Seemingly perfect, but only in iOS
Amendment: Since there is no way to rate the Mac version of this app, I am lowering my rating here. There are two kinds of VPN apps for Mac - 1. those that can adapt to the macOS limitation that makes it hard for the app to reconnect after the OS screen is unlocked, and 2. those that cannot. Mozilla VPN for Mac takes so long to reconnect that it is actually much faster to manually stop then relaunched the app. It is awful. Original review: Mozilla is doing its best work in phone apps these days. (Firefox Focus is great.) The Mozilla VPN iPhone app is far better than the macOS version, which is unreliable. The iPhone app’s connection never drops, data transfer is fast, there are no DNS leaks, the UI is simple and easy to use, and the app uses no measurable power while the phone is asleep and almost none when it’s in use. Since I don’t use streaming services at the moment, I don’t mind Mozilla VPN’s inability to unblock some of them. An exemplary app.

Used to be great...
I first purchased and downloaded the Mozilla VPN app over a year ago and for the first few months it worked great. However after an iOs update last month the VPN began disconnecting on its own as others have noted. Worst part is that no notification is given that the VPN has disconnected so you have to check it frequently to see if it is still connected. Keeping the app open worked for a while to keep it connected but now even that doesn’t prevent the VPN from disconnecting on its own. I contacted Mozilla support and they had me uninstall and re-download the app but that didn’t work. They then had me send them my VPN logs. They finally came back and just told me they don’t have a solution and offered to give me a refund. It seems they have just given up on fixing this issue. It works great on my laptop though...but not on my iPhone. I guess i will need to find a more stable VPN provider.

Reported Mozilla to government
Mozilla contracts out vpn services. And One of its vpn severs in America routed the traffic to China. (Mozilla has no china vpn servers) . I discovered the Mozilla vpn server was actually a China owned server in America. Only reason i found out is because I knew Yahoo ended business in China. And while using American vpn locations I got a yahoo error message page that said I can no longer access yahoo and that yahoo was no longer in China. But I was using a u.s to u.s connection. Upon investigation, I learned exactly where the China Mozilla server was in America and I learned that China still had a cute China name for it ( in Chinese) . All because it didn't have the right settings. It routed my traffic through China . And if Mozilla replies that all of the traffic is encrypted then why is Microsoft discontinuing support for older computers (without the NSA cpu instructions) . Some experts say the encryption is broken Edit : the screenshot was sent to the NSA.

Works Just Fine, But...
I know iOS doesn’t allow for a kill switch, but if I can get notifications when I enable/disable the VPN, why isn’t there a notification for when it drops on its own? I’m repeatedly finding myself checking to see if it’s still enabled, and there have been too many times that I’m checking after browsing social media, only to find I was doing so with no VPN enabled. If there can’t be a kill switch for data, can there at least be a notification for when the VPN disconnects on its own (which seems to happen every 12-36 hours, lately)?

Extremely unreliable
I like Mozilla / Firefox, and I also like what I can gather about their “mission” / purpose. I choose to go with their VPN specifically to support them. However, after one year of using this VPN, I’m finally going to start paying less money for a VPN that actually works. As of the date of this review, I find that whether or not you’ll be able to access websites or stream media / music with the Mozilla VPN turned on is about the equivalent of rolling dice. Will it work today? Maybe. Tomorrow? Maybe not. There is no consistency and therefore no reliability with this app. Tech support will reply, but with more questions than answers. I paid way too much to have so little benefit from this, and it costs more than other, top-rated VPNs. Good luck and also shame on you, Mozilla. This is taking your reputation way down. I do hope it improves, but not at mine / others’ exense.

Mozilla respects their users.
Most software companies these days throw users into the fire and provide a few web pages they can read to try and extinguish themselves, but Mozilla clearly spent a lot of time making their VPN a clear and understandable app that also provides advanced functionality. Additionally, I can tell the development team is constantly assessing user feedback and rapidly iterating based on it. I submitted a survey recently that mentioned it would be convenient on desktop to not need a browser to sign in, and seemingly someone actually read that and changed it so good on ya Mozilla. Paid or free, Mozilla products are always worth it.

Love this VPN
I have always been a fan of Mozilla and their mission. This is just a better version of the other popularly advertised VPNs on the market. I’ve been using the app for six months and I haven’t noticed any of the issues mentioned in the older negative reviews. My one complaint is the lack of a “dark mode”, which is not just for preference, it is also a pretty basic accessibility feature. I really dislike looking at an all white screen. Due to my profession, I often work in total darkness. Having to open an app to an all white screen is jarring and unpleasant, even with the brightness turned all the way down.

