When my cousin and I were growing up this was our favorite game and honestly nothing has scratched that itch since, the nostalgia this game brings is exactly what I needed. The game is exactly how I remember it and honestly doesn’t feel aged to me at all. Also I am both shocked and ecstatic that this is on an iPhone now, it’s wild to me but that’s technology. I’ve been searching for a phone game I could love and this is it, it’s such a great game and it has been brought to iOS well, don’t listen to the people’s complaints most are unfounded, the aiming in this game was never great and it’s the same as it was before plus there’s a skill that shows line of fire for arrows and it’s easy to get use to. Also someone complained about the obstacles in the thieves guild being “too hard” or “incompatible to do on a phone game” can’t remember how it was worded but I just finished those said obstacles and did them on my first try, honestly they could have been harder lol but it’s a challenging game you won’t feel like you’re immortal in it which is great. All in all this game is amazing even on iPhone Im so impressed and I hope they bring dark alliance 2 over as well I’d never need another phone game again!
I finally got the “maximum fun” achievement, I didn’t know that it was fully maxing out a character rather than just one stat but that achievement is done! I’m completing the game on extreme and Drizzt right now to see if I can find one of the 3 hidden achievements or Artemis Entreri, Also pretty sure “tough little guy” is broken. And, are the 3 hidden achievements actual achievements or are they just there? I’m dying to find out because I’m trying to complete all the achievements (20/28 so far) ok that’s it for now! Bye.
I was hoping for something like Baldur’s Gate or Icewind Dale but it’s really more like Diablo IIRC. Which I enjoyed as well, but know your audience! BG enthusiasts like the relaxed pace of turn based combat and puzzle solving and lots of control over character stats. This game has a lot of arcade style play. The disappearing islands have now gotten really old and you’re not even allowed to save whenever you want which makes it worse. I don’t own a “game controller” but it looks like one will be required to play this successfully. The iPad controls are too clunky to do these precisely timed jumps. Certain controls don’t even seem to exist without a controller, like moving the camera lower so missle weapons can be used effectively. One’s finger tends to drift off of the attack button in the heat of combat so suddenly you’re swapping weapons or picking up stuff instead of attacking the guy trying to kill you. Enjoying it, but not sure it will last. Going to try one of the other two (!) character choices.
This game has so many great aspects, it’s a decent port of the original. Game is clearly intended to be played with controller as touch screen can be seriously frustrating. Some obvious areas of improvement: interface scrolling, inventory especially are really cumbersome. Seems like a glaring oversight as a few scroll buttons on the gui would solve. As it relates to game control, touch aiming doesn’t work nearly as well as controller and with 2 of 3 chars being ranged, an aim-assist would do wonders. The rest of the issues are really with the original game, save check points, the frustrating thieves guild platform jumping, bosses that can one-hit kill your etc, all of which will tempt the less-than-committed to quit and not return. Aside from all that, it is a really great game, derived from great source content and the the OG RPG brand. I’m satisfied but not elated.
When you hit every 4th level the option to select which attribute to upgrade is easily automatically skipped and defaulted to strength due to some hidden buttons. If you press and hold the inventory button you get the option to select which attribute to increase but you can’t change it from strength to any of the other 5 attributes. And even if you wanted to select strength there are hidden/missing buttons that finalize the selection and move onto the skills selection. I leveled up another character to lvl 4 to see what happened and I’ve been trying to debug this for the last 30 minutes without any success. I figured there’s some hidden button somewhere that I can’t see but I couldn’t locate it. I would appreciate this getting fixed as I will only be willing to play the dwarf since picking strength is the best option for him but the fact that this doesn’t work is kind of a bummer. Please fix and thank you.
This is a great game and very nostalgic. The port is, however, uninspired. It’s good enough to sell the game, but it doesn’t seem like much effort was put into creating an enjoyable experience. That said, I’ve beaten the game on every difficulty (+extreme) and with every character (-Drizz) and then continue to play some casual runs. I think a few issues could easily be fixed to improve sales and ratings for positive ROI and a port you can be proud of. Easily 5 stars w/ a few tweaks. Issues: 1) Character building is broken - all stats forced to go into strength b/c the buttons glitch 2) “Camera angle reset shortcut” adds no value but adds frustration and could easily be locked or require 4 instead of 2 accidental clicks when I fat-thumb a button 3) Zoom distance should be adjustable for my iPhone SE’s tiny screen 4) Gauntlet mode is seemingly impossible and I’ve read PS2 guides from GameFAQs to no avail…not sure how it got tweaked or if it did (had to import a character to beat it) Playing on iPhone SE 2nd gen. w/ touch controls. App and phone are up to date.
