This app is kind of a mess. It looks good, but most of it simply doesn’t work. First of all, you CANNOT ROLL DAMAGE. That’s a pretty ridiculous oversight. Apparently you have to open the character sheet in your browser and set it to roll damage automatically every time you make an attack roll. Next, the spell list may as well not exist. You can’t see which spells are currently prepared or change that. The fields for things like range, duration, target etc are all empty. And the DCs listed are incorrect, because it just uses your base spellcasting DC for all of them and disregards any custom modifiers on the spell, meaning it may as well only have the base spellcasting DC at the top and not even try to list individual DCs. The inventory may as well not exist either, because you can’t change anything. You can’t even delete items or change how many you have. You also have to click an Edit button before changing your money for literally no reason. Finally Resources section, much like the Spell section, just doesn’t work. Most of the fields on my character were bugged out with a generic label and 0/0 amount. It also doesn’t integrate the Rest buttons from the character sheet, so you have to manually set all the amounts every time.
Was looking into this app for a friend who has a 16 year old computer that struggles with roll 20. Thinking this would be a good alternative for them to do the game on mobile. However the app does support all character sheets the issue is that it really only works with character sheets related to dnd 5e over character sheets like Pathfinder, Starfinder, Etc. Since we are running a pathfinder game guess we’ll have to try something else until they can add a working pathfinder character sheet to the app. If you’re looking for a dnd 5e game this app works good but if you’re running anything else its best to look elsewhere. Another suggestion is the ability to customize the brightness with light/dark mode as a colorblind DM I struggled reading the black text on a dark gray background with white fill in bubbles. If by making the fill in bubbles a medium gray and the text white as you keep the dark gray background it could work but as of right now its not very accessible to those who have colorblindness or other vision struggles as it doesn’t stand out enough.
I really wanted to love this app. I was excited to be able to view and use my character sheet on a different screen so I could use my computer screen exclusively for video chat and the vtt. Unfortunately, certain information from the character sheet may not appear in the app. In my case, I play a wizard in a 5e campaign, which is a prepared spell caster. Unfortunately, the app’s spell list doesn’t have any indication of which spells are currently prepared. My options were to keep the sheet open in Roll20 (which I had hoped to avoid) or write my prepared spells down on scratch paper. Both are fine, but don’t have the ease or convenience I was hoping for. I would love to see unprepared spells greyed out, or have the check marks visible. This being said, the interface is super intuitive, and it works well without lags or glitching thus far. The aesthetic is really clean and more visually appealing than playing on the browser version. I really *like* the app, but it doesn’t function the way I need it to at the moment. If I find out I’m missing something, or if updates are made that fix this, I would love to rate this 5 stars.
Pretty good so far, with lots of room for improvement
I was a bit skeptical of the app when I read the reviews, but I decided to download it and test it out for myself before I wrote it off. It’s surprisingly smooth and works well so far. Some of the formatting looks really good and clean, like the Features and Traits section, while others, like my Treasure section, are just a massive wall of text that doesn’t keep the spacing and formatting that I have on the desktop character sheets. My sheet is also missing a few resources that are important for me to keep track of, so hopefully that will get fixed or translated over soon. All in all, it’s a pretty decent app if all you need is to look at your character sheet. There isn’t a way to see a map or any dm handouts or npc character sheets yet that I’m aware of, and I also can’t edit my character sheet with the detail there is on the desktop version. I looked at the little voting portal that’s on the app and people are already putting forth ideas that could/should be added, so I’m excited to see the coming updates that this app will get.
I am just getting back into D&D and a buddy of mine uses this on web browser. I saw it on IOS App Store and thought it would operate the same since I don’t have a computer. I can not edit anything about my character on the app. It looks great and is easy to navigate from one spot of the character sheet to the next but thats all it can do unless I am doing something wrong but I did not see anything to suggest I was. But all is not lost I can use Roll20 on my iPad for the most part through the web browser even though it said safari was not supported. I have not been able to figure out what features don’t work but I can edit my character, see the map, see chat, etc. Using safari I will be able to play. Some more functionality and feature are on the way I am sure but it is far from a usable app to play. I will update my review if I find out its me and if it get an update that changes things! All in all I like the way it looks and hope for more to come!
