I never write reviews, but I feel compelled to write this review because of how excellent this app is. So many apps of this type can be flaky or buggy or interminably slow… But that’s not true of this app! I’ve used for over two years and I am still amazed how fast it is in connecting to my device (instantaneous) It never fails… Never… I know who did the coding on this app, but they should get paid a lot of money because they wrote an excellent easy use app that just works!
Temp control and scheduling is really good app interface allows easy adjustment and copying features in the scheduling is perfect. With 4 time points to adjust temp in the schedule, fits very well for our family. Those features I would give 4.5 stars. The clean air features are another story. Not all features are a silo me in the app, like comfort mode with fresh air. The bigger issue is the a availability of the settings for clean air is inconsistent. For no rhyme or reason, the options are available in the app. I state it this way, because most of the time you cannot see any options to setup the clean site functionality in the app. The menu is blank. From time to time you see the options, but no all features are always there when you see any options. This needs to be fixed, it’s very annoying and reduces the benefit of having this linked system. 1 Star.
I just recently purchased a new build home and they supplied us with this “WIFI Thermostat”. The thermostat almost never works. It says connected to the internet, then you can never access it through this worthless app. I’ve read a lot of reviews and it seems I’m not alone. Looks like the company doesn’t do anything about it either. Shouldn’t be called a wireless thermostat if you can’t access it wirelessly. Login fails 99 times out of 100, then randomly the thermostats loses signal. The weather option never worked from the start. This thermostat was a nice selling point of the home since it’s a 2-story, we wouldn’t have to run downstairs anything we wanted to adjust it. I know you probably either just bought it, or got a new house with it, but in short, cut your loss rip it out and put in a Nest or something similar, at least they don’t sell garbage and you can count on the other brands to just work all of the time.
This app only allows users to create 4 temperature schedule adjustments per day. If users could have perhaps 10-12 schedule adjustments per day then users could better balance comfort and peak hour rates from our utilities. Other similar thermostat apps like Nest and Ecobee offer infinite adjustments throughout the day and excellent scheduling capabilities including away from home options and geofencing. More adjustments throughout the day would allow users to reduce their utility bills and ultimately reduce power consumption and could help curb power demands, climate change, rolling blackouts, etc. I hope this review is read by the developers of this app and the management of Aprilaire. Aprilaire makes great products and the app should be just as good as the hardware installed in our homes.
The Aprilaire customer service is still worthless. They do nothing to help. This app is better, but you can’t clear alerts from a month ago! Dehumidifier settings default to 40% all of the time so be careful when turning on. Alexa Aprilaire Plus skill still doesn’t work. Would be nice to have integrations into Ring and IFTTT. Allow ability to turn on smart switch(es) (hooked to bathroom fan) when humidity gets high. Turn on smart switch(es) when ventilation comes on (smart switch hooked to bathroom fan). This would allow better air exchange during ventilation and not cause pressure difference in home Update - 3-7-22 -downloaded new App update. Don’t let them for you! Alexa skills do not function properly. Specifically, the Aprilaire Plus skill does not work.
This is an embarrassment to home automation. Clearly a hamfisted attempt to build an app so that they can sell more air conditioning units. The app rarely works and is extremely slow. By the time it loads, I nights as well walk downstairs and change the thermostat myself. I get a connection error 75% of the time. I usually have to logout and log back in to make it work. When it does work, I need to make the temperature adjustments twice for them to take effect. It defeats the purpose of having an automatic system. You are better off having the old school Honeywell systems, at least it will work as intended. I have used this system of 8 months and I have come to loath the name Aprilaire. I will be switching to a nest or competitor system once I have the money for it. Avoid Aprilaire at all costs.
Love the scheduling options, perfect for a basic user like me. The app itself is pretty basic which I think is a good thing, it doesn’t give too much for anyone who doesn’t want to get fancy with their temp control. However, I’m sharing the thermostat for one home with upstairs neighbors and only have access through this app (they have the actual thermostat upstairs) and this app is CONSTANTLY going offline. Quite frequently have to restart the app 3-4 times even normally to connect, and their servers must be running off an iMac 2006 because they’re constantly having trouble and outages. Update your stuff to something from 2019 or later and I’ll change my rating.
