I'm an animator, comic maker, gamedev, and toy designer. Every single day, I need to make signage, workshop a font, or make a logo or an asset for myself that's fullynroyalty free. This app is blazingly fast, has smooth and intuitive drawing tools, and has a UI that can be picked up in seconds. As someone who used the Mac Os add ons for photoshop and illustrator, it's absolutely incredible just how much fat is cut from that experience and put into this app with care. Fontself has truly made one of the easiest ways to make fonts for yourself with ZERO headache. The biggest cons at the moment is that the standard brush is indeed a standard singular brush; there's no brush import or vector stroke creation tools, so stylizing your strokes comes down to tweaking pressure and taper settings. I asked the developer if image uploading will be available, and they responded (within seconds) that they are working on it. Which helps me ease into my final point: the devs. Extremely responsive, casual, and easy to ask questions to with the apps built in q/a function. They seem to truly listen to suggestions and act on them immediately. I had to rare 5 stars. Font creation has been such a mystery to me for most of my life, and now I can make my own fonts in actual seconds. If you really want to get into making your own fonts, this is absolutely a great app to start.
I am so pleased with my paid version of Fontself! I had to delete and reinstall my app do to previously downloading the app under my old Apple ID and than purchasing the paid version under my new Apple ID. I reached out to the developer via APP SUPPORT located in the upper right hand side just above the REVIEWS. The developer was very helpful with all my questions. I was able to keep and reinstall all editable projects back into FONTSELF. If anyone needs to know how to save/archive editable project files, go to the QUESTION MARK in the upper right hand corner (need to be where all your projects are), click on GET HELP type in ARCHIVE. Click on ARCHIVE fonts (backup) and you will be walked throu the entire process. I am really enjoying using this app! I am excited to see what new features the developers will be adding in the near future.
After a couple hours of use, I’ve found this app to be a super helpful tool for any aspiring font creator. It has great tools and workflow, the interface seems incredibly streamlined, and I have the ability to add more characters to my font than almost any other free font-making service. Reading through some comments, I found a lot of complaints about pricing. However, after exporting many fonts, I have found no such paywall. Maybe the developers have changed their app, but my experience with this app has been an amazing and completely free. If I had to critique anything, it would be the stabilization and shape making. As a devoted Procreate user, I am typically pampered with stabilization settings and strengths. However, my drawing in this app often came out wavy and in need of fixing. Of course, there are always the great vector editing tools to assist me with my jittery drawing, but this often came at the expense of a lot of time fiddling with settings. It’s the same story with shapes, they just took so long to make. With the incredible workflow this app typically has, this stood out to me. Then again, font-making is a time consuming project, and I still heavily recommend this app even with its small struggles. It is a great tool for any consumer and something you should definitely try, especially for being as free as it is.
I love this app! It makes font making accessible painless. I am a tattoo artist that has found this is a better way of doing lettering to save me time next time I need similar fonts that are unavailable for download. It’s really cool to add to what I can do on Procreate. I also noticed that the developers have listened to feedback to improve this app over time. That is why I am going to share a few ideas that I think will make this already awesome app even better. I would love to have some copy and paste options to help with consistency and speed making fonts. I also think it would be cool to be able to sketch before I draw, maybe a layer or make your own template system would be good for that. Like I said, I love the app and am grateful to the developers. Keep up the great work!
I absolutely LOVE this app! I’m not an artist, but I feel like one using this app. When first downloading, I excitedly made a font of my own handwriting. (I have horrible handwriting, but somehow it’s really cool having a font of your own chicken scratch.) :-) I’m now capturing the handwriting of all my loved ones. It seems like such a small thing, but knowing I’ll always have the ability to recall the unique writing from their own hand is somehow comforting. My parents especially have really wonderful handwriting. (They attended school back when that really mattered.) Now I’ll have their handwriting saved for future generations. Using this app has also inspired me to make new fonts as well. I never knew I had this creative side. Thanks Fontself for unlocking it and making this app so fun and powerful to use!
This has been the best tool for the iPad I’ve use for font making. It’s incredibly easy to use and there are many different brush options available including pressure that help you to get your perfect font design. I few suggestions I would like to add.. the grid lines would be better suited in my opinion with horizontal lines instead of dots. Or at least add the option for one or the other. Another I would like to suggest is an opacity option and maybe even different colors so that you can trace over previous brush strokes without getting confused. I think this would make script font a lot easier to put together.
