The interface is not very intuitive, but once I watched the tutorial videos, I could finally start to see the tremendous potential this app has as a practice tool. Seems strange that you can only set the screen orientation when you first open the app - it would be nice to be able to switch between portrait/landscape while it is open. As a jazz trombone player, I also wish the range for bass clef practice patterns could go up higher than a G4. I would typically practice patterns up to F5 or so. Other than that, it's fantastic. An extrememly useful resource for anybody studying music theory or composition as well as an excellent practice tool.
There are occasional stability issues, and sometimes you can’t remember where you saw that cool feature, but this app, along with Tonal Harmony Pro by mDecks, is absolutely essential for well versed musicians. You don’t have to be a jazz cat. You can be a stoner doom metal head and come away with tons more knowledge and love of music and how it all mysteriously works. These apps all invite creative exploration, which can lead to wonders. Do yourself a favor and buy this app, and Total Harmony Pro, now. The best musical experience education out there. I can’t praise developer highly enough.
Love the mobility and experimental aspects of this app. Great scales and shapes to play with. Lots of Messian structures to try, along with the basic modes and such. Layout is alittle confusing, some things are spelled wrong (Musically and the way some are written. "Dorain #9"?) Would love an update in the guitar panel, as Its impossible to navigate while all notes in the corresponding scale you select luminate at the same time while moving. After some time I can construct the typical 3 note per string run, but for students this may be alittle daunting. Maybe consider adding a "position" option for those who want to digest each scale piece by piece along the fretboard. Like I said, fantastic app, great for experimenting if you already know your common scales/modes, and fantastic for learning the basics too. Make this THE scale app for teachers and students by including user friendly functions and expanding. Has lots of potential!!
This app has a lot of potential but in my opinion there are a couple things that make this mostly something that I won't use very much. First, when choosing a scale as a main structure it does not show you all the triads available. You first have to choose what type of triad you are searching for, then it will show you only that triad. It seems like a miss to not see all the minor and major triads listed without going to the browser. Second thing is melodic patterns. There is no option to force chord tones on beat 1, or beats 1&3, etc. this makes patterns sound ambiguous instead of outlining a chord.
This is an extensive app, great for theory and practice. Watch the tutorials and demos to see all the that it does. Simply endless and brilliant. The simple yet effective graphing of the scales and how you get all the related modes by just rotating the graph around the circle is brilliant. I've been looking for an app like this for a long time. If you want to understand and practice scales this is the app. I can practice any scale in any mode, even scales I did not know existed. The circle of fifths with the scales in it is awesome. And the patterns are really useful. The fact that this app does not have thousands of reviews, puzzles me. I guess people just want to play games on their phones It is among the best apps for scales and modes I've seen.
Hello There. I've been mdecks musical materials user for years now. I find Tessitura Pro resourceable. But Its lack of developers support (several months now) have discouraged me as a frequent user of this creative "circle of fifth app". I can't explain why in my Ipad Pro, the interface shows a second circle. It is anoying and unbearable (from both aesthetically and mathematically points of view). I wrote this, because nobody answer my emails about the issue.
I give this two stars because it does have a ton of information that is useful. Or COULD be useful were it not so difficult to use. I am extremely well versed in musical terminology so that’s not the problem. The problem is the interface. It makes absolutely no sense how you get from one page to another. You have to actually study the app in order to study the music. Not worth it to me.
I am so excited. These mdecks apps seem to be about the most powerful tools for learning music that I have ever encountered. All for a few bucks. My only regret is that I didn’t have these resources 30 years ago.
The app provides lots of content, just the interface is clumsy and not intuitive. It feels like a chore to use. For example.. first glance at the guitar neck view and you get the idea. An needed improvement... if the user could customize a workspace ..or create several to guide the scope of what you they want tot work on. For example. Show a scale mode in whatever key and the chord triads that go with it..
I’ve always wanted to make an app to explain music via color and geometry. It’s just so mind numbingly brilliant how music can explain everything in life and this app is a direct interface for the means visualize it
The app is very well thought out and informative but, the layout and design can be very easily confusing for first timers. Great work. You should make a chord progressions app also.
There’s an ungodly amount of great information in this app, but with such a terrible interface, no learning tools, or introductory information to help understanding exactly what you’re looking at, the app can’t be said to be worth the price. Only buy if you have a solid foundation of music theory already held in mind.
I was almost swayed by the negative reviews. I’m glad I wasn’t! Outstanding in every way! This is an amazing musical study tool written by musical geniuses!
Impressive but not very practical, it is a chore to use. At this stage I don’t see the benefit of having an app for things that should probably just be learned in your head. Cool Swiss Army knife though...
Great app. The only problem is that the limit for the note range on the bass clef is only up to a G above the staff. I've had to use the treble clef feature in order for the scale patterns to extend to the top of my range.
