The hate on the app is exaggerated
The app is simple. It tells you directions. If you have a favorite bus or a bus or subway you use often you could favorite it. basically simple. I don’t know where by everyone saying the app is complicated or too many buttons or too many tapping. use this app if you are trying to figure out where you want to go in New York City what buses or trains or rails call it a day. but the only thing I would suggest for the developers is the MTA to allow us to purchase tickets prepaid for our route. this is a positive step to making our life as travelers without a car easier

If it ain’t broke…
Why would you completely change the app? I used to be able to open the app, click on the subway line I needed, scroll down and see when the train was coming. Now there are so many added steps. I have to keep switching to my favorites tab instead of my favorite lines just being there when I open the app, click past a service change alert page and change the direction I need to see EVERYtime. Then I have to push the stop times up to fill the screen because for some reason they added a huge unnecessary map on the subway page. Also the train times are gone. It used to say the scheduled time a train was coming as well as how many minutes away it was. Now it just says how many minutes. We have limited time when trying to catch a train. I just need to open it, make 1 or 2 clicks and see when the train is coming. I used to be able to do that. This new app takes too much to navigate. The whole user interface is just unnecessarily clunky and not user friendly. Simple is always better. I never used the bus part of the app for this same reason and always chose to use the web browser. Now you’ve ruined the subway part. The only positive is that it now supports dark mode. I wish I’d never updated. Please change it back.

Looks nice, but old app was much easier and more reliable/accurate
The layout of this new app is far busier and requires more taps to get the same information as the old app/web platform. For a tourist not in a hurry, that information can be useful, but for a native NYer who needs to get someplace now, fumbling through an app to find the same information can mean missing a train, bus, or transfer. However, the worst part is that estimated arrival times are more often than not, completely wrong. Trains and buses in the app that don’t exist, arrival times being 3-5 minutes off, and travel times between stops completely incorrect (too long or too short). Cross checking with the train arrival signs in stations or at bus stops and checking the web app show me that this app is the issue and somehow is working off different algorithms or data sets to estimate timing. The web app has become quite good and overwhelmingly is the most reliable for arrival times. I’ve resorted to using the web app, because while not perfect, it’s by comparison 5 stars over this. I look forward to some fast updates to fix, at the very least, the missing and incorrect arrival times.

Yikes…
Last app version was 2 out of 5 stars, this is worse. Love the colors, the sleek look, the longer arrivals/departures lists, and that’s about it. It has the layout and feel of trying to replace Google maps, and honey…why? This is an MTA app, not a tourist brochure map. The direction planing is ridiculous, the maps only show a single selected subway line (not to mention it mixes buses and subways on one map), the default ordering of subways stops is downtown at the top and uptown on the bottom (what!??), instead of a nice small grid of subway lines it’s a long list and no longer brings subway lines that have service updates to the top of the section, several times a train that wasn’t on the arrival list arrived out of nowhere, if there’s no network connection a red box will persist across screens blocking buttons on the bottom, I should be able to see subway stops and transfers without a network connection using the latest cached service updates, there are no customization settings for what or how information is displayed….I could go on. What feedback did they use to make this app because of this is the result….yikes….

Too complicated, I literally just want to see times
I usually don’t mind a few tweaks here or there when it come to updates but this was a little much that no one asked for. Like most, I just want to see what time a train is coming. You have to click like 5-7 buttons to figure that out. The old way was straight forward—pick your line and stop and you’ll see the how many minutes AND the estimated time. Personally, I don’t care about the explore button that literally never updates to your location even when you have stable wifi. The status should just have the lines in order, and I missed how when you clicked your line, the service status only took up half the screen with the line in order so you can just find your stop from there. Also, when you finally get to the line you want, I feel like the directions should be swapped . Example, why is the “inwood 207” button start at far rockaway? I understand that’s the direction you’re headed to but it’s a little confusing at first glance in my opinion and I almost have to click the back button each time.

