Where do I even begin to sing HUI’s praises? From the get go, HUI has maintained 5 stars in my book. I had been visiting my new grandson in Kapi’olani Medical Center. A couple days before his discharge (yay!) I considered renting a car to run errands and do some shopping. This is when I ran into Kimberly, the awesome car share coordinator who was manning an informational table. After hearing all the perks this service had to offer, I rented one of the vehicles for two hours. Well, ya know how things can get on O’ahu, and I kept calling support to add a few minutes, an hour, and ultimately ended up renting the vehicle at the 24 hour day rate. The support was incredible! In addition to all the perks I remember being told about, a major plus was not having to pay for parking at the hospital. I went in and out many times, and this saved me a bunch of money. *Side note: I fell in love with the car and will look into getting one for my teen drivers. :)
I have been trying to reserve a car to use for the past 2 days… I have been approved and verified by the verification team about 2 months now just didn’t need a car until this memorial weekend. You can say I was been prepared as I know the verification process takes a couple days. Well I updated the app as recommended and when I first signed in, it asked for me to upload my drivers license and verify my address again. No problem doing that. Tried to reserve a car which was available and the app tells me I need to Upload my drivers license to my profile to start. Unable to locate my profile page like it was on the old app. Called customer service (5/30) on memorial day (yes I know maybe not open) but someone answered and unfortunately could only forward my problem to another team who would need to handle my problem. No timeline on when someone would get back to me… Fast forward to this morning, still unable to reserve a vehicle with the same problem going on. Called customer support and again was told they would forward my concern to the verification team. Advised that I was already verified and just needed a car for a couple hours today… Nothing I can do but wait for a call back or my problem resolved… Not off to a good start with Hui, and I really wanted this to work.
I had multiple issues with the app, gas card and late fee charge due to not ending my reservation on the app. Called app support team and left a message, immediately they texted me a response and check if my app was updated, which it was. Updated it, issue resolved. For the gas card, I couldn’t immediately locate the one in the vehicle, so I used my cc and sent an email with a copy of the receipt, I received an response immediately with a refund credit to my cc. For the late charge, I thought it would automatically end on the reserved end time, apparently not, so I was charged a steep late fee. Called customer service and they applied a credit to my current rental. Overall, easy to use and great customer service. Cars are conveniently placed all around Honolulu. Would highly recommend.
So tries Hui for my first time last night and must I say it’s MAYJAH (AMAZING)!!!! The convenience, simplicity, and freedom is just something you can’t deny this company. For starters all you need is 3 things; a valid license, a credit or debit card, and a smartphone! I’m positive almost everyone has these three things nowadays. You download the app, connect your card, then send a picture of you holding your ID and BAM it verified me the next day! May I say Hui is also very efficient? I also spoke with customer service and she was amazing! Her name is Julie. It’s a local company just trying to keep everything local from staff to the stations the cars are placed. I may be mumbling on but it was just too much of a fun experience to not talk about it! I definitely know how my family will be getting around when they visit me! Thank you Hui for being around great app, staff, and services you offer!!!! Mahalo!
I used Hui for 5 days and it worked perfectly every time. The gas card is easy to use and I had no problems filling the car up at Hele, though you can go to any gas station except for Costco and Sam's Club. There are bad reviews of the app not working to unlock the car and I was nervous about this since you need to have cell service to connect to car. However, I went all over Oahu (Kualoa ranch, Makapuu lighthouse hike, Koko head, Eternity beach, pupukea beach, PCC, Dole, Haleiwa, North shore beaches, etc.) and was able to unlock/lock the car (I have verizon). I like that you can cancel on short notice in case your plans change and it's also one of the cheapest options since you don't have to pay for parking. Hui and Turo are the best rental car options and I would definitely use Hui again
The first car we chose was located in a residential apartment building. I was told I could go straight to the garage and get the car, but that didn’t happen. The apartment building had major security, and they denied me access to the car saying “only building residents could use it”. When I called HUI they again told me to just to the garage but wouldn’t listen to me when I said I literally couldn’t get to it. The lady basically told me I was wrong. So I wasted a $10 Uber ride to the place to be denied, and had to get another car at another location which was another $10 Uber. And when I emailed them telling them my bad experience, (waste of time and my money), I got NO RESPONSE. So a $65 car turned into $85 because they don’t have their stuff set up correctly, and then had them had the audacity to straight up ignore me. Never again
This is the easiest way to borrow a car. I simply love it. I left one star out for these reasons: Gas card- I just cant get it to work, I've tried to use it, went to different gas stations, different pumps, to make it work without success. If this process can be simplified, id add in that last star. Also in the app, i dont understand why it doesnt just launch into the hawaiian islands, its like zoomed so far out to see the whole world. Its cumbersome. The search functions are a little time consuming but i think with a little improvements, it can be a delight. Things i love: I can pick any car i want, set the pickup time, walk up to the car, unlock it, and im on my way. The cars are in great condition and comfortable. Their support team is quick to respond if you have any issues at all. Its just so easy and convenient. I have been telling people about it and i cant stop! You have to share a good thing right?
