make money selling ads but the ads in the app make it nearly unusable. They are cumbersome, in the way, and frequently cause the app to crash. Every single time I am using the app it freezes and I have to close it and reopen to resume reading. I have had the app for over six months and i keep hoping it will be fixed, but it has never gotten better. Hands down the worst app on any device I own. Bottom line: if you are an RJ subscriber, stick to your paper copy because the electronic app is slow, unresponsive, glitchy, buggy, and it crashes.
Most of the time when you try to launch the app it just hangs on an all white screen. When you actually get something on your screen it usually asks about updating (the content, I guess?). Do you actually want to read a news story? The joke's on you. Most likely, trying to actually read an article will crash the app. Watch a news video? Completely out of the question. That will definitely crash this app. They think that anyone will pay money for this in the future? What a joke. I'm embarrassed for them. Does no one at the LVRJ actually do ANY quality assurance?
Moving here in 2 months. Trying to stay informed by reading paper. It keeps getting stuck with pop up adds that are not even for LV businesses and I have to delete and reload the app. The little daily paper I have here in Maine is much more functional, easy to navigate, and never gets stuck. Come on- if you want circulation, make the effort. It is just as bad on my iPad.
App is terrible. Buggy and at times very difficult to navigate. On many occasions, I would need to exit the app and access the RJ through their website in order to finish reading an article or navigate to a different section. I enjoy having online access to the RJ but the app itself is absolutely horrible and extremely frustrating to use.
There’s no search feature. Drives me crazy since the app puts stories in categories that don’t often make sense. It also doesn’t seem like the entire print edition available. Why no archives?
This app has been very unreliable. Frequent instances where the app will close when a story is opened or the app will fail to load past the main screen. On top of that, they want to now charge for it even though there is plenty of built in advertising. Not worth it even if the news quality was better.
I have a paid subscription and read the e-edition every morning. A few months ago they relaunched their app, and I was having to put my ID and password in every day, which was ridiculous and annoying. NOW, with whatever update they did the other day, the e-edition doesn't launch at all. This is day 2 of no newspaper on a PAID subscription.
App is extremely slow and freezes on a regular basis. I recently performed a search for an article that was published the day prior and it would not show in the results. To test this I did a search of an article that was in the current edition by exact spelling and nothing. Too many other issues to go in to. Don’t waste your time.
I loved reading the local news when I travelled, but since the update, I can no longer load the e-edition to read my favorite sections. The update did NOT fix bugs, but made them.
This app used to be so good. I don’t know what happened. Perhaps they changed it to force people to pay for it? Look around the country...newspapers are moving to app based and generating money via advertising so why would RJ do this? I do like their content that’s why I gave two stars
The push alerts are overwhelming. They send way too many of them for non-important news. The daily alerts about the Raiders and WNBA basketball team are annoying. Until I can customize the alerts, I am turning off the alerts and considering deleting the app.
This is an ok app for local news. The problem is that it is very slow and crashes frequently. So now I learn that they are going to start charging for the app. Count me out.
The area in the app where you can access the eEdition of the newspaper fails to open. Constant spinning wheel. Also, when it was working prior to update I was required to "Sign in" about 60% of the time, even when viewing an article.
The latest iteration feels like a WAPP (web app) - a cheap and barely functional way to display content. It crashes constantly. But, alas, the paper is the only one in town so they likely won’t take any steps to make this app stable, much less functional.
The complete revamp awhile back broke this app completely. Does not look load at all. Deleted and reloaded several times. Should have left it alone. It worked fine before and was a useable and attractive design. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