I really loved the gameplay, and it’s a really well made port. There’s the right amount of challenge to this game that doesn’t feel too easy or too hard, and it comes with an extreme difficulty as well. However there are a few flaws such as not being able to respec points, damage numbers being displayed incorrectly, and the worst of all, the auto screen rotation. Sometimes it really gets frustrating when the game forces u to look a certain direction while in combat. Aside from this, baldurs gate dark alliance is one of the best rpgs u can play on mobile.
I got this game on demo (PS2 disc) when it came out, got it for PS2, kept my PS3 just so I could play it, have it on XBOX, and now downloaded on XBOX Series X, and yes of course now for iPAD!!! Have an M2 this works very well, only grumble is scrolling is a little painful, wish buttons on right were a little larger, but I can’t really complain to have this gem back. I wish they made more like these there is so much AD&D content just waiting to be created this was just a taste. Thank you!
Ive completed the game on every difficulty and have started on EXTREME DIFFICULTY. (Btw I believe there is a glitch with being able to import characters into the Gauntlet(unless it does that after completing Hard difficulty)) I’m so happy this game came to IOS! They did a wonderful job! I’m to the third chapter in the swamp and everything has been perfect. My brother and I used to put HOURS into this game constantly doing new games to get better gear. Love it!
Great game, final act didn’t feel right though. They just increase the drop rate by a seemingly infinite amount to prepare you for the boss, then you don’t get to sell any of the amazing weapons you found because the games over. I know it’s an old game but it just feels like it started strong then they stopped putting their heart into it and rushed the rest of the game out. No side quests or puzzles after act 1, and the act 1 puzzles were very simple leading you to believe there will be more and they’ll get more difficult.
This is an excellent port! Please DO Dark Alliance 2!
This was an amazing revisit to a game I played a ton as a kid. A challenging/fun dungeon crawler with a great story. I enjoy that the game is more linear with direction and it’s great to kill 30 minutes to an hour with the frequent save spots. It has a simple story, one you would think for a dungeon crawler game. **To Developer - It seems the achievements may not be working. Just beat the game with human archer on my first play through - These achievements did not pop: - Fully stocked quiver (I had 1006 arrows in inventory) - Defeat Karne - Dragon Down - Maximum Fun - Detected Magic - Rock Collector Will update if on 2nd playthrough pops.
On iPad the NPC dialog is not captioned, or at least the captions aren’t working. The other thing that made playing difficult is that the control size option did nothing to change the size of the touch controls, which were tiny and close together. Larger controls and more customizable controls would make playing more enjoyable.
Love the game, brings back memories and it’s an excellent port so far with backbone controller. My only issue is it claims their is cloud save support but when I go from my iPhone to IPad there is no load game files. Kind of a bummer, would give 5 stars if I can resolve this issue. For the record, both devices are fully up to date and synced to the same iCloud account and internet network.
This game is the best, simply put. Owned it when it came out on the OG Xbox. Loved it. Still love it. Now I’m playing it through with my 11yr old son. He’s enjoying it as well. You can Bluetooth 2 controllers to your phone and play couch co-op. Airplay it on a big screen. For $5…this is an absolute no brainier of a purchase.
Game controls are bad and the game is basically nerfed Diablo
If you are a true BG fan, prepare to be disappointed because this feels more like Diablo. Imagine my surprise when I found out my mage class elf bears a chain mail, iron shield, and long sword, as well as a bow, and primarily uses weapons to fight while occasionally casting a spell. There is no strategy, just hack and smash. While this could still be fun, the game controls are atrocious on the phone - you cannot aim , your arrows and spells go everywhere and you end up flailing around like an NPC hoping to land a hit by chance. Then there is the whole jumping part - so unnecessary. I recommend including an auto-aim option for those who want to play on a phone .
The floating (and disappearing) platforms in the Thieve’s Guild is really, really, really frustrating me, causing a lot of wasted a lot of time and energy, and reducing the fun factor to zero. In an hour, this three-star review will zero out. Time’s up. I’m fed up with the run-jump-die-restart, run-jump-die-restart, run-jump-die-restart, run-jump-die-restart, run-jump-die-restart, crap. These constant and repeated micro-millisecond-reaction-time gymnastics are not what I signed up for in a Bard’s Tale “adventure” game. It stopped being fun over an hour ago. What a waste of money!
Everyone has had their say on game control issues, and yes, the bow/arrow aiming is challenging but I think the other item to be addressed is the fact that the game is so short. I never played this as a console game, but I finished this with ease using the iPad controls, not a joystick. Addons? DC? I’ll play again with a sorcerer and see how that goes
So does it just auto dump your stat points into Str for you or something? I don’t think i got to choose, and i doubt I’d pick str on a sorc Please let me know if im just missing a screen or flat out clueless. Thx. I want to play more but i get bummed my charas are all being built stupidly.