App ruined.
What used to be a relatively efficient way to check the subway arrival times has now been ruined. I will be in the station standing on a platform, and when I open the app and “nearby stops” auto opens, I have to scroll through multiple bus stops that I don’t care about to find the subway station I am trying to find times for. Busses and trains should be separate, or at least, there should be a way to default filter for one or the other. Additionally, large train hubs have separate dots on the map for the lines at the same station. This makes it incredibly frustrating to find the train line you opened the app to look for when you may already literally be standing on the platform for the train. For example, the Times Sq station has dots for each line that runs through it, and it is unintuitive where to scroll on the map to find the line you are searching for, i.e. you may have found the dot for the 123 but want the dot for the NQRW. Overall, it takes far too many clicks to find the information that should be readily available.

Inaccurate and difficult to navigate
I agree with asnow1190. I know that developing an app takes a lot of work, but the old app was much easier to navigate, clearly laid out, and the arrival times were much more accurate- I’ve missed trains because of this new app. It is extremely difficult to find what should be standard information: for example, searches don’t always yield results (this could be due to needing the station written in a specific way instead of common names) and separate transit systems are visually lumped together at hub stations. While the new app looks nice aesthetically, it’s visually crowded and it’s difficult to parse out any detail. This feedback is not about getting used to a new app. As much as I use it, I should be a pro at it by now- the fact that I’m not speaks to the lack of user-friendliness. Perhaps the app developers can take a look at the old app and integrate what worked into this app.

Why the changes?
I’m not usually one to complain about new changes and I can adapt pretty quickly. But I updated my app this morning to this new layout and I’m really struggling to understand the changes that were made. I use the app primarily for the buses, and I used to be able to very quickly see what stops any buses were at, which was so helpful! Clicking into a single stop gives you a time estimate which, let’s be honest, is almost always wrong, so it was better for me to be able to estimate it myself. Choosing the direction I want to see now takes more clicks and is less obvious. I used to be able to see bus/subway delays/info in the same screen as the stop information. Now I have to remember to check an entirely separate screen. The old was a bit clunky and definitely needed updates but these updates are not intuitive or user-friendly. I can’t imagine someone less tech-savvy than me trying to use it.

App wasn’t great before but it was quick & functional AKA useful
Before, I could just open the app and in about 2 taps have exactly the info I need for daily commuting while only encountering 1 additional screen. The new app, I have to navigate several screens, multiple taps per screen to get the information I need. When you’re on the go (as most NYers are) this is incredibly annoying and makes the app unusable. I used to defer to this app over Google maps for accurate train/bus info. Now it is unusable for a NYer, who already knows the MTA system, and just needs the most relevant commuting info (when is my train/bus arriving). New app is a 4 star if you’re a tourist or someone from outside NYC boroughs trying to navigate and need an abundance of info. Happy for “them” but not great that NYers experience/needs have been deprioritized since it’s our taxes funding this system.

Made an already annoying app worse
My app updated automatically, unfortunately. Come to find out, the most helpful feature had been taken away. The feature that lets you see what stop the bus is at or how many stops away it is. Now we are only left to trust the “minutes” the bus will arrive in, which I find is wrong 90% of the time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed the bus being 2 minutes away from the actual bus stop because I trusted the app when it said the next bus was 8 minutes away. OR how I’ve rushed and hustled for the bus that the app swore was 3 minutes away, only to discover that the bus wasn’t coming AT ALL. Come on MTA. You say you want to increase ridership, however you seem to constantly be making choices that are driving your customers away. Why would you take away this helpful feature and replace it with nothing?

The app went from usable and efficient to unusable and inefficient bring back the old one
I really miss the old app. When I had 20-35 seconds to make decisions before, I could open the app, and with 2 taps or less I could get exactly the information I was looking for. Now, I have to scroll and tap and navigate and try to find things and it is labor intensive. I have gone back to using Google Maps instead because it is much cleaner and easier to use. The old app was a 3 to 4 star AP that was useful. This new app takes way too long to get the information no need in the go and if k could give it 0 stars I would. The product/UI/developer team has made a cataclysmic mistake with the new app. If you don’t believe me, check the ratings since the update. Read the reviews. I have no doubt whatsoever that if you just rolled back to the old version, people would be much happier.