This service is EXCELLENT! Very convenient. The customer service staff was SO helpful and talk me through using the app due to my inexperience with apps and things. Best of all I got connected straight to a human on the phone and didn’t have to go thru a robot to get real help. Hehe. The car was great and very smooth and easy to drive. Even the things that comes with the car make it so handy to get around like the gas card AND the multi-phone charger. I would say all in all the drive hui cars are better AND cheaper then renting a car the traditional way, catching the bus, or a cab or even renting a biki bike!!! Definitely going to start using this service regularly!!!! Thanks Hui!!!
Coming from the mainland, I was excited to use the Getaround app to make my way around the island until I get a car. When I got here however, I was enlightened that Getaround does not exist in Hawaii. So, I went on the search for another carshare app, little did I know that it would be so hard to find one. Hui is advertised as an app that is similar to Getaround, but here’s where it’s not. Getaround has cars on almost every other block when you’re on the mainland. This Hui service is limited only to the Honolulu/ Waikiki area of the island, and therefore is basically useless to the many local people who do not live in that area, or tourists that are staying anywhere else in the island. I was all signed up and ready to book a car when I realized you can only pick one up in that area of the Island. The purpose of me renting a vehicle was for me to get from the windward side to Honolulu. Would not recommend this app unless you are living/ vacationing downtown.
I would give them 0 stars if I could. We were unable to get into the car because the app failed to work and unlock the car for us. The app is incredibly buggy and barely works. We called customer service around 10 times and were only able to get someone on the line once. That conversation was entirely unhelpful. The rep clearly had no idea how to solve the issue and we were told a tech person would call us back to help. We waited by the car for two hours. No call came. During this time, we came across two other groups who were unable to get their app to work, unable to get into their car, and unable to get in touch with support. Ultimately we gave up and left to make new plans for the day that didn't require a car. We had to reschedule other tours that we had planned for the day because Hui completely let us down.
Had a very bad experience with the service. I suggest you to ready the fine prints carefully before deciding to use them. They only provide you the vehicle information 5 mins before the starting time, but you have to spend at least 15 minutes or more to take photos of all dents, scratches and damages during your check-in. The car was dirty and gas was almost out. When I returned my car about 15 minutes late due to traffic, they charge your late fees without any exceptions. I understand this is company’s policy, but they should let customers access the vehicle information early so they can start all the prep work prior the service starts instead of wasting 15 minutes + to take photos and upload to their app. At the end, the total charge is more than a full day rental. Definitely will never use this app again.
Hui is one of those apps that continuously comes in hand time and time again. I’ve been using this service for about a month now to get around and it never fails me. There have been a few times when I’ve needed to contact customer service because of minor errors or questions on my end and they are quick, friendly, and accommodating. The team at Hui continues to exceeded my expectations time and time again. If you need transportation for the day, or even a couple hours- DOWNLOAD THIS!! You won’t regret it. Great selection of vehicles and spaced out within a convenient proximity. Better than Turo in my opinion.
In a modern world where our leaders and influencers are working to increasingly make our cities more walkable, sustainable and cost effective, HUI has in my opinion accelerated that vision. It’s a Game Changer!!! I must admit I had some doubt it could be this simple to rent a car through a app, reserve it for only $9.95 per hour and pay no additional charges for gas and insurance; but YES it’s that simple. HUI will become the template for all sustainable cities. It’s very easy to use. The cars are clean and new, and with HUI always providing new pick up locations across the city, it’s very convenient. Do your life a favor and download the app today. Trust me you won’t regret it!
As anyone who travelled to Oahu knows, parking it limited and expensive. This is the greatest app you can have in Oahu. Funny enough I was actually looking into another car share service but the other one would have taken a week to get their card to drive. I called the customer service at Hui and boom with a few seconds I was connected to someone and they said I can have my accounted opened in minutes. Great news since I was already in Waikiki. The locations are great, the app is nice and their customer service team is beyond wonderful, they truly embody the Aloha Spirit.
