I love my OW and have over 300 miles on it. I ride with my family a lot, on the beach, in town, and around my college campus. Although I haven’t sustained any real injuries from riding because I always keep my speed under like 16 mph and wear all my protective gear, there are lots of daredevils out there who like to push the 20 mph limit (like my stepdad and other reviewers here) or folks who are just unaware of how fast they are going and end up nosediving often without a detectable enough warning. It might be nice to have an option where your phone gets alerted once you’ve breached like the 17 mph mark for example because at that speed you’re pretty close to pushing it too far, falling or being booted off, and possibly sustaining pretty bad injuries. I think that a loud audible alarm or notification of some sort would be helpful for those types of incidents if such a feature hasn’t been implemented already. Another thing, is it possible to make a widget for your Lock Screen to show important information during your ride, such as current speed, so that you don’t have to unlock your phone while riding? If it’s possible I think that would help out a lot! It could be something you enable or disable maybe. Other than that, please keep up the great work and ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET AND PROTECTIVE GEAR SUCH AS ELBOW WRIST AND KNEE PADS! Xoxo
I love my Onewheel and am so stoked that it exists. However there a few holes with the app as it exists today. The app is pretty bare bones. It does the basics pretty well but i feel it could benefit from both improved reliability and more focus on safety. Sometimes the app tells me I need to update it to connect to the board (but I’m using the latest version of the app). Restating the app usually fixes this. The current speed on the app seems to update in near-realtime which I appreciate, however the current speed being passed on to the Apple Watch seems to be laggy. Improving this would be huge, as the watch is the ideal way to monitor speed. A native Apple Watch app would be cool. Also, I’m not sure if I’ve experienced pushback or not, but I have been thrown off the front of the board at high speeds a couple of times. A stern alert to watch or phone that pushback has occurred and shutdown is imminent would be HUGE so that the rider could hopefully rectify the situation in time. That’s really the biggest hole for me and I think that really needs some attention. Love the product overall and I try to monitor my speed as best I can to avoid getting thrown but the onewheel just lends itself to cruising so nicely. Some features to assist the rider there would be awesome.
Kinda wish it told you whats wrong like a check engine light
I had my one wheel for a while and i was riding it and it took a tumble and every time it tapped the nose it would turn off then i was done with the ride I brought it inside and then i went to turn it on in the house not inside (“I have alot of space in my house”) it made a really loud softish click and when you try to get one and go it would shut off and I tried to connect to to guys alot but no one really answered and the help sheets really didnt have what i need so if the board could tell you what’s wrong because i was clueless for the past month and a half until i took it apart and saw the problem then i fixed it now its up and running if it told you the problem that would be nice and pretty cool if something was off and the board is still rideable give the app like a little check engine light on one of the corners that would be nice because im not traveling 300 miles to get it fixed.
I don’t want to update the app so FM locked me out
The app has now become unusable and cannot access any data about my board while I ride unless I update the app. This forceful nature is exactly why I don’t want to update. This company would turn my board into a brick to turn a profit. Once I figure out how to report this further with Apple the the FCC I’m going to. This company is wack. I just want my speed and battery levels shown, not forced to be on whatever version they want me on. FFM. And to be fair I love the onewheel but I nearly despise everything the company behind it stands for. Updates continue to block 3rd party mods and limiting all potential of the board itself. I paid two grand for this board, I should have the right to have it serviced or repaired as I please. Especially after the warranty period has ended. Please be more like all other action sports and embrace peoples preferences and adaptability with their boards and the products that are developed with them. Instead of making it harder for people to use their wheels you could work with the industry to create something that people are excited to spread the stoke about.
As others have noted, the app has no audible warnings whatsoever. If pushback takes place, there should be an option to be alerted audibly instead of just a vibration, which can be very difficult to detect due to the body vibration inherent in riding the OW itself over many types of terrain. It’s such a no-brainer that I suspect that there’s a specific reason (of which we’re unaware) that it hasn’t been implemented. Whatever the reason, it can’t be more important than the added safety of an audible alert that may prevent a nosedive. While a comparatively minor issue, it is annoying that you must allow the app to track your location all the time in order to set up automatic recording of rides. The “only while using the app” option should work just fine; all you’d have to do is open the app when you start your ride, and when the app connects to the board, it starts a new ride. Very, few apps require and merit full-time location tracking, and this is definitely not one.