Super disappointed. A little backstory: I downloaded this app about 3-4 weeks ago and instantly fell in love. I’ve tried different font making apps and this one has thus far been my favorite, despite some minor details. I had already created 4 fonts and was working on my 5th one. As I was working on this font, the app began crashing on me. The first few times I was able to get back in and keep working, but now it won’t get past the “loading your fonts 🙈” screen before it shuts down. Every single time. I had luckily downloaded my finished font files already but can’t access the app anymore to continue creating, contact support or download my other work. I also went online and tried every troubleshooting suggestion to no avail. Hoping to be able to change this review to a more positive one in the future as I did really like the app while I was able to use it!
I live for this App. Ever since I purchased it, I have not put my iPad down. Its easy, fun and very versatile. I love that I only need one application to create fonts. If I could give it more review stars I most definitely would. One of the absolute best things about Fontself is that the developers are interactive with their users. They listen when you make suggestions for the improvement of the app. I love that feature about Fontself. I am greatly looking forward to seeing where this app will take us in the future. Thank you Fontself for creating this awesome application that has me completely spellbound with enthusiasm for creating fonts. I love love love it.
Why on earth is Apple ID sign-in the only way to access this app? Can't do that without 2fa. Not willing to do that just for this one application. Was hoping this could be an effective method for rapid prototyping, but guess I won't be able to even try it out—or find out the price for the full iPad version for that matter, since it's listed nowhere. Update: Thanks for responding and for letting me know the cost. I understand having Apple manage login is the easiest option for a developer. However, Apple will not allow me to utilize their login without 2fa turned on. 2fa is not an option for my family, they need to be able to access my account. My ire is mostly with Apple, but it's honestly really a shame that this is the only way to use this app.
I love fontself because it is very intuitive, simple, and fun, and works great with the Apple Pencil 2. It is a high quality app, without the annoyance of ads. I used the free version and had so much fun that I paid the one-time purchase for the full version so I could export my fonts for Windows. It was well worth it to support the developer. The developer is very responsive and easy to contact from within the app, and they are actively asking for your ideas on how to make fontself even better. They are also actively adding new features regularly. There are now many customizable brushes and tools!
An awesome font creation tool — now with ability to save fonts for future editing!!!!
I am planning to make a lyric video — and did not think that I would be able to find the right font for the project. Enter this app, and I can solve the problem by just creating the font I want myself. ::: And now this app also allows you to not just _export_ fonts for actual _use_ on your computer —- but also to _archive_ them for future work. :-) So what _was_ the one drawback at the time that I first got this app has now been fixed. :-)
Have pay to use the font that you spend hours to make
Pros: The interface is straightforward and user-friendly, allowing for easy navigation. Features like customizable pens and adjustable stroke settings provide flexibility in font creation. The inclusion of a true vector font creator is a standout feature. Cons: Limited language support and fees for font export can be drawbacks. Users may find the learning curve steep, particularly with vector drawing, which can prolong the font creation process. Conclusion: While waiting for updates to address language support (including math fonts) and fee transparency, the software shows potential. Once these issues are resolved, it could become a valuable tool for font designers.
I am a small business owner and having my own fonts to put on my products has always been something I’ve wanted to do but never knew where to start. I saw this app being recommended by a YouTuber and I downloaded it and haven’t put it down since! It’s is well worth the price and it’s been so fun making my fonts and using them in both procreate and Adobe Illustrator! The customer service is also phenomenal and it’s amazing how they really care about what their users want to see! I highly recommend!
