Purity - Porn Block Browser

I have long said “If only there was a text-only browser for mobile!” Well, here it is. It gives you a black- and white-list option, as well as the option to add the email of an accountability partner, and a 4-digit pin to lock the settings. It does not take screenshots of your phone, but analyzes the text of your search words and of the web pages for risky/dangerous behavior. And it works. Sometimes a little too well- for example, it will block some Intuit pages because they include the phrase “yandex”. But by and large I can get done what I need done. Thankful to these folks for enabling me to have access to the internet for research and work, without the temptation of porn, or even of reading sensual stories. To Purity - thank you. Please don’t cave to the inevitable pressure of users who say “this would be perfect, if only we could also do X, Y, or Z”. The world needs a barebones text-based browser just like Purity is now. I get that some changes might be good, but you have a simple app that works. More complexity lends itself to more bugs and issues. To other users - this app works really well in tandem with the Screen Time restrictions on iPhones, if you want to really dial in safety on your phone. Set your safety settings in Purity and Screen Time, then have a trusted friend/accountability partner set the 4-digit pins for both Purity and Screen Time. 3 cheers to helping make the internet a safer place.

This app is great for resisting temptation, it will block URLs that you blacklist and any specific words you want blacklisted in URLs. It is in Google Safe Search by default and is great for blocking very specific sites or searches in specific sites. This is great and has been very helpful. The positives sadly stop there. This browser is slow and very clunky, taking a considerable amount of time to load web pages even on a newer phone with great connection. The main issue though, is that if you have a specific URL blacklisted, it will block that URL even if it is a back link somewhere on the page. For example, if I have Twitter blocked, it will load a web page until it realizes there is a link for a company’s Twitter account somewhere on the page, then it will send an alert and stop loading the page. This app and its blocking algorithm does not take into account URLs that are linked to a web page, it just sees them and automatically blocks the page. You can imagine how frustrating it is to try and load a web page but it is blocked because the author has a link to their social media at the bottom of the page. Although this app will help you fight temptation and that is the ultimate goal, it is slow, filled with errors like the example given above, and poorly optimized. I am actively looking for a replacement because of these issues.

This is the best app of its kind that I have tried (and I’ve used several). Every other filter has loopholes or blind spots of some kind, but Purity’s zero image option is as close to perfect as you can get. The gift of peace of mind is priceless. Thank you to the devs, this is a game changing app! Couple suggestions though - figure out a way to load captchas and buttons? Can be a bit of an issue, especially since these often occur on important sites (finance, jobs, etc). Also, rather than just cutting out pictures, replace them with a stock frame or logo or something of same dimensions. This would solve major formatting problems that appear and maybe cut out unnecessary blocking of some sites that load external images.

Purity takes a more measured approach managing Web usage and avoiding pornography than many of its competitors. There’s no VPN to bog down speed or interfere with the working of other apps. The browser is nimble, thanks to its DuckDuckGo core. Blocking is surprisingly effective. If you do encounter gaps in coverage or need to whitelist some blocked sites, you can contact their customer support to make adjustments. The subscription price is competitive. My only complaint is that I can’t find a Mac version for my laptop.

This app is great for the way it also blocks specific words, as well as, websites. It is cheaper than most porn blocking apps. The one things that becomes a little irritating is I am unable to return to the page before hand. (Ex. I read sports news. When I am on one page reading, finish the article, and go to hit the return button, it won’t load back to where all the other news is. It reloads the page I’m on. I it find irritating because then I have to go search the sports news all over again each time). I’m not sure if this is a bug or if it is built that way, that would be my recommendation of fixing. As a whole, this is a quality app and I recommend it.

I think overall this is a reall good browser with a affordable price as well, my only critique of it is that seems to block sites that have absolutely nothing to do with pornography. For example I tried to access a website to look at my 401k and that was blocked or just trying to put in a job application and it was blocked. It ends up making me go back to regular browsers just to get some simple tasks done. I might come back to the app one day but for now I’ll take a break from it.

