I've used many drone apps. This one is pretty smooth and reliable for what it does. It's missing a couple of key subtle touches that would really take it up a notch such as: showing the number of GPS satellites connected on the flight screen, not starting every flight in auto record mode (media controls are okay, but not fully clear in app), and more. If not done, would be good to bench mark the parrot and dji app and get deeper user input. I want the American made drone app to be as world class as the drone itself. And what's up with the crazy storage usage on my phone? I'm at 4gb, and find others online with the same problem, but cannot find any media stored on my device, and no option to explore and clean this up when a drone isn't connected. Let my memory go!
Have 15gb of storage in the app and no option to clear cache or anything. Don’t know where all the space is being taken up. Otherwise love the app and the drone.
For anyone planning on buying this drone be very cautious. Skydio promotes this drone has being exceptional and tracking and avoiding objects. I can tell you from experience and two skydio crashes thats this drone is garbage. The only way this drone works properly is in a super wide open field and with very bright lighting. Camera quality is not very good and the drone loses connection every second. While regaining connection you have absolutely no control of the drone, do there is no way of you stopping the drone from hitting a branch a powerline. DJI had been out for way longer and believe their drones are way better and actually cheaper. The skydio is $1000 just the drone. With all the accessories you are easily looking at $1600 to $1700 for the basic package. There are lots of drones out there that are less expensive and do a better job than the skydio.
The way the opposite of, if I would like to preview a video, the Skydio app saves it locally. Then, if I’d like to access that video when I’m not connected to the drone, from Photos for example, I cannot. The video files are saved in a private directories so that I can preview them. If I try to save them locally on my phone, it takes quite a bit of time to save each clip. Why not allow users to either access the local videos from the photos app directly, or copy them from the Skydio app directories to photos quickly. Exporting new clips, takes too long.
The Skydio 2 is amazing, super easy to fly and a lot of fun (just made sure you have a fast enough SD card - their website tells you what it needs). We had a lot of frustration before the first flight trying and failing to update over WiFi, but then found how to force cellular updates and it worked perfectly. Just go to Info (bottom of the screen) -> Settings -> Cellular Updates -> Always.
App is great to use until my beacon and controller get here. Was able to track my dog and daughter through our heavily wooded property and get some fantastic footage. One tip, I had to format my micro-sd card on my pc before the format option in the program would work, it kept getting to format complete and the telling me it needed to be formatted. So I just popped it in my pc did a FAT32 format, ran the format in the drone again and it worked perfectly!
Very intuitive flying. App is easy to use and connect to drone wifi well. When i use the beacon, with beacon connected to drone wifi, the phone app wants to connect to beacon wifi as it should. It’s easy to hand launch and catch the drone with the app. Flying control is acceptable, certainly not as good as controller, but sufficient to set up shots and tracking. Nice job Skydio.
It only took a week or so from when I got my Skydio 2 to when they updated the app with telemetry data I was wanting. With these kinds of improvements I’m glad to be supporting this awesome tech company. I’m having a blast flying my drone and can’t wait for more updates and feature improvements! Keep it up!
We bought 2 Skydio2+ on recommendation from DroneDeploy. They have been nothing but problematic for the 8 months we have had them. The constant disconnection issues, inability to pair the cheap, flimsy, finicky and gimmicky controller to the drone and constant inability to use in both DroneDeploy and the native app. You have to try for 5-10 minutes each time before a flight to pair the phone and or controller to the drone and then it ends up disconnecting mid flight. Save your hard earned money and buy a drone that actually works and has the customer support that actually helps the customer. The controller is such a joke too, cheaply made but they charge $180 for it. I fixed your slogan too: ‘Skydio 2+ Fly like never before…. If it works’ Don’t buy these drones. Nothing but expensive paperweights.
Drone is great and it had been working fine, but now I cannot create a clip from the footage I just captured. I can set the start point, and set the endpoint, but cannot click next to create the video. The problem is that the blue NEXT button stays illuminated for about half of a second and then it’s grayed out, so I cannot click it.
Initial screen launches in portrait mode, even if my phone is already installed in the controller and landscape is unlocked. App blindly consumes phone’s storage without any kind of rotation or options to set a quote for that or disable a video recording on the phone at all. Video settings of HDR, Manual Record are NOT being saved between sessions, very annoying.
I appreciate that they have given us telemetry and made other general improvements. However the app has now grown to 7GB of space on my phone, which is very strange. The app currently doesn’t seem to store media/video files, so I’m not sure why it’s having this issue or how to fix it.
This aircraft and the app are amazing. I fly UAS full time for an engineering firm and got this to experiment with myself and this system is so far ahead of its time that it is almost difficult to get used to. Absolutely amazing, great work.
Skydio does not work with iPhone 15 Pro. And the user experience is terrible. Not only does it refuse to establish communications between the drone and the iPhone, every time you attempt to get it to work you have to re-enter Wi-Fi information. This is ridiculous. I’d rather have my data stolen by China than use this American-made monstrosity.
Guys, you finally addressed every single concern I had with these units. The ability to control the landing do an override is great. The case landing feature is awesome. Great job!!
Why is this app use only portrait mode. I rarely use this mode. I would prefer to use it in landscape mode so I do not have to switch back and forth if I am using my keyboard that is built into the iPad cover.
Since the drone does so much, the app can be simpler than DJI
While simple is good, there are several features that need to be added to make this a really useful app. First, we need telemetry data (it was announced before Christmas but I’ve still not seen the update). For aerial photography it would also be nice to have some additional tools like rule if thirds bars, and even center reticle, and quick camera controls on the same screen that don’t require multiple menus. Also curve based gimbal and controller modifications to allow for more nuanced and cinematic movements. There needs to be some indication of GPS strength and confirmation of a good position lock for the take off point so if the drone needs to return to home, we can be confident it will come back to the right spot. And finally, the messages are not clear when connected to the controller and you loose connection. It seems to have you try and reconnect (why doesn’t it automatically do this) and it looks like it then tries to join the drone’s WiFi instead of the controller connection, but it is kind of confusing and usually too much to focus on when you are suddenly trying to figure out what’s going on and regain control and I just end up mashing whatever button it presents to me and hope it works. Overall, this is a decent app and works well in conjunction with the autonomy aspects of the Skydio. It will probably seem too basic for DJI pilots at first, but this isn’t the same kind of drone and doesn’t bolt on features like DJI (see how many different obstacle avoidance settings are there on a Mavic?). Instead, they just make everything work for the most part so you don’t need to micromanage the drone. Skydio - an awesome bonus feature would be to add an option to slow the drone down if necessary and then allow the user to shrink the protective bubble around the drone to enable indoor movement or navigation thru tighter spots. Kind of like the switch to turn off the height floor now.
Designed to be your personal film crew, Skydio 2+ captures stunning 4K60 HDR content, follows subjects, and avoids obstacles to create previously impossible shots. Launch, fly, land, and export all in the Skydio app. Connect a Skydio 2+ Beacon for easy, one-handed control at greater distances, or use a Controller for high-precision, stress-free manual control with the most advanced obstacle avoidance system ever developed. Skydio app is compatible with Skydio 2+ and Skydio 2. Skydio is an American robotics company designing, manufacturing, and supporting products in Redwood City, California.
