I love Vooks so much, it’s the only thing my toddler is allowed to watch and I am constantly impressed by how the stories help expand his vocabulary and enrich his understanding of the world. We have several stories on our favorites list that he watches repeatedly, just like we read many of the same books over and over. It’s not addicting, so while he often asks for “one more Vooks book,” it’s easy to get him to move on to another activity. It has also really helped with transitions between play time and “wind down” time. I’m just starting to explore some of the books for older kids, and I can see that it’ll be nice to have as he grows. Criticisms: -I wish the Apple TV version of the app didn’t auto-play books that aren’t on my favorites list. -I wish filtering and the search function were more refined (by age, subject, etc.). It takes some extra effort/watching on my part to find books that my toddler will be interested in and that are age appropriate. Otherwise, it’s great!!
Vooks is a unique and compelling streaming storybook site that brings books to life for preschool and elementary school aged kids. The stories aren’t only read aloud, but are also animated like a 10-minute (or so) film. The stories are narrated with various fun voices and accompanying music, keeping young readers and listeners attention. And it’s easy to use! Just choose a storybook, click on play, and watch and listen. The text appears on each page and is highlighted as the narrator reads each word, encouraging the child to read along. There are numerous types and themes of books, such as be brave, be creative, biographies, and more. So, the streaming storybooks aren’t only entertaining, but informative and character-building too. There are also lesson plans and other resources for extended learning. This animated storybook concept is so fun. I wish I had Vooks when I was a child. I’m thrilled with my new subscription and look forward to reading and listening to the variety of animated stories with my grandson. Disclosure: Many thanks to Vooks for providing this product/product information for review. Opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.
My elementary aged kids love this app. I love it also but what else is wonderful is there are activities that go with the animated story books (on their website) so it’s more than just enjoying a good story. There is a large quantity of books with the subscription compared to other apps and services. The quality of the books and animation is stellar. The organization of the books by age, topic and etc make it easy for you to supplement with the theme you are teaching. App runs smoothly and no bugs I have experienced yet. I feel confident in the safety and quality of the materials. You could let your child use this app on their own without worry. I’m especially looking forward to delving into some of the biographies next. 5 well earned stars for Vooks app.
… literally, I paid the $95 for a lifetime subscription option with almost no hesitation when it came out. We’ve loved Vooks since my 6-year-old was a baby. He and my 2-year-old enjoy watching the videos together, and I feel good about knowing it’s helping them learn to read. We enjoy the Vooks originals a lot, and I’m delighted lately to see more of our hard-copy favorites appearing too, like Ada Twist, Scientist. The only thing I would change is to say please make an app we can use on our Roku and Apple TVs! It’s nice having the episodes on Netflix, but not the same as having access to the full library of content. Thanks!
Just started with the app. The video books are great so far. However, there needs to be a way for me to save books to lists I choose - to help me plan for unit studies or just to personalize so I can avoid books I may not like. I also wish there were filters when doing a search. Edit: After using it more, the above really would be helpful. I’m also lowering my review. Again, the quality of books is great but without the ability to personalize, every time I login, I see the same universe of books. I’d also like the option to mark a book to never play again. Also, when looking at the description of a book, it would be so helpful to be able to click on the author to see more or to click on the descriptions (that are by the time) to see similar.
Best app for early readers and kids that love story time
My girls love to spend time just watching their favorite books come to life in a Vook. We’ve used this app for years and it’s only gotten better with updates. Each month they offer special selections to coincide with holidays and current events. I highly recommend this app for kids and excellent for teachers in classroom settings. We homeschool, and it’s so nice going to the catalog selection and picking a new story for every day. We have never had to repeat although my girls will rewatch their favorites long after our school day is done. Love it!!
I could get over the fact that when I first found this program, it looked like they were a bunch of main marketplace books, and it appears the only licensing they have is for curious George, which is over the head of my child. But what really pulls my rating down is that there doesn’t seem to be as many books as they say, based on the fact that after three months they’re still pushing the same books. Another thing is you cannot just flow from the living room TV to the family room TV to the bedroom TV, because once you’ve signed in on another TV it signs you out on the others. I’m the only one that can get the password going easily and so the other family members just basically don’t do books with our child. Great concept, lousy marketing, and rollout.
Wonderful product. I started using it for school, and soon my kids were watching Vooks and loving it. Recently though, the app has been having issues to the point where I can’t even use it. I get emails from Vooks and if I use a link in the emails I receive everything is fine (running it through the webpage, not the app) but every time I open the app, I can’t use it. It says that my subscription has expired which is definitely not the case. I’ve tried to delete and reinstall the app, but I still get the same issue. It just tells me to update my information, but when I do it says I don’t have a subscription. I’m hoping it’s just a small hiccup that passes, but it is a little annoying.
