As a Preacher, I am studying as much of the Word as possible. This is my 5th year as a Minister and though there are many commentaries out there to read, I have found that Matthew Henry is by far my favorite. The man was brilliant. Now, I believe that God blessed him with the knowledge obviously, but without him being a willing vessel, it would be very hard to do as this man has done. He wasn’t reading the 1611 KJV that I use. It was after his time, which makes it even more amazing. I love how the app populates each referenced verse in a window without going to a different page. Makes a huge difference. I encourage anyone and everyone to read Mr. Henry’s commentary. If nothing more than to see how God had showed him his interpretation. I don’t agree with everything single thing he has written, but I do see eye to eye with his view of the Bible than anyone else. God is great! 1 Peter 4:8. Charity (love) shall cover THE multitude of sins. Not A multitude, but THE multitude.
I’m very thankful that someone went to the effort to make Matthew Henry’s commentary available as an iPhone app. His comments are theologically sound, comprehensive in their knowledge of Scripture, and invaluable for their application to the lives of believers. Sometimes his comments need to be compared to later commentators, as they were written before the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls,other manuscripts, and extra-biblical works that have provided scholars with a better understanding of the Hebrew and Greek used in the Scriptures. Even with that, there are few who equal him for his practical applications and his ability to convey profound statements in a brief and memorable sentence. The reader should be aware that the punctuation in this version sometimes is missing or incorrect and you need to re-read it with the correct punctuation in your mind.
For many years the printed edition of the Matthew Henry Bible Commentary has been my principal Bible study tool. It has been decisive in my understanding of hundreds of passages, thanks to all the information it provides. Translation from original Hebrew or Greek is one of Bible translations most difficult tasks. The explanation of what it meant in the original language is of enormous help. Also, historic, social, political, background are very helpful. With the app it is way much easier to use anywhere at any time. I don’t have to carry the voluminous book around and research is much faster. It is a huge blessing.
This has been helpful, I can go immediately to my iPad and pull up a verse or some place in the scriptures, and read what is says, to throw more light on a subject. It is so much easier then grabbing my books and looking something up. Thank you. This continues be a marvelous blessing. I appreciate that at my fingertips for free, I have such a valuable resource to compare my thoughts or others to understand the scripture. Thank you for this treasure.

This is the best app for this commentary that i have found. It is very easy to use. I can locate what I’m looking for quickly without difficulty. I have the 6 volume paper books of this commentary and have used it very much over the last 10 years. I tried another app but it was difficult to get to what I wanted to study, so i went back to my book version. Then i saw this app and tried again. I have it on my ipad and enjoy using it very much.
Matthew Henry's Commentary was given to me as a gift over ten years ago and it has transformed my bible reading understanding and comprehension. I used to use my concise version at least once a week for verses I wanted more insight with and or to help me be more prepared to enrich our conversation in small group study. Having the app gives me the full set in my pocket. I have really enjoyed the updates to this app as it is continually improved. Phenomenal app and I would recommend to everyone.
I am amazed how wonderful is this Bible app. It’s a wonderful thing to have God’s Word where you can have it in your phone or tablet where you can bring it with you any time and any where. Using it by personal reading and devotion or use to witness to reach out lost person in order for them to hear the gospel of salvation. I personally did not like the ease, or should I say lack of ease of navigation of this app. I can think of several ways to make this smoother and more pleasant for the user, one being to be able to just tap the book at the top and immediately be able to select a different book instead of having to select the menus bar, then the table of contents, then the book! Unnecessary steps. Anyway, the only reason I have this two stars is because it did at least have a commentary, which was the main thing I was looking for. But for me, not worth it. Please tell me how to return for refund.
As a teacher in an adult Bible class, I have used the Matthew Henry Commentary app MANY times to understand and explain a portion of scripture. It is very insightful! The one down side I have with the app is that there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to go back to the other choices after submitting a search. I have to resubmit the search each time I want to explore all the possibilities. Not a big deal, but it could be made easier.
This is a great app! Many of my books are in storage until my house is built and I so miss having this commentary available to me! The ads scroll across the bottom of the screen and don’t pop up or interfere with reading. When you swipe to the next screen it looks as if the page is turning. Such a fun detail!
I am so grateful to a friend who introduced me to this Commentary. Since then I keep it close by both in print and on my devices. I use it continuously to help with understanding the Holy Scriptures and for clarification and verification of issues that come up daily in life. It is a vital resource to have and I enjoy reading it always.. Thanks to the authors who took the time to out it together….
People’s opinions can be as much a trap as they are a blessing. Matthew Henry’s commentary provides me with opinion that has been shown over time to be supported by those who witness to the truth. “He that seeketh findeth. And to him that knocketh it shall be opened”. The Spirit guides, we trust and Matthew Henry’s Commentary helps us to verify who Jesus Christ is. Also, what he is asking of us…Very helpful guide to avoid “rabbit holes”.
