Been using Strongbox Pro for about a year now. Main reason I chose it is because it allows self hosting the password database on your own hardware. With Strongbox you can, of course, host your passwords in the cloud if you like. After Lastpass was hacked I moved to Strongbox. Never again will I store passwords in the cloud. The import feature works well and made the transition fairly easy from Lastpass. I self host on a Raspberry Pi on my home network. Strongbox syncs the database between all of my devices including my wife’s devices. It allows offline access to your passwords when you’re on the road. It syncs changes and resolves conflicts you or your wife might make in offline mode when you get back on your home network. The developer is responsive. I asked a lot of questions on Reddit before making the switch. He answered all of my questions quickly and clearly. I learned a lot from his responses. Strongbox has worked flawlessly. I highly recommended it.
I was a longtime user of 1Password, and really depended on its functionality. I was not happy, though, when they decided to prevent the use of local vaults and then moved onto a non-native client for Mac. Since I was a heavy 1Password user, storing attachments and using custom fields, I thought the move to a different password manager was going to be difficult. I was wrong, the transition to Strongbox was incredibly easy. The UI is excellent, and the migration from 1Password to Strongbox was seamless. I waited to write this review until I had some time to use Strongbox. Its been several months now, and I am extremely happy I made the decision to switch to Strongbox. The only feature that is really missing, is plugins for other browsers. That is not an issue for me since the app is so easy to use, has a great UI, and offers password autofill using the native api, like the built in Mac password manager uses. I have tested the complex Strongbox password databases I have on Windows, with KeePassXC, and it works perfectly. I am thrilled that Strongbox offers such a great experience, using an open source cross-platform database format, and allowing me to keep my data under my control - but still very accessible. Thank you Strongbox team for such a great experience!
I've been using password managers before there were password managers and we had to write our own. I've tried and used several commercial products for year. Most lacked the features I desired to maximize security and/or were coded offshore. I used to beg for features like local vaults, wifi-syn, customized fields, entry counts, last update records, password history and UI improvments to make the utility fast and easy enough so that the trade off between inconvenience and security was minimized. Strongbox is way out ahead of me with even more advanced features and constant refinments in usabilty that make using the product an absolute joy. Strongbox on MacOS and iOS is so far ahead that whenever I come up with something else it's usually already there! Five Stars for product and Five Stars for support.
So much to love from this app. Touch ID compatible, auto fill compatible, diceware password generation, iCloud storage, and a family plan! Also, the fav icon feature is just a nice perk. My husband and I use strongbox on Mac and iOS and thanks to iCloud support it is a breeze to ensure all our passwords are synced up across devices. If strongbox were available on windows I would use it there as well, but for now I am content to use KeePass2 to view the database. A polished product and well worth the money, especially if you already use a KeePass database and are looking for an iOS(or Mac) manager. The only thing I was slightly disappointed in was that the family plan is not shared between iOS and macOS. But, a dev’s gotta eat. Would love to see an incentive in the future for a discount on one OS if you already bought the family plan on the other. Food for thought.
I don't write app reviews, but I'm doing so for this one. Huge kudos to the developer of this app. I've spent months researching, reading, and testing a massive list of tools in search of a LastPass replacement - and Strongbox is that and more. It's the perfect blend of security and utility/useability. The dev and their team are responsive to questions and suggestions, and the active folks on their subreddit have been very helpful. The icing on the cake is the offering of a lifetime license versus subscription pricing. And this gets me to the root of this review -- I prefer non-subscription apps because I hate feeling like I'm being held hostage, but subscription products mean steady, stable revenue for developers (especially small teams or independent devs). This is the one and only app I have that I will enthusiastically continue to "tip" the dev for - because it's just that good.
I've been using some type of keepass database for as long as I've been maintaining passwords and as time passed I found less and less cross platform unity. On Mac things were one way on iOS another. I even paid for full versions of password managers which were discontinued. Seriously considered cross platform alternatives like 1Password, Dash Lane, etc., but couldn't wrap my brain around not having any control over the actual data, their cloud and retention policies, etc. Also dispised the ever increasing monthly fees. When comparing Strongbox I was super impressed with it's robustness and features. No problem at all sharing the database or app with family members. Already spread the word amongst my friends and some have already transitioned away from their password managers. Well done Strongbox team!