We have never downloaded a kid app yet (4yr-old and 2-yr old) and I was unsure about the slippery slope of them begging for screen time. We got Vooks to supplement our book collection since we cannot go to the library during the pandemic. I am pleased to report this app is darling and pretty darn close to reading a real book only BETTER. Keeps their attention and encourages their love of reading. And gives this momma a quick break during all of this quarantine business. I am so thankful I found this app. We will definitely keep our subscription indefinitely. Thank you!
Hello my name is foxy and I’m just saying that can you please add more things to this game cuz I’m not saying it’s bad I’m just saying that I want more like you know more books more new things each Holliday but like I want something other than just like 7 options of books to reed and Can you also add search bars so you can search the book that you want like say I want this book called farm lands and then you search it up please I would appreciate it if you could do that I know it’s a lot to ask but please *btw I love your shows on tv ♥️ 💜 ❤️* xoxoxoxoxoxox signed by foxy 🦊 byeeeeeee!!
New update is slow, and it doesn’t let to keep it in horizontal view unless you are watching a book. So you’re constantly having to rotate the iPad from the menu to the book. Also things just load slowly and are unresponsive to touch inputs. Edit: The past week, the app opens past the beginning load screen, but then completely goes to a white screen and doesn’t load anything after. I’ve tried deleting and redos loading the app as well as updating iOS but nothing works. The app just won’t won’t load. Website still works great, so I’ll just be using that til the bugs are ironed out. Using a first gen iPad Pro. Would think that would be a problem, but maybe that helps.
My daughter loves Vooks! She can watch book after book unfold and not lose interest. I love that each word is highlighted as it’s read. This feature helps my daughter to recognize more words. As a parent, I especially appreciate the fun educational stories. Vooks allows my daughter to feel like she’s getting a treat with some screen time, all while I’m also happy because it’s helping her reading skills. Vooks is engaging and entertaining while not being overstimulating. I recommend Vooks to encourage a love of reading and books for little ones!
We've used this app for over a year now and my kids love it. But suddenly it keeps saying my subscription is expired even though i pay monthly and it hasn't expired this month yet. I can't reach anyone for customer service to help with the issue. I've tried canceling the subscription and getting a new one, restoring the purchase, deleting the app and redownloading it. Nothing works and one time is said it let me subscibe again and said thank you for joining but then it wouldnt let me start watching or open the app at all. Just keeps telling me it's expired. My kids really want this app to work but if I keep having problems with no resolution we're just going to have to cancel and delete it.
I have written a previous review about the newest update and iOS interface being very difficult to use. Recently Vooks has started crashing across all of my devices, making it virtually unusable. I am a speech pathologist working with young kids and kids on the autism spectrum and this app has been a life saver since I got it over a year ago. I am so disappointed in the new changes—and so are my kiddos! Please fix this app!! For what it’s worth, another reviewer mentioned that her devices are older. All of mine are brand new!!
I have been paying for this every month, but lately I’ve downloaded the app, but it seems I cannot log in. It says wrong password but I can log in through browser, have changed my password through forget password but still the same issue. Can change my password everytime but on browser and it works fine, but once I try to log in through app, it says wrong password
We have loved Vooks for over a year and the new books they continue to add, BUT this new update has made it completely impossible to use. It stays in portrait mode even if the iPad is locked in landscape (which is mostly just annoying), removed all our saved favorites, but the main issue is it keeps quitting the app every time I try starting any book. Maybe it’s because my iPad is a few years old, but this is so frustrating that it used to work great and doesn’t anymore. Plus my kids have no interest in sitting around for it while it glitches over and over. Please fix it this so it works again, and not just for the newest devices.
The app itself is fantastic - has a huge variety of books, your kid can safely surf through things, and everything is age appropriate. However, the reason for the 3 stars is the performance of the app. It frequently has issues connecting to the internet (all other apps work appropriately when this is happening, so it’s not the internet or my phone). This occurs even when there is a strong signal and standing next to the router. I assume it’s a recent update as this wasn’t the case a few months ago. I’d recommend downloading whichever books you’d want so then this isn’t as big of an issue.
I used to go to the library and watch stories on cassettes and microfilm. Also had little records that I loved that came with books. Vooks reminds me of that time. I hope these will be available in a variety of languages, especially Spanish. I also hope to hear a wide variation of voices. I loved hearing the regional dialect of Farmer John....and the reading by John Lithgow is why I signed up. Thank you so much for this inspiring work! As an ESL tutor/teacher who loves stories, language, and art —-I am grateful for the inspiration.
My children, ages 7 & 4, really enjoy this app. I love it, too! The book selection is excellent. The readers are skilled and enjoyable to listen to. And the animation isn’t over or underdone. It’s nice that the text appears on screen and is highlighted while read. I feel good about giving my kids screen time when it’s with Vooks. It’s truly educational! I have the app on my iPhone, iPad and even on our Roku TV!