Good app…needs a little more innovation to be amazing!!!
Overall it’s a good app but would be nice to have an easier way to swap between boards or automatically switch to the board if only one is active. It would also be awesome to have some more achievements. Would be awesome to be able to get an achievement each month by meeting certain criteria. Might also be cool to have special achievements throughout the year that would be for OneWheel anniversaries or community related achievements. It would also be nice to have see more stats on the leaderboards. Like average miles per day, and to see the 5 riders above and below you are a couple of ideas. Thanks for your work so far!
Wasn’t bad enough that the app forced updated with the local app disabled. Now with all apps updating disabled AND data turned off for the app, you get to a screen that essentially FORCES you to update the app to use its product. First you’re forced to update your GT and if you don’t, you lose app usage for the GT (a 2200$ product btw). Now if you don’t update to their most recent version of the app, you lose ALL Functionality. What’s the big deal you say? How about MULTIPLE board failures after the update. Just look at how many times the app has been updated in the last 3 weeks. It’s hardly functioning in its current version, they are desperately trying to get a grip on their app, their product, and their IP while everyone suffers. Think the XR and Pint/Pint X is going to be better in the future? If their current onslaught of app updates shows you anything, it’s that there is no future of motion coming soon to your product. FFM
- When attempting to get “time of day” achievements nothing gets recorded. Phone is in PST time zone. Recording a ride from 11pm to 11:20pm does not result in anything counting towards 11pm to 1am night owl rides. - Streak achievement basically counts days ridden. I’ve ridden 40+ consecutive days and logged every ride. Streak remains stuck at “9 days” - Custom shaping remains “in the shaping bay” unsure if that is intentional or not. Suggest adding text to app to let us know how to unlock that. - If you set battery to allow charge to 100%, then charge it up to 100%, then change the setting to 90%, the board reports it is at 90% despite being at 100%. This is a problem when you want to ride downhill or are trying to estimate your range. - Current battery percent should display on the maps page when a ride is in progress so that you don’t have to flip back and forth
So I love my one wheel before this I didn’t want to pay 70 bucks for the colored accessories on a board but It came with so I decide spary paint and let dry so I did that a few hours later was get ready for a ride and I try turn it on and it makes makes hsssss sound strange i go to tell someone I go do that while doing that I heard big HSSSSS sound so go with person and I to go it smoking and kind of crackling so we get the hose spray and by then the neighbors asking if everything is ok it under control but stil smoking but calming so after that we go inside to see when the warrant expires it was yesterday oh how annoying we don’t know if they will gives use a new one or we have full price for one day off warent other than that the battery on the phone is not right one time it said it was at a 100 but then it shut flick me off love it has few issues
It takes the fun out of cruising to your favorite destinations (like the beach, a crowded park or a co-working space) and having to watch the OneWheel like a hawk; especially when you drank too much coffee and need to ask someone to watch your stuff at the coffee shop) Would be great to keep thieves (or children without helmet) from turning on the board or getting away with theft. No security is 100% but at least it will be a theft deterrent from unauthorized use & resale... Not asking for GPS or hardware tracking, it could be implemented now purely in software by making the board totally disabled until an authorized handshake is made with the phone (the board would essentially be a brick that is worthless to steal) Other than that.. I would like to thank Future Motion for making an wonderful and fun alternative way for getting around!
Update: since the last two updates my board will connect randomly disconnect and I have no idea until I go to look at my mileage and find out the app not only disconnected and the ride recording stopped and STILL have no custom shaping My main complaints are the fact that Safety beep on the GT barely audible when riding the board it would make more sense for your phone to chime or perhaps a smart watch or vibrate even…it’s also silly that the app does not work on a smart watch unless the corresponding phone is turned on and has the app open as well… my phone died one day and as my car broke down… luckily I had my board so I was able to ride home, The downside being that it was pitch black outside and without the phone app I have no way to turn the headlights on so I was stuck riding hold down the side of the highway with no lights on my board
I like seeing what mode I’m in while riding (redwood, pacific x, elevated etc…) I’m a pint X owner and too many times since the updates I’ve had the mode switch from pacific x to redwood while I have the app open and putting it into my pocket without locking my screen. I do this so I can pull out my phone while riding to quickly glance at my battery percentage and speed. What’s been happening is it switches modes as I’m putting my phone in my pocket and I don’t realize it until I’m riding and I receive severe pushback. Having even small text letting you know what mode you’re in without having to stop your ride and get off wait for the screen to change to be able to check the mode.