I’ve searched far and wide and FINALLY found the app I was looking for. A reliable, easy to use and universal password manager. I’ve trialed just about every related app on the App Store and none fit the specs I was looking for just as perfect as StrongBox did. Main features that make it noteworthy: Optional subscription fee (one time, very reasonable price) Family Sharing option Easy to use data entry New Password creation Local or cloud storage/backup Cross platform compatibility - I sync my KeePass database to iCloud Drive, easily openable with KeePass on Windows via iCloud Drive installed. Updated frequently! Incredible support with fast responses! And much more! I would highly recommend Strongbox over every password manager on the App Store! Great work dev(s)!! Thank you very much!
I had been using Strongbox for several years and wanted to upgrade to the pro version. It was unclear that my free version allowed upgrade purchases. As a result, it appeared that I must download the pro version from the App Store in order to purchase a one year subscription that I wanted. With the pro version downloaded, I was able to select and pay for the one year use of the pro version however, I then received both charges on my credit card: one charge for the one year pro subscription and another charge for the lifetime pro subscription. With the help of Apple support I canceled the lifetime pro subscription charge. The product labeling could be improved to make the selected subscription more obvious.
A huge thank-you to the creator of Strongbox, as it perfectly fills a need for those of us who use password managers on the Mac ecosystem but aren't interested in Cloud solutions and never-ending subscription models (that don't offer any other choice). I've been using 1Password since at least 2009, so I was not eager to move away. I want a local vault that I sync locally between my devices, and I was able to do that through 1Password 7. Like others, I am also against the never-ending subscription model as well. Strongbox checks all of these boxes. I've been using it for around a year now and it's only improved in that time. Highly recommended!
We have Strongbox Pro on our iPhones and Macs (separate purchase needed) and I can tell you this app is, hands down, the best! I used to use Keepass. I then tried to access it on an iPhone - had to start using mini-Keepass. Well that was OK, but not great. My wife, who's Ok technically speaking, didn't use strong passwords hardly at all because that mini-Keepass was just too hard to use. With this app (and face-id), she uses it all the time! We keep our database file in icloud (shared) and we both enjoy the ability to open the same file regardless of which device we're on. We are now starting to auto-generate our passwords for a lot of sites that require accounts. You don't need to remember dozens or hundreds of passwords anymore. I know there are features I haven't mastered yet, but I hope to soon. If you value your security - get this - AND - apply multi-factor on everything you can. Thank you for this wonderful tool. Managing access to our sites would be super painful without something like this!
I’ve been on a mission to find a replacement for previous password managers, specially as they started becoming subscription based and requires you to use THEIR servers….yuk! Strongbox syncs with with private servers so a) you don’t depend on third parties b) less risk of being hacked (well known sites with hundreds of thousands of customer information are far bigger targets than having to go after individual users) and c) it seems to be rock solid on all my clients. I do wish it had more “organizational” layout support rather than just name/value pairs and a “notes” area but I can live with reliability and privacy
-Some times when internet connection is not stable takes a while for the app to detect it, wasting your time with spinning window. -Sometimes the autofill on iPhone fails and on Mac shows unrelated passwords. -No Windows app. -I also would love to have Passkey/Yubekey Webauthin login as an alternative in addition to MasterPassword/TouchID which is currently more not working than it is. Other than that, it’s almost perfect, probably the best no-vendor-lock-in app out there, that supports KeePass open DB format, so you keep control of your passwords, unlike others.
What’s not to love? Open standard data format, not locked away by some company more interested in money than security. Great features. Apple style user interface. Constantly being developed and updated. Responsive support from the developers. My only regret is I’m forced to use applications that aren’t so good on other platforms, but like I said, the data files are cross compatible, so I get to use it on my apple devices. If you’re considering a password manager, this should be one of your finalists.

