Our chorus director recommended this app, so I’m sure it’s just what my son needs and that’s why I gave it three stars rather than 1. While this may be a great app, there’s no way to create an account in the app! For devices that have Safari disabled for the protection of our kids, setting up an account becomes rather inconvenient. It’s not a deal breaker, but most apps that need an account have a way to do that in app. It’s pretty odd that there’s not even a link to do that. I’ll be trying another app rather than trying to figure out where to go online to create an account.
Update: The developers of this app are INCREDIBLY responsive. In just 2 days of my original review (see below) the developers had released an update that mostly fixed the issue. It’s still not quite as automatic as it used to be which is why I’m giving it 4 stars, but it’s useable again! I LOVE this app and it’s ability to hone in on specific rhythmic and pitch skills. I use it with my students ALL the time. Original Review: First off I would like to say that the ideas behind this app are incredible and it should be a five star app(ORIGINAL RATING OF 2 STARS). I have been a user for years and have been very happy for years. This is unfortunately negated by the viewing issues that were created in the last major update. Previous version of the app automatically zoomed, and resized to make the music fit the best in the available viewing area. The current version relies instead on pinch to zoom, but the app controls are also included in the zoom field so on an iPad it’s very easy to zoom in to the point that you don’t have access to the controls (such as the next button). Please restore the previous viewing/zooming defaults so that it properly displays on whatever screen is being used. Pinch to zoom being essentially required to be used make the app unusable.
This app is AWESOME! Just what I was looking for. Fully customizable for many instrument types, rhythms, intervals, etc. All custom settings can be saved for quick future use. Yes, you need to pay a yearly subscription fee from their website. But it’s totally worth the price! After setting up your melody parameters all it takes is a single tap to generate a whole new melody! You can do this over and over again. Just tap once and boom! A new melody. This is perfect for sight reading practice. And if you think about it, the yearly fee is a lot cheaper than constantly buying new music for practice.
I will say that this app is pretty amazing! It absolutely helps me out when it comes to reading music and If I could, I would have told my Jr. High teacher to use Sight Reading Factory. However, there is one big thing that bugs me. On the website once you finish a recording in an assignment, you’re given the option to review your recording, that way you can be sure to get a perfect score. On the app there is no way to review your work to make sure you say the right notes, stay on beat, etc. For this reason I mostly gravitate towards the website rather than the app. If this issue could be fixed it would be a world of help!
I’m giving this app three stars because it doesn’t have any fun things like Duolingo when you know you get achievements and then you can buy things and you have a lot of fun learning but this one has nothing of that and you can only choose one time signature or random and multi select doesn’t work but also major F for BF trumpet sounds just like major C and this one doesn’t have any in the tempo. The only tempo that you can choose is 112 BPM (beats per minute) and I would like it if you could choose the tempo for the practice.
Our choir director also recommended this so our sight reading would be superior. From my perspective on things this is a really good app to practice on with all the options you can choose for different type of musicians.
I use this almost everyday for 40 minutes and I can already tell the improvement but the biggest con is that it doesn’t have some sort of feature where you can record yourself doing it to a metronome before listening to the answer. Sometimes I find myself hesitating and reacting after the rhythm or note is played but I think it would be better to really know if you have it down. I try to do it before to see if I got it but when I listen back it’s easy to forget what I did.
This is a great source for unlimited sight-reading exercises FOR ANY VOICE OR INSTRUMENT! You can read through the reviews like I did and realize that 99% of people who gave this a bad rating was because they didn’t realize you need to purchase an annual subscription. To those people whom assume that everything in life is free, I recommend reading books and observe successful people such Benjamin Franklin, who once said that “an investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
Reasonably good for a beginner, not well suited for advanced
if you are serious about learning to cite read for the piano, this is not the app for you. There is no convenient way to set the range of notes that the app will use in the exercise as it presents. Do you have the option of either setting it for a different instrument than piano, or setting it for a different key, or both, but in no case will it give you exercises suitable for learning notes above and below the staff. This is probably less of a problem for instruments other than piano.
Hi! I’m a 7th grade band student, and I play the flute. We use sight reading factory all the time. It’s great for getting better at our technique and skill. It’s also super fun just to test yourself and see how good you are at your instrument. If you don’t use it in your choir or band I would suggest mentioning it to your director because it benefits all of the members in your band or choir. I hope you consider getting this app
Great for sight reading- very difficult after level 4
This app generates different sight reading patterns/ pieces on demand and you can customize a lot of things (number of measures, annotations, key, tempo, etc.) which is great, but… from level 4 to level 5 the difficulty changes drastically and there is no fingering annotations (it’s not a 5 finger position anymore). If I knew how to quickly figure out the fingering as I sight read, I don’t even think I’d be using this app. Either make an extra level between 4/5 that helps with fingering in a non 5 finger piece, pr add the annotations and let the user activate/deactivate as desired. I’ll change my review when/if that ever happens. Before using this app I couldn’t even sight read a level one piece and it helped me tons, but now I am stuck on level 5.
