Just what I needed!
I was coming up on the end of my trip to Boston and had booked so many group activities (whale watching, day trip to Martha’s Vineyard, etc - all highly recommended) and yet still felt I hadn’t soaked up enough history in Boston, itself. This app was recommended just as I was about to book a bus tour, which I was just feeling wouldn’t have been intimate/involved enough and it was just perfect! It was about a 2-3 mile narrated tour of the freedom trail plus some extra historic sites, I learned SO much, got some good exercise in, and got to see all the sites up close and personal for a fraction of what any other city tour would’ve cost! I would highly recommend this app. The one thing I will say, (which does not take away from my 5 star rating at all) is that the map isn’t as “smart” as your google maps app. I often used google maps as a supplement/ to navigate. Other than that, this was perfection!

Benefits over tour group guides
First time in Boston. My wife and I split a pair of WIRELESS earbuds. I put in the left ear. She used the right ear. Geo triggers worked perfectly. You can repeat the audio if you miss something. What we liked over using the app more than a tour group type was that we could do our own pace. At one point we found ourselves next to the Sam Adams tasting room, so we had a beer and pretzel. Much later in little Italy we saw a charming bakery down a tight alley. We found a bench and had a coffee and pastry before returning to the Freedom Trail. We lingered for a long time in a cemetery moved by the names we recognized. You can even do half of it and come back another day to do the rest of it. This app is Freedom on the Freedom Trail.

Excellent App!
As most reviewers have said, this APP is amazing. We downloaded it and used it. We found it simple to use, excellent audio narration, great comments on the stops, and on and on. Each commentary is only about 1 to 2 minutes long. And you can easily pause and wait for the noisy truck to go by or not disturb the other tour groups. And you can repeat the commentary if you want. SUGGESTIONS: • Plan on all day to really take it in. We did and were glad. • Take your phone (or iPad) charger, because we ran out of battery by lunch time and had to buy a charger at Walgreens (which happens to be on the route at about the halfway mark). We plugged in our phone while we ate lunch and were good to go. • If you do go all day (we walked from Boston Commons near our hotel to Battery Park), plan on taking an Uber back to your hotel. Best $20 of the whole day.

I think you can skip this app for now
I found the narrator’s voice to be pleasant, but the info in the tells you way less than you can learn at any of the given sights. The navigation was unhelpful as it doesn’t give you exact points — for instance, I had to ask a local where to actually pick up the trail— and once you’re on the trail you can and should really just follow the path that’s been laid. That’s half the fun! Tying to use/navigate the app kept me with my face in my phone for way longer than I wanted to be given the fact that I was trying to sightsee. And the info was frustrating somethings in its brevity—for instance, at the Granary Burial site it tells you that Hancock is buried there, but not where. In Maui, we used a terrific app that used your GPS location to automatically tell you about what you were seeing as you walked or drove. I wish this app could have done that. It required me to do way too much and offered much less than a simple guidebook would have.

Lots of Empty Space
The 15 ~2 minute long explanations that pretty closely mirror the plaques/signs you find at each location is not worth the $10. You get ~30 min of content for a two-hour walk - lots of empty space and time that could easily be filled with the countless, myriad stories and facts that make the time period so interesting - instead you’re walking in silence for the vast majority of time. Additionally, there is no common narrative theme - the very few stories are disjointed and seemingly random. Tip for the writers - listen to the “Road to Hana” driving tour by Gypsy Tours. Fascinating, captivating, and fills the three hour drive to the point where you don’t even realize it’s been three hours. Fantastic content and delivery.

Great resource for self guided tour
Found this app with little research in advance, I didn’t want to pay for a tour for my wife and I and this was the answer! Started at Boston Common and loved how easily it was to use, I just started the tour in the app and started walking. The timing was good for a slow paced stroll along The Freedom Trail. Helped to bring out the history from the bricks and told great stories. Lots of options to learn more at different sites with additional information in app. Well worth the cost

Excellent stories, must buy
Used this app when visiting Boston two weeks ago. Although it was quite chilly, we walked the entire Freedom Trail (even to Bunker Hill). It’s a LONG walk so plan ahead! The stories in the app made the walk enjoyable (we would walk while listening) and allowed us to flexibly choose where to stop for food/rest. There was one spot where my phone’s GPS went haywire but I don’t think it was the app’s fault. (It settled back down in a few blocks). Overall a great resource!