I love riding my OnewheelXr and I try to ride each day. Have 220mile on it with ID SunWheelXr. The last update seemed to have caused the BT connection to be unreliable and requires the OW pwr to cycle to eventually connect. It always connected for before the update. Today the App lost my 2weeks of leaderboard streak which really is annoying as I was up to 52 on the board , did a ride and it reset the streak to 0 for no reason. Finally, FM needs to step it up on safety features on this App! Why not set programmable alerts on top speeds and when the OW is going to nosedive on you without warning???? Needs programmable audiobook warnings and watch alerts. The nosedive issue is the top concern for me and my safety. At the 100mil mark a few months ago I was on flat pavement in Mission mode. The board shut down on me at 28+ mph without any detectable pushback which I was looking for. Needless to say after a torn rotator cuff and the severe damage to my landing shoulder I want someone at FM get the app fixed for safety! No excuses pls! Still it’s the most fantastic product I have ever owned I and just keep riding always smiling!!
You essentially need this app for battery level and range, but the accuracy is questionable in at least two ways. First, every week the battery, after a full charge, the battery's percentage is less and less - 100% then 98% then 97% and now three weeks later the max I get is 96%. I can't believe the actual battery is losing capacity as the app indicates. The other issue is the lifetime mileage. When I first connect to the app when powering up my board the lifetime mileage amount is accurate for about 4 seconds then for some reason always changes to 13 miles. I've reported both to OneWheel support and heard NOTHING back. They need an updated and accurate application for how important it is when using the awesome awesome OneWheel...love me OneWheel!!
The app gives great information and customization to how you ride. There are some features I think are missing though that would make it so much nicer. I think every onewheel should have custom shaping, it’s all software and it’s either laziness or they want you to pay for most expensive model (probably the later). I also don’t like how you must have your phone with you to use it. A lot of people have smartwatches and yet they’re useless without the devices they’re trying to replace. Lastly I think you should be able to lock/turn off your onewheel with the app, it would add peace of mind.
FOCUS IN DIGITAL SHAPING AND REPAIR AND UPGRADE FRIENDLY
Please focus on making the app better I gave it a 2 star simply cause the digital shaping has been disabled since I got my GT and I have Almost 1000 miles on my GT and since then a different company has come out with a arguably better one wheel that has digital shaping as soon as you get the board but I gotta say thank you for dropping the performance tires that’s a step in the right direction but you guys gotta put your feet on the gas and get to working on the app and maybe right to repair and come out with some upgrade parts for the Onewheel GT perforce upgrades that is that are user friendly and doesn’t void the warranty cause float wheel has right to repair so should you guys you would get way kroe service and way more isotope feedback
Good update that removes essential headlight switch
You used to be able to toggle your headlight's brightness and/or turn it off while riding, but the new interface that comes with the recent update only allows you to do so when traveling at 3 mph or less. This creates a number of situational problems, such as when you need to turn off your headlight quickly and when you need to adjust brightness during a ride. Please create a fix that re-enables riders to access headlight settings while riding, and not just at 3 mph or less.
Love everything about product (own pintx and XR) but should love to add one little safety feature to phone and watch app. When riding one wheel and reaching push back make vibration and sound to go off and make it so we can toggle which one we want to use or both to warn us about reaching push back. Makes it even more safe to use one wheel and less possibilities of nose dives. Thank you and I hope you still listening to community. Love your products and my kids excited to learn to ride one too.