I've been studying out similar ways of looking at the chromatic universe. Studied the entire sequence of harmony at Berklee many years ago, and consider myself a lifelong student of harmony. It is a never-ending endeavor. I'm also a painter who uses limited palettes of color. The parallels are amazing. Tonal Mapping is very close to Gamut Masking of the 12 hue color wheel. Being an artist of multiple disciplines (writing/poetry is the other) is helped when you can connect the dots. When I found this app, I found someone else who is mapping tonality. Almost like there's a Camaraderie or a Jazz Harmony brotherhood. Great app!
This app has become an indispensable learning and teaching tool for myself as well as all of my colleagues. Tessitura is something that every professional and aspiring musician should own and reference. It is not often that you find a resource that deals with this type of material in such an indepth and informed manner. The material is presented in this app is presented in a clear concise and easy to understand manner. Great app!
I am a casual, skilled guitarist that has been playing for 20 years. This app has thrown open the door to a full understanding of how scales and modes actually work. It presents such a wealth of information simultaneously that after an initial 20-30 minutes of curious exploring, and comparing & contrasting, your brain will begin to see this unbelievably complex subject in a way that makes sense to YOU.
Very useful. I certainly recommend this app for students and teachers as well. The concept is amazing. Love the circle of fifths graphs and how modes are found by turning the graph around. The best feature is the use of patterns to create exercises for any scale or mode. I would really like the developer to add the main chord playing in the background while I practice. That would make this app the best ever. Please?
Tessitura is a musical knockout! It is by far one of the most valuable tools for any musician looking to improve his playing and his understanding of musical structures and their practical applications. Kudos to mdecks for continually developing the means by which all musicians can realize their full potential.
The issue below was fixed by an update, and I appreciate the attention. It still needs improvement on the ease-of-use. App crashes after I change the clef to Bass on the assistant. Also incredibly difficult to learn, not intuitive at all. Needs work!
I like the layout, You could really benefit greatly from this app if it would stop crashing, geez!!...UPDATE: Seems to be working fine now. Loads of fun and very helpful!
I purchased this app and it crashed when changing to bass clef. I gave it one star. Within a few days, I got a response and it was fixed. That is great support!
This is a great app for educational purposes, but I fell that, to make it even better, there should be a quiz/test feature or something interactive to help you learn more.
The world of scales and modes may look like a jungle to a Jazz improvising beginner: intimidating, hard to navigate, and frustrating to the point where it may cause one to give up. This application has converted that jazzy jungle into a playground, with near limitless opportunities for the aspiring jazz musician. It includes all possible modes and chords per scale/pattern that you may be analyzing in the app, and gives you information about what modes/scales/triads sound best over what chords. The app gives exactly what it advertises, and I would recommend this to a music educator to pass down to his students in a heartbeat. The only reason I give it a 4 star rating out of 5 is due to the apps formatting. It appears to be on the right track to achieving a simplistic navigational system that is also aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but there are still a few things that need to be adjusted to make this a 5 star music educational tool. (Note: they do have their own tutorial video channel on youtube on how to navigate the app, but if it can get to a point where it is more simplistic and eye appealing without sacrificing functionality and user freedom, it will be a music education super tool.) I'll be using this app for a long time. excellent job Tessitura app developers!
There's seemingly a lot of information packed into this app. However, it's confusing, unintuitive, unattractive, and most importantly lacks ANY kind of tutorial, instructions, or overlay, explaining the features and functions. What are we supposed to do? Just tap on everything we see until we figure out how it all works? Even the preview movie (in the App Store) is confusing. This is a lazy, horrible approach to app design. I purchased this app, expecting there to be an in-app tutorial. Boy, was I wrong. Buyer beware!
This is an incredible app to practice scales, modes and patterns. The approach-notes concept is a really nice feature if you are a Jazz player as me. I suggest watching the tutorials and the demos on how to use the app if you want to take full advantage of all the cool things this app has to offer, like browsing modes, symmetry, finding upper structures, etc. Well done! Thanks.
I don't even know where to start to use the app and start learning anything... it's too complicated and yea it's for the "advanced" user but to figure out how to use the app is a whole lesson in itself already
Does not spell chords correctly- i.e. C augmented is spelled C, E, Ab in this app. However, the correct spelling is C,E,G#. I also noticed that diminished chords have errors. Makes me believe the writers of this program are not educated in music theory or did not have the coding tools to do it right. In any event, this is not helpful as a legit music theory tool until this is corrected.
The idea of and the concept of this app is truly great. I believe it could help with learning music and music theory, but I'll never know because it crashes every time I change a setting.
Well the app does have a lot in it, although I like the way it looks some things are mushed up and in small letters. Hopefully and update comes soon where this can be fixed. The app does also take you to YouTube for tutorials on how to use the it plus help with the music theory If you are new to it.
