New update is worse
I was getting used to the last update and then it was changed again. This update is clumsy and slow to load. I don’t like the arrows you have to click (sometimes several times) to navigate to the desired view. The font on my iPad is very small and if I make it larger it doesn’t carry from one article to the next. Thus, in article view I have to change the font in every single article, and before I scroll down, because the font option is only at the top. The font option in the settings does not work. Also, the photos in article view don’t include the captions, so I have to switch back to page view if I want to read them. It’s clumsy and ineffective. Surely you can do better than this. I’d take the last update over this one. Please fix this app and make it user friendly!!

The newest Union-Tribune current app is really good, but…..
This SD U-T app has improved a great deal in recent weeks but the previous editor/owner’s version had two excellent features missing from this app: 1–the ability to text a copy of an article to share, & 2–the ability to select text to “look up, translate, or see” further details. Hopefully, these two soon will be added to an updated version of the app!

Great app
I’ve never experienced any technical issues or bugs with this app, as some people have indicated. I do like that the newest version allows me to zoom in on the text and maps on the weather page again!

E paper
Sure do not like the new format you have recently introduced. Very hard to go through everything to find where you have put the crossword pages. If I hit epaper I have to log in . Half the time it tells me my password is incorrect. Loved it when you just had it set up like you would if you got the paper. James Schaller, 34 Antigua Ct, Coronado, Ca.

Too many forced updates!!
The UT is a fine paper and local media is very important, but the mandatory updates are way too frequent! The epaper was way easier to access a few months ago, and why are logins constantly required? I’ve had the New York Times app for near on a decade, and I don’t think I’ve been forced to update or log in the entire time, save for when I get a new phone. If the grey lady can do it, why can’t the UT?

Cheapening the online experience
For months I’ve enjoyed accessing the ePage Cover of the SDUT on my lower priced online access account , until a week ago when that access was blocked unless I pay for a full subscription. I don’t read the SDUT often enough to merit paying for a full subscription. Any more cheapening of the experience will have me biding farewell to the Union Trib.

Jumps around
Every time I’m forced to update this app, I hope this problem will be fixed - it makes a click sound and then jumps to other sections on its own and you have to a scroll back to where you were. It’s really annoying. Please fix.

Undo everything you’ve done the last three years
Every update makes it worse. After latest “updates”, the app now — Will not allow sharing of a single article, if I try to share it sends the recipient a link to the whole paper — Will not allow me to read articles unless I navigate to eNewspaper, clicking anywhere else gives a permission error — Snaps back to page 1 whenever I finish reading any article, instead of keeping me where I was — Large increase in the # of popup adds… on the paper I already paid a subscription for Garbage. Fire whomever redesigned the app and revert to the old version (which was bad but at least usable)

HATE the update
Roll it back! Horrible format. I want to see the whole page and swipe to get to the next page. Just give me a list of the sections, I don’t need to see each page. I also don’t need to see all the past issues. If I want a past issue I will go to the archive. Why would you mess with something that worked!

Upside down today
Like many people I charge my devices overnight. This morning, the newspaper section would only work when my iPad Pro was orientated so the power cord was down, which does not work well when in bed or a recliner. The device is too heavy to be constantly held in your hand. One does not want to rest the device on the cord. Please fix.

Got dumped
This app although very useful when it works dumped me after 5 months into a prepaid one year subscription. The IT guy agreed I am a paid up subscriber but couldn’t fix the App to recognize that. He did provide a way to access thru my web browser so the contract has been honored.