Huge improvement!
I was part of the beta test for this app and I’m really impressed with what they’ve made. In my opinion, this app is superior to using Google or Apple Maps to navigate public transit in NYC. It rivals other transit apps like Citymapper, which has more features but I still prefer to use the MTA app because it doesn’t have ads and the interface is cleaner. I love the dark mode, I love the way it shows the subway and bus times in a simple and clear way. Only issue I ever really run into is when I try to search a location by name, it doesn’t always give me the result I want. But everything else, it works great. I love it. Good job.

I don’t know why they replaced the old app!
I have never reviewed an App before - until now, because it’s bad! I have family members who agree as well. I am an everyday commuter from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I know what trains I’m taking and don’t get lost. I just need to know at what time the trains or buses will show up. The old app worked perfectly fine. This new app works but it has too many things going on that you have keep on clicking on different links in order to get to the answer. I also saved my favorite train lines, and it always glitches and never loads them at first; only works after I close the app and reopen. Takes longer time to load, I think because it has so much going on, so when you’re a native NYer who commutes everyday, it can mean that you can miss your train. The most annoying part is when you click on a certain train direction but in the next screen it shows you both directions again and you have to click again on your direction. Like why click again and again if you already chose it at beginning. And sometimes you don’t remember the last stop name of the line because many of us never ever go there, so it gets confusing. I just think in terms of uptown and downtown.

With update 3.6, app is great !
Now that real time bus locations are back, the apps functionality is back to being what commuters need. I don’t agree with every visual change, but as always there is no way you could ever get everyone using an app like this with millions of customers on the same page. I think some of the changes are for the better, I would personally prefer the old split for specific stops, where the top of the app was one direction and the bottom was the other, but I think that’s something that maybe confused people. I think overall the app is in a great place now.

Love the new app
I’m really loving the new MTA app, it’s way better than the old one with all these bad reviews. I do wish they would fix one huge issue where they don’t follow iOS conventions. If you navigate deeply within a view (such as clicking a bus stop or train station, select a bus, etc), you should be able to go back by tapping the tab button (in this case Explore), which by iOS convention should double as a back button or go to the home of that tab. Right now it does nothing which is broken. Try any tab view on a well designed iOS app and you’ll see what I mean.

Waste time, bus time is never accurate
Been using both the old and the new apps, was having a hard time when it first updated but everything was all good since I already got used to it. The most horrible is this freaking bus time is never accurate! The bus comes late or earlier than the estimate that I do understand, NYC’s traffic is unpredictable. But what makes me angry is that it gives fake schedule time. Some buses estimate that none of the buses showed up, or the bus arrived but did not even show on the app. Making me stand at the bus stop and waiting for plenty of times! Such a waste of time app. This app should be convenient for passengers to check out accurate schedule timing for their commute. What is the purpose of creating an app that is not helping at all instead of wasting people's time? Garbage.

Throwback New York Experience
I deleted this app and have opted for a good old fashion New York City experience! Now I just show up to the platform whenever and stand and wait and pray and sweat and crane my neck to look down into the darkness of the tunnel (behind the yellow line of course)! Will the train come? Maybe, maybe not! What an exciting and real time rush! Maybe I’ll make it to that job interview but will I be able to make the three transfers? Are those trains even running? Who knows? Exciting! Yellow tape and hand posters are my new best friends again! They got rid of the station agents and those eta screens rarely works so its the wild days down under ground! I like to pretend Im back in the 80s or byo strap and go even farther back in time, either way I get by with my street smarts and grit, patience and a TON of underground cursing! Thanks for the inspiration MTA!

This app has potential.
MTA, you could have done a live status map with all trains and regional buses showing all warnings and service changes on the map with the trains like apple or google maps, but you went lazy and showed ALL POSSIBLE routes on a line and only 1 line at a time. This is a miserable excuse for an app and i’m rating it 5 stars so people can see this horrible mess, althought it is better than the previous app, it still needs heavy development.

The new update ruined my ride experience
Before this new update, it was so convenient and easy. Even for elders my parents can easily navigate through the app and find information they need. After the update, I am not even sure how I can clearly navigate through the app, it used to take me 2 seconds to find now it takes me 2 minutes to find what I need. The new features are helpful but I strongly believe the app currently being overloaded with A LOT of information. And some new information aren’t necessarily helpful. The feature on the app are messy and confusing. I don’t think the developer did a good job on developing a user friendly app-remember this is for everyone, not just the young demo. So please bring back a simple version to help not tech savvy people!