Overall the app has a good user interface and has been reliable. There are features missing that would make superior and comparable to other Thermostats and apps. Integration with whole home aprilaire dehumidifier is very nice. However these are the items missing. - No iPad support - No iWatch Support - No iOS Screen Widget Support - Cannot set Away mode lower than 80ºF - Cannot set all thermostats to same temp or mode - No SmartThings support - No IFTTT Support - No Home Support - No Runtime Statistics Aprilaire zone controller with zone sensors are very nice as the zones are a simple thermostat for zones that Have buttons for up/dn of temperature and not other settings to confuse the user. The master zone thermostat is full featured but does not have a Set All temperature. This would be a very useful features so as to not go into each zone to set each temp individually. May change Aprilaire zone control and zone sensors thermostats for a Aprilaire Zone control and use ecobee thermostats in each of 6 zones. Keep up the development.

Update: 07/25 I wish there was a negative rating. This app has the potential to have the most negative rating. 9/10 times doesn’t connect to WiFi. I replaced my thermostat on 2nd floor with a nest but this one is a fancy touch screenone ( on the first floor) provided by the builder. To replace this one with a nest or any other thermostat I need to get a professional because of the wiring and complex devices from Aprilaire in my loft. PATHETIC PATHETIC. See thermostat connected to WiFi but on the app it shows not connected or sometimes just shows syncing but never syncs. Have been seeing this issue since last one week or so. Not sure how to fix it and the app is super slow and feels as is if made by a middle School kid learning programming
Ever since the past few weeks app updates, this app has stopped functioning. It lost all connection to the thermostat after the initial setup when I bought the house, and now no longer able to control it from the app. Every attempt to add the thermostat “device” failed. Although the thermostat was able to connect to the internet, You couldn’t even complete the setup on the app after many attempts. What a disappointment because this app was working before all the updates that was supposedly to make it better. Not sure customer service exists for this app? Looking at switching to Nest or Ecobee soon unless something is done soon to fix this issue.
We have separate HVAC systems for upstairs and downstairs of large home. App has been working fairly well for last 2 years (although the interface is old-fashioned as others have commented). Over the last 2-3 weeks the app has stopped syncing with thermostats often, and stopped connecting woth thermostats totally over the last 2 days. No, it’s not the wifi in the house- that is working well for all our other smart devices. And why would BOTH thermostats stop connecting in the same time frame? Has there been and IOS update without a corresponding app update, resulting in a software problem? Are there server problems at Aprilaire?
I have been using Aprilaire for many years now. The legacy screen has been updated with the new upgrade and the app is very stable on iOS. Tech support is very helpful and Courteous also the wait time for help is generally short and you get to talk to an actual person that knows the products. Find a contractor that supports the product and have them properly install the thermostat and properly connecting it to the equipment is the key.
I had a new heater/AC installed in March 2022 along with an AprilAire WIFI thermostat. I was initially disappointed. Although I could connect the thermostat to WIFI, the app usually showed that the thermostat was not connected. AprilAire’s Customer Service was friendly and responsive; they advised a few times that their servers were down and that they were preparing to push a new version of the app. Once the app was updated (early April I think), everything has worked very well and consistently. The interface is intuitive and well designed.
We spoke with our technician (Kyle) for 45 minutes getting the app working. The reason it took so long is trying to get our phones synced to the thermostat. We finally used our iPad to get it connected. He was patient and very knowledgeable and talked us through the whole process. I can’t say enough good things about Kyle. We love the app-it actually is easier to use than the thermostat itself. Thank you!
App connects and shows current info from the thermostat but won’t let you change anything. Can’t change the temp up or down. Can’t change the humidity setting to a different level. Can’t cancel a hold if one is set. App is useless for remote control of the thermostat. Please fix or go back to the old app that could control the thermostat.
