So much to take in
I have to say there is so much content here, it’s tough to take it all in. This is not going to be a game you pick up and figure out in an hour or two…or even a week. But saying all that, there are a ton of tutorials and practice games and stuff to introduce you to it. And also, you don’t need to spend a cent to get a lot of content. I have just started to scratch the surface of the game and I already have a lot of gold and wildcards and such. I plan to save it until I have a better handle on what I want to do. There are just so many options it’s a bit overwhelming. Find an online guide, ideally one that will give you some codes for free stuff, and ease into it through that. Without a guide or a friend who can tell you what to do, you’re probably going to bail. And that’s a shame, as this is probably one of the most played and well crafted games in existence. When a card or series of cards breaks the game, they fix it. The documentation is so detailed that it kind of has its own language - you’ll pick it up eventually. I give it 4 stars because you are going to have to devote a lot of time to get to where you can feel competitive…and I haven’t gotten there yet. I hope that will happen eventually. But I also have a life that I enjoy and I refuse to get pulled into an obsession. That might be a challenge, but I’m willing to risk it.

Magic is Dope, Arena is not
Let me start by saying I love magic the gathering m, it is by far the best game ever made it is an incredible game of skill and one of the most fun things ive ever found period. But arena is such an incredibly broken app it simply doesnt function most of the time. about 50% of the time it just crashes for no reason, I always only get half of the gold from my rewards actually put into my account, there are always issues with sending direct challenges (if you cancel a challenge it just greys out the challenge button) and sometimes you can’t send challenges in certain formats for no discernable reason. The game freezes constantly requiring a restart which loses games all the time. And if you leave the app for more than ten seconds it says “connecting to the server” until you restart the app. Overall this is one of the worst made apps of all time, just compare it to league on mobile which is a much much more graphically complex game which runs perfectly every time. also the fact that the cards in gane are rendered in 3d was a horrible decision, as it leads to a lot of the issues i described above. Lastly there needs to be a penalty for leaving the game without conceding, almost half my games end with someone simply leaving the game and you have to wait for like three minutes for their time to run out. This app is Garbage!!!

Old school to new
Have played magic from the mid 90s off and on till today and have loved it magic arena is a decent version of magic but it’s missing a massive part of what makes magic so versatile and that’s the big game modes for many players and that’s multi player game types every thing from 4 way free for alls too two headed giant/dragon and game types like commander and emperor and I ever so much enjoy playing stuff like plane chasers I’ve played magic on so many different game systems and as of late I’ve played every thing from magic 2012 to magic duels on Xbox with an insanely amount of my friends for hours on end against non other then AI computers in 2 headed giant just to kill hours of time and see what kinda crazy stuff we can come up with an I feel like arena missed that mark completely plus with the insanity behind the new cards every like 2 months it fees like now keeping up with the card base and strategy behind decks is getting ridiculous and impossible too keep up with think you guys need to take a step back and reevaluate what magic was in the last 20 years and refocus your efforts too bring back the basics of magic which was too bring players from all aspects together and enjoy the creativity of building decks from what’s available in a game type such as everything from legacy to standard and everything in between we don’t need 100 new play sets a year when we are missing out on the foundation of team based game styles and the casual game experience

How I survived Covid-19 in retail.
Sooo, I used to have a pretty nasty Magic habit, and a pretty poor executed habit at that. I was working at GameStop when I first started playing again for the first time (x4). I was buying in small doses and Fatpacks because I loved the experience of playing a scratch off and still having something to show for it even if I didn’t get a decent win. I loved building decks, but sooner or later I would dread reorganizing, fall out of playing with friends, or decide not to spend an hour driving to come to work sleep deprived for Midnight releases, plus let’s be honest sometimes the smell at Magic events can be very strong and oh my god I’ve had people cheat, flip tables and steal cards. Enter Arena, organization? Meh. Cheaters? Nope. Flipping tables? Maybe theirs but mine isn’t flipping unless I chuck my phone or manhandle my monitor. Stealing cards? Yeah, okay. Smell? Maybe if I’m on public transit or it’s the day after chili night at my house. My only gripe is multiplayer. I want to play two-headed giant, Wizard’s Tower, Commander, but this is a great one on one experience, and the season pass is so worth the cash, it’s also (as has been mentioned) a great learning and experimentation tool for the formats provided. If you love strategy and deck building this is, in my opinion, one of the best games you can download to your phone.

New start
When I was younger I used to collect Magic cards. However I never learned how to play the game. It has been over 13 years since then and I decided I should learn to play. I didn’t exactly find a deck that suited me and I backed out for a while. I have started playing again and I have an idea of what I want to build first. It is a dual red and black sacrifice deck. It will be a bit difficult to get my hands on though which is the only problem. On the other hand, I would like there to be an in game forum where people can chat with each other and give deck building advice. It would be nice to have that. Overall I enjoy the game so far and I want to try out as many strategies as possible. It won’t take long for me to get really good at the game. I have been playing card games since I was in elementary and am a quick learner. In about a week I might be at the skill level needed to master that deck I want to build. And that is all I have to say as of right now. Thank you for all your hard work on designing this game. Not just the card designers, the one who created the game, but everyone who had a role to play. Whether it is small or not that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you all were able to create something remarkable. And for that you should all be proud.

Still Crashes, Not pay to play
I’ve been playing for a few years now, and it’s a blast. I’ve never had too much difficulty winning although I’ve never purchased anything. On the downside, it still freezes frequently. I am usually able to close the app, relaunch, and resume playing the match that froze. However, I often lose my turn or a chance to attack/block. I usually end up have to concede the match. To those who believe this game is pay-to-play. Maybe you just aren’t good at playing and/or deck building? My recommendation is to start with mono red aggro. This allows you to play a simple strat, get some wins and earn some coins without needing extravagant rares/mythics. Another benefit is: you generally know by turn 5 or 6 if you’re going to win or lose. If things aren’t shaping up, concede and try again. You can easily churn out 20-30 games an hour this way with a little less than a 50% win rate. Once you’ve done this and earned some cards, just start building decks that correlate with the colors/goals of the daily challenges. You don’t need to win to cast 30 creatures or 20 blue or white spells. May I suggest mono blue control (counter spells) for any challenges that require the use of blue? Anyway, hope they fix the crashes and hope this helps some newcomers. I don’t on quitting anytime soon. See you all in the Arena.

