I subscribe to the press herald on line because like today, my physical paper copy hasn’t arrived yet, and it is 9AM on Sunday morning. It is not uncommon to leave for work during the week, unable to read the paper paper because it arrived later or never. I may be old school, but I prefer the crinkle of the page and seeing what news is above or below the fold over a digital, scrollable version. This may be a first world problem, but I do believe that the framers of our Constitution saw a free press as fundamental to our democracy. Yes, there are particular challenges to producing newspapers in this day and age. I for one, wish it could be reliably delivered.
I’m still getting use to it, but I like the utility of the new website. The addition of the regional traffic is fantastic. I know I can get that elsewhere, but it is a great service right there with the weather, which has been part of the local paper since the dawn of weather...featured in the local paper. Only suggestion is to add something on the front face to make us laugh. We need to laugh more.
I love the app. However, when I tap a headline on the main page, it frequently brings up the article just above the one I want. The error occurs roughly half the number of times I use the app, and it has persisted for months. I’ve carefully watched while testing the problem, and can rule out inaccurate tapping. Even when I clearly tap near the bottom of the chosen headline, the article above comes up instead. This error has only been noticed on the app’s default main page and I’ve never seen it occur on other iPhone apps.
I feel fortunate to live in the State of Maine for many reasons. One of the reasons is the quality of journalism that is provided by Portland Press Herald. From Ray Routhier to the Maine Millenial, the content will not disappoint and helps me feel connected to the state I was born and raised in. Keep up the good work. You are all vastly underpaid and my subscription does not reflect how valuable you are to me.
Couldn’t get through the day without it! We in Maine are so fortunate to have great coverage of local and state news as well as National and World delivered to our door and available online. Thanks to all the people who make this possible. Couldn’t do with out it for sure!
Is it possible for your web developer to have the type of articles that a reader prefers to click on to read be “suggested” and made available for future reading? Is there a way to include a “Search” function? To find any text throughout the entire website newspaper?
I have read the Portland Press since moving to Maine 13 years ago. It has great coverage of Maine news and also provides good national coverage. I also like the nature and literature coverage. We have discovered many great hiking trails and Maine authors. Thank you for helping us to learn more about the state
As an app to sort the laundry it is fine, but for reading the news it is disabled. I usually wind up resorting to their “ePaper”. That has its challenges too, but at least I can more easily see what I want to read
App has become unusable. Any attempt to open a story brings a full page ad. Close the ad and the story closes too, returning to the story index. This glitch should be fixed.
Why don’t you recognize my device, instead of having me have to login so often? If login in required why not provide the option to login using device password?
I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the Press Herald as a paper. I’d rate it a 4 or 5 stars as such. I also would have rate the electronic edition the same before the change in format. I find it hard to quickly scan it to find the articles I want. Please offer the old format back.
I can no longer use this app. When I try to open an article, a message pops up telling me that I’ve read the maximum number of ‘free’ articles and indicates that I need to log in to read more. The problem is that when I sign in, I get an error message. This, despite having reset my password multiple times and verifying my correct log in information by calling Customer Service @ The Press Herald. Useless app to me if I can’t read what’s there...
ez nav, no bugs, clear ui. one thing on the wish list: the new ios allows larger icons with previews. see nyt app as example. would be nice to have that function for PPH
I am a PPH print & digital subscriber. I start the morning with my coffee, PPH app and a fully 100% charged phone. By the time I’m ready to get up, my phone is in the 60% charged range. Nothing else has changed. I also prefer the prior layout. So I could easily scroll through headlines. I can live with the format change. But the battery drain will cause me to go elsewhere.
i’ve been reading the paper for over 10 years using the app the last five years. My biggest gripe is it seems like it’s one-sided coverage. Mostly negative towards anyone with traditional conservative values and Rosie, Beautiful happy coverage for anyone with today’s more progressive liberal values. I simply want to hear the truth and be able to make an honest informed decision about issues.
Why isn’t there a search option? Almost every app I have has a search option. Being a newspaper app, you would think there would be one. I’m not going to go through every article to find the one I'm looking for. Guess I’ll stick with google and forget this app.
