necn: New England Local News

I really was only interested in the weather part of this App since I used the old NECN Weather App and they discontinued it. I like how your can have the weather open automatically when you launch the App. The weather portion of the App is very well done. The News section on my IPad is rather annoying, if you click on a story then return to the main news feed it takes you to the top of the news feed, not where you left off so you have to scroll down to get back to where you left off. And the Sports section is formatted differently than the News, also doesn’t seem to include sports schedules for the different teams. All in all a decent App, especially the weather part.

UPDATED June 15th 2022: All issues per my previous ratings have been fixed. The app now loads correctly every time I open the app. Whatever bug that was crashing the app must have been addressed. The feature to add/remove city has been update. You can easily add/delete city’s if you travel frequently as well as easily reorder the cities you prioritize. I travel frequently, surf and ride motorcycles, this is the all I consistently rely on for the most accurate radar imagery and storm tracking. Thanks for continuing to keep your app updated and relevant!! This is my updated review as of May 2022. Great app, I use it mostly for weather. They have made some useful updates however over the last 4-6 months it continually crashes or won’t open. I have the newest phone/software and have deleted and reinstalled multiple times but can’t get it to work consistently. I love the accuracy of the radar and layer options but unfortunately it’s pretty useless if it won’t open. NECN, Please fix asap. It’s surf and motorcycle season, I need my radar back!!! ORIGINAL review a few years prior to the more Recent review above in 2022: They still haven’t added the feature to allow you to 1 click adjust or reorder the locations for weather. I travel for business a lot and often adjust and change weather locations. It’s a pain to delete and re-add all your locations if you want to reorder the way they are displayed.

Just downloaded the app. Had read reviews here, where the developer wrote that you can set your start screen so the app “feels like a weather app,” however, clicking on the NECN on the top left does NOT bring up a menu that lists that as an option (on ios- iPhone). Am I missing something, or has that feature been taken away? Hoping it’s the former, as I liked the older weather app; it’s the main reason I downloaded this news app. If there’s no option anymore to set your home screen, making it necessary to wade through a lot of other items just to navigate to what I really want to see, then I question whether I have use for it. Have read the FAQ for the answer to this question and could not find an answer. Might anyone please help?

The new update is terrible, nothing loads, just the spiraling wheel. And like another mentioned the news is terrible, a few current articles and then things still on there that are months old. I really wish you would bring back the original weather app. It was so good and so accurate. Now the entire app is useless. Thank you for the consideration. Original review 2+ years ago: I am at a loss for my weather now, this is not even remotely as good as the old NECN weather app. Please have your developers update the old app so it is compatible with IOS 11. The old app was my “go to” and I recommended it to everyone I knew... especially those on the sports sidelines with me. Thank you for your consideration. And, I see the “developer response” on all the bad reviews is “oh the old app just isn’t compatible “.

I used to be able to log in with my Comcast xfinity provider since Comcast technically owns the channel and now I can’t. Under the settings of my iPhone 11, necn is listed as being able to access my tv provider, but the full list on the app/website doesn’t include it.

This was the only weather app I used until the latest update, which changed everything and makes it almost impossible to see any of the text since they changed the font to something completely illegible. Who thought this was ready to release and they must have terrific vision if they think this is better then before. I hate to say it, but any other weather app is better than this now. Absolutely disappointing and they should be embarrassed of themselves, ruining a perfectly functional and easy to see and read weather app.

I only use this app for weather. With the latest update, I can no longer see the 10 day forecast in text format. All I see is a thumbnail to a video style 10 day forecast. Not my preferred method for 2-5+ days out to say the least, I want the details. App has also been unstable (mostly) on my mesh WiFi for well over a year and a half. It opens as it should maybe 4 out if 10 times, but usually just doesn’t load. This has also happened while not using WiFi. I have provided feedback in the app several times, and received replies, but there has never been any positive change in the apps functionality. Time to look to another weather app, this was the last straw for me

Extremely happy with the NECN app, especially the weather. I’ve tried several weather specific apps and non compare! I travel a lot, so having the option of entering several locations for current weather is very helpful. The NECN weather team is terrific and more accurate than other New England weather forecasts; especially the 10 day forecast. I believe the NECN 10 day forecast is the only one in New England. I’m not trying any other weather apps! Matt Noyes is the best!! So at ease and knowledgeable!

I liked the old version but I understand that it could not be updated for the new iOS. However the new version has problems with the weather. The scrolling is very jerky if you change location when it changes the map. Also when you change location the hourly forecast does not change. Try the winter forecast in Boston and Orlando. It will show the same hourly forecast for both. It also does not update the hourly forecast if you reopen it later in the day. The only way around this is to completely terminate the app not just close it.

