Hello team, I love your tool but the share sheet Roam Research uses fails to be reliable as I can’t tell whether I saved something or if it even opened because a “post” does not prompt long enough for input before vanishing, or leaving me with a perceptibly dimmed screen. Sometimes I can get the share function of a website or photo to work but hardly. Please look into this. Also there is some ancestry with the api or a linking in the backend with an app on iOS called “Hints”. If someone has this app downloaded the share sheet function or any usability it added is gone as it for some reason opens this app instead of Roam. Super odd but to replicate: 1. Have ios 15 or 16, iphone or iPad and have “Roam Research” app and “Hints” app both installed on the device 2. Attempt a share sheet prompt to Roam Research for something 3. Get prompt to open in “Hints” 4. Deleted “Hints” app and this issue goes away =/
External keyboard now works as expected; this is now a reasonable facsimile of the browser app and completely useable. A few more things of note: * it seems as though the editor uses Ctrl+↔️ to navigate to End- or Start-of-line - Mac convention is that Cmd+↔️ serves that function, so this is a little non-idiomatic * I couldn’t get Quick Capture to work on the iPad * On the i__Phone__, Quick Capture was frustrating since it would load a time-and-date-stamped note placeholder when you sent a note, but when you come back later to add a note, it still has the time you sent the last one as it’s timestamp with no clear way to fix it. * maybe this is just me? A feature request: * please add some shortcut integration points so we can write our own automations
I use Roam primarily on my iPad Pro in Safari but I use this app as my portable task list and notepad on my iphone i.e. when I’m mobile. Sure you lose some functionality but the app is mostly a convenience tool in it’s present state, and it does a good job of that. It was very inconvenient to access and use the web version on an iphone. Roam is not a perfect solution, but it’s what you make of it — you are the designer of your own system. People seem to *love* complaining about Roam, but you just need to find a way to make it work for you. Roam hasn’t let me down yet.
Got the latest update. The bottom tabs are all gone. I don’t know how to use this apps anymore. I’m a power user and looking forward to native mobile experience for so long. Over past few months, failed loading on the main graph, failure, extensive delay syncing of quick note. Really disappointed. I’m done with mobile app. Will use apple note for quick note and transfer to roam when I’m with the laptop or pc. Roam is my second brain and I have no word to this app experience. Honest feedback: clojuredart, SwiftUI, ReactNative, firebase are not important. It’s 2022, just get a mobile app working. The best tech disappear, especially true for tool for minds.
I was so excited to finally see a Roam app! It seems to be a good first attempt. I am, however, experiencing problems when using an external keyboard. When I press tab, I’m expecting it to indent the block I’m currently at. However, instead it cycles through to the bottom menu, which makes it impossible to indent normally with an external keyboard. Please fix this, and I would be happy to update my review with an improved rating.
Roam Research is the best tool for note taking. Ive been using it since 2020 and its been rock solid for me. The initial hype at its launch has waned considerably, but I still find it faster, easier, and more effective than its competitors. If you’re new or haven’t tried it in a while, I highly encourage you to give it a shot. The mobile app in particular has come out ahead big time.
I’m a big fan. This has changed my life so much and so much better than Notion or notes app. The biggest gripe I have is selecting a graph and entering my password each time I have to open my graph. If I have entered it once on my device, could it just take me to daily notes on my last used graph? It would make life so MUCH easier
The speed of page loads is frustratingly slow regardless of the size or type of data pages contain. It consistently saps productivity. Countless usability issues make authoring any form or length of writing cumbersome. Because of this, I now often first use a different application (such as Apple Notes, Google Docs, etc.) to perform the majority of my work; only after I create the bulk of the content I need to produce do I then transfer it into Roam. Roam has significant potential but it's squandered due to a lack of human-centered design and not meeting table-stake performance expectations.
Why is the mobile app restricted to what seems to be a quick capture now? I'm back to using the PWA, because I want all the features available from my phone. If the reason is a memory issue for some people, let others toggle the current view. I'd be glad to bump up my rating if this gets fixed. It's frustrating since the team feels out of touch with users after seeing this.
I’ve been on the edge of switching out of Roam due to lack of mobile/offline tools. Then this got released! Unfortunately, it’s lack of keyboard support makes it really frustrating. Trying to hang on for a bit longer, but in the middle of several projects and iPad is my main tool. Hope to see an update soon!
It’s getting better . A little buggy and slow but one thing I like is it’s the same as desktop -it isn’t stripped down version like almost all other apps in this area . But can we please add a widget for quick capture ? That way I could Just not open app and add note very quickly .
Roam in desktop is life changing. The mobile app is slow to load, cursor isn’t automatically activated, and the UI is uninspiring—looks too much like the desktop app. Does not have the native iOS feel to it. That said, a few things are good: tagging entires is easier than what we had before with the quick capture. Searching seems to work well.