I was charged a $250 cleaning fee because I failed to report an unpleasant smell in the vehicle that was present when I entered the car. The person who rented the car after me reported it, and since Hui does not send anyone to check on their vehicles between rentals, the blame fell to me. I tried to bring this up with Hui, but they claimed that they sent somebody to check on the car BEFORE my reservation and the cleaning staff “confirmed” there was no smell before my rental. This is where I have an issue, because this was a blatant lie— if somebody had checked they would know the smell was present during my rental and I would not have been wrongfully charged. My account with Hui was also terminated due to this dispute, which is fine because I didn’t plan to use their service again.
It’s expensive for sure. However it is there when you need a car in a hurry or the last minute. I wish they would give either a military discount for veterans or a locals discount. There is no way to afford a car for the entire day to travel the island. The major brands are a quarter of the price for that. I think they could do a better job at cleaning the windows or just washing the cars. But like I said they are helpful when you need a car last minute
They claim 24/7 roadside assistance yet when you call the number it goes straight to voicemail! Our electronic stopped working after the first day and it ruined our whole plans for the day because we had to wait for the office to open! Terrible customer service, poor roadside assistance, and the app is just stupid. They set it up for you to be stranded with no help. I don’t recommend anyone else to use this, us the extra $$$ it would take to rent from any other car rental spots is worth it because at least you know what you’re getting. This app is totally reliant on electronics and once their system is down then you’ll be stuck in the middle of nowhere with no road side assistance because they don’t even pick up…
Rented a Prius off a recommendation to checkout Hui for hassle free car rentals for the day. The car’s gas tank was on nearly empty when we picked it up. After fueling and getting on the road, we got a “Check Engine” warning and the power from the engine completely died on a extremely busy highway stretch. No response from the gas peddle, was lucky enough to have clear space to coast onto the side and stop with the 4-ways on to warn immense oncoming traffic. The Prius gave us repeating “Braking Power Low, Visit Dealer,” “Check Engine, Visit Dealer,” “Lane Departure Alert Malfunction, Visit Dealer,” “Pre-Collision System Malfunction, Visit Dealer.” Hui says I have to pay for the time I used the vehicle up until the incident, never mind I’m writing this review during the hour+ I’ve been stranded on the side of the highway. Waiting for a UBER they sent to get out here. No official word yet on my refund, or reimbursement for $20 of gas I paid for out of pocket. No offer of a complimentary rental, not that I would feel safe doing so. Awful experience, will never be using this service ever again. Do not use this service. Stay away from Hui for your own safety.
It was so easy and great to use for someone under 25. No additional fees and gas was free but we didn’t even need it because the car is so fuel efficient. We took it for a day trip around O’ahu. We picked it up at 5am for sunrise and it was perfect because we did it all from our phones! Did not even need to wait for a rental place to be open or come back before close. Only thing was the car was a bit dirty (sandy and exterior mud) but that was completely manageable! TOTALLY RECOMMEND!! 10/10!
I just wrote a review earlier about my experience the night before. I was unable to ‘end my ride’ on the app and contacted customer service who could not do anything at the time. The next day I got a text that said I was late over 10 hrs. I actually ended up getting charged a late fee of over $200. I sent an email and it was immediately addressed and the fee was removed. Thank you very much for the quick response and remedy. So relieved!
Could not find any rental cars that would work for me. It seems that the fleet is very small or the service is so popular that there is nothing to rent. Nevertheless, the system is a little bit shady. You can’t see what’s available as a guest. You are required to create an account, upload your ID, enter your address and credit card BEFORE you can see what’s available. Imagine that websites need to check your ID and credit card before allowing you to see what they sell. If you want to delete your account, well… you need to call them… I don’t know if everything is a legit business, but based on my bad experience, I still feel like the whole thing was a scam.
Renting HUI was so different from the usual process -I questioned if it was for real and also, if it was wise to give so much information to an unknown entity over the web. Glad I did. Car was great... price was fair and inclusive of insurance (which is such a rip off) and gas. I would do this again everywhere. I have been reading about the concept of disruptive innovation lately and this experience made me see the car rental business as being ripe for disruptive innovation. Bring it on!
I’m surprise this company hasn’t brought other rental car places to bankruptcy. This is the new modern rental car. You can choose from various locations. You pay by the hour. You can modify your reservations without penalty. You don’t have to fill up the gas all the way to full, only at least 1/4 full. And the best part, their staff is super friendly and courteous. Hands down, this is what customer service and needs are all about. Will definitely use again
Save yourself some aggravation and having some app Have your credit card and personal information without being able to utilize it. Wasted an hour filling out And uploading my license and credit card and when asked to answer questions about driving record it would only allow you to save a yes answer to either having a moving violation or having had 3 or more violations. Why would I answer yes when I’ve had none? Maybe they want to charge more I don’t know. I really wanted to use the app so I deleted and went back in. Same problem. What a waste of time. I guess I’ll just Uber it to wherever I want to go.