When I first downloaded this app I was able to login with my credentials on my iPad. Now that I’m getting ready to start a new campaign with friends all of a sudden I can’t login via the app because the keyboard on my iPad won’t pop up here for this app I restarted my iPad and did all the necessary software checks for my iPad and it wasn’t my iPad. So I deleted the app from my iPad then download it just to make sure there wasn’t a glitch but I’m still having the same issue to where the keyboard won’t appear for me to log into the app of my Roll20 account. This needs to be fixed ASAP
I’m a DM and was hoping for an easy way to read adventure compendium text, like I can in the D&D Beyond mobile app. No such luck here. You can search for listings and things, but there doesn’t seem to be any way to access the module content you pay for on Roll 20. This is greatly disappointing since the value of being able to read the books when out and about, without having to lug around a laptop, would be huge. But also because reading adventure text on the Roll 20 website is a truly awful experience. The 5E books cost the same as they do on D&D Beyond, but offer no convenient way to just go to the book you bought and read it comfortably. You are forced to create a game, then launch the game, then find the book and read it in a game window. Sorry to say, this app does nothing to offer a better experience either. While powerful, Roll 20 continues to be one of the least user-friendly VTTs, catering mostly to power users who want to hack it and program their own stuff but leaving most users with a bewildering UI.
I learned that this was a thing through a random survey, and I’m glad I did! This is just about all I could ask for and more! I know it early and things are obviously in the works, but some things to add that jump out at me: VTT, so players may view a prepared battlefield. Compendium so they may see all accessible spells and information, as this goes a long way for them to find things quick versus flipping through all our books. I’m sure there are other things, but this app is already headed in the right direction! I would say that if this could be advertised more, it would go a long way to getting more feedback and getting this great app in people’s hands!
I really like the app & it’s very helpful & easy to use when I play D&D & play my character. For some reason, I can’t cast my spells unless if it’s in my combat & some of the spells that I have; Example: Sleep, Command, & Spare the Dying are spells I can’t cast because they’re NOT in combat & Sacred Flame, Guilding Bolt, & Spiritual Weapon are spells I can cast because they ARE in my combat. I can’t cast them when I use the app & have to use the website’s D&D sheet. I can’t find a button to hit for normal, advantage, or disadvantage & would have to use the website’s D&D sheet. Other than that, it’s pretty cool & I like it! I’ll Update the review if I can find anything else that I missed.
I am new to gaming. New. Tried this app. Literally going in circles. I tried the mob app on my phone. I tried the website. I kept trying to create a new character. Neither worked for me. The Save Changes wouldn’t work. I watched the tutorial several times to make sure I was right. I was right. No luck. This is a horribly designed app. It is not user friendly at all. If a new user can’t use it then how on this earth will you get a new audience or customer base. I wish I could give it a zero. Is this supposed to be a game play enhancement? If you aren’t having fun before you even start then why would anybody want to use this abortion of an app?
The app looks nice and I was hopeful I could use this for in-person dnd instead of dnd beyond since I’ve always found roll20 sheets way better for customization with homebrew and ease of use with the compendium and charactermancer, however the ability to modify the sheet using the app is completely absent and a total dealbreaker. To iterate, this would be a dealbreaker for vtt as well given if I’m using the character sheet on a tablet or phone I don’t want to be forced to open the desktop version to make spell list, inventory, or level up tweaks. These features are a must-add for the app to be at all a helpful application.
I saw this advertised in the campaign The Unsleeping City, from dimension 20. This isn’t anything against Dimension 20 and their advertising, Brennan did a hella job, I downloaded this app because of him. That being said, I expected it to be at least intuitive. I went to create a character, and got sent down a goose chase that never had a satisfying ending. At this point just use dnd beyond, or make your own sheet.