I really appreciate this content having been made available and have sent multiple emails to app creator to compliment his app... BUT there actually is no way on iOS to turn off the scrolling/dancing banner ads for slots, etc. When you are studying the Bible, it would seem reasonable that you could turn off commercials for one short hour a day. Please fix this.
I love it when an app includes more than just a Bible on it. Places to take notes and other features help with doing study in private or public without having to take cumbersome notebooks and other books out in public. It makes it so easy and enjoyable to engage in study and keeps you from having to struggle to keep up with where you put your information.
How beautiful to be reminded of what you should remember. Waking up or going through the day and a reminder pops checking to see if you read the Word blesses me. I enjoy this Matthew Henry commentary so much. I’ve read other versions that leave out punctuation and are very hard to follow. This one is easily navigable, understandable, and has important links to other scriptures embedded. And of course MH continues to astound me with his detailed knowledge and interweaving of Scripture, his understanding of human nature and God’s purpose, and his relevance even now, centuries after he lived.
I initially noticed this was a bit different from our 1986-page hard-cover version, and at first suspected it was abbreviated. Happily found this online copy is the unedited, entire original! It also has internal proof text references accessible by just a tap of the finger. I’m absolutely thrilled with this effort. Kudos to those who created it!
While I have the Matthew Henry commentary on several Bible apps across different platforms, I love to be able to just open this and read straight from his comments. Changing the size and shape of the fonts is easy and it is also easy to go from one section to the next. I also like the scripture polyps making it easy to see and then get back to the text.
Very good app. Only issue is, with the latest update, our use voiceover and I cannot switch between different portions of the commentary. There is some kind of button that it says unselected that I cannot select. Are used to be able to switch from different portions of the commentary but I cannot access them now.
In the present times we are living in, I believe that is so crucial that God’s children grow closer to him, and his provisions thru the resources he has given us. This ministry is for sure one of those resources to read and feed God’s word, and study material. I thank God for this welcome app. Praying God’s continued Favor for each of you involved in this needed and welcomed resource to keep us connected to the Blessed Trinity in Jesus Mighty Name.
This commentary is most helpful especially when I want a deeper explanation on a particular passage. The information here enlightened the eyes of my understanding. One thing I wish was available, and that is a place to log notes that leave some kind of icon on the page I’m reading on so it will be easy to just tap the icon and find the notes.
There’s a problem with the robotic voice it skips in the beginning of chapters and repeats itself and then begins to function normally,A real person’s voice male or female would be a better option than a robot at least I’m able to speed up or slow down the speaking of the voice which is a good thing!
Having the Word online is so helpful to me. If I am suffering with depression which grips me from my past life, I can easily pick up my iPhone and press the Word icon. There are times when I need instant help and having the convenience of the Word at my fingertips day or night helps me as the Word is powerful and healing.
I have enjoyed this app immensely and I would have given it 5 stars , however, the scrolling adds are very distracting and to be frank, annoying... I have experienced being completely immersed in the commentary only to have a slot machine bar begin scrolling on the page... the button is deactivated that would allow me to turn the adds OFF... If not for this, this app is absolutely perfect!!!
Excellent Bible App! I daresay it’s the best electronic Bible in cyber space. The various versions, the offline capabilities and the myriad of Reading Plans (addressing EVERY situation; from 3-365 days), are phenomenal! The augmentation of the “Verse of the day” - having various Pastors and Bible Teachers deposit spiritual nuggets into the soul and minds of the listeners - is exceptional! I love the "Mind Of Christ". To read the Bible is to eat the bread of life. I have always been a serious student of Gods word learning it at church where the pastor teaches from the original languages. This bible gives me that same type of guidance from home or on the go. One can really gain an extra sharpening of the sword by relaxing and worshipping God through the study of his word from this very special bible.
This commentary is amazing. I am studying from it everyday and am learning a lot. The frustrating part is that this app is filled with typos everywhere. Punctuation is missing and words are misspelled or just plain wrong words. It is already a pretty advanced reading level compared to what you find normally today, but it is much harder to read when you have to figure out what is supposed to be there. That's my only complaint. Way too many typos.
I just wish that you had more information on the people that are doing the commentaries a little bit of their background. It’s great for research. But it is a very helpful app and I love reading with a lot of the old guys who are not polluted by all of the technology that we have today.
I love reading my bible with a commentary. This is a great option as I can easily take it with me instead of my bible AND my large commentary. Also, the option to switch back and forth between the Bible and the commentary is a great feature. The only thing I would change is to have an option to switch between Bible versions.