Reliable Connectivity after recent Update
I signed up during the time when connectivity was still spotty but I figured there were still kinks to work out given that they were also still working on Mac OS support. I don’t regret it though. Ultimately solid VPN. Does what it should. Plus the spotty connectivity was resolved with the latest update. Before the update, I would have to disconnect and reset the connection whenever I would be in and out of service areas or if the phone was locked for a prolonged period of time, but now it just picks back up right where I left off. I knew Mozilla wouldn’t disappoint.

Great when it works (UPDATED)
UPDATE: After this recent update, the app is working great and as expected! PREVIOUS REVIEW: I love Mozilla and what they stand for which is why I wanted to use and pay for their VPN service. I haven’t had an issue with the desktop version. On this mobile version however, I have to connect and disconnect from servers multiple times before I can use it reliably. When it works, it works great. But I shouldn’t have to jump through unnecessary hoops to use the service I’m paying for. I will continue to use it because I love their mission, but I hope this gets fixed and becomes more consistent soon.

Occasional issues, mostly fine
This VPN comes after testing several others that came with their own issues and this so far has been the best. There might be a better one, but no major issues here. Speed, simplicity, working with other apps, and ease of login all put it high on my list. Security and privacy of the parent company is hard to beat. The worst issue is that it sometimes won’t turn off and I have to go into the system settings and disable all VPNs. This is rare but annoying. Apart from that, it’s worked fine on my windows and iOS devices.

Mozilla as always … the best
I really don’t want to jump up and down about Mozilla, because if you use it you already know. But for those that haven’t been through the evolution of Mozilla you should check it out. It was the best at every upgrade. This is no different , a relevant reliable extraordinary product from this amazing company that I trust to protect my privacy and my computer. They have been doing it for me maybe longer than you have been here. Ok I’ll jump up and down , in my mind …. Cheers

Good, with some flaws
Love most of the app. My only problems are speed and the difficulty to keep it up all the time. Running speed tests (wifi) my speed plummets from about 600 Mb/s to about 50 Mb/s when I turn the VPN on, which isn’t too bad, but if that ratio is true for slower connections, that would be problematic. The bigger problem is that the VPN turns off after a certain amount of time, and I have to manually turn it back on. I haven’t figured out a trigger for the VPN turning off, but I feel that I shouldn’t have to always nudge it to be sure that i’m protected and private.

Doesn’t work on my iPhone 12?
So I have been having nothing but problems ever since I got a iPhone 12. I had a iPhone 11 & never had any problems with it? I can’t use any app to either create or login into a existing account? I have called Apple care for nothing? So now I am stuck paying for a iPhone 12 I can’t use. Figured I would try adding this VPN to my iPhone! Like typical I can’t even use a app I just paid a yearly bill for? I have been to spectrum internet services because I got it from them. They can’t troubleshoot it? Why even sell it then? Anyway just another pic on my screen with another app I can’t use!! Very disappointed because it would definitely be great to use a phone I’m paying for!

Go Mozilla!
The app is really good and integrates well with IOS. In terms of VPN’s this is probably one of the better options on the market and is backed by Mozilla. Connection is good, especially for a VPN. Sometimes my school wifi won’t work with the VPN but that has more to do with my university than the VPN itself as no vpn works. When outside of my university I always have this VPN on and it got a good connection and doesn’t hinder my internet performance over wifi or cellular.

Inoperable for iPhone 12 Mini (iOS 15.0.1)
The mobile app is stuck in a loading screen loop. There is no way for me to enter my Mozilla credentials in order to activate the VPN for my mobile device (iPhone 12 Mini/iOS 15.0.1). I have contacted support and am awaiting their response. In the meantime I have uninstalled/reinstalled the app, changed browsers (and browser settings), and have tried using only my cellular data and WiFi, respectively. Nothing has remedies the issue, so there must be a glitch regarding the app. If I am able to effectively use the VPN on my iPhone I will be more than happy to revise this review to reflect the progress made. Until then, I have to give this app one star.

Accessibility improvements
So far, this is a good VPN. It runs good and everything, but navigating it with voiceover is extremely difficult. I am blind, so I have to use this screen to navigate around my phone, so it gets really hard when apps don’t have good accessibility. Signing in is easy, as is everything for getting it set up, but after that, going into the settings, doing literally anything else, including turning the VPN on and off from the app requires the screen recognition feature. please fix this

Drops randomly
i appreciate mozilla as an organization, but the ios version of the vpn drops randomly without notice, and there’s no way to configure it to start when i turn my phone on. The mac version works totally fine, i can configure it to startup when i turn my laptop on and it doesn’t drop. I just wish the ios version worked as well. i actually used mullvad vpn directly before this and never had any issues (both have flat rate pricing models). I’m likely to switch back to mullvad, and may revisit mozilla in the future if it gets more reliable.