Great game
Arena is fantastic. Five stars! If I were to ask for some upgrades I personally would like to be able to enter codes on mobile. I would also like to be able to assign pets to specific decks without having to change it in my profile. Lastly and most importantly I love the mastery pass but two things bum me out. I’ve missed several of them and have no way of playing through them to unlock packs and stuff. Secondly, once I pay for a pass I feel like I have a gun to my head forcing to finish before time runs out or else I lose value. Cmon this is predatory, I already gave you money to enhance my play experience don’t ruin it with overt capitalism. I feel like a wrung out sponge! Once I pay for a mastery pass I should be able to have access to it until I complete each level. I should be able to see all my mastery passes in my profile and select which one I want to work through. Once completed you get a little gold star and get to stare at it whenever you want and then work on the next pass. Old passes could be sold on the store page and I would give you lots of money for them. That is it. I would be totally satisfied. I could go to work and earn money only to hand it directly to you so that I can play my favorite game the way that I want to play it.

It’s what one expects, although some minor issues ensue
Magic Arena is definitely a good game to play on PC and the idea of it being ported onto mobile devices is no easy task, and I think that for the most part the game looks and feels fine when it works as intended. As of writing the mobile version has been out for two days so hopefully by then the issues I state will be fixed. The only issues I have with Arena on mobile is that the ui is a direct copy of the PC’s version, making the screen seem much smaller than it is which can make it hard for some people to see what to press if they want to access their decks for example. Every time I boot up the game I keep getting a “asset error” when there’s nothing wrong with how stuff looks so I have to wait a bit to load into the main menus. Lastly whenever you tutor for a card or have a large board state the game becomes clunky as you can either type the card you want through a filter or search for it manually and have to use a scroll bar instead of just swiping; with large boardstates the game arranges your cards in a linear row instead of a large square like in the PC version so if you want to activate a creatures ability you swipe to scroll across your creatures which makes the game lag for a bit, and the overall size of what makes the game struggle is yet to be determined as I’ve only encountered this about two times.

Awesomeness
I’ve played other TCGs like yu gi oh and such but you can really tell just how much love Wizards of the coast employees have for this game. You can tell that great care goes into card balancing and new mechanics. The constantly rotating sets keep the game fresh too. I just wanna give a shout out to everyone at wizards to keep up the good work, truly what a terrific game. I will say I’m not a huge fan of alchemy (the online only format with online only cards) but that’s just cause I’m a purist. I just don’t see a point in it as long as the legit paper tournaments never pick up the format, that being said I can appreciate the effort in trying to create something new for the online players. There is a legitimate competitive scene to this game that even extends online which I think is amazing!!(cash prizes if that motivates the competitor in you) I can’t stress enough how great I think it is that you can qualify for paper tournaments and world tour from online, I hope it keeps up in the post-covid era. Even if it doesn’t this is a great place to start with easy to understand tutorials for the uninitiated. try out all sorts of stuff, play around with a bunch of different cards, and maybe test your new paper line-up to buy and play at your local FNM. All in all a 5/5 for me, keep up the good work wizards!!!

Great way to bring MTG online, but a few suggestions!
So I love this game, don’t get me wrong. I’ve always liked Magic: the gathering, quite possibly my favorite game of all time, however, I do have a few suggestions, as the devs may know, there are younger players to the game, as well as people who aren’t strong deck builders. So, in a future update, possibly add an auto deck builder? Where a player can choose 1-3 mana types and 1-2 seasons (I’ll just call them that) then select auto build, an AI could then assemble a good deck but not one that’s too powerful, since that would be unfair toward new players instantly building OP decks, but it’d also help people catch up when ban waves occur, that way they don’t have to think of what will work best. Just an idea! Also, maybe fix matchmaking? Since I’m not too amazing at this game but I’ll get out against someone who beats me in a few turns because of the skill gap, or I’ll rob people of a win because I’m so much better, so maybe add an AI that takes someone’s win rate and pair it with someone that has an identical or similar win rate. But aside from those two things, this game is the best on the App Store and in card games I’ve played. Keep up the killer work! Or don’t. I know this isn’t exactly easy.

Fun but has issues
This game is stunning as well as very fun. If you are a fan of trading card games then this is a must download for you. The reasons why I am only rating this game 3 out of 5 stars is because of two reasons. Reason one, is the horrendous card shuffling algorithm in best out of three matches. (Check out Reddit forum regarding this issue, everyone complains about it). The algorithm is so bad that it is obviously unrealistic of how draw phases would occur in real life. The algorithm in single matches is absolutely great, I have no clue why the developers decided to completely change the algorithm in best out of 3 matches when they could’ve just kept the same algorithm as in singles for those type of matches. I am consistently diamond rank in the game and this is by far one of the most annoying issues that plaque it. I literally have to turn the game off after one or two set’s of 3, simply because of how frustrating it is and how unrealistic it seems. The second reason is how long it takes the developers to ban a busted card after release, when the card is released they’ll go an entire season of letting players use it and then ban the card afterwards meanwhile we wasted an entire season dealing with this particular card and pay for the seasons mastery pass. I really hope the developers read this review and fix these two issues otherwise this game would get five stars from me.

So much potential but falls flat where it counts
The core game is there so that’s a win but no commander game type which is a huge loss considering it’s all most play nowadays. I still enjoy playing but can’t bring myself to spending actual money on cards since they are useless. You can’t redeem them if you ever stop playing,or sell them off / trade them which is a BIG part of Magic. At least put codes in booster packs to redeem in Arena, it would boost sales of physical and digital cards so much. If I could buy packs then redeem them in Arena I could practice with decks I’ve built IRL and would be more then willing to buy digital cards I’m missing just to practice in downtime and try new cards out in my decks. It’s almost like they just gave a rough explanation of the rules to a group of programmers that have never played before and this was the result. The last main flaw is the way the app updates. It will not auto update and it seems like once a week there is a big update (500mb- 1.5gb) so many times I’ve been on my lunch break or out of town and wanted to get a quick match’s in only to have the app refuse to start. Go to re download it here from the App Store and see there is an update. Why is it that every single app I have auto updates when I’m connected to WiFi but this one? You are a multi million dollar company and make bags of cash off this app but can’t get the basics of it down.