This a really great app!!! Is beautifully made and so eye catching for my son. But filter is not working even though im paying for the subscription. Is very disappointing. Not liking that at all. PLEASE do something about that. I opened and closed the app and also turned it off and on, that didn’t fix the problem. It would be Really Even more Amazing if we, as parents, could delete a book or, again, have the filters working. I dont want to delete it. Is really a great book reading app.
This app is a favorite of my kids ages 3-9. They love seeing some of their favorite books come to life and I love that they are engaging with quality children's books. They are often end up cuddling up together with some of their favorite titles like, "Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site!" and "Where Are You?" It's the cutest thing ever. Vooks is always adding new content so there are always fresh adventures to be had! Highly recommend this fun app!
The app support goes to a dead link, and I couldn't find contact info on the website, so I'm hoping to get some help here. When my son tries to watch a vook on his iPad, it starts briefly and then immediately shuts down the app. He has a fair amount of storage available, but how much does the app need to run? Or could there be another problem? It's currently up to date on software releases, and the app works on my phone, so I'm not sure what else to try. Thanks!!
Downloaded this for my preschooler. It offered two subscription plans each with a supposed 7 day free trial period. I chose the yearly and was immediately billed $50+ dollars. This was before I had any chance to evaluate the app as all functionality is hidden behind the paywall. You can’t even see what books are included in the app. Ultimately got a refund through iTunes. Also wasn’t impressed with the app. It leans too far from reading and is more akin to watching TV with subtitles. I prefer similar apps like the Sandra Boynton Load Crow apps that let the child click the words, interact, and develop their reading skills. This is just passive absorption. Do not recommend.
As a Preschool (4-5 years old) teacher and an Aunt to a 4 and almost 2 years old it great to have to VOOKS as an extra resource to help you with story time! It’s interactive and it has really good collection of stories to choose from depending on what categories you’re looking at. Great choice and I’ve been recommending it to all my teacher friends and pretty much anyone who has children. It’s a great tool for those children that are learning to read too!
I love this app. It bring stories to life for kids that might find reading boring. My children love to read books on this app. I believe every parent or teacher should invest in such app if they want to encourage their children to read especially in this time of age where children are mainly focused on electronics and video games. I give it a five star because it true deserves it. Great job.
I’m a Father, I work hard for my family and daughter. When I get home I want to play and interact as much as possible, but at some point I’m tired just like the rest of you. I don’t want to turn on the Tv so this is a good 7-20 min guilt free break. I have my 3 year old choose the book or I show her one of my favorites from my childhood. Books on the go any time anywhere. Can’t beat the price for what you get.
So I’m not a big screen time lover for my kids. I homeschool and I’d rather them be looking at/reading books or playing outside. But this app will be the only app on my phone that my kids use. I just downloaded it tonight and can’t wait to show my 4 kids tomorrow! They will love it just as much as I do! And it will be very helpful for me at appointments or when things go downhill in a store :)
I have used this app for years now off and on. I always end up going back to this one. My 3 year old and 7 year old really love it. I even catch my 13 year old getting into Vooks when she is sitting with my little ones. I have never had to pay anything and there are no ads.
Vooks is over all a wonderful program but if you have trouble signing in their customer service is NOT helpful. I have had issues signing in on a separate device from my purchase and they never got back to me. Now I am unable to sign in at all. It says my subscription is expired though I have a years subscription and it has been active for a little over a month. It have now been over a week and I am still unable to access my account.
We love this app! However, the latest update made it so the app always loads on portrait (instead of landscape) on our iPad Pro, regardless of the orientation of the device. Also the new UI removed the names of the videos in the browsing page, which combined with having to look at the screen sideways makes it almost impossible to find the vook we’re looking for. Please fix! Running iPadOS 14.4.2 on iPad Pro 12.9 4th gen.
The AppleTV app used to automatically play a new video after the previous one finished, but it doesn’t anymore. It was very convenient to let the kids sit and watch a few videos in a row without needing to manually choose the next one. Please bring that feature back or let me know if it’s an option I need to choose!
I signed up for subscription and they took the fee immediately from the account. I then proceed to log in the the app, it keeps showing error. I tried logging in using a web browser with the exact password, then it was correct. The issue is that we need to use the app since it will be on my tv and my kid tablet, and a browser won’t work. Waste of time and money. I got frustrated trying multiple times, and it still doesn’t work. Clicked on contact customer support link, then it showed “oops! You are lost,..”. Yes, I’m lost with your faulty app.
We used to love Vooks. Then suddenly they dropped a ton of content in around June 2020. All of our favorite books were gone. It broke my sons heart. We aren’t the only ones missing certain titles. Read comments on any of their recent Instagram posts and everyone is complaining. The new content stinks compared to what they used to offer. Definitely not worth paying for now. We won’t be renewing. Bring back Duck on a Tractor, Giraffes Can’t Dance, How does a Dinosaur Say Goodnight, Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, They All Saw A Cat, peanut butter and Jellyfish!!!!!