I’ve had it for about a year and it works ok when I use the touch panel. The WiFi has been a disaster. Periodically it will connect but nearly every time I try to connect on my smart phone it does not connect. I’ve gotten a new router and modem as per AA recommendations and it didn’t help. Tech support had no idea what to do other than “wait for some upgrades that are coming”. I like what it can do but they should not have rushed it onto the market until It was ready. P.S. I’m having a hard time posting this because I have to have a nickname and every weird combination I come up with has been taken.
Our thermostat looks good, and we get a lot of compliments, but I can’t recommend it to anyone who wants a smart thermostat. Ours doesn’t connect to the Internet, making the app useless. The thermostat used to work, and it was convenient to view and adjust settings from anywhere. Now, it has been more than a year since we’ve been able to use any wireless function (despite not having this issue with any other device), and the troubleshooting steps don’t work. App support didn’t respond when contacted. Perhaps they’ve abandoned this product? That’s apparently what we will need to do if we want a smart thermostat.
The most recent thermostat update is awful. The GUI is cumbersome controls and programming are now hidden under multiple layers. As just one example, to turn the fan on you now have to make 3 clicks. Very difficult to see entire days programming settings. “Copy To” function is cumbersome and again requires multiple clicks to perform. Please allow us to go back to previous version of the app and get rid of your app designer(s), they are not users of the app in real world. And BTW the Weather and Pollen function is still not fully functional or operating properly. NomPollen info and still shows previous days weather.
The app is pretty much useless as you are not able to change the temperature or mode of your thermostats thru the app. It is constantly syncing, timing out or trying to connect. No wonder people are switching to Nest and ecobee. Please fix this app and/or your servers! Otherwise, please send a notice to owners that they wasted money on your WiFi thermostats and that the remote capability is not working. I really like aprilaire equipment, but equipment controls are a waste of money and time. Whoever makes IT related decisions at your company needs to be replaced with someone competent who knows what they are doing, and someone who is in synch with current trends and times.
My new home came with the Aprilaire Thermostat. I could never get it to sync with my phone. Did all the trouble shooting and still could not get it to work. I finally call the help line and what I learned is that the contractor set it to be on automated mode. Once that was changed everything synced up and everything works great. I should have called the number 3 months ago.
Nice stat but a waste as a under the house unit. I got it for the WiFi link but all it can do is monitor and send alerts via WiFi. I should have done more research and gone with the 8820 for the whole house and added the sensor for the dehumidifier and have control from my living space. WiFi works 50% of the time at best. Barely works with Alexa in my home.
When we moved into our new house about 9 months ago we had no issues with the app or connectivity to thermostat. Since then it times out every time and I have tried resetting the Wi-Fi settings multiple times. Now I cannot add the thermostat back to the app as it says it is registered but then fails to connect. This thermostat also used the have control from our Alexa devices but that was finicky and now does not work at all. This app is garbage! I want to switch out the thermostat for an Ecobee but I have to have a pro come and wire it as everything it wired to a panel in our attic.
Finally this app has been updated to modern app standards and is actually functional! One area of opportunity is the Away Mode settings - why can’t we set the upper temp limit to anything lower than 80? I have pets and am not comfortable with allowing the temperature to get to 80 degrees when we are not home. Only other thing I would love to see is the availability to add the Aprilaire thermostat to HomeKit so I can control my thermostat with Siri.
The whole reason to buy a thermostat like this is so you can control it remotely. I have a Nest at one house. I’ve had it for years. Never had a problem logging on, making changes, etc. Aprilaire? I’ve had it for less than a year. It’s gone down several times for multiple days while they tried to figure out what’s wrong. You also cannot set up a temperature range like Nest. Nope, you have to set it for heating or cooling. Top it all off with being one of the most expensive on the market and you have an over-priced, unreliable thermostat. Do yourself a favor and buy a Nest.
Ever since latest update remote control ability doesn’t work properly. I open app, it waits and says it failed to connect. I have to fully close the app and reopen and it immediately connects and allows me to control system. It’s a work around but needs to be addressed. Latest update version finally fixed remote ability. Connects to system on first try.