Good game bad matchmaking
As someone who is new to MTG I was looking forward to trying out the app to get more familiar with the game and to play matches as I don’t have many people to play with in person. To start I had to delete and redownload the app 3 times because it kept telling me there was not enough disk space to open. After the third attempt I was able to create an account and log in. The bot games are fun and the starter training matches are good. Unfortunately once you start playing other people it becomes very difficult to win. I expected this as I am new but I can’t tell if the matchmaking is awful or if there are a lot of smurfs. Completing the current event in near impossible without playing dozens of games and hoping you match with someone of similar playing ability. You have to win a match to get the starter deck you selected to play with but then you get paired with players who have high power deck builds so you end up losing unreasonably fast. Then the games you do get close to winning the other player resigns before they lose. I just want to have fun and learn a new game but the unbalanced matchmaking and tech issues with the app won’t encourage me to use it for anything other than bot matches or matches with friends. Other tech issues of note: -redeemed a pack I bought in person online but the pack shows as empty in the app. -lagging so the match timer runs out while waiting for your selection to register

Not for you
I played this often on when I got to iOS. Well, I liked it pay to win was very strong. A lot of people had a habit of trying to time you out if they knew they were gonna lose. They would just not play and let the time run out, hoping you will quit before them the other thing is for anyone that has reading disabilities, it’s not fairly friendly it doesn’t have a program or allows you have a chance to read what the card does. It also doesn’t have a lot of options end up you’re playing one set or one type of card set for a while it has no commander and also a lot of times when new cards come in the end up, forcing you to abandon a deck that you might’ve liked or made, the other prom is occasionally kick you off or trying to find games for you might be taking forever. I kinda wish they also allow you to play two player or co-op or maybe if you want to play your own time allow you to go against the AI and do some of your challenges with fighting with the AI. there are times that I just don’t wanna play against other players. I just wanna play my deck and get more cards. There is so many things that it feels that is just lacking, especially the constantly the format with how these cars are all playing. I wish they allow you to have demos of how the new decks will work on the new cards will work, but if you really repetitive and time this game might be for you

MTG Veteran of 20 years
It’s sad that the platform is so amazing to play magic on yet the algorithm that dictates card draw and starting hands is so bad that out of the thousands of games I’ve played very very few have felt like actual over the board play. The amount of times I can draw 5,6,7 lands in a row in a deck that has 22 lands is ridiculous. Same goes for the inverse. 28 lands? Well enjoy 7/10 of your games being mana starved while drawing the same 3 spells over and over while you ask your self if you forgot to put the other cards in the deck too. Conclusion: it’s obvious at least to me that the game does this as a roundabout way to get me to spend money on cards that I might think I need in order to win (Example: you build a new deck because you lost to it 3 games in a row and it looked fun to play. Wildcards spent and deck built. You hop into a match only to immediately lose to something that seemingly has a good match up against you or maybe they drew very well to decide the match easily. This happens 2 or 3 more times and you wonder if you should build a new deck because this one isn’t good or maybe you don’t feel like your playing it correctly.) I really would love to recommend this to people and as someone who has taught so many people to play magic I cannot in good faith direct them into this experience knowing how oppressive the game already is for new players then you add a layer of algorithmic manipulation and those players are not gonna stay for long.

Well is just wasn’t friendly to a New player…
So firstly I’ll say this I don’t know much about magic and what I do know is all from this game which did give me a basic understanding of how the mechanics work, however the tutorial was decent but not enough to be thrown in with actual players who know what they’re doing and have built their own decks, that brings me to the next thing getting cards is way too hard…. Like so hard to the point that I wanted to spend money which is probably what you want however I didn’t because I realized that even tho the concept seemed cool the underlying mechanics of the game were too complicated and not explained well enough for a new player to want to keep playing especially when all I’ve really done in two days is barley win against the bot and lose every single match I’ve been in because I can’t get any new cards without paying for them…. It has potential but it’s just not a good port to mobile I think I read another review from a year ago that explained how tiny the words are and how the UI isn’t that user friendly and it’s still that way I took me 15mins of poking around the main screen to figure out of to get into a standard game and then when I got there I couldn’t use any of the decks that the game just built for me… and I didn’t have any cards or know what cards to replace the cards I couldn’t use with it was just a big mess and I really don’t recommend this app I think I’ll stick to building a irl deck and learn that way.

Too many bugs
The game itself? Beautiful. They have so many different variations and art works of cards, the tutorial is great if you’ve never played magic and would like to get into it. However, the app crashes way too frequently. I’d say once every 2-3 games it’ll just crash for no reason and by the time you’re able to load back into the app your turn has been skipped which is a make or break point in matches. The app also runs terribly slow for no reason, the game itself can’t process multiple chain reactions or card plays at once and will freeze or slow down so bad you skip your turn, or it’ll simply crash and skip your turn. And at least once every month or two they’ll encounter a bug where you can’t log in, or have no network connection, etc. and have to wait 2-4 days until the devs fix the issue (which btw, there are only 2 devs who work on the app which is probably why there are so many issues). Also, cards with ward are broke, for some reason if your game crashes and you load back in, any cards on the field that have ward 1-4, can’t be targeted at all. So you or your opponent can’t even attempt to pay the ward cost to affect a creature and they basically become invincible. Also dungeon cards will just throw you into the next room if your app crashes even if it’s a 1 time play. There are so many issues with the game, I enjoy magic but this app is too frustrating to run

Game has potential, but isn’t there yet
A long time MTG fan, I was ecstatic when I heard that Arena was coming to mobile. The game looked interesting, and I hoped to play as much as I could. However, after playing the game for a few weeks, I started to find the glaring flaws that just kept on presenting themselves. For one, the card economy is a mess. Getting the specific card you want requires wildcards, which are only attainable through opening vast amounts of packs. These packs are technically able to be earned through challenges, but in no where near a large enough quantity to facilitate brewing multiple fairly strong decks. This over the top pay-to-play aspect is in of itself enough to discourage me from recommending this game to other people. That being said, this excessive cost may have been able to be overlooked if not for the other problem with Arena. Frankly, the game does not work well. I’ve had multiple matches in which I was unable to tap lands, or activate abilities of creatures for no reason but Arena not responding to it. I play on a new 2020 iPad, which works perfectly well for other games (and even for other parts of Arena) but the random inability to input has cost me quite a few games. So all in all, despite my initial excitement and love for MTG, I can’t recommend new players to Arena in good faith. I look forward to potential future updates to the client, and hope this problems can be fixed going forward.