With any of the other ones, you are subject to some companies cloud security procedures. your passwords may or may not be safe depending on if they feel like having some security that week. This one has all of the same features as the big guys but lets you store your passwords more securely on your own terms! Its kept up to date and the password database file can even work across mac and PC. This is simply the best one out there!!!
This is the KeePass app I’ve needed for years. I’ve used other really good apps, but they all struggled with syncing databases, especially with OneDrive. I’ve been using StrongBox for over a year and it has never had an issue syncing. It has a great UI and handles TOTP well. The MacOS client is the best KeePass client experience on iOS or Mac and I’ve used KeePass for over a decade. I am begging for a Windows client and would be happy to pay another lifetime license for the privilege.
I've been a KeePass user on my PC for almost a decade but having taken the leap a few years ago to an iPhone and strugging for far too long I'm happy to have found StrongBox. Previously on my Mac I was using KeePassX but development stalled. Yes I could have and did try using mono to run KeePass on my Mac but it was just a pain for daily use. While I've only scratched the surface of features, it has proven its worth so far with just the simplicity of integration between my phone and my Mac. My PC still uses KeePass and the database syncs without issue just as I wanted. I'll update my review once I've had time to dig into the weeds but from what I've seen the developer of StrongBox is quite responsive and that's a HUGE deal and something that shouldn't be overlooked. The password manager I used to use moved to an electron app for macOS and transitioned into a subscription service. I’m always trying to curtail my subscriptions and avoid using electron based apps when I can, so it was pretty obvious to me it had to go. I bounced around a few other popular services until I eventually discovered Strongbox and I can’t imagine myself going elsewhere. If you’re familiar with quality native macOS apps like BBEdit, Transmit, Alfred, and the like that’s more or less the experience you’ll find here. A well built and well maintained macOS (and iOS!) app that has the support of a small team who care and clearly love what they do. Thank you for working on this app, these types of apps are far and few between. Truly a gem.
Pretty happy with the transition but it’s not as intuitive as I’d like. However it is feature rich and I am still learning its intricacies more than a month in. The database doubling up after an export is a bit confusing but can easily be deleted. Would like a place to put notes and non login credentials so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for that. Pretty bummed there isn’t a windows app as I’m transitioning to windows from a Mac so I’ll have to figure that out. Overall, I’m happy to be here. Cheers!
I have been through many password programs over the years. Some were good but disappeared. Others were good but took directions that didn’t suit me. I like Strongbox as much as any of those previous ones at their finest moments. In fact, I have been very impressed with its attention to detail. I sure hope it lasts, and stays as good (for me) as it is now.
This app has all of the encryption you could ever want/need.
Support is super fast on responding to your questions, even before you purchase it. For me that’s a huge plus. Shows they take pride in their work. I’ve had a few other DataVault apps, but not as secure as this one or received support as quickly. So if anyone is looking for security/peace of mind that your information is secure check it out. Easy to use.
I know its just a password manager but its been so great to use. FaceID unlock, compatible with browser auto fill, can be used when creating new accounts to generate strong passwords, database backups on cloud provider of choice, built in audit and PWN checks, and a LIFETIME pro upgrade option instead of subscription-only. Easiest $80 I've spent.
Outstanding program - yes. Outstanding support - yes. Outstanding developer - yes. I have used all the password managers starting with 1Password. Still like 1Password but after having trouble with safari integration for months I started looking around. Finally settled on Strongbox and have been very happy. It works extremely well on mac and iOS with sync.
This app and it’s developer are amazing! It’s entirely open source, seamless when transitioning to macOS and the Google drive sync allows me to use whatever else I want on other machines. Genuinely one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I hope the developer continues their excellent work, I’ll be sure to try and support them even after my lifetime purchase.
I had been using the free version for six months or so before purchasing the family license. Both are well worth it! I love the integration with password management on my iPhone, and support for cloud storage platforms. Makes it so easy to use. Easy enough for me to win the kids over to using a password manager, and that says something.