As the title states, I’ve tried to use the app at the latest version, 1.2.2. Build 175 and all I’m getting is an app that has nothing working. I don’t know if the app is discontinued or not, but there’s no options to create character sheets, no options to do anything. Choosing Dnd or ALL Games didn’t do anything. There’s just a blank-ish page with “tips on getting started” but nothing else. There’s a search bar, but that just give search results and still nothing else. In the menu, there’s a “welcome user” message and a sign out button. I am lost. Is this an app, or just a placeholder?
I want to say first and foremost I am the biggest fan of Roll20. I’ve been using it for DND for years and have ran dozens of long campaigns through it. I have a long list of complaints of their website and I have to say I’m not surprised that this app doesn’t work. When trying to select a character in your campaign all it does is give you tokens that say 100 feet on them. I may be using this wrong but I can’t find anyone that can tell me otherwise. This is why I’ve started to move towards FoundryVTT. I love the Roll20 community and I hope that they fix this soon.
This app is a godsend, thank you devs. This is my first review being an App Store consumer since it’s iteration. Everything in this app is pure gold. Please add bio and charactermancer functionality! Being able to peep the currently active page for players at the token layer would be next level. Thank you for making this companion app a reality!
Functionality is largely there, but hit point editing needs to allow for typing in + or - numbers, like in the VTT. Otherwise, take 30 points of damage, you have to hit the minus button 30 times. The other thing I was looking for was the chat log. Would be very handy, but perhaps that’s harder to implement.
The app is a good addition to roll 20. The negative is that Roll 20 charechtermancer creator is an out dated dinosaur that is not user friendly compared to platforms like DND beyond that places roll 20 as the worst VTT for DND and other games. But if your going to use Roll 20 over one of the far superior options get the Mobil app just not as good as the other options out there
I used the app for session 1 tonight, and it was perfect for keeping my character at hand for rolls that were shared with the rest of my party. Combat and role play were easy from wit just the app open.
Honestly this app does what it should gives rolls and shows pretty much whole sheet. Does need better work moving around on it between every part. It should have an input toggle for rolls instad of just constant clicking to get X amount rolls.
They need to drop serious cash to make this work. It seems cobbled together and it barely works making to go back to the desktop version in order to do what the app cannot. Plus it gives no real indication on what you must do on the desktop side in order to make it work. Roll20, save your reputation. Take this out of the App Store hire someone to fully develop and app for you then come back when it’s working.
The character sheet is useless on the web app. Our DM uses Beyond for that because that is what they do well. What roll 20 does well is everything else - the table-top map, the chat thread, the journal entries. Where are these key features? The developer absolutely needs to toss this garbage and redesign the app based on the strengths of the platform - not is greatest weakness. You are featuring the worst of what you have to offer.
Ran into an issue where half of our characters’ spells would not appear on the companion app despite having spells on their character sheet in the browser. Hopefully the devs will patch out this bug and ones like it. Being able to do any ability check, attack roll, etc from the app is super convenient.
I had a lot of problems before, some seem to be because of elements in our game that caused character sheet issues. Still no way to turn on things like sneak attack easily but I use it every session now
One of the first things that I encountered on logging in was that my games show up but I am the creator/GM. I should not have to choose a character as I have control of all characters as I have within the roll20 desktop. This app could have good potential if there was more development for use on tablets such as an iPad.
I downloaded this thinking I could do Roll20 on the go. This app is literally just character sheets. You can’t edit the sheet in the app, nor can you make new ones. You can’t see maps, move tokens, etc. Non-5e sheets aren’t compatible, so if you play Pathfinder or something this app isn’t functional. What’s even the point? This app is a waste of space don’t even download it. It’s not worth it.
When I log in with my account it doesn’t even show my name, just “Hi, “ and blank. I can see the games I’m in, but when clicking then it says I “Have no access to any characters”. Ok, fine, app is broken. So I go to the website on the phone, log in, it sees my name, characters and games, but when I try to enter the game it just sits there not showing the game screen, hanging. Really? Broken everywhere? Not sure how to proceed then…
When I loaded into the app, it gives me the option to select a character sheet. But when trying to load the character sheet, it just gives me the message that this feature is coming soon. Why put on your website that you can use character sheets on the mobile app when you physically cannot? Fix that.