From Newbie to Seasoned
I downloaded this app when my boyfriend introduced me to the game in real life. I played Yugioh all the time before being introduced to MTG so I picked it up quicker with just a few adjustments to gameplay rules. My boyfriend and I played commander with real decks so transitioning to standard play was a bit of an adjustment but I loved it! It took a little bit of playing to start unlocking cards for a good deck to play in the ranked games, but I’ve ended up in the gold-platinum ranking every time! If I was willing to play more decks that included black cards I’d probably get higher but black isn’t my favorite card type to play. My boyfriend definitely noticed a difference the more I played in the MTG app. He said I was rapidly becoming more of a strategic player in commander and I started winning about 50% of our games pretty fast! I really love the app and all the cards we have access too! I just wish different land cards came up more often in the store. I like to see all the different basic land styles for real life game play and I wish I could add them to my virtual decks! Highly recommend this app! I have never spent any real money on this game and I still enjoy it immensely!!

Love and hate balance perfection
I love this game as this was the only thing that kept me alive during my breakdowns by being bullied back in Tempe 90’s, the game itself is already beyond my expectations and I think I won’t be able to play as good as I do here on the physical form anymore. On the other hand, my complaint is that the shuffling of the deck is very bad, terrible, almost impossible to understand. I have made my math and for the past 87 games, 7 out of 10 losses is because of the terrible shuffling that leaves me always with no lands. This is on top of having a 60% deck with lands only and not even that helps compensating the results. The physical deck was supposed to have no more than 30% of lands and it worked perfectly. There’s something very off about the shuffling algorithm in any digital game, it will never be a natural outcome. I think that’s the only thing that is imposible to digitally accomplish to mimic the real world and it’s very upsetting and frustrating. And last but not least, the toxic cards idea is the worst thing!, nothing like a good normal game length as toxic cuts the game in half by having 10 counters to lose the game, maybe cards that remove toxic counters like when you gain life too. I don’t know but that was purely evil in a fast-food/fast-gaming way of thinking.

Try it out, just try not to spend.
I’ve played for a good year now and even say I enjoyed the game. Sure the rigged matchmaking and shuffler were noticeable, but it wasn’t blatant enough to drain the amount of fun I’ve had playing this. Then I hit mythic once, and suddenly ranked became a mountain climb. Not that it wasn’t before, but imagine if on your next attempt several ledges or footholds were rigged to crumble and send you tumbling. That was when I started paying double what I used to spend on packs, to try working around the new meta of the new sets, and when I even bothered building a meta deck, you’d more times than not face your weaknesses or a mirror match. Once the game finds out you spend more to try working around matchmaking they’ll give you more absurd match-ups. Around this time was when I started experiencing those disgusting streaks of losses, and when you finally seesaw back to where you were, you hit another losing streak. Not fun losses, just the right match-up to shut down your equipped deck. There were times I’ve even had difficulty breaking out of silver to gold, a far cry from my first few experiences. The worst of it? I’ve served my purpose. This game sucked a few hundred out of my wallet over the year, and regardless of whether I stick around or quit, it won’t affect the company. Once you purchase your first mastery set you’ve given them all they needed from you.

Good for learning, trash for sustained play.
This app is so well made and has a great tutorial that is super helpful for learning the game. Beyond that the actual game itself is ruined by over the top algorithms. They have taken every ounce of randomness out of a card game (I understand true randomness is not plausible on an operating system) to the point you can tell from starting hands if you are supposed to win the match or if you are supposed to lose. Granted there are plenty of good close games. But the game decides who wins and loses and it is very clear when you are supposed to lose. I play paper magic weekly so I’m well aware of mana floods, droughts, bad hands etc. but this app is very different. If you have a card that maybe isn’t the best for your deck, you are going to have that card in your starting hand almost every time. You’re on a winning streak? The game will decide it’s time for you to lose to get that win/loss ratio back down to 50% by giving you impossible hands, even on a well built deck. It’s a hopeless feeling and I’m not one to concede 5 times in a row just so I can possibly have a good match. This is especially frustrating when you pay gold or gems for an event only to find that even after a mulligan or two you are given impossible hands because it is simply not your turn to win. This game needs more randomness in the draws and WAY less algorithms deciding who wins and who loses.

It’s Magic on the phone
This is Magic Arena on the phone. It’s very easily my favorite mobile game to come out for years. It is a bit buggy, has some random errors but overall the game is how it is on PC. Did I mention they’re working on it constantly so the bugs that you see are often fixed within 2 weeks. Update: this is the first time I’ve been able to play 100 Card Historic Brawl on here and it is the most fun I’ve had in any MTG game I’ve ever played. If you don’t add this game mode to the play queue options I will be extremely disappointed. This is the first time I’ve seen cards I’ve never seen before used. Please listen to your fan base and make this a normal game mode. Update 2: They have officially added Historic Brawl, I wish it had 30-40 life. Overall I still find this game amazing. Bugs are rare. Occasional error. But for the most part it’s a truly amazing game experience. I don’t think I’ll play paper magic the same. After the amount of hours I’ve locked in I know I’ve trained for paper Magic when I do play. Update 3: a few issues with Historic Brawl and Friendly Brawl wanting alchemy cards to be differently used. Still super fun.

Worst card draw RNG mechanics I’ve ever seen…
Been playing MTG for about 25 years now, and never in my life have I had gotten 15 lands in a row, or built a deck with four of every card. I need to run a combo and not gotten a single one until turns seven or more. They don’t use a truly random number generator to shuffle your deck. After looking into the mechanics of arena, they use a point value system and assign different cards point values and they have an algorithm that tries to feed you a certain combination for decent starting hands. The problem with this though is that you sometimes will end up getting either too much land or may be a single card that you need but then you won’t get anything else after that for several turns. I’ve had to concede too many times because either the algorithm is feeding me straight land for several turns in a row, or I get a decent starting hand and after that nothing, this would never happen in real life if you shuffle your deck properly. I don’t know what it’s going to take for them to fix this issue or if it will ever get resolved, but it has been an issue since I started playing the game when it came out. The game is designed very well visually and it’s nice that they have updated it regularly. Other than that the game is mid at best. I’m wary to make even perfectly balanced decks or ones I have pulled off-line that run well, because the rng is bad

