This app has it all, and with the new update I’m glade we now have control of shutter and the ability to toggle between the dual lenses on the iPhone XS Max. I’ve used the Cinema robot with the moment app and Filmic pro, and they are limited when it comes to using the full features the gimbal is capable of through this app. I think for serious phone filmmakers, it would be awesome and pretty much complete if the app included “LOG” and/or “Flat” picture profiles so we don’t have to leave the app and miss out on all of the excellent features already built in. Pretty please put a LOG profile setting.
I think the app is wonderfully done. Keeps things basic but provides wonderful features that make sense which most iPhone users love to see. Hence the reason they have an iPhone in the first place. I really enjoyed being able to change the sensitivity of the movi within the app. I also enjoyed how the app provides the ability to switch between 1080p and 4K video. I think the developer of this app was really focusing on what is going to make a user’s experience easy but beneficial from using the app. Which they did and I am very pleased with. If your looking for all the bells and whistles like being able to control exposure on the camera then I’d recommend spending the money on a dslr and a movi pro, but the movi and phone is great to capture cinema movies without having to invest a fortune. Cheers!
The Movi app works pretty well, i really wish there was better hardware support for the iPhoneX as I would love to switch between the built in Telephoto and Wide angle lens native to the iPhoneX. The Moment lens look cool, but I am not ready for them yet. It would also be nice if standby mode turned the screen off to keep phone cool while shooting water sports videos from a boat. The movi did pretty well but sometimes would roll depending on GForces.
Good software for the best mobile gimbal, but lacks some key features
I think the Movi Cinema Robot is the best gimbal on the market. I love the form factor, the build quality, and the physical button layout. But this review is about the app - which, is fine - good, even. In some ways, it’s *really* good. Manual camera controls, intuitive integration with the MCR gimbal, different quality levels for recording, etc. The focus is clearly on tools that allow even high-end filmmakers to integrate the MCR into their workflow (without sacrificing ease for those that are less experienced). However, the app is missing a couple key features that have made it difficult for me to get rid of my competitor gimbal: face/object tracking, and live streaming. With Freefly’s focus on filmmaking rather than other forms of video, I understand why these may not be high priority features. But the MCR could be the best all-around mobile video tool if Freefly would add robust implementations of those two features. Face/object tracking and live streaming, please!
Would be 5 stars if it let me access all my normal camera features like 2x zoom and stills. I’ve found when traveling I have to have both Movi and default Camera ready to swap between to compensate for the few missing features.
App is absolutely inferior to others on the market and feels like the developers had some toy-like visions for what they wanted to do with the Movi and never focused on the basic functionality that filmmakers need. The DJI Osmo Mobile (v1) is much better - it keeps a level horizon while the Freefly has a horizon tilt that defeats the purpose of using it. Unless you like spending more money for the sake of it to buy an inferior product, avoid their MCR. Their big camera rigs are amazing, but looks like they don’t care about this one. Updates are few and far in between - their EXACT words!!
I have used the MōVI Pro for years now and this is my absolute favorite way to use a camera. It’s so compact and accurate that it makes getting great footage so easy. Pairing this with moment lenses and an ND filter is the best lightweight travel setup in my opinion. The one thing that I’d love to see added is a LOG shooting mode.
I can't express how irritated I am at this app. I've tried using my iPhone Xs to record video but the app stays stuck trying to do something in the background showing a spinner animation on the record button when I stop recording. Nothing happens for quite some time and then the app starts recording again. When you stop recording, you get another spinner. I've lost so much footage I just feel like my entire trip was wasted because of this bum of a software. Ugh.
Before I got the Movi and this app I hated to post video. But now I show off regularly with my new video superpower. Every week I’ve tried a new app feature. All really cool, with incredible results from someone who has never previously picked up a video camera.
Just got my Movi and it’s as ridiculously cool and fun as it looked. It really feels like magic. App is an added bonus, although it can take some figuring out to unlock more tricks so definitely suggest reading / watching tutorials and making use of in-app support options.
Love the gimble give it5 stars but the app hasn’t been updated in years wasn’t updated for iOS 13 now we’re on iOS 14 still no update it seems like they forgot us for the lack of updates I’ll give the app a 3 star
They basically need to clone Filmic Pro. You can’t even switch between the 2 lenses on an iPhone 7/8 Plus in the app. Needs separate focus/exposure boxes/locks. Also would love the ability to increase the video but rate (like Filmic Pro) Also, no time-lapse mode. Huge missed opportunities in this app. You create an awesome tool in the MōVI that can do so many great things, but handicap it with very basic videos features in the app.
Love the robot and the app is nice. But please add panoramic photo mode to take full advantage of the robot’s ability to pan super steadily from pony A to point B. Please also consider remote control ability to take full control of the robot, or allow user to map the buttons for robot movement control. Thanks
Love the product can’t wait to see the options you all add to it. Need more flexibility with formats and camera options. Not sure what’s going on but I can’t import any of my footage into Premiere Pro without transcoding it first.
Yes, it’s built wonderfully and performs essential gimbal functions but lack of development makes it feel like abandonware. Or like buying in on a kickstarter that failed to live up to the sales pitch. I think DJI and the other competition swallowed them. For nearly a third of the price you get the almighty Osmo Mobile 3 (or Osmo Pocket) with many more features (ActiveTrack, for example). At the very least, I wish they had communicated that development has ceased. :-(
I just discovered this gimbal. Since Filmpro will be unobtainable due to subscription pricing. Will you keep the app active for the next 10 years for. If not, what other app have full integration with the gimbal beside Filmpro.