Please make a competitive electric unicycle! It will need the following: 4” wide 18”-20” tire with good tread 2500 watt motor 1500+ amp hour battery 80 mile range 35 mph cruising speed Extra large foot plates with high clearance Good sturdy trolley handle (centered) Extra bright, properly angled head light Very durable shell designed with comfort in mind and good padding Safety (speed reducing) threshold that slows the wheel down at 25% or less battery. Less is more Great speakers and lighting customization options. Solid app reliability like the Onewheel has (you would be a leader by far in this area) Ride customization in the app would be rad too! Anti theft control within the app A suitable and effective mud guard A cutoff sensor for when you need to lift the wheel. If Future Motion made such a product with these attributes it would be earth shattering! Top 3 competitors right now would be Ninebot one z10 Gotway MSX super Kingsong 18XL American companies can do it better! 🇺🇸
I have an XR and a pint and I love both! This app is an amazing way to make the best of of your rides. Battery percentage is key in electric transportation, and that can all be viewed from the app. My favorite part of the app is that you can change the ride style based on the terrain you're in or your skill level so it rides best suited for your needs. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to toggle between boards. That isn't clear to me. If anyone had an answer pls help. Happy floating!
App lacks a history and safety feedback is non existent
The app often tells me my last ride was 0 miles even though I haven’t turned it off after riding. It’s a bit clunky. A history that shows you all your previous rides with relevant stats would be nice. Also, as another user noted, the app and board don’t do a good job of telling you when you’re going too fast. I often don’t even notice the push back until all of a sudden I feel like I’m doing a manual on a skateboard at 20 mph.
Watch app could use some tweaks, but a great app all around
Great app. Well designed and easily navigable. Being able to share rides with other users is really neat and makes exploring new places easy. The app is a great mix of social and utility. The Apple Watch app is in its early stages, but would benefit greatly from a Complication for watch faces. Having battery/speed/profile information at a glance would be perfect. For now, opening the app on the watch is the only option to get that info on the go without riding with your phone in your hand.
I use the app to check the status of my Wheel while riding. Speed. Battery life. I was excited about the achievements. Literally rode 64 miles today (the most miles I’ve clocked in a day to the best of my knowledge) and found myself captain Morgan style with 3% battery a few feet from my driveway but the app never registered my mileage? It clocked that I rode 64 miles but never gave me credit for the achievement. Weak sauce. For what it is, it does just fine but my sore feet, tired legs and stiff back would like to be recognized for their group effort today!
Basically, you gotta get this app, if you own the board. The main thing I wish was that the watch interface was easier to use. It’s very difficult to change ride modes from the watch. If I am riding in traffic, I try to keep my phone in my pocket, but you will be pulling it out and messing with it all the time - to customize your ride as you go, and the home screen is not optimized to read in a glance while on the move. The app interface could definitely be improved for on the go interactions. That said, it tells you all the geek stuff that you love to know about where you were and what you did, and is fun to look at after you put the board away: - Someone has actually logged 13K miles on their board?!? - That climb was only 200m? - Hmmm, I thought I was going faster than that.
Works fine for what it is. Improvements can be made.
The app does what it’s supposed to do. Mostly. It still isn’t great about automatically recording rides. Even though I have the threshold set to Zero, it still seems like it takes about a quarter mile to start recording. The Apple Watch (or whichever watch you wear) should have an option to start/stop ride recording. I feel like the app should also give the rider an option to dim the status bar on the board, either through direct user control, by detecting environmental light through the rider’s phone, or just set brightness depending on the actual time of day. FutureMotion doesn’t promote Night Rides, but most users like to ride at night. Not being blinded by the status LEDs would be nice. (I’ve communicated these ideas to FutureMotion through the OneWheel website. We’ll see what happens.)
Added app features continue to be terrible and dismissive of community
Don’t update to whatever new version of the app FM releases. This latest one features auto ride recording. What about an expectation of privacy?! This shouldn’t be a feature. Bring back features and functionality that’s been released that’s been removed; stop screwing over the users of the community. Avoid the updated app if you want to use battery mods in the future, or see diagnostics that you currently see. FM is doing more and more to lock users out of their products that they don’t support well enough, and restricting users from using the way they want to.