This app is a great free resource if you are looking to dig deeper in the word. I love how it explains every chapter in a way i can understand. The only reason i am rating it 3 stars is because the Spanish version while it is well translated i have encountered a couple of bad translations and A LOT of words that are not spaced out correctly and it makes it hard and frustrating to read at times. Overall, good app.
I am a baby Christian and just like physical babies who come into the world the number one thing is sucking milk from mom or a bottle. Well, that’s me as it relates to Spiritual birth, I don’t understand that I read in Scripture and I don’t have a local church so I visit this commentary to provide Spiritual clarity and I have been assisted with out fail.
I own a copy of Matthew Henry’s Commentary, but this online version is much easier to use and understand. The only thing that I think would make it even better, would be if it could read the pages aloud. I know there are other apps for that. Excellent resource !!!
Everything about this app is great, you can switch between Bible and Commentary instantly and you can customize the font, text size and line spacing as well. The notes section is pretty handy as well. The only thing this app needs to be perfect is a night mode or dark theme.
I have been using this app for about 2 months. I had some questions after reading Scripture and went into the commentary to answer those questions. I highlighted and noted the verse references from the commentary and was amazed at how much more I learned from the commentary! This commentary with the Bible connected to it, is a must have for reading and studying the Word of G-D!!
I always enjoy this commentary. His focus is always living a holy life and having a closer walk with Jesus. My only issue with this app is there are many errors. Spelling errors and errors in the links to the chapters and verses. Needs a good proofreader and then do an update. I hope they will heed the advice.
I enjoy reading Matthew Henry’s thoughts and am grateful to have his words in the palm of my hand anywhere anytime through this app. It’s not a waste of time to flip to the passages I want to read, but I do wish I didn’t have to go all the way back to the Table of Contents to start a new path each time I want to follow up on something once I’ve already started reading

The Bible is God’s inerrant and final Word to man. Matthew Henry does a superb job of helping said man to understand that inerrant and final Word. All that is required is that the reader pray earnestly for the Holy Spirit to guide him through the subject of his reading to get the most from the commentary. As with God’s Word, Matthew Henry has NOT led me astray. Matthew Henry’s commentaries are indeed Spirit-led. Dennis Lary
One of the things I appreciate about this commentary is that it is OLD! New studies are watered down and influenced by the values of today’s world. I want a study that makes me think Deeper, and to see things from a different perspective. This commentary does that.

I love the Bible verse references in blue that takes me to the verses in other books of the Bible that expands the one I’m reading. This app is a great resource.
Not only quick but is my preferred version. Easy to search with minimal clues. Love having Greek and Hebrew nearby. It’s the one I use in church and when the Pastor states He’s giving us time to find our places he isn’t talking to me!
I love this resource for studying the Bible. I get a real sense of what the scripture is meaning and if I get stuck, I can look words up without having to close the application. It has been a real help in getting a better understanding of the Gospel.
This commentary is a constant blessing to me in searching out to understand God’s Word and what He is saying to me. Matthew Henry has so much of his personal relationship with God that brings to life his life time of studying to know God through His written Word. I love it!
It is wonderful that this commentary is available on suitable cellular phone. There are moments when I may not have the MHC with me because it is a hard copy. It is good to have that added resource when reading and studying the Word of GOD.
This commentary provides great biblical insight. My small critique would be I wish they would break down individual verses and provide commentary more often. I realize this might not always be possible because of context, however I do believe there are more occasions when this would be appropriate.
The Matthew Henry commentary is a tool every student of scripture should have in their arsenal. The app makes it accessible for almost everyone. I do frequently find that there are small errors in the structure of the text such as one might find when converting scanned PDF text with OCR. Otherwise, it’s fabulous.
Matthew Henry Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible Originally written in 1706, Matthew Henry's six volume Complete Commentary provides an exhaustive look at every verse in the Bible. Matthew Henry's well-known six-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments (1708–1710) or Complete Commentary, provides an exhaustive verse by verse study of the Bible. covering the whole of the Old Testament, and the Gospels and Acts in the New Testament. After the author's death, the work was finished (Romans through Revelation) by thirteen other nonconformist ministers, partly based upon notes taken by Henry's hearers, and edited by George Burder and John Hughes in 1811. Henry's commentaries are primarily exegetical, dealing with the scripture text as presented, with his prime intention being explanation, for practical and devotional purposes. While not being a work of textual research, for which Henry recommended Matthew Poole's Synopsis Criticorum, Henry's Exposition gives the result of a critical account of the original as of his time, with practical application. It was considered sensible and stylish, a commentary for devotional purposes. Famous evangelical Protestant preachers such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon used and heartily commended the work, with Whitefield reading it through four times - the last time on his knees.
