Earth Hero: Climate Change

Wherever you are on your climate journey—disinterest, dread, nihilism, rage, optimism, obsession—this app is going to be a great tool for you. One night, I downloaded a bunch of zero-waste or climate-action-type apps (I'm in the "obsession" phase of my journey, you see), and this app is the only one I still use. And I use it regularly. First, it gives you a very rough estimate of your carbon footprint—prepare to be shocked. Hi, it's me, I'm the problem, it's me. Then it gives you categories of "actions" you can take to reduce your footprint, rated from easy to challenging, with the ability to set goals with deadlines in case you can't do it all right now, as much as you might want to. And the app has just the right amount of gamification—it's fun to browse and tap and make lists and such, but behind every compelling button or image is a hard-hitting list of tips, with links to credible resources and organizations doing the really hard work, like advancing policy, or innovating climate tech. And with every "action" you "achieve" you see your big ugly embarrassing carbon footprint go down just a little bit more. It's addictive, in the very best way.

I’m so happy to see sustainability enter the tech world through great apps like this🥰 I’ve deeply cared about environmental issues for at least a few years now, and I’ve recently gained a new sense of hope discovering the recent advancements made in digitalizing climate education. For some periods of time I’ve felt like I was carrying the weight of the world’s problems and guilt over how small the magnitude of my best efforts ultimately always were. But now seeing how much the small online community that fostered my education years ago has multiplied, and strengthened, and continued to stand resilient, is inspiring. Apps like Earth Hero give me the invaluable gift of community. It’s so much easier to maintain strength in my personal fight for climate action when I am able to see all the other people fighting that same fight with me. Getting to have the positive reinforcement drawn from a wealth of tips and information at your fingertips, plus encouragement from people who care about the same values, is really what we need and I love it.

I’m gonna admit that I’m pretty new to the environmental movement, but this app makes it so incredibly easy to get started, or continue, with your eco friendly actions. I love that not only can you calculate your own personal eco impacts with lots of precision, there is also a wide variety of actions recommended in the app that allow you to further reduce your emissions. I’ve learned a surprising amount of things from the scientific resources Earth Hero promotes which makes me feel so much more ready to take on climate challenges and support the right policies for positive change. Plus, I’ve been able to share this app with my family and friends as well so we can all work on climate goals together! Overall amazing app that works wonderfully and, to this day, I have had no technical issues with it! Thanks Earth Hero for helping change the way I look at the world!!

Love this app!! While I think systemic change should be prioritized over individual action, this is a great app that helps the user keep track of their own personal carbon footprint. I even learned quite a few things from their “actions” - for example, did you know there’s a tool out there where you can type in your bank & check to see if your bank funds oil?! I do wish there was a way you could undo *one* action’s impact on your carbon footprint without resetting the whole thing (for example, I can no longer air dry my clothes, so I know my carbon footprint isn’t as accurate anymore but I can’t undo the “action” by itself) but overall I think the app has a lot of great features, I can tell it’s been updated through the time I’ve had it, & it’s super user friendly & motivating!

I love this app. Though I was already doing a great many of the suggested actions, I was able to reduce my footprint much more. It helped me feel empowered and clear on my climate change impact. I love the graphics and interface. I’ve recommended this app. My only disappointment is that they do not mention peatlands conservation and going peat-free in the garden. Peatlands store enormous amounts of carbon —more than all the worlds forests—and release it when disturbed. The greenwashing out there can be confusing. There is a large movement in the UK to go peat-free. I submitted a proposal for this and did a great deal of research, and even wrote in again many months later. It has never been added as an action a year or more later, and I’ve become saddened by this. In general, new actions don’t seem to get added very often. Many of the actions also seem urban-, youth- and able-body oriented. That’s ok, but those just don’t apply.

I really like this app! It can help you feel like you’re making a difference without lying to you and exaggerating the effects of your individual choices. Also, sometimes I find that most of the things people tell you to do for the climate I’m already doing or planning to do. But this app has given me some pretty creative suggestions that I hadn’t even thought of. I especially like that it encourages you to educate yourself and become involved with climate movements. We can only do so much by ourselves. It’s also very helpful for measuring your impact compared to average people in your country and compared to average people in the world. Keeps me humble lol, I’m a very low impact American but a very high impact human apparently! Reasonable, thoughtful suggestions and a refreshing dose of optimism.