Great, But Battery Drainer
Honestly, this is great for the price and I was able to walk almost all of the freedom trail with my fiancé at our own pace and checking out other shops in the meantime. My biggest complaint is how much battery it drains and how it can be laggy at times. I mean this thing drains it like no other and I actually had to stop walking the trail and continue it another day because I didn’t have enough charge to continue. Definitely needs work on the backend. Other than that it’s great

Excellent tour!
We really enjoyed this Freedom Trail tour! We started around 9am and got ahead of the big tour groups. Husband and I each put an ear bud in and it worked out so well! We did a couple of detours and loved the flexibility. Occasionally the GPS didn’t work well between the building but was easy to manually start an audio section if the GPS function didn’t automatically start it. Map was easy to follow.

Worth considering
Did Freedom Trail using this app and no tour-guide. This app did a good job of giving a basic overview of each stop. I listened to it usually right before or right as I got to each stop, and felt like I knew what was going on. This app is not all-inclusive on info (i.e. still need to listen to guides and read information signs), but is a good starter pack. Didn’t use the navigation on this app (used Google Maps!), but would honestly recommend just watching the iconic red brick trail to know where to go next. Overall would recommend.

Historic Audio Guide
We went to Boston to see our son run the Boston Marathon. We decided to do some history sites. So me and my husband spent afternoon exploring the Freedom Trail using this app. I have walked Freedom Trail when I was in the school. With this app, it was a greatly different experience. The app was an excellent way to remember the American Revolution. We took the extra effort to climb the Bunker Hill Monument (294 Steps) at the end. We stopped at many places. The whole Trip took 2 hours for us!

Flexible and Informative!
It was a great self-guided app and also offered some extra information at some stops. As you walk, it tracks your GPS and plays audio automatically as you arrive at the location. This tour was an excellent way to remember the American Revolution and the history. The really nice thing was that you can focus on your tour and not have your head stuck in a book or map and miss something!

First Time Visitors
This was our first time in Boston and this self-guided app was PERFECT for a day on the Freedom Trail! We loved the go-at-your-own pace idea with clearly marked points of interest along the route, audio information at each stop, and the GPS feature which helped us to hit each important stop on the trail. Highly recommend this informative and convenient app for anyone looking to explore Boston!

Fantastic app. Worth the paid audio tour!
Really do I actually rate an app, much less write a review. I downloaded this app on a whim to give a walking tour of the freedom trail to my in-laws that are visiting Boston from out of town. It worked surprisingly well and everyone enjoyed it. It was totally worth the $7 cost for the freedom trail tour. Only downside was it was hard to hear the audio while outside with all the noise. Thankfully there is a transcription of the audio, so I was able to read it aloud. I would recommend anyone wanting to use it to either bring with a small Bluetooth speaker or several pairs of AirPods so everyone can hear the tour while walking.

wonderful app; worth well more than the price
my wife and i took a walking tour of Boston using the app; each of us used apple earpods, in transparent mode wonderful way to enjoy a city; as you walk near interesting locations, the ‘guide’ verbally provides a narration of what’s being seen the value of the app far exceeds the cost

Great use of technology and a wonderful tour
This was better than expected. The Freedom Trail is cool anyway as a path through Boston but the geofenced navigation in the app and the interesting information made this an easy $10. Shared an AirPod with my nephew and we did the whole thing with a few stops in between.

Frustrating Functionality
It was based on a great concept- of using location services to trigger the narration. But it didn’t work. It jumped all over the place. I could not follow it and when I tried to manually control it without location services it still malfunctioned. Definitely too many bugs to justify the cost. I was able to read the text- but it was only mildly interesting and superficially informative. It was NOT worth the hassle.

Informative but needs work
The information the app gives us quite good. The GPS portion of it isn’t. There’s a map, yes, but it would have been so much better if it gave directions to the next attraction! Also, if you leave the app for any reason, you have to start at the beginning when you return; it doesn’t pinpoint where you are or remember where you left off.

Good for Self-Guided!
It was an interesting approach to a tour! Pretty good price compared to all other guided tours and allowed for flexibility. The app worked well; although the GPS could sometimes be glitchy, as GPS’ are at times with determining accurate current locations. I like the pictures and the script to review what was said.

Great Way to know Boston’s History!
Really loved using this app. We were able to stroll at our own pace and followed the red brick pathway all along. We had some visitors from Out of the State and they loved this app as well as food stops along the way. This App offered rich history Boston has and would recommend to all who enjoy hearing History.