Rigged
I’ve been an MTG player for about 15 years. Built Tier 1 decks for other people, for money. A few of them have won competitions, my own decks have as well. I say that because I know what I’m doing. I know the mechanics of the game quite well. This game is free, and you win quite a bit in the beginning, but if you’re a player that doesn’t spend any money, eventually, you’re going to encounter opponents that have perfectly matched counters for everything you throw out. Or it’ll match you against unbelievably powerful decks, that people have paid for. I already spend a ton of money on MTG decks, I’m not going to do it in MTGA. Your guys’ algorithm should match paying players, with other paying players, so it’s fair. And do the same for non paying players, against other non-paying players. I understand losing about half the time, but it gets ridiculous when you play ten games, and win one, two, or zero. I’ve paid a little money on this game to test my theory, and my luck changes for the better every single time! Imagine that! No one likes getting beat up guys, and I feel it is done so the non-paying players either get mad and quit, or they start paying money for better cards. I understand this app is supposed to make money, but the decks shouldn’t be stacked against those that don’t have the budget to pay.

Thank goodness for the New Cappena Update.
Up 2 stars (4/5) ****The latest update for New Cappena, made everything load faster 1 minute as opposed to 3 minutes and eliminated about 75% of the crashes, now crashes about every 6-10 games instead every 1-3 games. Plus the reload is fast enough that you can usually get back to the game before you get a time out loss. The lagginess is way less common. Nice work! Old review 2/5 stars Excellent representation of the most fun and complex game around. All of things that make MTG the best: deck building, playing against friends or people from around the world, customizing your strategies and testing it out against Ai, and blinging cards out. But Arena is BUGGY and UNSTABLE on the iPad! Every third or fourth game, CRASH! You LOSE! Now wait for 3 minutes (or more) for the app to reload so you can get back to the game, nope- you lost, now you will need to wait for a new opponent… this gets REALLY BORING! I would love to enter some of the tournaments, but I am not willing to throw money away just to get crashed out of tournament waiting the FRUSTRATINGLY BORING three minutes while the app restarts to see Defeated. I really want to give you more stars and purchase more games and cards. PLEASE FIX! I am about to delete.

Great game aside from two things
I really love this app and it is vastly superior to the old Magic Duels app, but there are a couple things I wish this app had. First, I wish there was an easier way to get card packs instead of buying gems with real money and grinding for several hours to earn enough coins for just one pack. Also, I wish there was an option/mode where one could put together whatever kind of deck they wanted to with the cards in the game’s database without having to buy them first. However, as a trade off, you wouldn’t be able to play against other people due to the possibility of using cards not in the standard rotation. I also think playing against the AI would be required if one was to make a deck with cards from all sorts of different sets. It’s just that I’ve always enjoyed deckbuilding and experimentation with all manner of creature types and mana colors, and it really stinks when you’re forced to only use cards that you’ve bought/earned along with the decks you start with. If they added these features, I would find myself having even more fun than before. App is still great, though!

Game freezes
I’m a little different from a lot of these players as I started only in 2015 on Xbox and became hooked. Strangely enough, only to the 2015 version (hated every Xbox version afterwards due to color scheme). I love this game and play anywhere from 10-50 matches a day, it’s my go to entertainment. For that reason, I don’t have complaints about getting cards- I play a lot and enjoy the cards I have and the wildcard collection I’ve built. I have bought the season pass a couple times and it is worth it if you play often but I don’t outright buy gems personally. I love the every day deals and how they’re actually decent deals. My only complaint is the game freezes, often causing you to lose rank matches especially if you don’t notice it on time which happens especially if it freezes on your opponents turn. My game takes about 35-40 seconds to start and sometimes even longer to load on the “waiting for player” screen which is confusing and frustrating. This review is for the last version technically because they’re updating as I write this but I’ve had this issue for about 4 months now and know other people in person that have had this issue from the start.

Great Application
This is everything I wanted in a mobile app for MTG Arena. I had already been playing since Beta initially released. I was one of the vocal fans pleading for a mobile port. I love being able to play wherever I am at. The only issue I have is the lack of a multiplayer option and the likelihood that its never going to happen. I miss the days in MTGO when we had 2HG. That is my favorite format. Now I play mostly brawl but that is fun too. The issue I have with standard is more of a how magic works issue and has nothing to do with the app itself. The app itself is not without its flaws but they regularly update it and are always adjusting things. I appreciate that. The lack of trading or even being able to craft cards into desired cards is annoying. It’s greedy and I don’t like it. Yet, even with that said, MTG Arena is less expensive to play than paper or MTGO. Anyone complaining about cost just wants everything to be free. Sorry MTG has always been a game that cost to play. You also can build off of the free component so its not pay to play like some say either. It’s just a matter of how you play.

Charged twice
I was charged 40$ when I only spent 20$ today. I want a refund please. I tried to confirm my email but that is not working so I am unable to even access basic support services. So they 2 hours I’ve just wasted trying to figure this out has really turned me off this game. The lack of being able to see orders is a huge sore point with me the lack of support available. Is there trading? It is a trading card game after all? Am I just missing something I am hoping trading becomes a feature otherwise this is just a waste of money and time. It’s like other programs you’ve made in the past for consoles and pc’s you spend all this money for nothing because you can’t turn the set into paper. If you don’t have a market or trading system and a way to complete sets and be able to get paper cards people would be more likely to drop large wads of cash on this. But it’s annoying the only way to get cards is to find them and then use the clone feature to make another. Those are some major drawbacks. I have the pc version and those cards still hold value and can be traded. It would be nice if those cards would be transferable. That would make a ton of people thrilled and you a lot more money. Please help with the double charge today. Or somehow reset my account I’m getting the confirm emails but it keeps giving me an error.

This game will make you throw your phone
This game is predatory and nothing like the original card game in many ways. Wizards should be ashamed for what theyʻve done to a great legendary game. Theyʻve ruined it by best of one and by overpowering certain groups of cards (lifegain, angels, goblins, elves, vampires) to appease the fairweather fans. Now games dont last more than 2-5 turns and its all about winning gold and not about having funs with friends anymore. They ban the wrong cards constantly so that other more powerful cards take over. Well i have been playing since 1995 and i will NEVER give wizards another dollar. Arena is strictly made to get you addicted to the game and it is not worth it, in the end you will throw your phone and write a bad review just like me. I dont hate anything but now i hate this game. Deleted forever and I will be selling my actual card collection now. This game will make you angry even if your not an angry person because of how absurd theyʻve made it. Stop giving Wizards of the coast and hasbro your money they do not care about their fanbase at all. Cheers - no longer a fan. Not to mention digital alchemy only cards, rigged matchmaking, rigged shuffler, terrible game economy and the list of oversights and glitches have also ruined the game. Wizards is the only one who benefits from torturing the fans and exploiting them constantly in the name of “fun”.