Update: The app has improved! Easy to set different locations now. It's my go to source for current and upcoming weather wherever I'm headed. Thanks for the improvements! Original review: Loved the original NECN Weather app. Update with News app is not an improvement! Not easy to set locations, and have to scroll forever to get daily and hourly updates. I'll stick with original NECN weather app as long as I can!

Why when I click a recent headline do you give me a completely different article to read??? Why when I clicked 'several' local article links just now do you link me to the same page with a UK news article about bald men?? ARE YOU STUPID OVER THERE AT NECN??? IS YOUR DOG CODING THE NEWS APP? Are you as bad at getting the news right as you are at making this app work?? Did you do any QA testing before you launched this update? It's been a problem of wrong links for many, many updates. Is your weather anchor coding the app in his spare time??

This App works well. The information you can find on it, whether it be weather or news, are often accurate from time to time. Very informative more often than not. I highly recommend using this Application to try and find out what they think the weather may or may not be that day or what might be happening or possibly happened around the world.

I have been a long time fan of NECN to get my local news and weather. Their app is great and full of information. You can set your preference to weather or news when you open the app. I have notifications set up as well so I can updates on news stories and weather as it happens. Love this app, love this channel!

You can always count on NECN to have the most updated & accurate weather forecast video available Earlier in the morning than any of the other local stations & apps - which is useful & necessary if you don’t have the time to watch the tv you can go right to the app & watch the update immediately

I’m not saying anything that previous reviews haven’t already covered. This used to be an amazing app. The best one for New England. However, updates, and maybe company changes, policies, etc. have rendered this completely useless as far as I’m concerned. We deleted this and now we use Fox 25 which is pretty much the same as the NECN App used to be about 3 years ago. It’s a total shame that NECN couldn’t respond to their customer’s complaints and concerns and see what a good thing they had.

I’ve actually stopped patronizing a couple of businesses just for running their tedious gasbag ads on this app. I don’t care about the overacting nonunion talent with a severe Revere accent pretending to have an orgasm over your shingle sale when I’m trying to see if a tornado is coming toward my house. If you accidentally click away and have to restart the video, you might as well off yourself because you’re in for an advertising double feature. It’s like the developers have never used the Internet. Also the map is crap.

After the last update I saw that the map background was grey. I didn’t like it! I learned I couldn’t change it back, so I thought to give it time. I now find the contrast of the grey much better than the previous color! The addition of the smart radar and the playback showing the moving radar works so much better than before! I’m sure I’ll find other improvements as I use it more and more. Thanks!

I used to and still do like the weather part of this app but a recent update makes it always open up to the news. This annoyed me but this morning it ruined my enjoyment of watching the olympics by putting it in my face that France upset the USA in basketball as I literally had just turned it on and the game is airing at almost half time but now I can't watch it because necn ruined it for me. Why would you put this on the opening page??? You are deleted and I'll have to settle for a lesser weather app

I like the areas that are covered in your news broadcast. Even though I’m from Western mass, I appreciate that you cover farther reaching areas other than just a small section of Massachusetts. When your meteorologists do the weather, they mention the weather pattern coming from New York and the Great Lakes, in addition to parts north of Massachusetts.

Love this ap, it has the weather w radar and 10 day forecast and of course the hourly forecast. Awesome site to review for now and the future. Plus accurate as well. Also also current events to scan at same site. I hope to always have access to this ap.

I use the NECN app to quickly find local news and weather. I can get info much faster than waiting for TV news time slots. I check the app routinely at least twice a day rather than alerts. Highly recommended

I can get the info I want but like most news apps the quality is lacking because of the downward slide into social media views. A typical user has a phone and the information content should be succinct and clear. Social media is designed for infinite scrolling to keep eyeballs on advertisement. I prefer the information be more clearly presented — weather today and through the week with deeper layers like videos presented carefully and selected for value over just filler in existing spaces.

Owning a landscape company the weather plays a massive role. NECN app gives incredibly accurate updates when weather is heading my may. I have gotten notifications saying rain in your area in 15 minutes and it is dead on. Matt Noyes is a character and extremely good at his job. Look no further for weather apps.

This app presents the weather in an easy to view way, good for the next 24 hours and the coming week. The latest update has made it much easier to switch between different locations. A little buggy when switching to foreign cities, but excellent for New England.

Long time NECN subscriber. I wake up to catch my days forecast and news. Always felt like I miss out on news, but now this app has filled the gaps. As a busy on the go guy, I'm able to watch "live tv" on the go and catch up on the latest news info. At any given time. Thanks for making it possible!

My husband and I have been reading our MA news here for many years. It is usually well written and easily understood. The weather app is great. We moved from MA three years ago but still faithfully read our AM news here. It keeps us up to date with things occurring in our home state, without the built up "fake news" of other apps.