This app is a hollow shell of nothing with absolutely no way to do anything. Literally the only thing you can do is download it, log in and out, then delete it. There’s no other anything, it does literally nothing. The fact that this is even on the market to download is a mystery that needs to be solved and removed. 0 stars if possible for 0 content,
I use this app on my iPhone with minimal technical issues (though there are certainly some missing features ) but on my iPad I just keep getting "internal server error" when I try to log in. Super disappointing.
Ive been using roll20 for years and I was excited to see it as an app, but when I logged into my roll20 account and opened a character of mine, it deleted all of his stats. It for some reason deleted his stats on all versions of roll20 and it deleted my other friend’s characters stats and spells. Do NOT download this app until this problem has been fixed.
Really enjoying the simple interface the app provides. If they added the ability to see the map being shown as in the desktop version, I’d be very happy.
It’s fully updated and I have space on my device, but I can’t get anything to do… anything at all. Imagine any feature that this app claims to have and then imagine none of them doing anything. It’s not like I didn’t give it a chance, I have attempted to use it for weeks now but to no avail.
Just downloaded this app, logged in, and there’s no functionality for 5e games. I can switch to pathfinder games, and get a warning that it’s not optimized for them. I can also see some intro links to online help. But that’s it. I see no way to create any 5e content, not even character creation or dice rolling. What’s the point? Not ready for prime time!
The app is so broken, I can’t even log in. I didn’t try creating a new account through the app, but I also shouldn't have to if I have an existing account. I did click on create account, however, and then i scrolled to the bottom and clicked log in on there, but that didn’t work either
I was genuinely excited but when I tried to use the app it completely deleted the stats of every item on my sheet. I was extremely disappointed and slightly upset because now I have to basically remake my entire character because this app has a bug that is erasing Information.
We all know Roll20 on mobile browsers is awful, so I really hoped this would be better. Sometimes I just want to be able to quickly look at things for different campaigns on my phone.
Managing gold, silver etc is a little tedious and it’s a bummer that I can’t trigger 3D Dice for players in a browser… I would use this app to run my character sheet and have the map screen on a laptop if I could but we love seeing the 3D dice roll and this app not triggering that is a bit of a let down. Also, the dice roller doesn’t seem to display the natty roll, just the modified result. But I look forward to seeing it improve!
Why is there no option to just roll dice? This is the most basic thing any DnD app should have, and this app, literally called Roll20, doesn’t have a function to just roll a d20?
I was really excited to find this app, but I am so disappointed that I can’t use it. For whatever reason when I try to open any of my campaigns the app tells me it’s opening the campaign and doesn’t do anything, which makes the app effectively useless
The app seems good in theory and I’d love to be able to have my character sheet on my iPad for easy reference but I can’t even open the sheet. It just loads up a blank white screen and there’s no way for me to refresh.
As other people have mentioned, I really wanted to love this app, however, it either fell short of expectations or completely failed as a whole. If you need to use a virtual table top (VTT), you are going to have to do so from the website — preferably on a PC or Mac.
I love roll20, we use it every session. However the app version doesn’t load anything at all and I have to instead pull it up through my browser. I just don’t see the point of the app if it doesn’t do anything.
Can't level up. Can't see the game itself. Unless you're there to play with your character and have a second screen to look at, good luck doing anything else
I re-downloaded this app after not having it for awhile, and despite me putting in the right email and password it fails to login every time. I remember this app being terrible, but I also remembered it being usable.
The app does not want to correctly read passwords on new install to my iPad. Have reset and tested on PC browser website and works fine. Have even reset password and will not function.
This app doesn’t let you sign in to your already existing account. Could access my Roll20 account on my computer but can’t on the app no change to account or passwords. rendering it utterly useless.
What good is an app if I can’t login? Every time I try to sign into my already existing account it tells me there is an “error authenticating”. I tried changing my password, but the password is correct. It just refuses to let me sign in.
I can’t use this app because there wasn’t a tutorial. It’s not intuitive at all. I think it’s also glitchy because I joined a campaign on Roll20’s website, but it won’t show up on the app
