Everything I have needed that other apps lack
No folder collapse ✅ Respects folder hierarchy ✅ Easy and intuitive sub controls ✅ Prefer landscape toggle ✅ Everything locked behind pay wall is truly advanced features. Subtitles work great out of the box and you have size and placement, further customization is truly just a bonus feature and I understand paying for it. It will play your videos out of the box. If you want it to play them a specific way in regards to encoding I completely understand paying for that. I really like the way this app does it’s pay structure and will gladly pay next month with the first of my app budget. I download a lot of anime and the other apps always try and use the filenames for structure. But there’s no consistency so it ends with just a giant list of all the videos. This app allows you to maintain your files from within the Files and have it display it perfectly. Honestly this should just be the built in video player for iOS. If this was what the files app was integrated with that would be a dream. Would love to see a feature for scraping metadata for files and have actual control over it. Often times just want the cover for a show or episode. Don’t want or need anything else changed. Setting folder icons would be cool as well. I will note, not sure if iOS issue but it did not create a Files folder until I created a folder from within outplayer. It also didn’t natively recognize the folder I created named OUTPLAYER in Files.

Flawless hardware decoding
Edited because it now has HDR support, yay! Compared to VLC, this app hardware decodes more often than not with supported codecs (VLC sometimes inexplicably doesn’t with 10bit HEVC files [device heats up] that this app can decode with hardware). It’s simplistic design is wonderful and I don’t feel compelled to dive into the settings and micromanage everything. What would make it even more of an essential video player is if true HDR output could be added, or at least it doesn’t work properly on the SE3. There’s an argument to be made that the benefits of HDR are limited on a simple LCD display, but when playing back HDR-encoded content like Sony’s Swordsmith demo in the system Files app, it will display in HDR mode as denoted by an HDR icon on the top left and the peak brightness and color gamut seem just a bit better compared to how it looks in this app and VLC (which also messes up the color, presumably from not getting the color gamut right). Ignore what I said about casting, I forgot you had to mirror screen using AirPlay for that to work.

Extremely high quality video player
It’s rare to find such a treasure of an app, but Outplayer is handily one of the best video players available for iOS. The gesture controls are intuitive, the interface is clean, and the local web server is straightforward to use for transferring content. Attention to detail is given in small but delightful ways, such as the swipe seek pausing on +-0, useful for when you try to peek ahead bur returning to the current playback position. And the privacy policy is perfect. It states plainly: no user data is transmitted or collected. This app simply is an excellent port of MPV to mobile. My only wish is for smb support with file browsing, since I try to keep my data consolidated on my NAS. So while I fulfill that need with another app for now, that doesn’t stop me from giving this app 5/5 stars and a full recommendation if you can deal with transferring media you plan to watch ahead of time.

Wish I could give it six stars
Edit: still wish I could give this more stars. Love the new speed gesture! I wish these other video players had the same clever implementation. I always look forward to your updates. Loving it more and more. While I have Infuse and NPlayer Plus I am now making this my primary player. The only caveat to seven stars - scrubbing videos I tend to trigger the notification window on the phone. I wish we could have an option to move the video scrubber to the bottom of the screen versus having it at the top. Otherwise, I like the new sub menu to skip videos without exiting the player UI. Works better on the tablet though since the screenshot option takes up valuable space :)

Super Impressive
I rarely write reviews, but had to for this. I wanted a video player that would play my x265 HDR 4K video files. VLC could play the video smoothly, but didn’t show HDR. PlayerXTreme showed HDR, but the video had dropped frames/was laggy. It also had ads that had no way to close without force closing the app. Infuse wouldn’t let me play 4K without subscription. Then, I discovered Outplayer. A nimble app that easily and quickly played my videos with no stuttering, with full 4K, had no stuttering, and it was completely free. Unbelievable. This is one of the best apps I’ve discovered and I’m so thankful to the developers for making it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for the absolute best video player app on iOS/iPadOS.

Best video player I’ve used on iOS!
The interface is simple and to the point while still being on par with competitors like VLC and Infuse. Video playback is the selling point of Outplayer, outshining its competitors like VLC and Infuse. It’s able to play back basically any video that I can throw at it without asking to pay for codecs like Infuse will, or temporary video artifacts that VLC can occasionally run into. The video loop feature alone is fantastic, being gapless and not struggling at all like VLC does for me. Truly fantastic, and I already know that when I get the chance, I want to support the developer with the premium upgrade.