UPDATE: The recent App update last weekend did not solve any of the previous issues. I have no idea what they did, but testing before launch was not one of them. I’m not sure I’ve actually written a review on an application previously. This app hasn’t been updated in almost 1 year. It crashes constantly, has non-stop sync issues, and essentially makes me seriously contemplate converting to Nest or Ecobee. Aprilaire sent a few emails months ago informing people they were “aware” of the issues and were working on the concerns. They haven’t corrected a thing.
Previous version had a dashboard layout suitable to view on a phone. Todays dashboard is just a bunch of blocks representing each function of each device. With a dual zone system that is a lot of blocks. Previous functionality also allowed me to set vacation setting to all devices at the same time. That seems to have been eliminated. Overall poor design to get devices to the cloud is a step back.
I have multiple properties that are using various Aprilaire products including Thermostats, Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers. My only complaint is that the WiFi thermostats can only utilize the 2.4 ghz wireless router signal, excluding the faster 5 ghz signal. Their equipment is well made and has made properties much more comfortable and cleaner. Good Job!!!
Anyone that thinks this is a good app for a thermostat is horribly mistaken. Make one degree change, wait a second, make another degree up or down, wait a second, down again, wait….. Then, it just changes itself back. What the????! We have this at our church installed by an HVAC professional, and it’s an expensive junk thermostat. My Sensi is 10 times the thermostat this one is and the app is super intuitive. Unlike this. Heck, I hate the Nest, and it’s at least better than this thing. Would NEVER recommend this company. Completely wastes my time.
Since the upgrades and updated app and UI, developers have been slowly working out issues and bugs. The app is far from perfect, but as long as I can access upstairs and downstairs thermostats and make quick changes I’m OK with the pace. Do the basics well, really well, and the rest will follow. I can open the app and makes changes as easily as I can say “Hey Alexa” or “Hey Google.”
So, I bought a new house that came with Aprilaire. I try to see the positive, and it works pretty good. The big issue is this app. I never know if I will be able to use my phone to change the air. Such a terrible app, besides no improvements and looks terrible! Nothing against the thermostat, but I bought a Nest to change it, I was done with this stupid app. My nest wasn’t compatible with the System so I had to return it.
I originally rated the most recent update 5 stars but after using the app more I noticed that it still has some of the same bugs as the previous versions. Often when you try to change the temperature from the app after you move the degrees up or down it will revert to what was originally set. It normally takes a few try’s before the change is accepted.
Overall, there are nice features for the Aprilaire system, and those work well. Unfortunately, to access these features you have to utilize an app that seems to be frozen in time with an abysmal interface. The app seems to work when it wants to, which is frustrating. Connection and sync errors are common, and login information is periodically purged. Scheduling is a disaster. This feature is poorly implemented and lacks the easy configuration of a system like Nest. Sometimes keeping things simple is a good thing. The app design is very outdated. The interface is “clunky” and buggy. I often have to change the temperature multiple times before the system accepts my input. I hope an update is released this year to fix all the issues and update the interface for a more pleasing, and stable, experience.
The app doesn’t have all the features the base device has which is kind of a let down. Also the app seems to crash frequently which makes it hard to use. I wish it kept track of heat/cooling usage day by day, nest and other thermostats track this information. This app has the potential to be something more than it is, but where it currently stands it’s not very good. Also, ui looks very basic. Could use a freshen up appearance
If I could give this a zero! It’s doesn’t deserve a single point. The thing never connects to Wi-Fi. This is the worst app ever. It worked well before the updates now the app doesn’t connect at all and so now I have to manually change it. I will be purchasing another thermostat. What a waste! The app tells you to connect to settings on the app and when you go there there’s is nothing to change so you can connect the Wi-Fi. If it ain’t broke why add the colorful crap that don’t work. I HATE the stupid app!
You never know if you will be able to connect. Sometimes it works, mostly not. When it does it is simple, and I agree the scheduling app is clunky. you need a new UI/UX designer. When it doesn’t connect, fairly often, rebooting the router and the thermostats often doesn’t work. Very very frustrating as there is no pattern as to why it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. I removed my Nest thermostats because the contractor installing the new units said he wouldn’t warranty them unless we used these. BS
The scheduling function is a bit confusing and not easy to set. Whenever I try to set temps, it changes automatically for some reason. I miss my Nest (has to get this thermostat with my new HVAC system.) The password reset is confusing. I get set a new system generated password, but I can’t find where I can reset my own new password in the app. Extremely frustrating and not very secure.