Smooth technology. New customers: be aware there is an approval process which takes about 24 hours, and it must be completed before you can make a reservation. I’ll be interested to see my final bill, since the estimate for a 23 hour rental was about $40 more than the $125 per day mentioned on the website. I don’t see how all of that could be tax… Still: less hassle than a Hertz or Enterprise type rental.
I love HUI. Im so thrilled that they accept debit cards now in addition To credit cards. I prefer HUI over TURO and the big corporate car rental companies. HUI is perfect for just renting for a short time let’s say for a grocery run or when moving from place to place or just for a beach excursion, I’d rather not waste gases into our ozone for unecessary 24 hr plus rentals everyone else requires, especially when I just need to knock out a quick errand. Jennifer the manager in Honolulu is so accomadati g she made me less stressed out. Thank you HUI!
There’s really no hidden fees and it’s easy to rent
I was hesitant to rent their car because I didn’t know much about this company but I’m glad to have rented from them. Gas is included in the rental fee and you can rent for however long you need it. It’s so easy to rent and there’s no keys so you’ll need to download the app on your phone to access the car. Overall I’m very thankful for this rental company since you don’t have to rent it for the whole day. Mahalo Hui!!
Great app and rental system! But I have a suggestion. The date selection tool is very hard to use. When selecting it keeps going back to default date. Also, when checking dates and rental in the next page, when I go back to the date selection page my selection goes back to default so I have to make a selection again. Sometimes I just want to select a different time on the same day that I just checked. Please check usability to improve app experience.
Our family had a wonderful experience renting from HUI while in Honolulu. HUI is perfect for getting around when it’s too far to Uber/Lyft. Overnight rental of a traditional rental car would require a parking fee—$$$$ in Honolulu. With HUI we returned the car, rented a different day, and avoided the parking fee. The app is good and the sign up process was straightforward. One UI issue with the app: Be careful when selecting pickup and drop off times. If you go back to adjust a time, BOTH pickup and drop off times automatically reset. Before booking my car, I adjusted my drop off time and inadvertently booked the car for two hours earlier than I wanted because the pickup time reset. All-in-all a great experience. Nice cars, no charge for gas or insurance, and no annoying upselling by a rental agent. I wish more cities had HUI!
Recently visited Oahu and heard about this app through a friend who lives on the island. This was the most convenient app ever. No hassle, easy set up and so many car pick up areas. All of the cars were clean and came with gas cards. If we needed to extend the time it was a quick click. Prices are extremely reasonable compared to renting a car for the duration of our vacation.
Horrible, we booked a month prior from July 14 - 19 and it worked fine the first two days, starting on July 16th the reservation for the car disappeared while we were driving out, we were unable to get back into the car and it left us stranded- and had to uber back to our hotel. The support line was unhelpful, refusing to take calls DURING their business hours (called at 9-10AM), I’ve sent them an email and received no response and so far no explanation about what’s going on. Imagine if we were farther and our reservation were to somehow “disappear”. I would avoid at all costs and book elsewhere.
This was a godsend for me in Honolulu when I realized I needed a rental car for more than just two the days that I had booked with the rental company. Finding a rental in Waikiki last minute is almost impossible. Best thing is you don’t have to worry about parking because you can return it to their own rideshare spot. My only gripe is that I wish they would clean the cars more thoroughly in between customers.
I literally sold my car last year! I figured out why pay insurance and a car payment when half the time I don’t even use it! Drive hui is flexible, cost effective, and so easy to use! Strategically placed spring Honolulu, either by the hour or the whole day they got you covered! Easy to use on a click of an app! Beautiful safe new vehicles! I recommend to everyone!! It’s the future!
We were vacationing in Oahu but did not want to rent a car for the entire week, this was the perfect solution (and half the price of what Hertz quoted me for 1 day). The Prius was very clean and had great gas mileage due to its hybrid engine. We drove around the whole island and had a blast! Highly recommend, especially for travelers under 25 who would normally get dinged with extra charges by rental companies for being underaged.