SD trib is dead. Good riddance. Buy a real news.
Oh. And the latest authentication on the Apple store app will NOT EVEN ALLOW YOU to login. Complete waste of time. Broken app. Useless “news”, unless you like to hear gossip about Padres baseball team. Dont waste your money on this app. So, another working app forces me to update, for no apparent reason. And the app is no longer working or available. The app uses a separate useless third party app to “authenticate” my account. But it flat does not work. Absolutely worthless. No, i dont need to be contacted by anybody. It is YOU, app owner, that needs a working app. You dont need to fix it. You should just give up, and stop what you are doing. As soon as you read this. I would ban you from the Apple app store, but non-functioning app paid for with real money is not against TOS. At this time. Another Apple loophole that should be changed. The website via a browser still lets me login. Showing me they have completely brain dead tech people working at their company. Which is no different than their “news” team, who repost social media releases from corporations and government as unchecked facts. Really. We can blame google for ruining news. But the biggest blame is on the news industry itself. Which still cannot use modern technology, and no longer reports news. There is no replacement. News is just propaganda at this point. Maybe it will be reinvented some time in the future when it is desired again. Good luck making life decisions based on social media and its so called “influencers”.

Recent Update is a Step Backwards
The recent update of the App for reading the San Diego Union Tribune on an iPad is very annoying and a big step backwards in ease of reading the daily e-paper. 1. Why are there pop up adds, when I pay for the privilege of having access to the paper. 2. While scrolling though the articles on each page, this new version is hyper-sensitive to the touch to where it thinks I am tapping an article to be read, when I am only scrolling down the page to review headlines. So whenever I touch the screen, that article pops up, and I need to then close it, to continue browsing the page. 3. The old app had a very easy index to bring up sections of the paper, such as Main, Local, Business, Sports. Now I have to select Pages, and then find the grayed out section I desire to read, and then select Sports, then select page D-1, then close the pages menu, only to then have to close the pop-up add. Can you make reading the paper any more annoying? The answer is YES!

Works well but needs improvement
I used the prior app on my old iPad, and was very surprised to find a totally different app when I got my new iPad. At first, I thought it was terrible, but after using it for a few days I'm finding it to be better in many ways. Once I found how to get to the eNewspaper (touch the tiny lines on the top right side of the screen - not at all user-friendly or intuitive!), I was happy with the features available. The eNewpaper opens in an internet browser (Safari), which is unlike the prior app, but that's ok once you get used to it. I did have to experiment with touching the different buttons, so the user interface needs polishing. Also, when I expanded the print (pinch to zoom) it became fuzzy and did not clear up, so that's a bug that needs to be fixed. I'm hoping future updates will be coming soon!

Worst app ever
This app is terrible. If I could give it negative stars I would. Every time they update the app it’s not an improvement. It makes it worse. It is at the point where it’s almost impossible to read the paper without getting kicked out of the e-newspaper multiple times. When it kicks you back to the homepage and you try the e-newspaper again it takes you right back to page A1 instead of taking you back to where you were at. Half the time you try getting to where you were with the Sections button you end up right back at the homepage. This app is a very frustrating experience. I’m going back to reading the e-newspaper via the UT website.

Online Version Great
Thankful for the online version of this newspaper. I have macular degeneration so reading the small newsprint was challenging. Now I can easily read the paper on my iPad and make the print larger by spreading my fingers. The added Los Angeles Calendar section is an added reward. The newspaper is still deliveredThursday thru Sunday. I would to have it stopped, and I have requested this several times to no avail.

Not useful on iPhone
While traveling, I use the SD Union-Tribune app to stay up-to-date on local news. I sometimes use the eNewspaper - which used to a PDF-like version of the printed newspaper. Since the newest app update, I can no longer use the app on my iPhone. Every time I try to enlarge a page and then move up-down while reading an article, the app refreshes and returns to the front page! Very frustrating! In addition, the app no longer allows me to change from portrait to landscape mode… which is helpful when using a smaller device. The app has gotten worse with this new update.

Continues to get worse
Every time they update this, the workability decreases. I have been a subscriber for over 30 years, and used the digital version as soon as it was introduced. But I finally gave up after their last “upgrade”. Not responsive, cumbersome, and when I called about the new issues, the rep really wasn’t very well informed about it. His best guess was to reboot it, and he had no idea how to deal with the issues. I cancelled my subscription, it just isn’t worth the high blood pressure trying to get it to work.