4 stars just for the fact that the app finally works for the first time since I moved into this house, and no longer looks like an iOS 8 app that was never updated. Realistically probably a 3-star app since it’s missing a lot of integrations you’d expect, but I’m just happy I don’t have to go upstairs to change the temperature anymore.
We have constant problems with it staying connected to our internet. It’s not our internet either, we have tons of other devices hooked up and we don’t have any problems with anything else.
Randomly the app loses WiFi Connection. I’ve reset the WiFi Settings and that didn’t work. The Thermostat shows it’s connected to WiFi but the app shows not connected. It’s not our WiFi either because we have several other devices connected and is working fine per cable company.
An app that has functionality I can use! Being able to control my thermostat from my mobile device is so convenient. I can do everything I could do by standing in front of the thermostat on my mobile device. Great idea
The app is awful. One view for my downstairs therm different view for the upstairs. Cannot toggle between the two in the app. The thermostats are impossible to connect to the Wi-Fi and app so you just have to keep trying and eventually they connect. God for bit you reset the Wi-Fi or change the Wi-Fi password. Don’t even get me started on the thermostat programming. Stick with this system because it came with my home build. Warranty voided if I switch it out for something else. Would NEVER buy.
The app is great… when it works. It constantly kicks me out and I have to re-login. There are times where it won’t sync with the stats. It doesn’t matter where I’m at or what WiFi I’m on, so it’s not an internet issue. Sometimes the programs don’t save. And other times the programs don’t kick on the stats. However, it is better than having to go to the facility to turn on air. I just wish it worked a little more consistently.
I literally can't wait to rip this April air piece of junk out of my home and put in an ecobee or something like I had before. This thing is such crap from the day I moved in over a year ago. Every time I go to the app, it's unreachable and I have to get up to go to the actual thermostat on the wall, but that ALSO is about as dumb as you get for actually interacting with it. It's been a year and I don't even know if I'd sell this, that may be complete cruelty.... The best place is the trash.... They have a long way to go.
Unable to set temperature temporarily until next scheduled time
There are no options for setting the temperature temporarily or permanently similar to the previous app. 1/8/22 If you push the HOLD button on the thermostat, the “Schedule on” button on the App will disappear. That means you no longer can change the schedule from the App.
It has been over two weeks since the thermostat app upgrade failed! Nothing resulted after an hour over the phone with customer service rep. The issue is suppose to be escalated to their engineering people. It seems Aprilaire engineering is not very responsive to customer’s problems.
We had one WiFi thermostat and things worked well. I bought five more (1 for each zone). Adding a thermostat just disconnects the other thermostat from the app even though that isn’t what the instructions say. No smooth way to switch between thermostats. Customer service isn’t available on weekends and it’s a weekend house (hence the WiFi). Hopefully they fix the bugs because it’s a good idea
I’ve done all the steps like a 100 times and thermostats will connect to internet (Wi-Fi) but won’t connect to my device. It always says lost connection. Weird part is WiFi is connected on the thermostats but won’t connect to my phone so I can’t turn anything on or off remotely. It worked before but since I got a new phone it won’t. Tried disconnecting Wi-Fi from air system and reconnecting 100. Times but no luck
I’ve had my thermostat the 8620 for four years now and the app continues to get better you can clearly tell they are not software guys, but it is improving and the reliability is also improving. I would like to see it get to the level of the high-end competition out there such as nest.
I have had this thermostat and application for about 3 years. My advice is to shop a different brand! The software has always been buggy and unreliable. With this version of the software it randomly sets the heat at 90 degrees! What a total disappointment! It also frequently disconnects from my network with the router less than 20 feet from it with no walls between the two. Imagine it setting your temperature to 90 degrees when you are not at home. Garbage!