I'm in love with this app—it's sleek, intuitive, and packed with useful features. Just as Procreate revolutionized digital art by offering accessibility alongside a stunning visual user interface experience, I firmly believe Fontself is poised to do the same for lettering and typography designers. I hope in the future that I will be able to create alternative characters and ligatures. I also hope to be able to group font families and sign my fonts, that would take this to a whole new level. :)
I had high hopes for this app but after using it for a few days I’m super disappointed. Here’s my thoughts: Pros: - I like that you can preview your font as your creating it (sample text is “The quick brown fox…”) - The ability to adjust streamline and pressure of the brush is a nice feature. Cons: Zoom function is terrible and frustrating. No curve tool (I should have checked about this before paying for this app. This is a deal breaker). No way to merge multiple strokes. Another deal breaker. Ridiculous that this is not a feature. When making multi lingual characters, you have to re-create the ENTIRE character. There should at least be an option to insert the characters you’ve already created and simply draw the accent marks. Going back and copying and pasting isn’t even an option since you can’t merge multiple strokes. This is a terrible oversight on the developers part. Type & Showcase options are minimal and tacky. (Developers should look up the proper spelling of breathE) Gestures are clunky
I love this app! It has a good feel when I’m drawing letters. I like that I can see and test the font while I’m working on it, and the copy/paste is awesome for consistency. I use it for working out font ideas, making fonts I can use for projects, and just for fun when I’m drawing on my iPad. I love drawing letters in this app. It’s the best iPad app for making fonts I’ve ever used. I can also take images I make in Procreate and add text to them for Instagram posts in this app. It’s great, I love it! I use it all the time.
If you have ever drawn your own font in procreate, you can use this app. It's super easy to use even as someone who is left handed! I only have two things I would change: 1) this may just be inexperience, but I don't know how I would use this app to make a grungy font, since the tools all correct curves and edges to some degree. 2) I would love to see more brushes
I love that this app doesn’t require Illustrator CC! It’s easy to work with for a beginner. It does work with finger drawing but I like using with pencil. I love the vector editing features. I love that it is free to try out all the features before purchase. (Purchase allows you to export your font as an actual font file.) The friendly staff responds to all my chats and added features that I’ve recommended.
The premium version costs $15 USD, I couldn’t find the price on the actual app store. This is pretty well done, seems to function better than most of the alternatives. The UI is great, very intuitive and doesn’t require any background in typography to figure it out. I would love to see more options for the pen, with more pressure sensitivity and taper, since I really love my pointy tapered lines and narrowing them down with the existing eraser is a giant pain in the rear. I’m not a calligrapher :’)
Fontself is extremely easy to use and navigate. The “What’s New” tab helped me to use some of the features. I was able to create a font for the first time and download it to my computer. I had always thought that making your own font was complicated, so I delayed trying to until I found this app. Five stars, amazing!
I’d like to preface this review by saying that I love this app. I love it, love it, love it to death. But, that being said, there are a few things I don’t like or that could be fixed. 1. Please give us the ability to lasso and copy, or copy whole lines of font text. The capital and lowercase letters are the same in my fictional language, and it hurts to have to copy each letter individually. 2. Pen pressure or brush change settings would be appreciated. 3. I don’t like the fact that you can make your own fonts but can’t export them without paying, yet the app is still “free”. At least mention that exporting costs $15 USD in the App Store. I do appreciate the one-time purchase, though. Thanks for the app, and thanks for not trying to squeeze every last drop out of my wallet!
Fontmakers on ios are few and far between. This app is fairly good, it does desperately needs to have an import function of owned fonts/templates. I think the specimen section is quite unique to it, it made me think about how nice it would've been to have typography character options and font pairing staging. Altogether if you have ifontmaker you aren't really adding much but if you don't something about the editing is better.
I draw my own comics but hand lettering on the Cintiq has never been easy. I also avoid using unlicensed comic fonts. The template is easy and convenient. The transfer to the OS font book is quick. In 10 minutes I had my own lettering font. The only charge I would make is expand the options to ALL keys on the keyboard (@#$%&*+/ etc.)
The app is great overall, but you have to pay!! It lets you make a font, but when you can finally get to use it, it pulls up the “subscribe” screen! I get that you would need to pay at some point (the people have to make money somehow), but at least let us use the app to some extent! If you didn’t need to pay, this would be a great app! Other than that, the rest of the app is great (as far as I can tell). Easy to use and works for IPad, unlike some other apps for IPhone.
This app is incredibly easy to use, especially compared to other font making options out there. I have had so much fun creating fonts since I downloaded it. The developers are quick to respond and want to hear your ideas for how to improve the app.
I am just learning to create my own fonts and this program has made it so easy. So easy to trace but still be my own version. You don’t have to print out a trace sheet, trace the items, scan result to computer then install to computer. Just trace and Share (send via email)! Now I just need to learn to use the Apple Pencil! LOL
This app is a great option for making fonts! I love the brush selection and the brush adjustment options! They all flow smoothly as your draw them. I also really like that they give you the ability to adjust the shape of the line with points as well. 10/10 would highly recommended!