The app freezes every 3 seconds, the recording function is finicky at best (it randomly stops recording and doesn’t start/stop recording when pressing the record button on the unit), and no matter how many times the app is restarted or the unit is powered down and back up again the issue is not resolved.
All the basics are here for simple filmmaking, but what impressed me were the advanced features. Camera roll, time lapse and advanced camera controls. Sold. Well executed and makes it fun in the process. Sign me up for two.
I love the Freefly Movi gimbal. I also think the app is clean and has cool features. However, it is truly unusable until it is patched: 1. It [very] frequently fails to save the video. This has been particularly painful when capturing action shots that cannot be reproduced. 2. Further more, it consistently “freezes” in a way that still shows video but doesn’t let any of the buttons work on phone or gimbal and both devices need to be restarted. Yesterday, I gave up on a beautiful timelapse because it wouldn’t let me interact with it with 6 attempts. I could offer a few other places for improvement, but none of that matters until these two issues are solved.
This is an amazing product and app when it works. When it doesn't, it's just a pricey paperweight. Customer service is unfortunately no better. Without changing anything to my phone or apps like Movi or Filmic Pro, the Movi Cinema Robot no longer connects to anything. I sent a request for support and received a ticket confirmation last Thursday. It's now been a week and no response from anyone at Movi. I understand that this product may not be as important to them as their pro systems but in the end, not being able to use a product no matter the amount of money spent is a shame and the lack of customer service is inexcusable.
Then it just started to freeze when I opened the app. I reset my phone, I checked my storage and it was fine. I finally just deleted the app. I really don’t want this to happen again
I love the gimbal and the app but feel like it's capable of doing more but has just been forgotten. For something that costs so much, is should be doing a heck of a lot more. I'm hoping more features are added soon otherwise, I'm selling this thing and getting a DJI osmo pocket.
I loved this gimbal but now the iPhone 13's camera has to be unbalanced far out to the left in order not to have the gimbal in the shot. Please come up with a fix so I can keep using this amazing tool!
Love this app so far. The ease-of-use is far better than any other gimbal app I’ve used. Not to mention the design of the UI is superior. Hoping for support for a flat color profile or integration with FiLMiC Pro in the near future.
I love how elegantly this app is layed out, no clutter on the screen but still powerful enough for all sorts of cinematic moves. Also connects really quickly and so far seems very stable on my iPhone X. Great job Freefly!
This app was great when I had my iPhone 7 Plus. I now have the iPhone XR running the latest iOS and I am unable to get past the entry screen of allowing app permissions. It will not give me the option to allow camera/photos/microphone access. This pretty much makes my Movi an expensive paperweight. Would love to get this figured out before the holidays!
Love Movi paired with moment lenses. One request - I do wish there was the opportunity to grab a photo while filming or to be able to switch between video and photo. Thanks Movi!
Any chance you’d be able to update your app to support the latest iOS versions and devices? Many of us have working Movi hardware that our phones no longer support. Please update this app so we can keep using the devices we purchased without fail. Tyvm!
Are there any updates coming? Or are you guys leaving it the way it is? Ever single app I have gets updated every other week! And other ones every week. Gives us some love back!
To put out a product and not update the app is unacceptable . Bad business. And now the gimbal is no longer being produced. But still, an honest company should and would update the app. Considering the price we paid for this gimbal. You basically just hung us out to dry. Pathetic and cowardly.
I saw the owner post something year back saying soon we are coming out and here we are 2020 , I’m going to sell my rig. Go back to dji. There are no consistent update BUYERS. Please spend your money on a osmo or another gimbal that actually gets attention. This is paperweight and you as the consumer will be frustrated with how bad this is.
Several times I’ve had the app error out when I finish a longer recording and the whole recording is deleted. Definitely using filmic pro instead of this app moving forward.
Hey there. Love this gimbal and the amazing stuff I can do with it. The only negative is having to switch to a DJI Osmo when wanting to track a subject with Facial recognition. Any chance that is still in the works? I noticed there hasn’t been an update to the device or App in 10 months. You guys still developing for this device? Thanks again.
I love the app and product. Makes me professional. Recently, I am having trouble with recording a long video. When I take more than 20min video, I get an error and video gets not saved. If you could let me know how I can fix this. It would be wonderful. Otherwise, the app is a masterpiece. Thanks.
Whoever designs UX for this app — a ticket to heaven to this person. The best application among the segment. The Gimble itself has a couple of flaws, e.g.: it does not sustain linear motion, accelerates instead, too heavy to handle it for a couple of hours, “greensreens” videos sometimes(you just loose the footage).. but they are improving constantly. Great job Freefly!!
Please update it’s been 4 months. Also please add filmic pro API as other gimbals have so we can use all features. Look at your reviews and see how much it is requested! Please listen to your customers.
Works for the first 5 seconds and then it freezes. I’ve reinstalled it and restarted my phone and it doesn’t fix it. Sometimes it works but mostly doesn’t. Used to work back then.
Is this item still supported? No updates in 5 month
Hey there, i was thinking of purchasing the freefly movi but wanted to know if this app is still supported or if its being abandoned. I see that no update on the app has been published in the last 5 months. Thanks
Movi is a compact filmmaking tool designed to help tell your story. We’ve packed all of our tricks into the world’s most portable, adaptable, and intuitive cinema robot to allow users to execute stunning video quickly and easily. Note: This app is designed to work with Movi Cinema Robot and functionality will be very limited without a Movi.