HORRIBLE change to this app!
In addition to the complaints about pop-up ads on a PAID subscription, difficult navigation, constantly getting kicked back to page A1, etc, this new app substantially drains the iPad battery, when compared with the previous PDF style version! If I wanted a dynamic experience, I would use the UT website or main app. When I’m wanting to read the newspaper, the PDF version was a preferred and “gold standard” for us. I can’t even easily send an article to my email anymore! I HATE this app and it only adds to my growing frustration with the UT!

Sadly lacking
This app used to enlarge articles when clicked, likewise photos and comics/puzzles. Quit working again a few weeks back. Like many other reviewers, I will likely cancel this paper and find alternatives in the online news apps. Too bad as local news is still something some customers want.

Very annoying app
There are a couple of things that are very annoying: 1) I often don’t finish reading the paper until the next day. But instead of being able to pick up where I left off, the app opens to the front page of the current day’s paper 2) I like to read the paper like a normal paper - I don’t want to open the whole article and see only that one article. But the app is so sensitive to touch that it constantly does this. It should require a double tap to do this.

Liked old app better
As prior reviewer notes, I to updated my Ipad and the old app that is an exact replica of the newspaper appears to no longer be available. Instead in this app you can go to the upper right hand menu and click eNewpaper which boots you over to Safari and downloads the newspaper into Safari. Thats ok if you have wifi but say your getting on a plane, the old app kept the entire newspaper available to read offline in newspaper format but Safari doesn't do that.

Unlimited digital is not unlimited
Spent over an hour on the phone with customer service attempting to link my iOS subscription to the web access. Articles I get via email or social media on my desktop should be readable with the unlimited subscription according to their marketing materials. They kept insisting it was apple’s responsibility since I subscribed through the app. I was also told to subscribe via the web not the app (which coincidentally is twice as expensive). Passing the buck. They were unable to figure it out but told me they would look into it. Will update my review if they resolve the problem.

Great idea poorly executed
The basic idea is great, but I cannot remember a day in the last year where there was not some kind of problem. Tapping on an article should open it in its own window. This is great because you can scale the font and makes it easier to read. If an article spans pages it all should show in this window. So, some articles will not open at all. Some open blank. Some open but do not include all the text (frequently stopping at the end of that “page”). Some are missing some or all of the pictures. The web version is generally less problematic, but often the same issues occur on the web version. Customer service is basically non responsive with the standard reboot your iPad and reload the app as a solution. This never works. I love the sports coverage, especially Kevin Acee on the Padres beat but I’d dump this app in a minute if there was an alternative.

Harder to use
It now takes more steps to access the e-newspaper. You have to tap the Sections icon (huh? Why would enewspaper be here?), hunt for the enewspaper link, then tap today’s paper, then sometimes have to tap to dismiss page index. And they still haven’t fixed the zoom on Sunday comics. Well they did make the error message more cryptic. Tapping on a comic used to just say “please try later”; now it says “Failed to parse article”!

Horrible new app with pop up ads. the last straw for us.
We’ve subscribed to the UT for over 40 years throughout all of the owner changes, but the latest app “update” might just be the final straw. It is slow to load, much harder to navigate, and full of pop up ads. We want to support local journalism but this new format is making it nearly impossible. For the record, we maybe older subscribers, but are experienced digital readers, and it’s not just getting used to new technology…it’s just a poorly designed app.

Works OK with a few exceptions
I like the app and it seems to work well. The exception is if I download a paper, and then try to read it the next day, the app gets confused and keeps trying to download and read today’s paper. This situation is exasperated when offline. I reported this issue and the support was ludicrous. They asked “what browser am I using” when I specifically said it’s about this app. Worthless support.

No offline version
UT confirmed to me that they no longer support the Tecnavia App (the original one). Really annoying that they would stop supporting it WITHOUT informing their subscribers. Please support the original app. I can no longer download the paper to read offline when I am flying or somewhere without internet access. The download option in the e-newspaper does not fix this, it is buggy and often needs to reload which is impossible without internet connection.