Excellent alternative to a person-led tour
At $10, this was a great value and excellent way to do the Freedom Trail at your own pace. The information provided in concise, yet informative. On occasion, the GPS feature would not work properly, but you can manually trigger the audio to narrate based upon where you are.

Better than a Tour Guide
We used this app for the Freedom Trail in Boston. We set our own pace, stopped for lunch and had an amazing narration all along the trail. Insightful and not long winded, 1-2 minute explanations with prompts for simple directions. The map integration was seamless and extra info if you want. Well worth the price of $9.99.

Saved Guide’s High Cost
It was cold but we decided to walk the Freedom trail. We were three friends. The hotel guide was very expensive. So we looked for an alternative. This App had a free demo. We liked it, So we tried it out and worked out very well for us. We enjoyed the narrated stories and best of all, it was easy to take beer breaks whenever we got too cold.

A slight learning curve required
but overall really excellent. I wouldn’t mind a feature that let’s you go to one of the narrations without having to click through starting at zero if your app crashes. Still highly recommended.

Really good content
A pretty good tour guide app overall. The best info was actually in the little “learn more” at the bottom. I was able to walk the whole thing in a couple hours, but I didn’t actually go inside any of the sites since it was a beautiful day out. I’ll probably go back to see those tomorrow.

Great companion!
Used for the Freedom Trail tour, only time it has issues was during the Granary Burial Grounds. I blame very poor weather causing issues with GPS as we had GPS inaccuracies with Maps all day. Just manually started those parts with any issue. Was great to be able to go at our own time instead of having to go at a tour groups chosen pace. Narrators voice was loud, clear and wonderful to listen too. App has a sample of the narrator before purchasing the tour which was a great touch. Have to 100% recommended this if you want a tour at your own pace!

Enjoyed app, few kinks
Mostly enjoyed this app. A few times it shorted out and would start over on its own or go back to the previous place. But overall easy to use and good information given. Also enjoyed going in reverse and felt like it avoided some of the crowds this way. So thanks for that option.

Great app for the Freedom Trail
This was an amazing app to use on the 2 and a half mile walk. As you walk, it tracks your progress and gives you an audio track upon arriving at certain locations. This is great to use as a self pace tour so that you can make stops at other locations on the trail.

Great tour
The only thing I didn’t like is that it starts automatically when you get to a location. So if you are already listening it starts over. It would be nice to be able to disable that, or if you can I couldn’t figure out how. But it worked great and was well worth the money.

Helpful but not worth the price
While it was nice to help us get around the Freedom Trail and learn the basics of each site, we really wished we had more in-depth information given. Most of the descriptions at the roughly 20 or so stops were only 1-2 minutes in length and we were usually left wanting more. I’d expect this from a free app but one that is $7 should have more IMO.

Well worth the money
Excellent tour for the price. We really appreciated being able to go off the tour to eat and shop and pick up where we left off. One nice add might be to note where public restrooms are located, but otherwise fantastic.

Super cool self-guided tour
This was really neat and we went at our own pace. My only feedback would be to have some audio while you cross the bridge to Bunker Hill. It’s a stretch and having the guide point out a few things as we walked would have been cool.

Totally worth it. You could just walk it yourself but you miss out on some great narration, and to do one of the organized tours you are spending 3x more easily. Highly recommend this for a nice diy walking tour at your own pace.

Worth the $4 to download the Freedom Trail tour
The app will guide you through the Freedom Trail (follow the red brick path) in downtown Boston past 16 historically significant sites. At each site, the narrator will provide information about the site and, in some cases, will link to additional information. Guided tours are much more than $4....the app is totally worth it to tour the Freedom Trail at your own pace.

Sparsely Narrated
I found this walking tour to not have robust enough historical information or detail. I also like walking tour narrations that will give you landmarks and descriptors of where you’re at so you can just listen to it versus constantly looking at your map to tell if you’re going the right direction. Each historical site only had a minute or two of narration if that.

Great self-paced tour of the freedom trail

Geo-locating is nice
Used it most to figure out where we were. I like how the app would start playing as you entered a relevant area, although I often had to pause it if I wasn’t ready to listen (in conversation with someone). Content was fine, but wish it had more stories to tell.

Not necessary
You don’t need the app. The trail is marked by a red brick path. The start and end points are posted on the website. Each site has signs describing the historical significance. The app was not helpful and we stopped using it after the 2nd stop.