Excellent app, but has flaws
I’ve used this app to view mkv files, and it works perfectly with full quality. I love the UI, and it’s easy to view any file from the files app. The only thing I hate is that whenever I enable the local wifi server to transfer files to my computer, 90% of the files give me an error to transfer. It’s irritating and I have to use google drive instead of transferring it directly. Everything else works fine, but that’s my only pet peeve. UPDATE: The file transferring has been working now, with a couple of tries. Thank you!

I love MPV!
MPV is the golden standard — I love this app because of it, now we we can use it on mobile. Bought premium and it was worth it for the extras feature too. Feature Requests! - please add mpv config support! This would be extremely powerful and unlock the full potential of the mpv integrations. Specifically I’m interested in messing with saturation and other basic video filters, but I’m sure others would have other usecases. - please add picture-in-picture support — this would enable multi-tasking while binge-watching shows and would be a killer feature (i.e. I don’t think other video player support this)

Exactly What I Need!
Love this app it’s simple, there’s no online streaming nonsense tied to it. I can organize my folders how I want and it’s easy to transfer everything to the folder on my iPad. It would be nice if I could toggle the continuous playback setting by folder so some files will continue while others won’t but I can deal. If this app was available on my Mac then my life would be complete. Please if it’s possible add this to the Mac App Store, I would even pay again if that’s what was necessary to get it there. Thank you for this app I am very grateful!!

Perfect for iPad Pro
I’ve been looking for an app that makes playing your local media files easy. VLC was a pain because even though it plays everything, for some reason it does not organize your files, making what should be simple into a complete mess. This app picks up the slack, and is well worth the full price for the extra features. If you don’t want to pay, this app still is far better than the others I’ve tried. I hope the developer continues to build on the great job they’ve done with this app!

Quite a bit better than VLC from everything I’ve seen so far
UI is sharp, unobtrusive feature for premium, HDR support. This player is incredible. Best I’ve used on IOS so far. All codecs are supported on free, as well as 4k support and HDR. All on the free version, unlike Infuse. Can’t wait to see the direction this player heads. I recommend focusing on the menu interface. It looks good as is, but I could see room for improvement. The UI while video is playing is top notch. I just knew I had to drop a rating, I’m so beyond pleased with this product.

Absolutely brilliant
Sure, vlc can play every video format, but its UI is just horrendous. Outplayer so far has been able to play all videos I have with absolutely pretty and minimalistic interface. I love how it groups videos by folder, a feature I think VLC has somewhere but I just couldn’t figure out. I also love how it can extract chapters and credit sections of a movie. I probably don’t need to pro version to have brightness and volume gestures but I buy it anyway to support the dev. Thanks for a great app!

Exactly what I wanted.
I was looking for a way to play videos on my iPhone and iPad the same way I do on my PC with MPV and THIS IS IT. I can send files into Outplayer and organize them using the Files app or use the local web server if I want, fully styled subtitles and different video containers and codecs are supported with hardware acceleration, even with ordered chapters, it’s FAST, and it doesn’t crash on me like VLC has been doing lately. I’m so happy this exists and that I managed to find it from a self promo on reddit. This is the video player I was looking for. THANK YOU.

Great Video Player
Just want to say, this app is great. I have tried various other media players in the App Store and came to the conclusion that this one has the most potential. It is light weight and provides a simple yet customizable experience. Overall i highly recommend using this to manage your videos over other programs and hopefully the features are improved even further in future updates!

Great video player
my only suggestion to the developer is to show a little unlock more features button on the little in video settings area, where speed controls and file loop is. I was really looking for speed controls and they weren't there, I almost gave up on your app having that without looking the settings for the app level. I looked there and was glad you had the feature. Good implementation, saved me from making my own.