You guys. This was literally my favorite ps2 game growing up, and oh my goodness has this delivered and then some. I’ve been playing with the Backbone™️ and the graphics are chefs kiss. Best purchase of an app. So easy to handle. Did I mention no loading screens?
We have found a major bugs with two player mode. 1) the second player does not consistently increase levels even though the player has more than enough experience 2) the 2nd player can’t bring up inventory 3) you can’t change which player is 1st Features request: Player two players via controllers on a iPad is really annoying. Can you please add multiplayer support over the network instead ? The choices of weapons in the shops is poor and doesn’t appear to change. That is not how similar games work.
Thank you for putting this together. It is a unforgettable classic I love! A few bugs to consider; the auto camera is really annoying. It starts spinning in battle. The auto melee attack jumps off and keeps swinging in the air hitting nothing. I’m usually left defenseless and getting attacked. Did I mention I love this game.
I loved the original version. My siblings and I played this and the second one so much so I really enjoy having it on my phone. Little bit of a curve to get used to. Only thing I hate is the camera automatically moves a ton for me and it’s super irritating, especially mid battle. But still fun.
What an excellent port to mobile! Hopefully there are plans to port the sequel as well. Please fix the issue where you can't choose what stat to level, unable to move the cursor off of strength using touch controls.
Just as I remembered the games. The dark alliance games and champions of norath games were my favorite ps 2 games glad at least this one jumped to ios so I could enjoy it again. Love playing it with a controller.
For when the game was made, it has gotten some upgrades to graphics and faster functionality in my perspective. Loved the game as a kid and has Britten back key memories for me in my mid-20’s. 5stars best hack and slash there ever was in my opinion
Works flawlessly with controller on iPad Pro M2 This game is a bit slower and more methodical; excellent gameplay. No issues so far after ~8 hours with a dual sense and a DS4 controller.
Had fun, but my Sorceress doesn’t level up correctly. I know I should be able to assign attribute points every 4 levels, but the game doesn’t let me do that. It shows the attribute screen for a split second and then goes straight to skill points. I’m then unable to go back. If this isn’t fixed, the game is pretty unplayable for me.
The camera keeps rotating on its own when you attack enemies. It is really annoying and making it unplayable for me. You can fix it by enabling the option to fix the rotation of the camera. Also rotating the camera manually is such a pain as you need two fingers to do that. So you can’t move while you want to torture the camera.
Which is too bad as I kind of liked the story. Got to the first boss proper (in thieves guild) and he is just ridiculously hard. Blocking is necessary but clumsy and very position dependent. Might be more fun with a controller but I'm calling it despite spending $10 on it, after playing it for maybe 4 hours and soooo many deaths.
I’m very glad this game came to iOS. I haven’t had any issues with gameplay, the only grievance I have is when playing with a DualShock 4 it does not give the square, cross, triangle, circle prompts. Just the ABXY
Every time I reach 4 levels, it doesn’t let me choose attribute points, it says move the cursor but theres none in touch screen, And it automatically chooses strength without letting me choose other attributes…
The game is a perfect replica of my favorite game. I only hope they do the same for dark alliance 2! Updating to once again beg for DA2. Seriously that game is so good
I’m playing this with a PS5 Bluetooth controller and mirrored onto my TV screen. I love it! Give us more awesome console ports like this one, please! I would LOVE to see you port Hunter: The Reckoning (and more).
The game is pretty good but the button lay out is not user friendly.. I should be able to shield with one hand and heal with the others but all the actions are jumbled to one side taking away the old console feel
The reboots to pc and ps4 have been a delight, but this is unprecedented. This is now the best mobile game, congratulations, Black Isle Studios, ya did it. And what a great port, the controls are not original, but they feel great. Bring on DA2! ❤️
Here’s the thing guys, it’s always been a great game but unless you are playing with a controller you are not getting passed certain parts. You can’t get behind opponents and switch from blocking to attacking quickly enough. I took off my screen protector, i tried - it’s just not responsive enough
Awesome game. However I have played half way through and the game has bugged out and I can’t seem to load my saved game. I guess I’ll have to start all over.
I have the iPad 10 and there’s a bug where you can’t exit the cut scene in the dungeon if skeletons! It’s when you talk to the priest and he tells you to find the 3 urns! Please fix it so I can continue! Thank you!
Can’t initiate dialog or interact with anything on iPad making this purchase useless
I can’t play this game beyond the very first intro due to interactions with characters or objects not working. Tried to demand a refund via the AppStore interface however the submit button is grayed out. What a scam!
This is a really nice game although there is a high frustration factor with the 360° spin mentioned by previous users. This is really lame. Get rid of it.
I was super excited for the nostalgia for playing this again only to find the controls completely unusable. The terrible controls make what was a fun game frustrating and unplayable.