I don’t know if you guys read these reviews but maybe you’ve never actually used the watch app on the Onewheel having a scroll down with a jog dial is really bad UI. what other watch apps if you want to get to another screen you swipe over look at Strava. with a jag dial your gloves or something else will constantly scroll down and put what your info out of view. No reason not to have speed /battery/trip concentric rings with east to view graphic and text. And a swipe over to switch modes…NOT a jog dial. Cmon this UI is years out of date.
The social network ability stuff like adding friends needs some work. Would be great for you guys to just knock on some social media people doors right in the silicon valley (down the street) to help you out with the social/groups/friends stuff. The mapping ride feature is awesome and the leaderboards are fun competition but would be better if I was able to find my friends and compete with them. Talk to Elon possibly? Let’s make this the Tesla app of skateboards!
This app is sending marketing push notification spam that violates the App Store ToS they agreed to follow. Previous review follows: Usually companion apps that come with gadgets are a clunky afterthought, but that is not the case here! Connections to both the phone and the watch seem quite reliable to me, the functionality and interface are not too much and not too little. It’s clear that the makers are also passionate users. One nit: I wish the watch app established a “session” or whatever it’s called while connected to the board so that my watch doesn’t auto close to the home screen.
App worked great for one plus, upgraded to gt which works fine but is unable to connect to the app. Even after forgetting and removing the former board from the app history I still get hit with the same activation failed retry later or with steady internet connection, the app presents this even with good WiFi connection. Not sure if this is a app problem or board problem, board works fine just can’t change anything in the menu like lights, mapping settings, battery percentage, just a bummer that I can’t use the new shaping settings.
The Onewheel app is very good and allows you to see your speed mileage and battery and many other features. Even though I gave this app five stars there’s one thing that I think should be in the next update. There is no custom shaping for the one wheel pint only for the XR. This is not a major problem but I think it would greatly increase many views of the app. Overall Onewheel is a great company, they make an awesome board and design a great app
Is there any chance you guys could install a custom shaping firmware update on the Onewheel pint/pint x or is the Onewheel pint not capable of that firmware. If it’s not possible it’s completely fine I just thought that if you couldn't afford or get your hands on a GT or newer model then you could get more options on the pint/ pintx. Anyways thanks for the awesome experience and creating an awesome product!
My only complaint about the app is that there is no way to set a max speed. I literally should be able to type in (or move a slider) to tell the onewheel to not exceed my desired speed. I know some people want to go as fast as they can on these things but that’s not me... I know there’s a “pushback” feature but that’s not what I’m asking for. Why else would you want this feature? Well, if you have kids (I do) and you want them to ride but not be able to do 20+ miles an hour.... just saying...
I think this should be a must have on the app as one would be able to c the limits pushed and have that as a breaking point for someone to not cross, I had a bad nosedive at around 50 miles and without warning and broke two ribs, I bought this board all knowing the warnings but to have a duty cycle in the app to have a visual warning would be much safer for all the riders of any age. Thx Tim
As of a couple days ago, the app started closing/crashing randomly when it’s in the background. Often I pull my phone out to check battery or ride recording in the middle of a ride, and the app reopens, reconnects to the board, and (sometimes) restarts my ride recording. I am losing ride data, battery warnings, etc. without even knowing it. Also, ride recording usually doesn’t track me again unless I come to a full stop and wait for a while. This never happened in the last 9 months/4,000 miles since I got my board - just started days ago and happens CONSTANTLY.
I got the app to know my battery level and to see the miles I’ll hit, but there is much more then that. You can customize shaping, know your top speed, leaderboards, and achievements you have done. I also especially love the group ride feature and to be able to ride with massive groups and meet new friends. Love the app and can’t wait for new updates in the future.
So far I’ve had a great time with this app and my board. But sometimes when it’s recording my ride, it’ll skip sections and I’ll have a straight line from one spot to another. It’ll cross lines where roads don’t exist. The other issue I’m currently running into is that I can’t view my ride history. I don’t want to uninstall the app for fear of breaking my daily streak but I also want to be able to see my ride history so I can go on rides on paths I’ve taken before.
Everything works fine, never had any connectivity issues. I would like to have it connect automatically even if my phone is not unlocked, having to be able to leave phone at home and link my onewheel to my apple watch and have it record the run and then sync with phone later.