Really appreciate this app to see what areas I can improve in. The comparison of my emissions to those of an average person in my country as well as globally is really motivating, as is the graph of my emissions over time. It’s awesome that advocacy/activism is also featured in the app because change needs to happen on a larger level than at the individual level, and it needs to happen fast! Something I’d love to see in the app is the ability to track the items in the emissions survey on a shorter timeframe, for example weekly (or even better daily!), in a diary or something because I’m not sure how many kWh I used or miles I drove over the past year - or even how many times I ate a particular kind of meat over the past month!

I got the app to have something to track my actual environmental impact. When I initially filled out the survey, my footprint was higher than I thought, which was a bit disheartening to be honest. Then I started going through their action/goal list, and after checking the things I already do, the number went down, which gave me a little relief to know how much what I did made a difference. Of all the different acts they have, there were only a few I doubted I would ever accomplish. However, the app itself admits that no one person will be able/willing to complete every action; as long as you do something (& hopefully multiple things), you are decreasing your footprint which is a step in the right direction & adding up to a positive impact on the world around you. I recommend this for anyone looking for a starting point & a way to keep track of your overall footprint.

This app has great ideas for actions we can take in our everyday lives — and habits we can form! — to support a healthy planet. Each suggested action is scaled (easy? ambitious?) and its impact evaluated. Carbon footprint of own household and lifestyle is estimated according to info we provide (re travel, home heating, etc.) and our choice of actions taken and action goals amend that footprint estimate so we can see the effect of our actions on our own situation. When we sat particular goals, we can also accept future reminders to check in on how we’re doing. Wonderful! I do wish that geothermal were offered as an option in home heating. The only possible alternative among heat sources is “electricity,” which is not the same thing at all.

Earth Hero is by far the best app I have ever gotten. I have always tried to care for the environment, but I could never fully find a way to do so that can be readily achieved. Earth Hero gives a great variety of ways to help, in your house and in the world. It had motivated me by comparing me to others, to the world, and to the goal we need to stop this climate crisis. There are “actions” that you can take on this app. It has gotten me changing my everyday life to be more eco friendly. And these things aren’t unattainable, they’re easy to do! Plus, you can e-mail Earth Hero other ideas for “Actions” to do, and they might add them! I highly recommend this app! Anyone and everyone on this planet who has the ability to do these basic things should download this.

Earth hero is a great app for individuals of every level of climate activist to make change in easy ways! This app allows you to see your impact on the climate, so you are aware of the impacts that you have on the environment. The app provides tasks and goals for you to reach that help the environment, you can check them off if you complete them, or set them as goals for the future. This helps me know what I do already that helps our climate, and what other things I can do as well. It’s very informative, and never gives you tasks that are vague , it tells you why and how to do things + their impact and commitment level. It helps me understand what I can do more, and the impact I have now. Great app!

I recently became much more alarmed about the climate crisis, and I immediately began searching for ways I could reduce my carbon footprint and contribute to the fight against climate change. This app is a huge blessing to me: it helps me figure out what steps I can take as well as visualize how these steps will benefit the environment. I’m studying user experience design right now, and I have to complete a project where I add a feature to an existing app. I’m planning to add a feature to Climate Hero; I have a few ideas but I haven’t decided what I’m going to add yet. I’m wondering if the Climate Hero team would be interested in seeing my project when I’m finished with it? If you’re looking for more volunteers, I would love to contribute! :)

Thinking about climate change is overwhelming for me - there is so much to protecting the environment, that the sheer magnitude makes me feel paralyzed, not knowing where to even start. Earth Hero removes so much of that difficulty and gives me a lot of clarity. It lists actions you can take, no matter your situation - whether you can only do something small, or if you’re ready and able to tackle a large project! I feel so much more capable and more involved! The team behind it is super nice, too! They give you all the tools and information you need for every single action, and they really set you up for success. It’s a really wonderful app and I love it!!!