This is the player you’ve been looking for.
This app is free, therefore I have zero complaints. It’s absolutely brilliant and the fact that it plays .mkv without premium subscription is awesome. Now, having said that, this is a list of features I wish Outplayer had and I would gladly pay for. - Download manager - Subtitle downloader - Resizable subtitles - Getting artwork and metadata from trakt/IMDb/however it works. - Gesture controls of volume and brightness And yes, I do know that Infuse offers all the above and more, but I appreciate that Outplayer is this good yet free, so I would like to give my money to its author. Infuse forces users to subscribe to premium just to play .mkv and I don’t like this approach. Keep up the good work, Stephen, I appreciate what you’ve done with Outplayer so far.

Amazing but could really benefit from external subtitles
This app is pretty much everything I’ve been looking for on an iOS/iPadOS video player. I bought the paid upgrade without any hesitation. Super clean UI, integration with the Files app, supports Open In so no copies of videos, etc. The ONLY thing that still keeps me on VLC sometimes is the lack of external subtitles support. I’d love to be able to load my own subtitles, or to download them from the internet for whatever video I have open!

Gets most things right BUT
This is a simple Video player / Library that gets things right such as import/folder organization, play on external display. BUT it pick a random frame for video thumbnail instead of poster art/icon as in Files app. All my ripped movies have nice poster art that shows up in Files. Why not here? … Also could not find a way to copy files into the app in Files (no folder). Hope dev fixes these issues then I would GLADLY pay for it!

Cool passion project! Has one annoying limitation
Really cool to see a solo dev release something that works so well! It plays any video file you throw at it and has a simple interface that is reminiscent of the interface provided by Netflix/Prime Video. I like the simplicity, but it has a bug/missing feature that's very frustrating. For some videos I play it either plays them with a black border all around or it scales them up so some video to cut off. There's no way to scale them to "Aspect Fit", that is, scale them to the largest size where one edge of the video hits the edge of the screen and none of the video is obscured. (iPhone X, and a video with 1920x816 dimensions) Also I wish it supported external subtitles but that's probably just me. And Chromecast support would be amazing. I also think that "prefer landscape" should be the default. Cool app!

Seriously?
This, so called developer, still has not fixed, probably doesn’t know how. Outplayer’s continues to play the video, while paused, and the app is put in the background. What’s weird is when the app is put back in the foreground, the displayed image is still paused but showing it’s current position in the playback. I didn’t know somebody could screw something up that bad. Still limited features. Also, Outplayer will sometimes continue playing the audio even though yhe video was closed forcing me to shutdown Outplayer. I need to start looking for another ideo player. iPhone 12 Idiot Operating System 17.5.1.

Impressive
Amazing progress so far as a video player and certainly a standout option amongst others on iOS. Excellent implementation of mpv. I would definitely like to see video/folder sorting options and folder navigation, more network playback options (e.g. DLNA, linking with services like Google Drive), and perhaps an in-app URL browser to use mpv for web videos!

Great video player
Outplayer is simple and stable, its got the features I need, and it offers me privacy by not collecting any data. Thank you to the developer for choosing not to harvest my data. Glad to pay for the advanced version. This is replacing VLC Player and Infuse which I had been using for the past few years.

We’re this close to greatness!
The app that you’ve made is amazing by all means. Minimalistic, Smooth playback of videos, It has the option of swapping audio and subtitles but it is lacking in my opinion one feature that makes it a bit of a laggard against other apps similar to it (which VLC has). That would be the option to CHROMECAST it to a smart tv. I think that’s the only feature lacking in it that stops it from making it an amazing app!

Plays video from USB drive!!!
Oh my god I went through about 6 or 7 different video apps until I found one with this BASIC functionality, and it works perfectly here. I paid for the pro version immediately after finding this out. I don’t even need the pro features, I just wanted to support the Developer. Thank you!

Simple and fast, ALMOST perfect
This is perfect, does everything that it needs to do. Well, ALMOST everything. One key feature that is missing is the Atmos. I played atmos content and yet, the phone won’t output as atmos when wearing AirPods. Comes out as stereo. Other than that, I think the app is perfect. It does indeed play in HDR and any video formats. Would recommend.

An absolutely perfect player
I did not think any other player would be better than nplayer or VLC. However Outplayer has proved me wrong. It is the best player I have seen in a very very long time. For the next version I would request playback speed to be made variable in 0.1 increment.