I like this app both because I can use it to block pornography but also because I can use it to reduce phone stimulation in general! It has been great to change my phone's default browser to Purity and not feel such an urge to visit old safari bookmarks or google image search random things. So helpful, and the customer service is great. Seem like a wonderful crew of people and I am happy to support them!

Great app and a great alternative to covenant eyes, make use of the accountability and add someone you trust, so that you are not alone. No matter how strong you think you are, anyone can fall. If you are a Christian, we are commanded to not make provision for the flesh and its lusts, if we keep open lanes to immorality and are not accountable to others, we may drift easily and fall into sin, hardening our hearts at each indulgence through the deceitfulness of sin. By Gods grace may we walk in purity.

I was literally asking Jesus for some resources that would help me because every time I go on the internet it never fails something inappropriate pops ups 😂 and I’m like😀. But this app is really great to avoid things like that and more. I really like the bad word feature super effective 😁. These seem like genuine people who care about your protection. Had this for a few weeks and it’s been working well. Love that it doesn’t use VPNs. Also love how it shows you how to block Safari on your phone and add an accountability partner that can see if you search up or get into anything weird. It’s also a lot cheaper than the previous porn blocker I was using (which didn’t really work well). Thank you Purity for helping me!

The most economical and effective way to end your fight with pornography. Purity browser is not as well integrated with the iPhone’s OS as Safari is, but it is surprisingly good, and absolutely worth it for someone struggling with Safari as a constant temptation. At least give the app a try—you might find it’s been the tool you’ve been looking for.

the app works great but there are some things that make it sometimes unfunctional. Sometimes the whitelist option won’t work at all. for example. I could visit a website that is whitelisted but if there is a word such as xxx anywhere including the web address, the website will still be blocked regardless of whether the website is whitelisted or not.

When you download this app, it shows you how to disable, and block other apps that can get you in trouble. The app itself is phenomenal at blocking adult websites that you swore off for the 1 billionth time. It’s DuckDuckGo but with the guardrails up. At $5/mo or $50/year, it’s a cheap price when considering the cost of not having it

I found the app to be very promising, however the only complaint that I have is that when you want to no longer have an account, you are essentially stuck with it even after your three day trial is over. That is the only thing that really bothers me.

Amaizing app to help with my addiciton to adult content for 12+ years. Ive gone my longest streak thanks to this app and bought the yearly right after the trial because of how much change i have seen within myself without any temptations. ONLY ISSUE: I wish the app was more optimized as it does kill your battery when open. Other than that I am very thankful this browser exist.

I love this app. It helps me so much with avoiding porn on my phone but also just phone overstimulation in general, because I set it up to block all images (not just porn). It’s also just a really nice/pretty interface! Very pleasing to use! And the group that makes it is wonderful. No bothersome notifications or emails.

Finally an app that blocks content based on the words on a webpage. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. (Wish they had a desktop version that didn’t require the new M1 chip to use, lots of people still use previous gen computers that don’t have the new chips)

Works very smoothly and clearly - no slow down from VPN which many others have. I like the duck duck go core because that’s what I used before for privacy. Only used a short time but it’s been great so far.

So far, the app looks good. Please add features to customize your home page with an image or move your search bar to the bottom of the app, just like safari. The app is also a little glitchy on performance. Overall could be better.

I believe this app is a step in the right direction toward seeing your phone as a tool to be used for the glory of God. It takes sacrifice to utilize but the benefits outweigh the costs. Great app, works the way it should, cost effective, etc.

I’m fairly new to this app, but so far I’ve loved the application. It doesn’t use a VPN like other apps so things run smooth and don’t lag. It has great options for accountability and the support team is prompt.

This is literally the best internet filter I have ever encountered in my life….the very first one I found IN YEARS AND YEARS that actually BLOCKS PICTURES AND VIDEOS!!! I am almost in tears. Bless y’all. Please, please, make this same software available for PCs!!! 🙏🏾 (Like please)

I’m not lying when I say this you. You can literally check the App Store for “better alternatives” but you can never find a better alternative.