This is one of the few programs, for iOS, and macOS that is a must have, especially if one is dealing with more than one OS, and needs to have passwords available via a KDB file on Windows or Linux as well. It interoperates perfectly with other platforms, and works quite well. The biggest thing is that it supports 2FA TOTP codes, which is a great help.
So many things I don’t have time to figure out and so many needs and suggestions. just wish I could customize! Just wish I had time to state the obvious! I need to actually set the auto fill to work. I need to not be prompted every time on my own phone. I need to set default behaviors. Thinking of writing a fork of this.
Been using this app for a while, mainly for syncing OneDrive backed key vaults. Works well with yubikeys, the virtual hardware key feature is very handy if you only want to use your hardware key to initially set up Face ID. The developer responds very quickly when I have issues.
My mistake for previous rating, I was able to get it working to share amongst the family. It was error on my part and none towards the app itself. Developer was quick and responsive as well. Strongbox is best KeePass app for the Apple ecosystem hands down. I have both the mac and iPhone apps. It’s so easy to use!

I used to use 1pwd until they went to SaaS storing info in the cloud. Keepass has come a long way since 10 years ago and strongbox is a superb app for keepass here on iOS. I’ve been using it for over 2 years now and it is worth every penny.
Went from the free version the KPXC without cloud access to the paid version. I love the dice option on the mobile. If it exists on the Pro I will use it religiously the support staff responded within 12 hours for my import issues.
I used right click/copy password every day. Now it is buried in an extra menu. It makes logical sense to group the items to be copied, but it is a password manager - of course we are copying passwords 99.9% of the time. Please bring back the separate Copy Password (no big deal if it is also in Copy Field) or make it an option at least for us that use it. This is what I hate about app stores - I now can't go back to the version I liked.
Just bought and it is worth the money. Had some questions and response was rapid and solved my query. Easy to use and like the multiple options available with the pro version. Best password vault for iOS I have used.

It‘s a really nice KeePass Manager. I can keep my DB in my owncloud and have access from everywhere. With FaceID very convenient. Didn‘t miss any features yet. Really great app, so I purchased the Pro version after couple month. No regrets! Thanks for this great App!
I was a longtime user of 1Password but switched to Bitwarden after design changes at 1Password. I then had a subpar experience with Bitwarden. When researching alternatives I came across Strongbox Pro which I can confidently say is the best offering on the market.
When 1Password switched to subscription only, I went on a hunt for a replacement. Strongbox handles (almost) all of the functionality I used from 1Password, with the exception of credit cards. My favorite feature of Stronbox: its ability to use self-hosted SFTP storage. The developer is very responsive to questions and suggestions. I'm looking forward to buying future versions when the devloper adds compelling features. A much better approach vs. renting software on a monthly basis.
I love the app. Used to have to deal with syncing databases on different systems. This can access most cloud services. The usage and integration into the iOS is great. I don’t usually like to pay a lot for any app, but I paid for the full version because it’s worth it and it’s a necessity.
I’ve used this for a few years now. I absolutely love how easy it is to use. There’s a lot harder things within the app. However it’s so user friendly. I appreciate the creation of this app. I really like how I can just store everything on the device and or upload a copy of it to my computer/or a cloud even. I just wish I could find a notes/cloud type storage exactly like this here. I look. But can’t find one. Overall thank you for this app.
New Strongbox user here. Left another app because it had an annoying bug that hasn’t been fixed in over a year. Strongbox is great! Everything I need…just works. There are no surprising things that don’t work correctly, and no weird screen display issues. All the menus are easily understood and easy to find. It’s clear that the devs put a lot of careful thought into it. Thanks so much for this awesome app.
I am one who came over from 1Password. I was a customer from v 1.0 Once they went to a subscription and took away the sync location choice I was done. I also had a friend who 3 months ago on my advice bought 1Password and could never get it to work for him, so I researched and pointed him to Strongbox. He is quite satisfied with its was of use.