It’s a great app that helps you to track your own carbon footprint along with inspiring to lower it even further! It makes sure to send reminders and even suggestions to make sure you don’t give up, which is a good way to keep you on track and never forgetting about it. It can show you just how eco friendly you may already be and spots you need to work on. I’ve never had any tech issues or glitches and it’s not a complicated app to use once you look around. Overall one of the best apps to have if you are inspired to do something about climate change because every action counts!! Definitely recommend :)

Climate Change is a very large issue to tackle. It often seems very overwhelming and hopeless, but Earth Hero gives power back to us as individuals. With the app, we can track our own emissions and the effects we have on our planet. Earth Hero provides us with simple changes that can have larger effects in the long run, and also provides a wide variety of actions as well. I appreciate the options, so if one action can’t be done there are plenty of others I can do to still reduce my footprint and help spread awareness. Earth Hero isn’t just an app with a positive impact but a community as well.

I had a lot of Climate-Change related anxiety, and this app gives you a comprehensive look into you (or your family’s), giving you comparisons to your country and global average, but I actually feel like it’s doing something, because it gives you steps to reduce your emissions, with specific actions you can take, so it doesn’t just leave you in the dark. I wish it had a kid mode, as a teenager, I don’t actually own two cars and drive in them, but my parents do. I also would like this to be a collaborative app, so you could share it with the people you live with in your household, that way you can make a target together. Love the app though!

Decreasing our personal carbon foot prints sounds so difficult and it's tough to figure out where to start. This beautifully constructed app provides practical, quantifiable, and proven ways in which each of us as individuals can be better stewards of our environment. What a great way to remove the abstract complexity of taking action and show that each of us individually can have an impact. Of course, we need major structural change to truly alter the current path to a warming planet. This app at least gives us a path of what we can as individuals in parallel with pushing for systemic change.

This app not only provides new ideas for sustainability and climate actions, but it’s also great positive reinforcement. Every time I achieve a goal or update my emissions profile I get a burst of energy that pushes me forward. I can’t wait for new actions with each update, and the app also makes it easy to submit your own ideas for climate actions. I wrote up a climate action myself and did the research for it, and it got published after one or two updates. It really makes you feel like you’re part of a team and not alone in this giant issue.

We have have been looking for an app that could introduce our family to action items addressing climate change and here it is Earth Hero! Our 11 and 9 year olds love learning the different steps in our lifestyle we can take as a family to help become more sustainable and responsible people. EarthHero is intuitive to navigate through and the information is broken down into understandable chunks. Highly recommend for anyone who is ready to take action (small or large) and make a difference!

This app gave me some hope that I can do my small part and have a ripple effect. Individual changes really do have an impact, and this app offers options beyond individual change such as joining a climate action group and voting with the climate in mind. The visual of your emissions vs the average Americans vs the average person compared to 2030 targets is SO NICE to have, because it takes all of the random impacts we worry about and shows them to you as they are as a whole. It keeps inspiring me to make changes, and to get involved locally.

If you want to analyze your own carbon emissions, find out ways to reduce them, or learn more about climate impacts, this is your app. Got me thinking a lot about small changes I can make to be more sustainable. One thing I’d like to see is more ideas to make positive personal changes that are viable for people in rental housing. Switching from a gas stove to electric or installing a heat pump, for example, are things a lot of us would love to do, but a lot of people can’t afford to make major modifications or simply aren’t allowed to as a tenant.

Out of all the carbon tracking apps I’ve used, Earth Hero is the best app for tracking & recommending sustainable actions. It’s the most accurate carbon calculator so far. As a person in the sustainability field, their list is comprehensive & doable for both a person new to sustainability and for experts! I like that each action I take is rated in terms of high/low impact & that I can see my carbon footprint reduce after I add actions. I am also able to set reduction goals so I can move closer to meeting the UN’s 2030 target carbon footprint for individuals. Recommendations - a teams/groups feature so we can keep our friends, coworkers, & family accountable - automatically track our driving (some apps connect to Apple Health & use location services to do this) - fix a glitch with the vehicle section (I am having trouble choosing the hybrid option) - get granular with food consumption (include pescatarian and allow optional weekly inputs)

Really like this app. The specificity of the Actions you can take to start making a difference is really helpful for me, because I just feel overwhelmed by it all a lot of the time. Love that there are tangible, realistic goals, and that I can set them myself. Also enjoy seeing that the highest rated Actions are truly high-impact things, with the highest impact often being things like Talk About Climate change. This app really puts you in a great, positive mindset to start making changes in your life, if you’re ready to do so.