It’s not perfect but honestly the best one I’ve come across at least for my needs. Wish I found it sooner. Highly recommended!

I tried to cancel my subscription and it wont let me. Ever since I have gotten this app, it has messed both of our phone up. It did block both pictures and videos which was nice.

This is an effective simple app that isn’t bogged down with unnecessary features.

My pastor forgot the pin and almost a year later I can’t use 1/2 my phone. The problems came out of no where. Can’t join group chats, access my Apple ID, send photos or video. Is there a way for him to recover the pin? Someone please help, he isn’t tech savvy.

No content blocker is perfect— there’s almost always a workaround. We tend to find what we’re after if we look hard enough. Chances are, if you’ve been in the fight for years or decades now, you know plenty of terms and websites that may let you sneak past security. That being said, Purity does a great job at putting up tough borders. The option to whitelist/blacklist terms and sites is so welcome; having an accountability partner option is also welcome; being able to report pages, block pages as you come across them, block images and videos entirely, and more, make this an incredibly useful app for protecting your heart. So I can say pretty confidently that I would recommend this app. I also want to say to anyone reading this review that fighting temptation is an arduous process, and frequent victory over it may take a lot longer than you expected. You may find, as I have, that the issue goes deep, and you might have to cut out other things from your life beside just porn— other apps, websites, games, shows, movies, books... Things that may seem innocent enough, or innocuous, but tempt you to make the wrong choice. In the Bible, in Matthew 5:30, Jesus says that if your right hand causes you to sin you should cut it off. He doesn’t mean literally (or Christians all across the world would be distinguishable by how maimed they are!) but he’s using a very extreme kind of imagery and language to describe the severity of action needed to overcome a sinful lifestyle. He’s saying, “If that show you like leads you to desire porn, stop watching it. Get rid of it. Rip it up from the root. If that app or game makes you lust, delete it, prevent yourself from even having access to it. Whatever tempts you, cut it out like its a cancerous mass or it will eventually kill you.” This app will help you do that. It will help you be proactive in the fight, not just reactive. It is a handy tool in the task of uprooting bad habits in your life. And for those burdened by the guilt and shame that come with the struggle with porn, I say, “Lay that burden down at the cross of Jesus.” If we own our sin and admit our guilt, God will consistently and reliably forgive us of that sin and work in our hearts to purge those habits from our lives. (1 John 1:9) And He does that with joy, because Jesus paid the price for our guilt when he sacrificed himself in our place. God sees the finished work of Jesus— the atoning blood spilled to pay our debt and the blameless righteousness of the perfect Son— and He delights to take away your shame because you’ve been justified. To use this app is to lean into the change that God is already working in your heart, and will see to it’s end; it is to be that much more in step with living a guilt-free life.

Having this app has really helped with my purity. I deleted safari off my phone and closed my eyes and set a screen time code to stay committed to using this app.

I had high hopes for this tool; unfortunately, it is so sensitive, it bocks basically any page with suitably long, random text strings in the URL. It's essentially impossible to long into anything, from Azure to Google to Walmart.com. It flags and emails the AP endlessly, and whitelisting every website in the world is not practical. Some of the keywords it doesn't like seem absolutely random and devoid of meaning, as well. -- In short, great idea, bad implementation.

Really like to app but it could do with 2 better features 1. Sideways viewing, I don’t know how that isn’t already implemented but that would be a nice thing to add 2. Honestly my only complaint is that every time I open the app it always suggests opening the bookmark page and every time I have to hit the ‘cancel’ button, pretty annoying especially when in the YouTube website and I open back up, it has the video black, the bookmark page along the with url is highlighted so I am forced to close out the video and app because of the no sideways viewing it glitches the Purity app so it’s pretty frustrating having to deal with that Other than those 2 things its a really great app to use