The recent update on this app made it even more worthless. At least on the old version, I could read the obituaries without a subscription. Really, I thought helping people when someone passes was part of the service aspect of a newspaper. Now you have to pay to run an obituary that no one sees unless they pay too. That's the height of hypocrisy.
I can’t even log in and trying to change password ida dysfunctional nightmare. Way over the top security keeping me out when the nytimes is easy and automatic. I hate the PPH too expensive for difficult to use digital snd forget about delivery! Pathetic local paper with very little to offer other than Bill Nimitz in a class by himself.
I use the app on my IPad and find that there is a flaw in the scrolling feature. I can only scroll through about half the articles when there is a hiccup and the screen is reset to the top article again. Consistent throughout the various sections of the paper. Very frustrating.
It is impossible to search the paper, find an article, or read the paper on the app. I was reminded of this when I opened it for the first time in forever to try and find an article from yesterday. I will not be re-subscribing since I am never at an actual computer, and I cannot afford to keep the print version of the paper.
I find myself ask basic questions about a story that never are answered by their articles. This is often caused because the can only write about their a agenda and not full facts of a story. But they are the game in this part of the stage.
Am I missing something or is there no search function? That seems a critical feature of any news app. Plus, no app updates for nine months. Looks like this is not a priority for the Press Herald.
It is fine once you open a story but keeps refreshing and returning to the top while you read headlines. Also the search never works so you have to try to scan headlines to find the article you want to read.
So tired of story after story about same old same old topics. I am happy and welcoming to new. Mainers and work to help them personally. BUT there is actually more going on in maine. Kinda sad that the best stories about maine these days are in my morning NY Times. Please remind me. What is the value proposition of the PPH/MST…?
Where did the newspaper go? I used to be able to read the newspaper on my tablet, but this new PPH app is just a collection articles. It’s as if a coder and an MBA got together to turn a digital newspaper into a mishmash of clickbait. Bring back the old app!
i signed up for this paper a week ago w my debit card. (which was charged.) i live in south portland, although that should not matter. and every time i try to read an article, i am told by the website, i have reached my limit of free articles. it doesn’t matter if i go through the app or an email. this is amateur. it’s messy kid stuff. it’s straight up bs. (i went to j school at unc-ch and this should not be happening! it’s not like the guys in charge of subscriptions require talent of any kind!) i’m going to cancel my subscription and stick w the nyt, wapo, huffpo et al. tamson mackinnon
What’s with the new format, folks? I used to be able to scroll quickly through Press Herald news for a fast local update. Now only 4 stories appear, followed by big distracting sections with large graphics that seem unrelated. What good is that? I’m not a fan and now check PPH rarely.
For the last several days, the app keeps crashing. Normally good, but impossible to use with it continually crashing after being open after 5-20 seconds.
It’s impossible to find articles in this app. There is no search function, and it’s frustrating to have to navigate section by section looking for a particular story.
It’s not news it's an opinion piece you start off with a bias and you end with a bias and all the way through you are biased please just report the facts and let us draw the conclusions don’t tell us what to think also your app for reading it digitally is cumbersome and clunky please make improvements
I’ve read all my free articles and need to log in to read more??? Thankfully the real news channel apps in Maine aren’t this cheap and pathetic. THEY can actually spell right too. Guess it’s bye bye PPH. What a crock. Thanks for nothing as usual. Just like when I worked for you.
The app is not intuitive, and the search feature does not work. I don’t see why the app is even in the App Store. The developer should either have an app to be proud of, or no app at all.
It is annoying to use the app particularly the scroll feature. Portland area coverage is good but not the rest of the state. I got better state coverage from BDN and I’ll probably go back to that paper.
I have a hard time navigating the new version of the Press Herald. I have called and been unable to get anyone on the phone. I left my number and no one called me back. I will cancel my online subscription. I used to read it every am. Relocated Portlander
Almost typical of e-versions. Never get the full effect of the paper’s reporting and stories. For an example of a newspaper that’s figured out the way to do an e-version, check the Santa Fe NewMexican. It’s superb.
I really enjoy the app and reading the articles, but every time I go to a different app the Press Herald app closes and loses the article I was reading. It's really a pain.
Stiff, limited news presentation has room for improvement.
As someone who admires the news reporting and energy of the Press Herald, the online app is a disappointing, dumbed down translation - both in content and visually. Lots of room for improvement.