The app is fine. The only issue I have with it is there doesn’t seem to be an efficient way to toggle between multiple onewheels. I have both the XR and the Pint. When I’m not riding them, I let my kids ride them. And they always want to know how fast they’re going. So I connect to one of them, and look at the stats. Then when I want to see the mph on the other Onewheel, I have to close the app, and go back into it to connect to the other Onewheel. It’s quite an inconvenience.
I’m pretty sure this is a new problem..? Basically latest version took my phone battery from 85% to 15% in like 2 hours. Moreover when I got home and plugged into my 2.4A charger, the app was sucking so much juice (confirmed in battery applet in settings app had used 91% of the battery power in the previous hour) that even an hour later the phone only had added 5%. Was only fixed by restarting phone.
Can you imagine buying a Tesla, then at some point Elmo decides he wants to force a new update to all cars with useless features that customers don’t want or need. Customer starts the car and display says “Sorry, you need to update the software before I can let you see the speedometer”. That’s exactly what Future Motion is doing to its customers w/ this latest update. I shrug at the thought of when a time comes when FM goes at of business and the app just simply stops working altogether (no response from calling “home”)…
Apps is amazing definitely see the constant progression through each iteration of the app. Would love to see a feature that allows the safety beep come through your headphones. That way if your jamming to your favorite tunes you don’t risk not hearing the safety beep as it will play through the head phone via the app.
App takes long time to connect to the onewheel board, after connecting once i put away my phone i don’t know if it’s connected or not. When listening to my airpods and using my apple watch to look for the battery it says i need to connect again making the app really useless. I saw some comments saying it could be the board, but how do i know what the issue is? do i need to open the app every time i want to ride or just opening one time it will connect each time i ride? If the board is bad what i need to do to get this fix, how to o know it’s the app or the board etc.
With the latest update, so many useful statistics have been removed, most notably (in my opinion) the battery voltage level. The Onewheel app does not report on actual battery pack voltage, but rather the amount of energy used, which is why it‘s so hard to get an accurate guess of how much range you have left - is my battery going to die at 30% or will I be able to go all they way to 0%? This is just one more step Future Motion is taking to reduce usefulness to the user and make the Onewheel "a magic black box" that shouldn‘t be upgraded or repaired.
Since everyone wants to ride my onewheel, it sure would be a nice feature to be able to lock it down and prevent it from being used without punching in a passcode. For instance, in a group setting at the park, everyone’s kid wants to get on it. If I look away for a few minutes, a kid can hit the button and take off, most likely without a helmet on. Please consider adding this. Love the onewheel!!!!
I love the onewheel and the app is cool to change riding modes etc. The best feature is being able to monitor my speed on my watch. I can’t always feel pushback and checking my speed on my wrist keeps me in the safe zone. I wish the OW would connect to my watch directly without the phone. I would give 5 stars if that feature were possible. Maybe it’s not possible. Otherwise great app for a great product.
I’ve had my Onewheel XR for a week now and love it! The app is surprisingly good. A few suggestions: The Apple watch app is useful! But speed is too tiny. I’d like to be able to read at a glance like a car’s speedometer. That’s more urgent than battery level. The estimated range varies too wildly to be useful when I’m on hills. Feeling pushback is subtle and I’ve had a few scary nose dives. It would be helpful to have more pushback warning like a beep and haptic feedback from phone and watch. Or when I exceed a certain speed or motor load. The wheel slip notification seems entirely useless. Does the “riding goofy” setting actually do anything?
This app is amazing. It’s very easy to use. Necessary to change the riding styles. This enhances the experience of the OneWheel Plus so much! I wish they had an Apple Watch companion app that can stand alone without the iPhone. Specially when riding off road, I don’t want to have my phone with me in case it gets damaged. Otherwise great app! Looking forward to future updates!
I would love to see a password for the pint to stop people from turning it on and hurting themselves. Some type of button press password would be cool or being able to unlock it from your phone. An alarm on the next Onewheel would be good too. I have 117 miles on my pint and have been loving every second keep up the good work.
Besides fb groups. I would like a feature to be added to the app where you can click on someone’s public posted ride. And leave a message. Like as in “it’s a nice day out wanna ride? “ or daily local challenges from rider to rider. I see we have personal goals.
