The app functions fine, however it doesn’t fit my screen correctly and the upper section covers my clock and my network & battery icons at the top. I can’t use the hamburger menu, search or back arrows. As I started writing this I began to wonder if my font size settings might be affecting the UX, but if the app is following the disability developer settings and separating the top UX from the rest of the compliant parts it shouldn’t be an issue. Either way it’s something that needs to be fixed.
Around the DC metro area this radio station is jokingly known as the “all commercial, occasional content all the time”. They stick a commercial in every nook and cranny - And the same lame low end commercials over and over again. The commercials are mostly for overpriced roofers, window installers, plumbers and “clinics” for erectile disfunction or any other disease, or fake disease a hypochondriac could imagine. Basically, if you hear a commercial on this station (and that’s mostly what you’ll hear) you want to avoid that company like the plague. I have had this app for a few years and throughout the day I would check in at the top of the hour for news updates or for weather updates or until the commercials drove me away. But the recent version of the app started sticking in a commercial every time you start or pause the app. That’s a new low and the last straw for me. It’s ridiculous to force feed so many commercials, especially at a time when people are fleeing commercial driven media for on-demand services. I know the station is owned by some greedy media conglomerate that couldn’t care less about quality, but the listening experience on this app (and station) has become intolerable. Unless you love endless bad commercials from lame companies, don’t waste you time with WTOP.
Unless streaming their live feed, this app is useless
I just came in from my car. It is September 20th. There is a story on the air about beaches reopening because they were closed due to medical waste washing ashore earlier in the week. I go to the app and search ‘beaches’ and ‘beach’. There is no link to this story. No articles come up that are less than a few years old. So I then search ‘medical waste’ I get stories from earlier in the week from 2 days ago, but not the one currently on the air. This app is ALWAYS like this. You can never find the story unless it is a major headline. Sometimes they announce on air a keyword to search to find more information on a story the article but not lately.
The overhauled WTOP app seems to run much smoother as far as reading news is concerned, however listening to the audio stream doesn't work half the time, and then there are the notifications! As soon as the overhauled version released, now the app sends multiple political notifications throughout the day, every day, and there is no way to adjust or disable this outside of blocking the app from notifications in iOS! Thr only setting available in Settings is your weather location... this app seems half baked. The web News side has been fixed, but everything else is really poor.
Several articles open outside of the app, and they don’t load properly. The ads outside of the app appear to keep the articles from loading. Extremely frustrating. Why can’t everything load within the app?
I was born in DC and grew up listening to the station. I cannot successfully stream for more than 5-10 minutes. It just stops. It also does not pay attention to the other lPhone sound controls - like PLDespite your latest update it still fails in the exact same way and I still have to reboot the phone. Please fix this. I have complained to you for years about your app going completely non-functional. Despite multiple updates to your latest version it has not changed. New iPhone. New IOS. New download of all apps. There’s not a lot for me to do except just completely forgetting you guys exist. So much for big stations and big money.
I agree with the other reviewer, that the app does not allow streaming audio 50% of the time-even if you’re outside with good reception. I haven’t been hit with a blitz of ads yet. When the streaming audio does work, you can hear the news anchors repeatedly give out the wrong time (sometimes hours off) it makes you think they have a problem reading a clock. I also noticed the news anchors give a teaser storyline, cut to a commercial and completely forget the teaser story that they tempted you to stay tuned for. Wished WTOP app developers read these reviews and implemented fixes-and someone should buy the newsroom a large digital clock!
Looks like app has been fixed for those of us who use 24 hour time format. Uninstalled old version and installed latest version and all is working perfect. Have had no issues with audio dropping as previous reviewer (but then again I have fantastic LTE coverage) and I am really digging all the stuff packed into this app!
Adjustments based on our feedback? What adjustments? The app still crashes when activated. You guys need to get this together soon, we all are missing our news! ***Edit; update has been installed but it goes to a white screen then to a blue one with a infinite load icon. Tapping on notification doesn’t take you to that article
Overall the app is okay. One thing that definitely needs to be addressed is the link between the notification pop up and the actual article. When a WTOP notification pops up and I click on it, it will open the app but it has never taken me to that actual news or article. I have to manually search for it from there - very frustrating.
Just downloaded the new version and it’s great. Really like the design and how they’ve made it easy to listen to the radio. I’m always listening from home in the morning. Love the new features too.
I listen to WTOP every morning via the app, and the past 2 weeks or so it crashes several times. The app completely closes. In the past it would pause a time or two, but now it closes and I have to keep reopening it.
When is the WTOP app going to catch up with the digital world? The iPad app still does not allow being read in landscape mode. I either have to turn my head sideways or Take my device out of its holder and physically turn it.I did specifically download the WTOP app for iPad and I checked that is not locked in one position. Since the app description says it updates it every day I expect this flaw to be corrected by tomorrow, ha ha.
New update crashes on launch on iPhone 7...this needs to be fixed ASAP. Update - the new release did indeed fix the launch crashing. Now that it actually launches, the new app looks great!