App won’t let you log in, after over an hour trying to figure that out made an account on their webpage (not easy to find there either!) and it won’t even give a 7 day trial to test. So you can’t use this app at all unless you want to do serious Google research to create an account and then they require pay upfront- I can’t even log in, why on earth would I commit to an expensive subscription for something that doesn’tappear to work?!? Seems like great concept, I wish it worked
This is a fantastic product/service. The features and flexibility — impressive. For those who review this poorly because you didn’t get instant gratification or something for nothing, I have zero sympathy. How hard is it to actually go to a website or dig a little deeper, and then maybe pay for something of quality? With a tiny investment of time (a minute or two to register) and money, you will have tools that cost a fraction of what you’d be paying for this aspect of lessons, and can save you many, many hours down the line.
The most attractive feature of the app is its ability to generate new melodies at customizable levels. People who give it poor ratings have done so because the app costs money or they are having difficulty with logging in.
Don’t waste your time and money on this software. They have removed most menu options and the ability to configure meaningful exercises. If there are menus they must be hidden. I just renewed my subscription after about 2 years and the application is unusable. No phone support at all, just emails. I think all company support is focused on schools and institutions. Now, if I can get in touch with a customer service rep to get a refund.
Choir student here. I decided to get this app to try and learn different voice parts on this(you know, alto, tenor, bass, etc), but I had problems trying to log in and all that. I tried multiple times signing in through my Google account, but it wouldn’t let me do that. On top of that, I didn’t wanna have to have a subscription for this.
Before rating this app negatively, go to their website to understand what it’s for. This is not a free subscription. The app is only for the convenience of subscribers who have an iOS device.
Many instruments, voice, and ensembles available. Great for assessing students if you are a music educator. Customizable, too. Have seen drastic improvement with my students.
I want to like this app, but the musical staff renders very small, at the extreme top of the screen, on iPad Pro 12”. I was advised by support to zoom in with a pinch gesture, which would probably work, but this is not the experience I was expecting from a paid service.
I am a student that is learning Clarinet in band, this app has everything, my teacher can do many things in the app, it is very easy for me, this is a very good app
I Can’t Think of a Better Way to Practice Sightreading!
I’m pursuing a master’s degree in collaborative piano, and this app really helps sharpen my sightreading skills! This is literally one of my favorite apps ever.
Hi dear developer I just downloaded this app from apple store I can not open your app ( it stops on the level of singing in) As I can not pass the process of signing in The app os constantly on the loop is asking me to sign in and then it redirects me to my email Then from there I try to change password and again it’s not giving me the pass What should I do ? Help me please
I had to submit an assignment on this app. I played the piece when the timer started and stopped playing when the timer ended. The app did not record any sound, I had my volume on max and my ringer on. I tried multiple devices. Thanks to SRF I got a 0 on my assignment. Would not recommend for school.
Why does the app description say that teachers can use it to organize their students, create classes and assignments when you can’t? As a teacher, when you click on assignments it says the feature isn’t available and to go to the website.
When my teacher put us on this platform, it was ruining my band experience. There is nothing appealing about random notes and kids raging over stressing out. Sight reading factory, please do something about this. Overall, the app is very confusing when you want to find your way around.
With a passion in my heart i warn you DO NOT MAKE ANYONE USE THIS. i am a student and i can promise you i have never had good thing come to me through this. a lot of times it buggy and i can't find where i need to go. just don't use this actually teach your students.
It’s a very good app to use to improve sight reading and I have a lot but recently been trying to practice on the sight reading and the app has bean crashing right after I confirmed my configuration
it’s so annoying. when i listen back, usually half of what i sang was cut out. and this gets graded, so when i have to keep doing it and i have a limited amount of tried i want to kms. oh also to the people who say you can’t use it, oof you have to pay or have a teacher pay for you. you shouldn’t rate this app terribly because it’s money and you can’t get it. you also shouldn’t say it’s a horrid app if you never even bought it. it doesn’t make sense, lol.
This app is the worst and don’t bother with the website. It doesn’t help whatsoever and is very very bad. It won’t even let you play the same thing again after one try even if it say try’s are unlimited. Trust me I’m helping you!
Would be great if I could enlarge the notes. As is I cannot use this in my classroom as I had hoped. The kids cannot read the notes because when they’re projected on the board they are tiny. Disappointed.
I purchased the annual subscription, created the account, only to find there is only ONE tempo for practice, 117 bpm. That’s fine if all your music is at that tempo. I would like to learn at differing speeds.
I have been mean and have written bad things about this app. I spoke badly of the app when it wasn't the apps shortcomings that I was entirely mad about. It has been helpful for me, and I would recommend for any instrument or singers for sight reading help. I'm sorry to the developers for my bad reviews.
You down load this app the. It wants your log in info that you have not set up yet. It gives no option to create and account. Deleted the app immediately.
I had this app because I needed it for school, so I just used a separate app to get in, but now, since I don’t have an account, I can’t get in and it won’t let me make one.
Sight Reading Factory makes practicing the important skill of sight reading quick, easy, effective and fun! This app composes music instantly and on-demand, providing musicians with a virtually unlimited supply of sight reading material. There are multiple levels of difficulty and the exercises can even be customized exactly to the needs of the musician. Sight Reading Factory is very versatile and can be used by musicians of all ages and abilities including music educators, music students, casual musicians and even professional musicians. Sight reading exercises can be generated for piano, guitar, voice, woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion and even full ensembles. Teachers and students can also use the built-in classroom management and assignments feature for assessment. Teachers can organize students into classes/groups and create assignments for them. Students complete assignments by generating a sight reading exercise and recording themselves performing the exercise. The assignment can then be submitted back to the teacher to grade and leave feedback.