Fast, needs an “always on” VPN configuration option.
To the developers, overall I’m impressed with the connection speed. I’ve always loved Mozilla products. However, I’m a bit surprised that for a VPN there is no option for an “always on” configuration. I hate that I have to turn that on each time I restart my device or any time connection is lost. That’s the only reason this gets 3 stars from me. I’m still testing it out for a few months, if this option isn’t added in the near future I’ll probably switch back to Proton VPN.

Great service, but app needs work to improve utility
I love using this on my desktop platforms (Mac windows and Linux) but on iOS and iPadOS it’s extremely frustrating to see that it only stays on for a couple hours at most it seems. It will silently turn itself off in the background and more often than not, when I pull out my phone or iPad it will be disabled without any notification. It’s a great service, but the app really needs some work – at the very least it needs to generate a notification when disconnecting in the background, if the actual problem came be easily resolved.

excellent service
After extensively testing multiple VPN options available in the market (many during their trial periods), for my case, I've found that this VPN stands out as the best choice. I've evaluated various aspects including speed, ease of use, and success rate in accessing specific software/services, and this VPN excels in all these areas. Mozilla, Keep up the great work! (btw a fan of your browser ^ ^)

A VPN Deal For The Price
I’ve had no issues thus far. It is reasonably fast. The user has to try different cities for best speeds. There are a pretty limited number of server locations but it gets the job done. The app will not automatically find your optimal connection as Nord does and you cannot select from different servers at a destination but for basic VPN needs its all there. It works as advertised and the price is a steal. I’m waiting on the Mac version.

Connectivity problems persist
Like others, I wanted to support Mozilla, but the connection will just drop without warning (worse in the evening), which makes it unusable, particularly when you need a dependable connection (meetings, banking sessions, etc.) I followed all the recommendations on Mozilla’s help section, to no avail. It looks like the issue is with the servers themselves, suddenly becoming “unavailable”. Very disappointing.

Support a good non-profit and the only non-sketchy VPN
Let’s be honest - the VPN industry is sketchy and riddled with scandal, unethical marketing, and shady corporations. Mozilla is a non-profit with a literal DECADES long track record of supporting privacy and open-web/open source principles. It’s not the cheapest, doesn’t have the most servers, and maybe not even the fastest (although it’s very fast) but it’s on a very short list of VPNs I am willing to put my money behind.

Good product
I’ve been using this app for a little while now and I’m generally very pleased. My only complaint is sometimes I have to take down the app because a different app I want to use won’t recognize me with it up. I think it has to do with the feature that masks my IP address. Luckily, the app is compatible with the banking I need to do, and that was one of my primary reasons for getting it. Well worth a try.

VPN is faulty
I know you typically see 2-3 star reviews as throwaways but hear me out. This VPN has the potential to be great. I can bounce from city to city, country to country. When it’s working, it’s good. The problem is the connection is faulty. At times, it will say not connected (to wifi or to cellular data). Sometimes it’s on, sometimes it’s off. I use it on several devices. Lastly, on my laptop, it stopped working. I redownloaded it and it still doesn’t work. Maybe later this can be “wonderful,” but right now, it’s just not there.

😔 I tried …
I’m a big fan of Mozilla and I wanted to like this VPN. But it simply could not connect, or stay connected, enough to be useful. It’s so confusing to tell what’s going on between the little “VPN” notification at the top of my iPad vs. iOS settings VPN status vs. the UI in the Mozilla app. So often they were inconsistent and most importantly, not actually connected to VPN. Sometimes I’d get logged out for no reason too. Very frustrating. Meanwhile I had a rival VPN installed and quite often it worked instantly… and even while connected with the other VPN, Mozilla still said “trying to connect” within their app. In fact, I could even put the iPad in airplane mode and the Mozilla app thought it was still trying to connect. I’ll keep my eyes on the product, maybe it will improve. But for now I just need to find something more reliable.

The most versatile and reliable VPN
I have used a number of VPNs, and Mozilla VPN ties with only one other VPN for reliability and dependability, but it is superior for me because it works with more different operating systems. Other VPNs have consistently proven to be unreliable in that they would stop functioning without ever providing any hint of their failure. Mozilla VPN has NEVER failed me.

