Pretty good.

Had a bit of a struggle getting linked to my account. Once I got in works fine. No problem finding my way through it. The app should mention that there is also a “Print Addition” app to download if readers prefer that format.

Crap App

I much preferred the old app. I liked the layout of the e-newspaper format. I love to read the news in a way that simulates a real physical newspaper. I appreciate how actual newspapers are organized; political, sports, financial sections, etc. I read the news on my iPad. The format for new e-newspaper on this devise is terrible. Way more cumbersome. In addition, I don’t like the “other” Home Screen choices where the newspaper chooses the main news stories for the reader. I’m literate, I’m capable of determining what’s important to me. Really, perhaps you should offer a second app that offers only the e-newspaper. I’m seriously considering canceling my subscription (Likely I will). For $20/month it’s annoying that my ability to simply choose my news format is so limited.

This is an Update??

I made the grave error of deleting my old VCStar app and now I’m stuck with your idea of Modernity. I would happily pay $20 for a download of the old app so I could get the proper use out of my $30/month sub. Now that my paper is MAILED to me ( I live a mile over the County line) I get Sunday, Monday and Tuesday on Thursday and Wednesday on Friday. So I HAVE to use your very poor excuse for am e-reader. I use the Washington Post, New York Times, L.A.Times and Honolulu Star-Advertiser with minimal trouble. Thank You for nothing.. Wally Close Carpinteria

So frustrating!

Why are there two different apps for this local newspaper? My husband was talking about an article he read yesterday, but I was unable to find it in the relevant section or with the almost completely useless search function, no matter what terms I tried. When he sent me a link, I had to install the other app, then wade through images of the pages until I found the headline. It makes no sense at all! We have been subscribers for over 40 years, but I almost never look at the paper any more because it makes me angry and sad trying to navigate the interface.

Great Local, National and World News Source

The app is so easy to use. I love that you can click on specific articles and forward them to someone else who might be interested. Even the comic strips! Always on my phone by around 4am, so can access today’s paper as soon as I wake up. Highly recommend.

Why?!?

I pay for a subscription to the newspaper, but every time I open the app, I get ads to buy a subscription. Also, I find I’m not allowed to read some articles, I get an error saying the article is only available to subscribers. I close the app, re-open and sometimes I get the article, but still sometimes not. What am I paying for if I can even read the news, who has time to play with signing in and out to read an article?!?

Very easy APP To navigate. Love it!

I’ve been a VC Star subscriber for a few years . I would normally received the hard copy in my porch. Now I prefer the online access and using this APP is the most easiest way to do it! I now just wake up , grab my cup of coffee, grab my iPad and enjoy the morning news.

Total Fraud

The Ventura County Star fraudulently renewed my subscription without consent or authorization. My promotional subscription expired in March 2022 and I made sure auto subscription was off. Then, in December 2022, they charged my iTunes account 9.99 without my consent or desire to subscribe. I’ve reached out to them numerous times with regard and they are totally ignoring my requests for cancellation and refund. Such a total fraud! I’m contacting the BBB with this matter as I am not going to let this go as they may hope.

Love the Star

I am old school as far getting my daily newspaper but I will say when it’s not available reading it on the app is okay. I’ve gotten use to it and it’s becoming more and more easy to maneuver.

obnoxious ads, decent local content

Downhill since Gannett acquisition; local news is a critical but unprofitable business, and corporate overlords are less interested in quality than margin. At least let subscribers read stories without ads taking up 70% of screen real estate all the time. ಠ_ಠ

Like the news, but not the Ads

I appreciate the local news stories, but I was disappointed when a paid subscription does not remove the ads. The choice of advertisements is especially annoying, reminds me of internet clickbait.

Good local and national news

Since moving to Ventura from Los Angeles we have enjoyed getting local news through the Ventura Star. While more conservative leaning than I enjoy they do provide the local news in a through manner.

New format

Is breaking my heart. It seems to change the access process every time I try to access it. I have had to call at least three times now to figure it out. Pleeeeze. Go back to the old format. (Should I also mention how much easier it was to read in the old app; it could be brought up in a narrow column which I could then (speed) read.)

Easy to navigate

It’s so nice to be able to pull up my local news. I have had a few issues trying to activate my digits subscription but the app itself is great. Easy to get around and good content.

Slow to load

The original app loaded much faster The app needs to reduce size of page turn arrows they block the stories I can’t turn the display to horizontal on my phone anyway Random blue or black line appears on page

Cannot bookmark articles

Update April 2018 - issue with bookmarks still not fixed, even after latest update. Seriously? --------------- Since Sept update, articles cannot be bookmarked in the app. Reported this, received email 'we are aware,' but after several more updates, it still doesn't work. I won't update my other Gannet newspaper app (Milwaukee journal) in fear of also losing ability to bookmark stories.

Woefully Inadequate

Difficult to navigate. Not informative. Has the quality of an app that was created for 1999. Needs a complete redesign. For a news organization like VC Star, I had higher expectations, especially in the provision of local news. I find that to be fully informed of local news, I must go to KVTA’s website, which often has more coverage (and it is free). Sad.

The local news coverage is great, the new updates have made navigating around the many, many ads a little bit easier.

Limited highlighting

I am a senior with poor vision and relie on audio to read the paper. It is frustrating trying to highlight a page to be read when only one highlight of a sentence or paragraph is limited. Rather then a page being highlighted.

Getting this news online only

It always seems so, complex to open The app I pay them in a regular online manner but it’s A struggle to see the paper and read the articles.. not happy with the accessibility..

Glitches abound

I purchased the digital subscription but the app regularly seems to forget that. I’m signed in, it shows I have an active subscription but it seems like every few days it’s telling me I need to subscribe to view an article. When I click sign in, it does nothing or it says that service in unavailable. Lame...

Why Sports alerts?

I don’t watch or follow sports but am constantly getting alerts for them. I checked my settings again and sports is not selected. Very annoying

The borders

Why can’t the pages be full instead of large border space around the paper. I would like to read the paper as I did before now you have to either click on the article, which works but you can do that with the comics

Way more difficult to navigate than needs to be

Why isn't local news updated?

The Home Page seems to have much of the current news information. But the local sections have not been updated in five to six months. It's been like this for a long time. My App is the latest version, so someone needs to look at this ASAP!

Advertisements

I find it obnoxious that I am a paying subscriber and there are still advertisements that pop up before every other article I open. Use your browser and read the articles ad-free. Very annoying.

Quality of reporting has fallen

The quality of reporting has declined over time. Pretty much every article is a fluff piece as in there isn’t any articles of the issues that plague Ventura county. Also, they have removed the options of leaving comments there by silencing any un consenting views.

The VCStar keeps me in touch with what’s happening in Ventura County. The national news is also well written.

No font size control

The text font size in this app (especially on the home pages) is tiny. The app doesn’t reflect my system settings for larger font size, and there’s no way to change the font size in the app. Boo!

Fix this app

I paid for a year subscription so why does this app constantly restrict my access by stating I’ve read the allotted 6 stories for the month?! Then a “restore purchase” link shows up but it does not allow me to sign in. Super super frustrating!!!

Horrible app. This propaganda paper was borderline tolerable. It’s purpose is only to see public notifications. The new app pushes it closer to dropping the subscription. Btw, you really ought to try being non-biased. Your subscription would quadruple.