Roam Research is a fantastic tool, but doesn’t integrate to the iPad Pro very well. Unlike the browser version, I can not use the Apple Pencil to hand write notes, which is a bit of a drawback when working in offline environments and relying on the App to track notes. Hopefully this is something that can be patched in eventually.
Keyboard support via universal control seems pretty broken, no key-repeat. An offline mode is also pretty critical I think. Mobile app is what I’ve really been waiting for to pay for a subscription, really hoping it continues to improve, because otherwise it’s a great tool!
Hey another external keyboard user. I’m also so happy to have a roam iOS app now but using roam and using my external keyboard are one in the same and now I can’t do this! Every delete command is met w exiting out of the typing state of the app instead of simply deleting the prior letter etc. PLEASE please please fix this soon :)
Not native experience I expect from iOS app. i was waiting for it long time, but it doesn’t work well as on mobile web and as mobile app. Sometimes can’t remove text input focus from a text field, loading times are high. Login with google goes through a web wrapper. Guys I’m with you with all my heart. I’m tech founder myself, I will change to 5 when you make better experience.
I appreciate the ability to add quick notes via my phone on the app. However, external keyboards do not seem to be supported on the iPad, where I intend to do a decent amount of work/entry. When I attempt to hit backspace, an internal app menu item is selected instead. Seems to be focused on use of virtual keyboard (i.e. iPhone).
Works on the share sheet maybe 25% of the time. Now it just doesn’t even show up as an option. Hard to understand how a notes app that costs $15 a month can’t put out a functioning iOS app when every free one at least can do that. Like how is this not the ultimate priority? It’s 2023!
I installed the app and created an account but the app is not useable. I get the message below there is no link to website etc. I do not understand how Apple approved an app that is not complete. “Before using the mobile application, create a graph on the desktop or web app. You can also sign out and sign in to a different account.”
Enjoying using roam. I’m hopeful it’s a great solution for me and my love for note taking but struggle to keep things organized. I’d love it if I could have multiple windows of roam open on my iPad. Please add support for this!
it was completely dope, and i had very few complaints. After the last update, now i just get logged out all the time, super annoying. "logging in with google" doesn't work - brings me back to login screen with nothing filled out.
Roam is a great product but this app is unusable. I literally can’t even search my notes or make quick entries on this. Interface is beyond confusing and cumbersome. I recommend re-evaluating what users are trying to do and building a better interface for a mobile environment.
Apparently it’s too large. I was able to use the app before, but even then it was very slow. I just use phone to note instead of quick capture and have given up on being able to reference my information on the go.
Similar to another reviewer, I have also been having problems with my external keyboard. I am unable to use my delete or arrow keys, which makes the app unusable. Was really looking forward to being able to use the app, but disappointed with the results.
I don’t get it. Logged in but it doesn’t show my graphs. Middle button at the bottom does nothing. Quick capture button shows me a moving logo, and does nothing. Can’t even find a page to log out then back in.
The Roam team are the pioneers of the PKM. I've replacement countless tools for Roam. It truly is my canvas for thinking. Stoked that I can finally interact with it on the go.
All I can do is quick capture. I cannot access anything else, it’s basically worthless. I’m only wrote 2 stars because I love so much the main Roam Research, but this app…it’s a nightmare.
Bottom bar has disappeared in the latest update, trapping me in quick capture mode only. I don’t use quick capture mode, so the app is unusable for me now. Was working well while it lasted.
This is a very anticipated app for Roam Research. Sadly, this build seems very iPhone centric with iPad + keyboard being left behind. Basic physical keyboard functions such as delete and arrow keys are broken. Hopefully an update to address this is in the works.
The memory management, the search, there’s so much about this app that’s barely better than nothing. Months after release, it’s obviously not a priority
Really disappointed in this app. CRITICAL keys, like the delete button (seriously) and the tab button do not work with an iPad & external keyboard, rendering it completely useless. If the intention was to make an app just for iPhones, it seems ok, otherwise it’s a no go.
The desktop version is fantastic but the iPhone app is unusable. It’s impossible to type continuously without the UI bugging out, and this has been left unfixed for several years.
Big fan of roam and so happy to finally have an app after all these years. Needs a ton of UX work to actually make this a mobile first experience. Nav is bizarre. Use more gestures.
Share sheet is non-functional. Only way to add a link to text is by typing out the mardown link syntax. Slow to release upgrades, poor comma with paying customers.
“Roam wasn't built in a day, and we've got an error. Your graph is too large, try opening another graph.” So the only feature is a better way to Quick Capture.
I had been waiting for this, but the app is unusable if I can’t use my external keyboard on my iPad Pro. I still have to go to the website in order to use Roam.