Offline Maps and much better layout
MTA got this right. The offline maps are greatly appreciated; i was having to make searches on the web/use bookmarks for them. And the new layout allows you to see all options at your current location at a glance. Favorites are still there, though oddly located under the “i” icon, and through that you can use “show route” to see the lineup of stops as before. Trip Planner, given a street address, can suggest alternate routes you might not have thought of. Thanks, MTA!

So confusing
Way too many selection screens to get to the train/bus needed. By the time you do you’ve missed the oncoming train/bus. The app no longer finds your stop automatically through location which adds extra time to the search. It auto selects to the uptown direction which can be confusing. The countdown time and the time stamp often don’t match up which can be frustrating. Essentially it’s just become too complicated for people living in a city that moves so fast. I appreciated that previously it would only take a few seconds to find a route... something I could do while multitasking. I feel like now I’m planning a road trip with multiple stops and I need to sit down and really pay attention to make sure I don’t get lost.

Latest update ruined this app
I don’t know what the MTA was thinking with this latest app update, but it ruined basically every function an NYC commuter needs from it. I used to be able to determine which station I should transfer at in order to have the fastest commute. I used to be able to easily see if there was an issue at my local station. I used to be able to use any feature without turning on location services. Not anymore. This app now functions like it was designed for someone who is completely lost in NYC, unable to determine which corner they’re standing on. Now us locals are back to not being able to simply access a reliable timetable from home, office, or anywhere other than a station.

Bloated, not for real commuters update
This update is not for real NYC commuters. The older version was quick and easy to use to get the subway info I needed. This version requires me to take more steps to get to the subway info I need, and the train times for both directions are all jumbled together, requiring me to search to find the direction for the arrival time I need. The map, which is supposedly the main focus of the update, just crowds the page and is another thing to step over. I was an every-morning user of the app for the past 3 years, but just deleted it because I couldn't get the previous version back. Replaced it with the Subway Time app, which works a lot like the previous version which was fast, efficient and un-bloated.

Phenomenal Rework
TLDR: Good redesign, very user friendly, not meant to replace google maps, but good add-on app for commuters to have more information. The app does its job very well and you can tell the developers and designers worked extremely hard to make sure all feature are included in a seamless and user-friendly way. The only suggestion I have is perhaps prioritizing subway lines and commuter rails on the map instead of listing all the lines, buses, and rail randomly. For example, hovering above 59th St Columbus Circle, if I didn’t search it up, I would have to scroll a long time to find the A, B, C, D trains because there are so many buses. Perhaps list the services by popularity? Also what would be cool is to see real time trains moving up and down the line like in other transit apps as well as the official website. Other than that, great app!! Highly recommend.

Was so much better before!
Honestly this app is SO frustrating! The older version was so much more streamlined and easier to understand. I rarely take the subway and only used this app for busses. Before it would automatically show what bus lines were nearby. Not anymore. In addition, it used to know where I was and could clearly state how far away a bus was. Not sure if I’m using it correctly, but it doesn’t do that anymore either. This app is impossible to navigate and I end up leaning on Google maps for a better indicator of where my bus is. Not everyone uses the subways. Please improve the bus info in this app, or go back to the previous version. As it is now, it’s completely useless for me.

Comprehensively Worse than the old app
I don’t even know where to begin with the problems with this app, but here’s the single most frustrating thing; it’s almost impossible to just track the buses live on their routes. It’s pretty much the only thing I really need the app to do, and I think it still does it, but not easily or obviously. MTA schedules are barely a suggestion anyway, but it’s fine, as long as their are buses and trains moving along routes fairly regularly. Bur you need to see them to plan on them. And you could do that very easily on the old app. No longer, sadly. Now they insist on presenting the ‘scheduled’ times, and it’s impossible to work out how to see a live status of a moving bus. And the scheduled times are frequently wrong, so now I’m missing buses and running late because I can’t plan anything properly. This is an absolute garbage app, and a total waste of MTA money. Bring back the old one so that I have a chance of at least getting to where I need to be close to when I need to be there.