The Service provided by HUI is a game changer and in my opinion the next big disrupter for the car rental industry. HUI removes all the tediousness, paperwork, and high costs involved in renting a car. I used the service this pas weekend and was fascinated by the transparency, the simplicity, the time, and the price to rent a HUI car. It took me. 10 minutes to download the app, fill my profile, and rent a vehicle. From a technology standpoint, the HUI app is super intuitive and easy to use. I did not have any issues or technical difficulties with the app. The HUI app allows you to locate available cars, serves as your key, and allows you to pay for the services. I highly recommend this service and the use of this app.
This is one of the best ways to get around Oahu and explore the island without having to deal with a car rental and finding a place to park it. Only want to drive around for 2 hours? This is the app for you. The app itself is very easy to use it's amazing how quickly you can go from signing up to driving with your phone as the key!
It’s becoming really hard to find a car. Likely because more visitors are using the service. This app needs a search by duration and maybe a waitlist option? Hunting by date and time picker is painful and emailing to find something isn’t ideal.
Overall the experience with the car was great. The app did what it was supposed to. There was a learning curve though. You cannot get your car early. We got a flight out that was earlier than planned. We had to cancel and rebook our car. The gas card wasn’t found until the end of the trip so we didn’t fill up.
I am sorry to report that the new app available on 5/19 is a step down in usability compared to the old app. Now the map no longer shows the number of available vehicles at each location at a simple glance. Instead the availability is now shown in a list view which gives you no idea where each site is. The big advantage of Hui over other car share programs is the past was the ease of use and intuitiveness of their App. That advantage is now gone. Disappointing.
I travel to Hawaii very often but I always waste so much time renting a car at the airport. Using Hui has simplified my schedule and it is incredibly easy to use. I was very impressed with the quality of cars provided. I’ve used Hui 5 times over 2 days. It saves me the hassle of paying for expensive hotel parking! I love Hui!
Rented a truck to move stuff and when i arrived at the rental 5 minutes early the car was there waiting. At the time my rental started the car wouldn't connect to my phone. I tried everything support told me to do multiple times to no avail. I canceled the rental and rented it again only for the same thing to happen. Wasted an hour of my time and had to pay for an uber. Don't use Hui if you have set plans or time constraints because if something goes wrong support is useless.
I like the easiness of picking up my rental, dropping off, communication to support when needed, and the payment process. My only concern is wondering how do you clean and sanitize in between reservations. My rental was clean but just wondering. I also appreciate the safety features. Thanks for your services. Keep up the great work.
This is the best car share in Hawaii. App needs work... everyone knows how good Hui is and the cars are booked up. Hence it’s not easy to find an available vehicle. Suggestion: redesign the app so a user can say “I’m flexible with my times, tell me which cars will be available”. In this way, the user can avoid having the scroll through various combinations of times and days to find a car.
We use HUI EVERY TIME we come to Oahu after we return our Car Rental from the Airport to our Hotel. It’s so convenient picking up and returning our HUI Car right across the street from our Hotel and never having to worry about paying $75 / night for parking in Waikiki… Here’s to our NEXT… Mahalo!!!!
Convenient and simple. Had to call customer service to help have correct buttons pushed on phone and they were excellent and easy to talk with. Will definitely use again if it is in the my area of travel.
I was in Honolulu all week on business, I needed a car one afternoon and found Hui. Registering was really easy and there was an available car 2 blocks away. Dead simple to use, made it really easy to go to the North Shore for a few hours between client meetings. Great app and great service.
App didn’t work and customer service was VM. Ruined my day trip
Two hour before pick up I was warned of “service interruption”. Got to the car and the app isn’t working anymore. Call customer service and it went straight to VM. Deleted and reinstalled the app and my reservation disappeared. On top of that, they don’t even send an email to confirm the reservation, which is utter nonsense. I now al stuck, with my plans ruined. Paying 2x as much for a last minute rental in hopes of salvaging some of the day.
We rented a Hui twice during our vacation and it was an excellent experience. Love the fact that it includes car chargers for different devices and a gas card. The Lexus we drove was awesome! Being able to lock/unlock and start the vehicle with your own personal phone was mind blowing!
First ride I attempted the car did not have its bluetooth enabled or it was dead. I had no way to unlock it and customer service was completely oblivious for an answer on how to help. I went through every troubleshooting tip. Restarted my phone, turned off wifi, toggled bluetooth on and off. Now I will have to waste more time trying to figure out how to contact their poor customer service to get my refund. Do not use this service
Support is very unhelpful and unwilling to fix issues. I have used this service for years and the cars have always been dirty and i have been willing to overlook that because previously support was helpful. However it seems that times have changed. Do not recommend, Turo is way better and more accommodating.