As a busy mom we sometimes have to get our daily reading done while commuting from One place to another, what better way than to use Vooks? My child loves having a place to go where all the books are safe for her to read and she has the freedom to choose what she wants to read! Thank you for having such an awesome app!
My kids and I are absolutely loving the Vooks app! During these uncertain COVID times, it is so great to have an app that provides both education and entertainment to my six year olds. The selections of books are vast, and having the books animated teaches tone, mood, and inflection and fosters a love of books! For once, I don’t feel guilty about having my daughters spend time on the iPad!
The stories are great and the animation is also great. There’s good variety too... except there’s only one Vook in Spanish. We’re a bilingual family, like many nowadays, and it’s important to develop reading skills in more than one language for this increasingly global economy. Please add vooks in Spanish. My best friend and her toddler speak Swedish. United States is multicultural and we want our kids to benefit from that, right? I can help translate, if you need 😊
My son really enjoys these video books! It would be better if the app allowed one book to start automatically after one finished. I went into settings and turned on this feature but it still doesn’t work. Also I see Christmas and Easter books but I can’t any Hanukkah or Passover books. It would be nice if this site would represent other religions and holidays that people practice.
The app is great… until it breaks. My app has broken twice, resulting in a very upset child. In both cases it has taken days for custom service to resolve the issues. It seems they are quick to charge the monthly fee… and slow to ensure the app works.
I’m an ESL teacher and it truly feels like I’ve stumbled upon a goldmine!! I can’t wait to use it this upcoming school year! Although I don’t know how much I’ll be able to do once the free version ends as I live in Libya and I don’t have the means to subscribe for now😭 I really need to figure that out cause I don’t think I can live without Vooks now that I’ve tried it😂💓
As a teacher for three to four year olds, I find it important to have creative ways in presenting language and literacy. Vooks is a wonderful and creative tool to use during circle that will bring quality children’s literature to life by using the actual artwork and words (highlighted as the story is read) of the original books.
I love this app. I wish there were more nonfiction, bilingual (Spanish and English) books. I also wish there were more FlyGuy and simple chapter books. Those are just wishes. My kids love vooks and love listening and reading along with the books during quiet time. I love it and they keep adding books so I’m hoping they will get more soon.
My kids (ages 6,5 and 2) absolutely love Vooks! They love to read along with the story and ask for it almost every night. I love the pacing of the reading and animation. I appreciate that we are able to order paperback copies of the books because now my kids like to listen to it read and follow along in the book. A great app!
My kids love this app and all the amazing books it has. I do wish it had many more because we usually listen to 3 or 4 each night. Unfortunately I had to cancel my subscription since we couldn’t fit it in our budget anymore but I would subscribe again in a heart beat!
I really love this app. I own a small family daycare and my kids listen, watch and read vooks every day. They get so excited to see the books we have been reading during story time on the screen. They read along, clap and enjoy there Vooks time so much.
My family loves this app! All 4 of my kids (ages 10-2) look forward to our nightly reading before bed. The 2 YO is always asking to watch her favorite book over and over and has it memorized. I appreciate the variety of books offered. They are all extremely well done. I want more, more, and more!
Didn’t care for this app at all. I thought it would be like a simple virtual read along only. Instead it’s more like allowing my child to watch TV, just with subtitiles on. First, there is music in the audio that you cannot lower or mute. It is way too distracting. Every single of their books had music in it that I could not turn off. Secondly, too many movements in the illustrations, unlike a still picture book. It distracts the child away from focusing on the words on the page. I wish this app provided more of a non over-stimulating experience. Or at least gave the option for a “low stimulation” setting or something. It felt the same as any other passive zombie-like screen time to me, not something calming or educational as I thought. Therefore I deleted the app and didn’t allow my children to use it.
Our whole family LOVES Vooks! We have started doing one book every night before bed, and the kids are always wanting more. We love watching some of our favorite books come to life. Seriously, this is some quality family screen time you can feel good about. 👍👍
My two year old and four year old love Vooks (and I do too)! We have a pretty extensive at home library and frequently borrow from our library but Vooks is an awesome supplement to our daily read alouds! Love the variety of books available and we love seeing so many of our favorites come to life!
The idea and content is sweet. Little kids will enjoy it. However, it is a very glitchy app. Now we can’t even watch our paid subscription because it says the subscription expired!? When trying to renew or restore, it won’t load the content. Honestly, I’m thinking of canceling and finding something else. It’s not worth the trouble/support emails.
I signed up online and when I went to login to the app it keeps giving me a message of wrong password. When I login online I’m able to get in. Overall, I think vooks has many good books and resources. I can’t wait to start using the app with my students.