This was working fine then literally one day it just started send traffic notifications. I went in the app and all notifications are turned off. I turned them all on then back off to see if that would help but nope. It still sends notifications after notifications. This is getting annoying. This app needs to be fixed.
App is basically unusable now. Any time I try to start it up I get a perpetual loading screen that can only be cleared by rebooting my iPhone. It all started when I got the bright idea that I wanted to wake up listening to WTOP. That doesn't appear to be an option because the one time it worked, I only got a clock tower bell. Now every time I try to go in and do anything... endlessly spinning wheel of loading. Two stars to reflect the many years I've used this app and listened to the radio station, reduced by the disappointment that the app is now broken. For me at least.
The app only appears to display in “portrait” mode on my iPad, which would normally not be a big problem, however I have an attached keyboard, and it is clumsy to turn the tablet and keyboard on its side. Otherwise it seems to show the news stories I look for.
I've had this app for a few years and it's been working well until recently when I started using the app again a few weeks ago. I can't listen live at all as it'll crash as soon as I tap the listen button.
It was a great idea to make the app available for CarPlay. It’s quick and easy to listen to WTOP radio or the most recent traffic report. The feature did freeze on me once, but it’s a good start.
Right now, everytime I try to open the app to check weather or updates, it goes blank and shuts down on me. I use this app all day everyday! This is driving me crazy!
This was my “go to” app for news and traffic before I got in my car. I had to stop using it over 1 year ago because of inconsistency in streaming. Tried to give it a shot today and it won’t even open, keeps crashing. Unfortunately had to delete app, my XM app isn’t as locally detailed with traffic, but it works.
Because Of developer response i download app to give second try so far I'm impressed. I will happily change my 4 star to 5 in a few weeks if the app deserves it. Well done.
I still can’t get current weather info. I can get the news, traffic, and listen live but when I open the weather tab there is no info. I thought the recent update was supposed to fix this problem.
The current version of the app operates continuously in the background even when you are not using it. AND despite iPhone settings that deny permission for background processing. I was shocked to find I had lost 40% of my battery charge early in the day. My charge typically lasts until bedtime with 50-60% remaining then. I had to delete the app.
When you are looking at the hourly forecasts, you don’t see what hours they actually correspond to. The daily forecast has days, like Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. But the hourly forecast does not list any of the hours. You are left to imagine whether or not it’s 12 o’clock 1 o’clock 2 o’clock 3 o’clock.
It seems like the last couple of updates were great. Steaming was much improved and stopped disconnecting. The version of the app is having major problems with crashing and steaming not functioning properly or at all. Please fix. I love this app! 😭
The newest version crashes every time I try to listen to it. Restart it multiple times to just do the same. I’m deleting it and finding another’s news app...BEYOND FRUSTRATING!!! 12/13 and STILL CRASHING. I’m running it on an iPhone7 with up to date software and this app works for at most a minute. So frustrating!!!!!
Horrible app. Trying to listen to up to date sever weather forecast or any daily live news feed and the app stops. Impossible to use for local alerts and news coverage because it stops after a few mins.
Very little news, but lots of what they call “Revcontent” that turns out to be news-like articles trying to get your money. Everybody out to get your $$$ these days! If you still use the WTOP app, stop reading below the first couple of headline stories.
I like to read the news on my iPad but when I open the WTOP app it only allows me to read it in portrait mode and not landscape. This is incredibly lame I’m dumbfounded that they have not been able to fix it. it’s if they’ve given up on it.
Latest version can’t be used for weather at all; no temperature forecast is displayed and radar can’t be pulled up. I deleted app and downloaded again to no avail. Is anyone paying attention??
Listening to the stream kills the battery. Having the battery level drop 30-50 percentage points in five minutes is unacceptable. Waze does not begin to touch that level of drain. Bad Form.
It randomly re-starts while listening I checked cell signal and most of the time I’m at 3-4 bars Fustrating that suddenly during traffic or news I hear “the WTOP listen live experience “
I downloaded the new app. The news feed never came up. I tried connecting using my Twitter account and neither the my page nor the news feed came up. Just wanted battery spinning. Weather and traffic were fine. Very disappointed
We meet again...the latest update has once more chosen to shut down my app rather than open it. I’m unable to even access the application. So until it’s fixed, I’m back to a 1-star rating.
I have listened to WTOP FOREVER via FM radio on my Sony alarm clock. It finally died a year ago. So now I listen via iPhone. I usually have to dial in because this app NEVER works! Today the dial in is not working either! So out into the world I go uninformed😳😱 😉. I’m so scared. Fix this or remove this!
When not on a WiFi network, the app/live steam is intermittent at best on the Verizon cell network. Closing the app does not reset. The only way to reset is to complete shut my phone down and restart.
Whoever designed and developed this app needs to be slapped silly. You can’t orient the app in landscape mode, you’re stuck in portrait. So dumb. And let’s not leave out the plethora of ads and junk. This app isn’t worth downloading. Pure garbage.