I avoided the upgrade because most of the reviews were bad. I think people loved the simplicity of the old weather app. But this one is good too. After a few days it's just as good. I didn't like the change at first either but keep an open mind and see that this is just as good. In some cases better.

I am using your app to follow the Karen Read murder trial. It’s helpful to be able to watch clips of the trial to catch up on the latest developments. I also use it to follow the news in my hometown.

This has been a go-to app for local news. However, the new version [6.18] freezes immediately upon launch -you can’t navigate to any content or stories. This is 100% repeatable on an ipPro running iOS 14.7. To add a bit of salt to the wound, the app support link in the App Store goes to a missing page. Best not to upgrade until a fixed version is released.

Love this site! This is where I go for the most accurate, up to date, and un-cluttered weather forecasts for whatever my current location is. I grew up in Boston and now live on the southern coast of Maine. The news provided keeps me up to date here in Maine, down in Boston, and all over New England.

The only reason why I downloaded this app is so that the NECN weather app will stop asking me to download it.…guess what: it still asks me every time. Very frustrating. The app itself is mediocre at best and the constant buffering for videos is intolerable. Deleting ASAP. Update: Why couldn't you just leave well enough alone? All I needed was a simple, yet comprehensive weather app (which you had) and you've turned it into garbage. Why did you turn it into an everything news app.

My second review of this helpful weather app. Great to see all of NE and get an idea of weathers roots to come. BUT! Why do you treat dew points and wind chill factors like they are mysteries we cannot understand?? Up them on the site, please!! Humidity is useless!! Change it over to the dew point and wind chill. I find the app up to date, newsworthy, economical, concise, timely, interesting, all encompassing of the 6 state region and better than the channel 7 and channel 5 app which seems slow and clumsy and all about the shallow glitter that permeates life in general. The weather is fairly spot on and I do not follow sports at all so there you go.

I greatly appreciate the weather alerts. We live in the northeast corner of Ct; Therefore local Boston news alerts are not of interest to us., such as accidents, crimes,etc, are more of a distraction. We, in Ct. have plenty of our own distractions. Keep up the good work with accurate weather information & thank you very much.

I’ve used several news apps over the years from various companies and this is by far one of the better ones. Nice interface and not just a glorified web browser stuck in an app.

The weather part of the app is my go to for weather, especially first thing in the morning. It’s pretty accurate. I like that they include the real feel as part of the temp. There aren’t many unpleasant surprises. The news parts of the app are just okay. Wish they would stop,,

Really like NECN for weather. They are as accurate as humans can be, it seems to me. I particularly like that they pay attention to Cape Cod where the weather can be very different from elsewhere in New England. The app is easy and logical and give the information I need.

It works and gives me the local weather I need. I hated switching cause I loved the old app. I’m getting used to it. When the old app stopped I tried 3 other weather apps. This one is still much better than them all. Thanks!

The app used to work really well and in the last few months in the iOS platform won’t allow me to connect to the weather portion and completely freezes. Plenty of storage on my phone and no WiFi or connection issue just the app freezes….. I hope it can be corrected, necn is great just the app is struggling…

For my purposes of staying aware in this day and age, this app is perfect. It gives me timely updates on the latest news and weather. Thanks for developing it.

The notifications come with a few lines of text. Able to see if need to read immediately. End of my day click alerts in app and quickly see day’s headlines to catchup. With video or just reading. Extremely nice to have this choice to save battery life. Some afs seem inappropriate...

Always found getting the news and weather reports very help. Never had an issue with the app and enjoy reading the news. Great job and looking forward into reading your next articles.

Used to like the future forecasting radar map from the previous app. This new one does not behave well in that mode.. We can live with it. But, the previous one was much nicer. The weekly forecasting is a good feature with this new app and I also like the videos

I use this app every morning for a quick look at the news and most of all the weather reports because I drive a truck for a living and want to know how to dress for the day. The staff is very professional and insightful. Keep on Rockin!!!

We used the NECN app religiously-mainly to check the weather. Now, inexcusable load times and crashing have rendered this once great app to nothing more than a waste of space in my weather folder. Our truly is a shame. The last update to this app was three months ago. Looks like the parent company has set its priorities elsewhere. Don’t download this app for weather or any other reason.

I actually liked the look and navigation of the old version better in general. There are are so many ads! The same ones over and over and never a chance to click through them.

Have used this app (and only this app) for weather for years now. I had tried numerous others over the years but this NECN app has by far been the best of them all for accurate weather conditions and predictions

Great app on my iPhone Xs running IOS 14.6. However, the app on my iPad Pro running iPadOS 14.6 is broken. Can open the app then nothing happens. Clicking does nothing. Tried a reinstall and it did not fix the issues.

Love the new app update. Layout is so much better than the old version. Playback of radar is immediate, no more waiting for it to load. About time someone updated an app and actually improved it.