Buggy and inconsistent
I am absolutely obsessed with Magic the Gathering and while MtG Arena looks very nice, the struggle begins where the visuals end. This app sees consistent and recurring bugs that seem to get resolved in patches just to resurface every update. Why are things as simple as still images and visual overlays always glitched out? On top of that, connection issues aren’t just typical, they are apart of gameplay. Developers might even call it a feature. It’s not uncommon for matches to be decided by whoever can play the longest without lagging out or outright disconnecting. This is a frustrating way to experience a very fun game. Also I feel like the shuffler is picking sides because I have seen a statistically improbable frequency of statistically improbable land distributions come out of my library while my opponent always seems to be able to play on curve when it’s always feast or famine for me never the happy middle but that may just be confirmation bias. There was only a 15% chance to draw that 7th land in a row with only three lands total left in deck and how come it’s without fail the last draft game that seems to disconnect you from the server!? Im just seething a little. They’re nice if you report your disconnect with a bug report. Often you can get a refund, but it’s annoying to do that every time. I’d prefer to just play a functional game.

Very good MTG game but has a fatal flaw.
To start, this is the best MTG game I've played on any platform. That isn't saying a lot, since most other games aren't great, but at its heart, Arena is a very good representation of the real thing and very well made. All of this to say, the game has a fatal flaw that, once you get to a certain point, makes the game unfun and nearly unplayable if you are trying to play the competitive modes. This is the "random" shuffling of the deck. Obviously this is algorithm based and appears to be random, but after playing a good number is games, it appears to not be so random and designed to keep you from ranking up as fast as you normally would. After 1-2 wins (and especially if you get 3 consecutive wins) it is almost a given that you will get a terrible initial pull off cards and have to mulligan and not just once but often several times. On top of this, too will get mana screwed in these games to nearly guarantee that you lose. I'm talking pulling 7-8 straight lands in some cases. 1/3 of its total lands consecutively which is almost unheard of, and yet, happens to me on a regular basis. It's beyond frustrating to watch a game that you know you would at least compete in, and likely win with even a decent run from your deck, just to watch yourself get buried by the deck algorithm.

Great App but Could be More Beginner Friendly
As someone who has played Magic off and on for years, I think this app has really optimized the deck building aspect of the game, which was often lacking in previous apps/games. All-in-all this app runs very smoothly and it’s quick and easy to get into games. I only really have two complaints: 1) the game frequently freezes (maybe once every 10ish games) and requires a hard restart. Very frustrating when you’re mid-game. 2) I don’t think this is very well targeted to new magic players. The different playlists (standard, alchemy, historic) are not really well explained and it’s not even very intuitive how to even start your first game in the app. More importantly however, unlike past Magic games I’ve played there doesn’t seem to be a lot of mercy for new players who are still trying to understand the core mechanics. Nearly everyone in unranked is using 2 or 3 color decks that are very well designed and utilize a lot of different/complex card abilities. I’d imagine it would be pretty difficult for a new player to keep up, even with the pre-made decks provided.

Must have app!
Arena is an amazing game, the game does an amazing job at explaining how magic works, game strategies, and is easy to understand in general. Many people are complaining about lag with large board states, but it is as mentioned, with large board states only. That is to be expected as the game has to keep track of both the opponent’s board state and your board state. This involves so many various mechanics that it would be expected to have lag. The only other complaint that I could possibly think of is acquirement of cards. The wildcard system makes sense, but it is highly slanted towards players who make in game purchases. I think that it should be a bit more friendly towards free to play users but I still think that is an amazing piece of software. But that most recent complaint is of course very minor and is outweighed by the fact that Arena is free, so they have to make money in some way or form to keep it going. So in short, it does have its flaws, but what app doesn’t. I think that the developers have done an amazing job at bringing arena to mobile and don’t get enough credit.

Played MTG since ‘94 - uninstalled and not coming back
Hasbro and WotC, when you think they couldn’t be more tone deaf and greedy, just give them a week to find a way. People begged for Historic Brawl queues, so they charged for them and doled them out every few months. They finally added them and it was great to brew new historic decks using cards that would otherwise be dormant with out any way to recycle them (another massive issue they refuse to address). The most recent update of Alchemy ruins and upends the cards I thought would be safe to craft and use. Now at anytime they can change the functionality of the cards and not provide a refund of the cards I spent money on. The new cards they released with this update are so ridiculously pushed that they will be changed only after enough people craft them with the possibility of refunds. Even worse they will have two versions of the same card in the client, a paper version as printed in the normally game and the “Alchemy” version which can be changed at anytime. If WotC wanted to do Alchemy, they should have made it a new game on its own based on MTG. What they have done with Arena is just inexcusable. Deleted two weeks ago with the Alchemy announcement and won’t look back. I’ll stick to my paper collection that I won’t have to worry that the card will say something different week to week.

Fun buggy mess now with less fun and more bugs
With the newest update they have nerfed a bunch of cards without replacing any of them with wildcards. Meaning that not only are a ton of cards now unplayable in all of the formats, you can’t even replace the cards with actually good ones. Good luck trying to fix your decks in a reasonable amount of time now either because not only is their GUI still ugly and hard to navigate but also slow and prone to crashing. Also they didn’t nerf the actual problem cards in the formats so competitive play will continue to be unbalanced in favor of 2-3 tier 0 decks that have been a problem for a while. Good news tho, they finally have introduced historic brawl! After 2 years of everyone asking for it constantly. The creators of the game are slow to listen to criticism and even more slow to respond. Not that they care because the economy for the game is so garbage you’re better off staying f2p. I’ve sunk hundreds of dollars into this game and now it is not fun and I can’t get a refund on all of the packs I bought( because of course you can’t just buy the cards you want in a 100% digital game). Therefore I am done, and will wait for WOTC to abandon this game like they have done their previous clients and I might do f2p on their next version.