Easy to use VPN
Mozilla VPN has been a solid VPN solution for me. I appreciate the global options and there are some nice built in features like the speed test. 4 stars because the app didn’t work correctly on install. I reached out to support and was assisted and the app connection issues were resolved. Apps (paid!) should work upon install but luckily support was helpful.

Very good for price point
So far, I’m happy to have this very affordable tool available - particularly at public Wi-Fi spots like coffee shops and airports. If you don’t understand why that is important, I would advise you to just cut to the chase and purchase this inexpensive peace of mind. Then, invest the time in the research you have avoided on encryption algorithms and the pro/con of one hop or two. This is a wise move.

Ignore the negative reviews!
I have had many VPNs, before they were cool! And I have to say that Mozilla VPN has great options on the app and doesn’t throttle or slow down when using it. I use it across all my devices and the price is unbeatable! I may be biased as I prefer any Mozilla product as what they stand for, but hey this VPN gets the job done!

A Perfect VPN
It is very easy to turn on/off and select the location you want to mimic. Internet speed is fast. What more could you ask for? It’s a great price too. I’ve used several other VPNs they required a year’s payment in advance. This is just as good or better. Highly recommend!

Fast but has issues with turning off randomly
I like the simplicity and speed for my basic VPN needs. However, about half of the time I check the app (a few times a week), the VPN has turned off without my doing anything, and there is no way to tell how long it’s been off for. Am I supposed to leave the app open all the time? Big fan of Mozilla but not a fan of this product until this issue is fixed.

Better VPNs out there
Issues connecting, takes a lot longer than other VPNs. If you want to just switch your location for shows or movies this is the VPN for you. If you want to encrypt your data, try other ones, as there’s only a handful of USA servers which I believe is the cause for the long connection times Overall, not really worth the 9.99/mo they charge.

If it just turns off after a few hours... what's the point?
I love Mozilla. I wanted this app to be great. And it could be, except for the one, glaring flaw. After a few hours, it just silently turns off, without giving you any kind of notification or warning, and you have to turn it back on manually. How they decided that it was a good idea to release a VPN with a silent auto-shutoff feature is beyond me. If this is what their VPN offers, what's the point?

Good speeds. Difficult to use.
Like other reviewers, I’m happy to support Mozilla and the speed of connections are good. However, browsing locations for connections is tedious. The disconnect toggle is not responsive, which makes turning off the connection very frustrating. I’m leaving Moz for a different provider but hope to be back when when the service is more developed.

No Connect on Demand
The Mozilla VPN app does not support Connect On Demand. This is the feature that will automatically reconnect to the server upon disconnect. For a privacy-oriented VPN, this is a non-starter as it means you can leak your connect any time the VPN disconnects. I don’t know why the app doesn’t support it considering Mullvad does (and Mozilla is piggybacking on Mullvad servers). I want to support Mozilla through this app, but without this feature, I’ll be returning to Mullvad directly.

Not on older iPad minis, well on newer devices

Not working on iOS 16
Upgraded to iOS 16 and the app doesn’t work anymore. It will say it’s connected, but no web pages load and all network activity stops. Tried reinstalling the app and changing DNS settings & location to no avail. When this happens, turning off the VPN doesn’t even work and I have to toggle airplane mode on and off to get any internet/network back. I tested other VPN apps with iOS 16 no problem, it’s just Mozilla VPN that is doing this and I paid for the year service.

It’s pricey, but the easiest VPN I’ve found. Installs and works properly right away, At first, I was worried about laxity in blocking ad. But I can use Adblock’s DNS. Works great. Best to deselect uploading data to Mozilla — read its privacy statement. Now if Apple would only open Safari to tougher extensions, especially fingerprinting countermeasures.

Truly GREAT app and VPN with one exception: I will happily make this review 5 stars when the iOS app has AUTOSTART and AUTO-CONNECT, key features for busy folks. Horrible app, vpn just doesn’t work properly
The vpn is the most unstable I have ever used. Why is it so hard to TURN OFF the vpn sometime??? It literally gets stuck on ON. Hence the cycle of frustration of using this app. I love Mozilla and everything they stand for but this isn’t it.

iOS app is okay. macOS app has a bad install experience that Support is aware of but has not addressed. Overall it will work with a unique Mozilla Account but is designed to use your Firefox Account where other services like bookmarks syncing are stored. If your uncertain, consider trialing Mullvad VPN directly since it is currently the service underlying Mozilla VPN.