Terrible App: Bring Back the Old One
I do not want to read the paper in a web browser, which does not allow offline reading when not connected to WIFI. I do not want to have to convert the edition to a .pdf file and then store it in iBooks where the functionality then becomes extremely limited. The old app worked so well. Why was it changed? I am on a trial subscription now and may not continue, given the hassle it is to read the digital paper.

New “Upgrade” is Terrible!!!
Since the new version, I can barely read the articles. They only blow up a little bit instead of like before when you could almost fill your screen with a single word. And now the screen orientation is locked in portrait mode - no more turning the phone to get a wide landscape view. The old version wasn’t great, but it was a thousand times better than this latest one!!!!!

No archive????
When I went to find an edition from a couple weeks ago, the app required me to update—and in process I had to agree to pretty much give away my entire life for access. Then I could not find any archive option. Already, with the old app, the archive had become very limited, just going back a few months. This is very annoying. I pay for a full subscription, including hard copy delivery.

6/24 review - worse still
Funny, I saw a review from 3 years ago saying every update was worse: the record continues! You are now almost forced into the stories they have selected:,it doesn’t seem all the stories are available, and certainly NOT chronologically. Harder to find the “enewspaper” version and scroll and select stories you want. But oh well!

Buggy Update
I updated this app for my iPad today. I found it hard to navigate to the E-News section since the tab on the bottom was no longer there. Unfortunately, this update looks more like the web version which gives me pause as to why I’d read the paper now in this app. Was I surprised to see pop-up ads as I navigated throughout the sections? Sadly, no. I’m sure you’ll get lots of complaints about the new/old interface. I also found it challenging to pinch and zoom an article in this new but not improved app. And the log in experience in order to access the updated app was not smooth considering that my Apple Keychain usually works flawlessly but not with this app.

Terrible piece of tripe!
The one thing I always looked forward to was reading the newspaper on the app. The new version took away the e newspaper and replaced it with a cheap version of articles. I could not locate “Today in History”, the Comics, the political cartoons or Dear Abby. This type of shenanigan is the reason newsprint is dying. This will force to give serious consideration to renewing my subscription! I hope others feel the same way that I do. RIP S.D. Union-Tribune!⚱️

newspaper freezes regularly on iPad and iPhone
Two calls in 3 days to customer service (long hold time) they recommended deleting app and reinstalling. That works until you start turning pages then it stops to say you don’t have a subscription and you have no where to click to prove that you do. Please make your app more reliable we want to read the on line newspaper daily.

Very bad app
I can usually read the paper if I click on the email version they send, but if I try to use the app it freezes so I can’t switch pages. The old app was great as it downloaded allowing me to read anytime without an internet connection. I can’t understand why the paper took a perfectly good app and made it so!!!! Bad. Just bring back the old app or get someone that fix the current one. Definitely allow downloading to read offline.

Every time I touch the screen it takes me back to page 1. The pop up adds are annoying and unnecessary since I pay for the union tribune and were forced to read the paper on the app. I am no longer able to increase the font size by “stretching” the print. I searched for a way to go back to the previous version but unable to do so. Very frustrating

Took a mediocre app and made it worse.
Amazing. A mediocre but usable app replaced by some deformed version from a programmer that obviously has no news app experience. I’d cancel but my wife likes local news even as she’s complains about how bad it is. Once I convince her of alternatives, Voice of San Diego, The Reader, etc, I hope to eliminate this abomination. Compared with my Washington Post app this is a disgraceful example of getting what you paid for and even if it was free they overpaid. Amateur day.

The e-newspaper section of the new app now inundates you with,pop-up ads. The is very annoying and was not the case in the old app. Also, the e-newspaper page does not completely fit on my iPad Pro page. Now, you have to scroll to see the whole page. Again.