The update is garbage
Even before this app had problems. Irregularly reporting bus times and location , train delays not being reported accurately etc. but the great thing was they mostly cleaned up the issues. Now for god knows what reason they decided to “update” the app with colors and a more complicated interface. Before all I had to do was search my bus and then I could see where the bus was on the route. Now I can’t even search for my bus without being given 16 other pieces of information. Bring back the old interface it was simpler to navigate and made sense. If this stays like this I’m just gonna rely on google or a third party app, this app is garbage now.

Terrible Update
The recent overhaul of the app has a fancier looking interface but greatly reduced user experience. It now takes multiple taps and a savvy user to access basic info that was previously available much more easily. For example, once you select the subway line and station, you now have to specify uptown or downtown in order to see the next arriving trains instead of that info simply being displayed on the next screen like it did in the previous version. And that’s if you can even figure that out because the words uptown and downtown are barely visible. Another annoying “upgrade” is the next arriving trains no longer show the time of arrival, instead they show number of minutes so you have to look at the time on your phone and calculate when the train will arrive. Overall feels like an expensive redesign with a more complicated and less functional user experience.

As dismal as their service
I hoped for better, but this app is unfortunately on par with everything else from the MTA. It takes to much effort to get to something simple, and it comes up short. Couple that with the need to register for basic features, and you have at best a marginal app that’s as much a necessary evil as the subways are. It’s ridiculous to believe this is the second or maybe third iteration of this app. Has the MTA not looked at the features of other apps when they designed this? Or is this app intentionally poorly designed to drive us to apps that do their job better, but come with a monthly subscription?

Can’t buy tickets w this app use MTA train time instead
I opened the older app this morning and attempted to buy a ticket for the LIRR but the buy button wasn’t working, so I checked for an update and this is the app that replaced it. Does everything EXCEPT provide a way to buy tickets. You have to use the other app, “MTA train time” to buy tickets. How about making an “all in 1” app? BTW, “LIRR train time” no longer works.

Live tracker is back but…
The live tracker is back but the old tracker before the update was easier to use. The new live tracker seems slower to update, the bus is always between two stops it doesn’t tell you if the bus is at the bus stops The old tracker will tell you when a bus is less then one stop away, approaching, and then at stop. The new tracker can only position itself between two different stops so it’s never tell you that it’s at stops, the icon just jump from being between the pervious stops about to reach your stops and then it’ll jump to between the next stops. We seems to have lost the more precise tracking. the next one is minor but prefer if the bus icon was a different color from the line it’s currently traveling down I’ll probably keep using the bus status website rather then the app

Horrible update, I can’t read it
I really hate what they did to this app. I can’t even tell what direction a bus is coming from it’s very confusing. Before you would see the line with the bus on route but now it says the stops it’s at but it doesn’t say what bus it is or the destination of the bus like it used to before. Like if I wanted to go to East 180 I obviously wouldn’t look at the map of the bus going towards riverdale or even look at that map. It would show the stop and where the bus was at on the stop. Clear and easy to use. Now it’s a bunch of jumbled info and I deleted the app and reply more on Google maps

Like the title says, don’t bothering using this app because I had to close apps, restart my phone, re-install the app just to have nothing show up. Had to double check my service was working to make sure it wasn’t my phone when it was still the app. You’re far better using the Transit app because the moment I opened the app, the train times appeared in a flash while this app still struggled to pull up anything. Loving the updates. However would love for the favorites to be rearranged automatically based on GPS location. The app I used before did that very well.

No longer quick
This app was pretty good in that I could put in my bus or train number and see when the next one is. Now I have no idea how to do that. Instead of quick little check, now I have to plug in my destination (why?!) and it still works worse. So you spend more time in the app for a less obvious and more annoying experience. I have never written a review and this update has forced me to write my first one
As the title says: I have never written a review and this update is so terrible I am forced to write one because I don’t know where or how else to channel my rage. This update is beyond incomprehensible. I just want to see where the bus is - why can I no longer see where the bus is? I stared at the map over and over again to see if I was missing something. I stared at the list of stops believing that the bus was just not ever, ever coming. Why did you get rid of the only useful feature the old version had? I can’t imagine living in this city without it. Please. I beg you. Bring back the bus tracker. Show me where I am on a simple list and where the bus is on the list and how many people are on the bus. Are you all not bus riders? Is that it? Do you all just ride the subway? Or have cars? This is such an enormous error to the ridership. I literally can’t handle this.