This game 100% rigged
I’ve played this game off and on since 2020 and I know for a FACT it is 100% rigged and it is rigged often. Whatever program shuffles the cards does not do so truly randomly. Your opening hands and subsequent draws are also “weighted” meaning you are more likely to draw certain cards over others rather than a random card from a shuffled deck. The matchmaking is also weighted and rigged. If you win too much the matchmaker will begin oddly pitting you against the exact counter decks over and over. And guess what? You’ll never be able to have a random starting hand or be able to top deck cards you need to win that match. It just will not happen. And YES this rigging does occur in PAID events. When you enter a 2000 “gem” draft that you pay real money for the matchmaking is totally rigged and no you will not go undefeated or even come out even because the game does not randomly match you. The game chooses the winner based on some “fairness algorithm” and not based on who actually does better. Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro wokeness is coming through. Random isn’t fair and can’t be milked for cash reliably so MTG Arena is rigged from top to bottom. Arena could make MORE money if it was fixed and developers released their control of outcomes. They’ll probably just continue to gaslight us and say it’s not real. It 100% is.

Fun, but many bugs
I just got into Magic in general recently. Having a great time, but Arena is very buggy lately. I use Coveted Prize I think it’s called, to choose a card from my deck and it doesn’t select the one I’m trying to pick. Even if I hold my finger on the card to make sure it’s choosing the right one, it will not select my Kaya planeswalker. It chooses Leonin Bc they’re next to each other as they’re of the same mana level. It also doesn’t always add the counters I’m supposed to get on my creatures I choose and one other thing I can’t remember off the top of my head. But for a game you put a decent amount of money into, with bugs that are “make it or break it” as far as winning games this isn’t really acceptable. I only play Magic in person with friends once a week or so, and this is turning me away from Arena which I usually play daily. I would love a response from the game addressing these issues, but I won’t get my hopes up. If nothing happens, just out of principle I’m deleting the game and telling everyone I know that also plays what’s happening. I hope that’s not the case though, I do enjoy the game when it works correctly. TL:DR game is fun but doesn’t work like it’s supposed to, so be cautious before spending any money. We’ll see if they respond or not. I’m happy to change my review if this gets addressed.

Pc 10 Mobile 7
Magic on PC is flawless; Magic on Mobile is good. Only issue I seem to have on mobile is when I have too many creatures on the field it’s very hard to scroll through and access any individual creature. The game keeps adding cards to the right of any creatures on the field, so when you have more than can fit on the screen the ones on the left and right start to disappear offscreen and can be accessed by scrolling with your finger left and right; but this is semi functional and very frustrating. So often the timer will appear before being able to access all your creatures when ,say, an opponent attacks with 10+ creatures and you need to assign blockers. Very frustrating; I have lost games because the timer has run out and the game just won’t allow me to scroll to the creatures I need to get to on the field. Only on mobile I’ve had that issue. On Pc this game is the bees knees. The animations for card effects or entry are hyper detailed. The field of view is huge and there’s isn’t that scrolling issue. Honestly Great game

Shuffling is broken
I don’t care how many lands I put in a deck shuffling is broken. Every other game I will have 5-6 draws of nothing but lands, or 5-6 draws of no lands. Even if I have 20 lands in a 60 card deck like is suggested and cards that allow me to draw during my turn…it doesn’t matter. Every other game I'm either going to get screwed and have no land draws for six turns or I’m going to draw nothing but land. I’ve literally gone the last two days from platinum tier 3, last win till ranking up…to platinum tier 4 win lose win lose win lose win lose win lose because of shuffling. I also seem to draw the same card I have one of almost EVERY single game. Even when I take a mulligan this card ends up in my hand over cards I have sets of 4 of in the deck…and won’t draw any of the cards I have sets of four of. I understand that getting mana screwed is part of MTG…I’ve played for a long time. But losing 10 times in a row because I can’t draw a land with 20-24 lands in a 60 card deck for six turns or draw nothing but land for 6 turns after the start of the game nearly every single match tells me something is broken. It wasn’t this way until the recent update. I was platinum tier 1 last week…this week I can’t get more than one win in tier 4.

Connection and server problems
I really like this game but it has a lot of flaws. In starting off the game they have the player do the color challenge before they can access other game modes. I like this it allows the player to learn the game, unfortunately in my experience it is not completable because we the player tries to do the last challenge of each color the waiting for server sign pops up and freezes the game so you have to exit and reload just for it to freeze again because there is nothing else you can do. Because the challenges cannot be completed the player can’t use any other game mode. I was however able to find that the player can turn that block of but only after thoroughly exploring the settings and whatnot. This would have been a nice thing for the makers of the app to include on the home screen so players actually know about it. Another this is that recently the app has not allowed me a player to open the app. It goes to a black screen and then says disconnected please reconnect to continue and goes to a black screen. In going through the trouble shooting steps was not helpful. And trying to contact support has proven tedious and inconvenient. I hope that the company can address these issues so that players like me can start to enjoy the game again.

Buy paper, not this
Been here on arena since day one, been playing MTG on paper since ‘97. Arena used to be super fun to play a smattering of people with various levels of decks, you could even win gems in drafts. Not anymore, you’ll have to pay now. You’ll have to pay to make it in ranked or if you want some cool new sleeves or a pet or avatar. You WILL be “matched” against decks with a higher win rate against decks of your type. Your hand and subsequent drawing WILL be predetermined based upon the mana costs (if your average cost is 3, it will lock you out at 2 lands) and rarity of cards in your deck to force a lower win rate. You WILL lose to decks with 250 cards (which would never happen in real life). Don’t expect random draws and random opponents, that would be enjoyable, if you pay though…. You’ll win a lot. Bad news for the paper game cause if anyone transitions to paper they will see how it really works and constantly lose to subpar decks. Is it so hard to make random matches and random shuffles? I love collecting the cards and finding mechanics to turn to paper. So, now I just rip through the daily challenges with two drop decks to get coins that buy packs. The rest of the game is pretty trashy. Even though I hit mythic every month, it’s frustrating because it is so obvious that it is a pay to win scenario.