This app is extremely easy to use and the results are great. I got it so I could use family member’s handwriting for a family cookbook, but I can already see that I will end up using it for a lot of different things. The developers are really responsive to suggestions as well. Thanks!
This is an amazing app! It’s got some roughness to it, but exceeds any other attempts and I think if the makers keep working on refining it & adding more functions it will become a really phenomenal tool. I was also blown away with it ease of use too, I figured out how to use very easily within 10 mins. without even watching the tutorial. I can’t wait to see where this goes.
Not much more to say. This works great especially with an Apple Pencil. I’ve used it for free, created some nice fonts. And now paid 15 for it to export the font to my computer. I used this app because the competitors are full of obnoxious ads. This one is ad free, you just have to pay for exporting to a Mac.
I really don’t understand why people would rate ANYPLACE THING APP etc. 1 STAR. like yes people many things are money. And whoever made this is honestly being very kind. They’re letting you try something for free and if you can’t accept thing are money then your not gonna do good in life.
I’d love for this to have more control and precision, but I’m thrilled about what it can do so far. The hold for shape smoothing and the copy/paste from letter to letter is awesome. It would be great to also have a way to make guides to snap to and ways to constrain weight of stroke when resizing an element. In any case (see what I did there?), I look forward to further developments!
I love how easy this app is to use! If you know how to use procreate, then it’s even easier. I’m a small business owner and artist and I love being able to now create things using my own fonts. 10/10 would recommend!
The developers here have made a simple mix of accessibility and tools to grow with. The app in intuitive and easy to navigate. Tons of potential here and I look forward to future updates. I’ll definitely spread the word.
Have being waiting for a font app that supports pressure brushes, so kudos for it! In general the app is very nice and user friendly, it has lots of features and the developers work with you and listen all suggestions. Love it, it is a great app, congratulations!
I love being able to design fonts on the go. I have Fontself on my iMac and this is a great companion app for that. The only feature I would like to see added is maybe an alignment tool and possibly smart guides if that's possible.
Please add all text symbols on a basic keyboard. I really dislike when I use a ‘ and it kicks me out of my font. UPDATE: Thank you for the response from the developer! Solved my problem and updated my rating. :)
Easy to use, great app. I was a little worried seeing reviews about the app crashing, but I have now made multiple fonts with zero issues so perhaps that bug has been worked out now. Very happy with this app!
I wanted to create my own font for the book I am working on and this app was the one that was highly recommended. I love it and looking forward to see new feautures in it. 🙌
The fun pack is a one time purchase, but not being able to export fonts without it made me only give one star. Also let me add in my own glyph ranges. Answer: they can get a job, preferably with a good salary. At least make the prices of the fun pack cheaper. I’s also like it if I could use my own glyph ranges. Answer 2: at least lower the prices and make it affordable and available to anyone who wants to make a Font with Fontself.
Overall, the app is great. Problem comes with using the program for the first time - template was difficult to move on the iPad to complete. Errors (lines on the template outside the letter boxes) were tough to erase to ensure a clean font. I will continue to use it and learn, but trying it out for the first time - this is my assessment.
If you want to create a Font on the go, this is the app! Easy and friendly! It has all the tools to start and finish your font without the need of an extra application.
What a dirty trick to get me to download the font app then when i’m ready to get going in the app, you pop in and tell me i have to pay in order to EXPORT. Tell me it costs right up front and not after I downloaded, installed, watched a tutorial. Nice little road you took me down but i’m getting out of this ride; I don’t trust you when you give me the dirty little slight of hand routine.
It’s becuz I don’t wanna just use a pencil to make my own font first of all I didint know I had to use a pencil secondly I don’t want to draw on my iPad then it won’t erase off my screen lastly my iPad could just… break so this is why I gave it 4 stars
Fontself is so fun and flexible. You can jump in and start concepting in seconds, or deep dive into your letterforms and obsess over every anchor point. It's beautiful on iPad and editing in the Illustrator plugin is so helpful. Designers, go make!
If you have an Apple Pencil, it’s right next to Procreate as a must-have app. Although its a very new app, and in early stages of development, it already makes a vert good caligraphy pen. Your handwriting has never been prettier! Its a joy to mess around with, and exporting fonts is a breeze.
I like it but the thing is that it doesn’t tell you how to do stuff on it so sometimes you will be like what do I do and then you do something random and don’t know what your doing