I have had nothing but positive experiences with this app! I like the initial measurement of emissions & the delivery of that information not being scornful, but instead with the hope that this knowledge will increase awareness & motivate the user to make better choices that will impact their measurement. I’ve found other sites & apps that just make me feel guilty that I’m not doing enough, but this app emphasizes the good choices I’m making & never makes me feel bad or guilty just because my emissions aren’t near zero.

I think this is an amazing app amongst other sustainability apps I’ve come upon. It helps visualize how much pollution one creates compared to the American population and then global population. It also has great UI design and great information architecture! A few things I noticed were that some texts overlapped some other information. It seemed like some screens weren’t finished in design. And some action text or category text could use a hint more color or charisma to engage a user. Otherwise! I definitely recommend this app to help gain points to save the earth and understand how you can be an advocate for climate change.

If every person with a device had this app on their home screen and actively used it, our chances of reaching optimistic climate targets would be much higher. Earth Hero is an intuitive and streamlined tool to help guide humanity’s efforts to heal and save the planet at a community level. We in the Global North are responsible for a disproportionate percentage of climate change while those in the Global South suffer the most severe consequences. It’s our responsibility to make the greatest change and do the most work.

If everyone downloaded this app, our world would be healthier and safer for life on our planet. I have always been very carbon footprint conscious. This app reaffirmed the actions I take and gave me clear ideas for new steps I can take. This app is great if you are just starting out in reducing your carbon footprint or have been making a conscious effort for a while. I truly believe if everyone downloaded this app and reduced their footprint by 10%, we could manage our climate crisis.

I’ve been using this for about a month now and it’s really useful. I’ve reduced my carbon footprint by a lot now, and I’ve gotten some family members to even join the fight in climate change. It’s really useful to notice things you do wrong, and it’s also a good source of motivation. I even compete with my friend sometimes for the more actions we do. I honestly really like this app and it has helped me become even more climate conscious and take more actions to help.

I love this tool to discover new ideas on how to address climate change and keep track of my progress on them. There are hundreds of climate and eco actions and a carbon tracker built into it as well. It's helpful to reflect on my carbon footprint. The climate crisis is real, and so is climate crisis anxiety. Do something about it! Here are some actionable ways you can make a difference. This app is a positive and productive way we as individuals can make a difference with something that often feels insurmountable. I see Earth Hero totally taking off as more and more people make the choice to take earth-friendly actions: easy, medium, and hard! I’m so glad this app exists.

As much as I like the app, I am concerned about the part of civil disobedience. There are many people like me who are afraid of going to jail. I don’t think I would last very long behind bars, given how I may be confronted by a dangerous criminal or I may not get the proper treatment that I am needed since I have autism. What I would like is a way for people like me to be involved the right way in the environmental movement without having to jeopardize our health both mentally and physically

I was looking for something to help me figure out how to do my part to address climate change. This app gave me a great place to start and track my goals. It’s got a mix of action ideas for both system change and personal carbon footprint which I love. Focusing on just personal emissions isn’t going to fix this mess. The list of climate organizations is really helpful. I have no idea how many there are. Great app for our environment and climate. Thanks Earth Hero!

I have been doing environment policy work for awhile and I am glad to see this app. This puts information and power in the hands of the individual to address the climate crisis. While I would propose there are more actions that could be added and some fine tuning of some of the particular areas. This is a must have app for everyone. This ought to become something that we are all working on, caring for our world, the place that we call home. This app puts our care in the palm of our hands.

The main benefit of the app is increased awareness of what we can do as individuals to help safeguard our planet. Some of those actions are really easy and it feels good to think about positive changes we can make. I’m also learning about new actions that can make a difference. We have a long way to go but every little step by each individual adds up and I’d like to thank the people who made this app for that.

I love how user driven it is. You can do the actions that work for you and even submit your own actions to help others become more sustainable. I do wish the emissions section could be expanded. I would like to see more than just my annual emissions. Maybe even entering it in real time so you can see it go up every day. I think that would have a larger immediate impact on me watching it increase when I drive, eat meat, or shower etc.

As someone just starting to learn about some zero- waste, sustainable, and eco-friendly ways of living, I really appreciate this app just giving me so many things to do that I either didn’t think about or didn’t quite know what to do! It’s easy to understand, has some pictures and graphs that are great for visual learners (like myself) and it overall just has a lot of happy/ positive vibes! I would 10/10 recommend this app for anyone looking to do some good for the planet!