Too Frustrating Campaign
The campaign gets way too difficult too early on. Especially for players who have not played any or very much magic before, it gets really frustrating. There are several matches towards the beginning of the campaign where if you mess up one play, it’s over and you have to start the entire thing over. That is realistic towards the card game, but it is not appealing to new players who are unfamiliar with all the many different mechanics. The game waits for you to lose to give tips that are absolutely necessary to win in the campaign situation, and even with those tips, you still have to follow an exact pattern of moves to even have a chance. To make they game better and keep new or newer player interested, while also not frustrating experienced players, there should be tips/ more tutorial options that someone can turn on or off. When playing against a bot in the campaign, it would also be much more enjoyable if you could save your progress in a match so if you leave the app for two seconds or make a mistake, you can go back without having to go through the same annoying long set up of the match again. This game does too much trial by fire in the beginning teaching you very specific mechanics in a way that is not enjoyable at all to newcomers

I love this game but there is still room for improvement.
I have played magic for over 15 years and this app has rejuvenated my passion for standard. The one major downside to this app is it crashes on my IPad all the time I do not have this issue on my computer but if I play for an hour the app will crash 4 to 5 times. Luckily they have made it to where you can easily rejoin games you have been kicked from. I am really looking forward to them adding 100 card brawl as commander is my favorite format. It would be a dream come true if you could play 4 person commander game on this app with my friends. My other suggestion is that they should add some kind of trade in system to simulate selling unwanted cards. An example being where you could trade in 2 possibly 3 (I know it has to be stingy this is buisiness) unwanted cards of a certain rarity for wild cards of a similar rarity. If this game had this feature I would be much more likely to sink money into boosters. Thanks for putting so much effort into this excellent product if you continue to improve and support free to play I will continue to want to pay more money.

Still Rigged, Notes on Community
Rigged play, the game is not playable for long. Drawing is not realistic and stacked against you. You are playing against your opponent as well as the program. Need certain cards later in the game? Prepare to draw them early. No cards in hand? Prepare to draw many lands. Struggle against certain decks? Prepare to face them often. Need certain cards? All four are hidden in the bottom half. Win a few games? Prepare for a long losing streak. Not only drawing, but matchups are rigged. Related complaints on customer service page were consolidated into one big comment. Agree with other reviews which said: 1) it's rigged to make new players think they need to spend more, and 2) the themes are becoming woke.... Notes about the community: some use the communication feature to display goodwill, but others use it in a sarcastic, self aggrandizing way. They also: 1) use the timer to make you wait when it's apparent they are about to lose, 2) form decks they wouldn't otherwise play to oppose your deck if they can't otherwise win, and 3) copy the same decks, which is why you often see the same five or so (apparently, they are having fun playing the same decks as everyone else (counterspell, goblins and elves). To summarize, a lot of bad behavior and lack of originality.

Developers need to fix freezing and UI
Played Magic in high school. Decided to give Arena a try. Overall enjoying, I now understand all the game modes and card restrictions, rotation, etc. take some time to familiarize yourself with the basic terminology. Overall I’ve been enjoying my time. I like draft cause it’s more balanced and not these cheese Mill decks and other garbage copy cat decks. The mobile version can be a but frustrating at times. The biggest issue is when the game seems to get hung up, that is I am unable to interact with the game and have to randomly click on the screen until I can suddenly interact with cards again. This needs to be resolved NOW by WotC and developers, who I imagine are taking in millions. I’ve also declared blockers but clicking the “block” button doesn’t nothing, forcing a timer wait. One time I went to examine one of my cards, and the game forced me To play it, costing me the game. So in conclusion I enjoy Arena but there are a lot of obvious issues that needs to be fixed on the mobile version, and never play high stakes games (draft), etc. Also, improve some of the rewards, 5 packs for mythic Rank is just lame, to name one.

Bugs & Glitches
I downloaded this game onto my new-ish iPhone that has never had any problems a couple days ago. The app glitched and closed several times during the tutorial, as well as during my finishing move in my first match. I thought that it would get better but it never did. It glitches and closes during about 8/10 matches, and has also screwed with my iPhone itself beyond belief. Even when the app is closed, my phone now freezes and will sometimes die before I’m even down to 20% battery. Plus, it freezes while it’s dying so my phone becomes out of commission for about 30 min at a time when this happens. This has never occurred with any other game on my phone, even the ones with tons of assets and that take up lots of storage. I have lots of free storage anyways, and I make sure to close all other apps and background functions while playing, so I’m at a loss. It’s a fun game and I have no qualms about the UI and gameplay itself, which is why the technical issues are soooo frustrating. I had to delete it because of the multiple consistent issues during game play and that my iPhone is experiencing when the app is completely closed. Now that the game and its data have been removed from my phone, everything’s back to normal. :(

This Game is a Productivity Black Hole
If you are just now getting to the point where you CANNOT win any games (because they stack the hands against you), I highly recommend deleting/uninstalling this game - if you value your time. You are reading the reviews for a reason, right? The match-making algorithm is highly Machiavellian in that it WILL put you at a disadvantage if you are not paying real money. Wizards of the Coast assures their customers that the algorithms are “working as intended”. What this means is that they do not care about replay value or retaining players — only suckering enough beginning players to pay enough to keep money rolling. If they cared about making MTGA great, their marketers probably would have caught on to the notion that they are conditioning people to stop playing. They could be so much more successful if they weren’t so shady and under-handed. The “fairness algorithm” is a DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) scam that favors rigged equality of outcomes (over equal opportunity fair play). Also, there are not enough hours in the day to complete the daily wins in time to make any meaningful progress. Not only do they want to take your money, they want to steal your time as well. I’m so much happier now that I deleted the game. I should have read more reviews before I started.

Poor Matching and low rewards unless you constantly win
This game is fun and as a new player, I have fallen in love with this game, but what really discouraged me from wanting to play more is the fact that you only typically get rewarded for wins. Not only that but it does a poor job of matching with with people your level and card base. So unless you invest tons of money into upgrading decks, you can find yourself losing match after match after match and then got don’t want to play this game anymore. That’s not very helpful when a new player is paired with an experienced player who has a very aggressive and good deck that I just can’t compete against. Every time I get to play a game and then I lose it’s a real turn off because you spend the time to play the game you lose and you get nothing for it so it’s a double whammy because you lose more often than you win and because you invest all that time and losing you get nothing to show for it so this needs to be changed. Think about, Fortnite, for example. you don’t ever have to win a game of Fortnite to unlock your full battle pass and have a great time. They need to make magic more like that where the goal isn’t just winning. It’s about having a good time and you can still win things even when you lose.