When this App was initially updated , March 27, 2024. I gave it a 1 Star Review without giving it an opportunity to actually impress me with its changes. Redundant
The old version was far more user friendly. This version requires you to tap the direction you’re going twice in order to see filtered info. Too much information is presented on one page making quick checks nearly improbable. The wait times are inaccurate and the delay or service change notices take far too long to populate. Also, it must take more processing power because it does take longer to load and I have a new phone so that’s not the issue. To be useful, this app needs to be quick and simple. It’s a very frustrating app to use now.

Terrible and Unusable Update
This app used to be simple and easy and helpful and informative. And then they did a massive overhaul of the entire interface and removed most of the features I used to use. Now train and bus times are completely inaccurate, or wrong, or nonexistent. Very sloppy to navigate. It’s a completely different app now. These weren’t minor changes, they threw everything out and started from scratch and created an absolute piece of garbage. The MTA fails…yet again. Daily. Hourly. An immensely sprawling and intricate system with absolutely appalling management and ownership.

Ruined a useful app
As a New Yorker and as an employee of NYCT, I use the mta app several times a day. I notice that the updated app has added directions for outside of NY which is fine but navigation for locations in has been severely sacrificed. No longer can you type the name of a business and see the options for Brooklyn and Manhattan pop up. The present updated app simply doesn’t give the location. It doesn’t work and will force you to use another app like google maps. Overall, terrible update to a once very useful app.

Good update of the app.
I don't usually write a positive review, but not in this case. I ran a new update of the program a couple of times, but I already like everything. The application was made more intuitive, the confusing interface was removed. Special thanks for the offline cards.

Make it easy
This app was not very good before but now it is not good at all. You can miss the bus while searching for your bus on this app. At least I can't use this app. Look at other apps and fix the flaws in them and the app will automatically become perfect. Fewer clicks better app

Bring back the old app
It’s so much harder to check the upcoming trains and train times at a station and compare routes now. Navigation to see the upcoming trains at a station takes so much longer now, which is very inconvenient when I’m trying to decide if I should stay on the local train or transfer if there’s an express train arriving soon. I can see the benefit of this app but wish the old one was maintained to easily and quickly get the information needed without a bunch of other info that slows down navigation.

Terrible awful app
This app is terrible. Worst app ever. It tells you times of trains that don’t exist. It told me in real time that Theo different e trains came and departed to the Jamaica van wyck stop while I was waiting on platform. No trains came and none left. Waited 30 freakin minutes for a train making me late for my dr’s appt when I could have just driven or taken a car service if I had know trains were running every 30 minutes instead of every couple of minutes like the app promised. If i could give negative stars I would!

Go back to the basics!
Please go back to the original app. I don’t care to see metro north or LIRR on the same app that shows when the next subway will show up. I’m a 28 tech geek and this app is WAY too confusing and overloading for me. Go back to the way it was before you could click on a specific train and it easily showed you the train updates and stops, not this multiple click nonsense!! This is NOT a train, this is a commuter rail that comes every 3 min during rush hour to almost every station in the 5 boroughs.

New Update is really awful
This update is really awful in terms of UX; what used to be clear and concise information available through a couple of clicks now is a complicated series of clicking through multiple screens. The map centric focus is not helpful as a default and is radically reducing load times, particularly when using low-bandwidth internet that is available in subway stations. Narrowing the view also makes it more difficult to survey available service options.

Keep it the way it was
I can’t stand this new version. The previous version was so easy to navigate. This new app I can appreciate the upgrade but this was a totally, completely, and new make-over and not easy to navigate. I saw a senior at the bus stop yelling at their phone wondering what happened to their app. I explained that the app went through a change. That poor senior eventually asked the bus driver about the app and the driver couldn’t help much and directed them to call 511. Put the old app back!