I appreciate the developers thoughtfulness in not being too pushy, yet very helpful. My initial set up in the app, I even learned a thing… about natural gas…. To actually start calling it methane gas which it is. I find it useful to see what my carbon footprint is so I can focus on reducing it. I even reached out to the developers with an action suggestion to which they quickly replied and asked if I wanted to get involved in writing that action up. It’s a lovely app. Thanks devs.

I am starting a journey into creating a more sustainable lifestyle and Earth Hero really helps paint a picture! I like that each action has an easy to hard scale and it tells you how impactful these actions are. I think more actions would be an awesome addition. I also really liked the graph of my personal carbon footprint. I would like to see the option for nuclear energy. Is that good? Bad? Not sure but I would like to see the carbon emissions for that on my personal graph. I sent this app to friends who are trying to make the same choices and they really liked it!

This app has been great in motivating me to make small changes in my life that make a difference in the climate change and remember to keep incorporating it into my daily life. I keep learning new ways to reduce carbon emissions and keep setting the bar higher. Not every change you make has to be expensive or difficult, and it can often be interesting to find a way to complete each one.

I’m new to the app but so far I love it! It’s inspiring me to do more to lower my carbon footprint. I’ve been an activist for years and want to connect with more people and groups- and to coordinate our efforts. We stopped our Friday climate strikes during Covid but am wondering if we can start them again- it’s outside and we can SD. Eager to find out what other groups are doing. I hate Facebook and right now that’s what most of my political and environmental groups use. I like this idea of an app! Thanks:)

I really like the ideas that make it easy to act on Climate Change. It’s simple to understand where I can reduce my own carbon pollution and I like the personalized suggestions. The automated features make it straightforward to update. I also like that this is a non-profit team so they don’t have ulterior motives. It’s great to be a part of the solution to stop global warming. Great green app with carbon footprint tracker that helps me improve our environment!

This app is excellent for providing many ways to help us care for our great Earth. It can be small to significant steps, such as watching a documentary which is pretty low-effort, to putting up solar panels, which is an investment. You can save “actions” if you need to think about them, or you can choose them to do actively. It also provides resources to learn about climate change and what we do to our Home.

So, I just discovered this app about a week ago, and I love it. This year, I wanted to start making better decisions and smarter choices to do my part for this beautiful planet that we live in. With Earth Hero, the UI is amazing and I can easily track the actions that I have completed, set goals and even save actions to complete at a later time. So grateful to have this app to do my small part to help the planet one action at a time.

This is the second carbon footprint app that I’ve downloaded, and I really like how it works. The layout is really easy to use, and clean looking. All of the little habits, and activities, or fairly easy and can be completed rather easily and they make a huge impact. This app helps me keep track of how I can help my environment. I would recommend this up to anyone who enjoys trying to be more sustainable and eco-friendly.

I’ve shopped around for good apps that support sustainability and this is one of the top 3-4 I use daily. It has a lot of helpful resources such as Ecosia (didn’t know about it before EarthHero), which is a browser I’ve opted for instead of Safari. It gives tips and ideas on different types of actions you can take to reduce your carbon footprint. I didn’t realize I’d done a lot already, but there is still more I can do to make a difference... EarthHero helps with that.

Some actions aren’t achievable, which is unfair. For example, I don’t have an air conditioner! For those you should have alternative versions. Also, some actions are contrary to my learning style or ethical choices - I’d much rather read a report than listen to a podcast and I refuse to do social media until I have full control of my data!

Although the actions suggested by this app arguably have a positive impact, the root cause of our world’s problem is an altered ecological balance — we are not replacing the extent of carbon we burn. I wish this app focused on restoration of ecosystems.. getting in touch with nature, planting things, and actions associated with real green solutions . In my opinion... , the solution to our crisis is to repair a sense of connection with the natural world and its cycles. Focusing on technology further alienates our species from this connection. Maybe y’all can add some actions that address some of these concerns ..

People need to address the climate crisis, and I think this app is a great start. I like how there is a good variety of actions, and how your actions effect your carbon emissions. It’s a good way to care for the planet, and having actions as goals are excellent motivation. This app can help you get even further into an environmental perspective, and into groups against climate change. Overall, I think the app is great and everyone should download it.
