NVIDIA SHIELD TV

After I connected to my Nvidia Shield the app had no problem automatically connecting every time I reopened the app. The mouse is a bit jumpy & it will randomly disconnected every few minutes. It does controls my entire Shield & works with multiple 3rd party apps without me having to use my remote, just a few bugs to fix then this would be a great app.

This used to be an excellent app! After a recent update it has really gone downhill (as can be seen by recent reviews). - Ability to start directly in the remote has been lost. You are always greeted with shortcuts to apps first (this might be preferred by some, but there should an option for where you start) - MOST IMPORTANT: Connection issues. If you lock your phone with the app open or return to the home screen and then back to the app, you receive a connection lost message. To recover you must either return to your list of shield devices and connect again or return to the homescreen again and switch back to the app, where 90% of the time it will recover and reconnect. This is frustrating and unnecessary. It causes a long time delay in scenarios where quick volume or playback (pause/play) changes need to be made, etc.. I used to consider this app 4-5 stars. It now gets 2 and that's pushing it.

In order to connect I need to manually type in the IP address whenever I pull up the app. I thought it was just because my phone was connected to WiFi and the shield was a direct Ethernet connection, but even after switching the shield to the same WiFi as my phone it still requires me to type in the shields IP address into my phone. An IP address is pretty cumbersome to remember and type in anytime you want to use the remote. To be clear it doesn’t even remember the IP address after closing the app. I literally have to type in my Shields IP address each time I want to use the app. App has a couple other smaller issues too: The “mouse click” automatically opens what you click on. Sometimes I’d just like to select something and there’s no option to do that unless you use the buttons. The mouse doesn’t scroll on the home screen to anything beyond the first screen. A double finger slide should allow you to scroll around the page.

This is far & away superior to the generic AndroidTV remote. Some posters here mention that this app doesn’t control volume. My new 2017 Nvidia Shield uses IR on the remote to control my Sony TV volume, and since I’m not aware that my iPhone has an IR transmitter I doubt that is possible. Two suggestion though, first, ability to paste copied text into the screen. Also when I was loading a game from Nvidia Game Store, there was a prompt that this game required a keyboard & mouse, and alternately I could download this Nvidia TV app. I’m not much of a gamer, I was basically exploring everything included with Shield, but it was not intuitive of how the keyboard and mouse within this app could control the specific keys, and mouse movements on the game I tried. However, it seems like it would be easy to include another screen with only the keys necessary for that game, and/or buttons for multi key presses, and a trackpad. Maybe I overlooked something, but It was just too difficult to use this app for gameplay, although I will primarily use this app for entering long strings of texts.

I had my shield form they released the first version years ago. I was disappointed that there was no official app at the time. I’m so happy my phone can finally work with my device after all these years. It’s flawless even without the volume control at this time. Well worth the wait, it can only get better with some time and updates. Thank you NVIDIA for a product that is as relevant and reliable as it was when I first purchased it years ago. This thing is seriously still out performing devices just coming out to compete with it. LOL

This app used to be a 5-star app. It worked flawlessly. For the last few months (I believe ever since the most recent update), every time I open the app, it says “connection lost.” Then I either have to do one of two things: 1) I can minimize the app, wait two seconds, then re-open it (and it magically reconnects just fine), OR 2) I have to click “got it,” then click my computer’s IP at the top (which is still there from before), and then click “Remote” to get back in. Either way, something extremely annoying & irritating is happening ever since the last update. It should be staying connected just like it used to. And no, the issue is not my network or anything else. I’m sitting right next to my router and the Shield is close by as well.

It would be perfect if it actually connected more than 50% of the time. Much like the Shield unit itself (see Nvidia Shield’s recent loss of access to much of Steam), this app continues to let me down. Also, the touch pad is extremely difficult to use with precision, and the sensitivity of it can’t be changed. Oh, and the those 5-star reviews that are suspiciously featured so highly on the app main page are either delusional or outright lies. When the remote app loses connection, it CANNOT be fixed by simply downloading updates (because they don’t exist) or rebooting the app. Only rebooting the actual Shield unit works and this usually entails a hard reboot (pulling the power cable). First and last Nvidia product I’ll ever own.

There’s no way to determine where devices are on or off with app. I have a total of 5 devices through out My home. And everyone has a tendency to go to bed an leaving them on. I have to stand in front each device to determine it actually went off. If power tab had a color to it when chosen device is on or off as a visual indicator in app would help tremendously. 3 floors and 5 devices can be quite the workout. Would like the ability to stay in one position and turn each device off and know they are off with confidence. That would improve My rating significantly. Thanks.

So this app isn’t perfect, but I’m kinda surprised by the amount of 1-star reviews. In my experience, the app works like 90% of the time (and most of the times it doesn’t work it can be fixed by either checking for an update or rebooting my phone). Being able to use my phone as a keyboard/mouse is a HUGE plus as it lets me operate a ton of side-loaded apps, which greatly extends the functionality of the shield tv. Overall I really like this app, and best of all it’s free haha. I appreciate the work that the devs keep putting into this. Cheers guys.

By far a really good design! I love the app. It gives me a chance to charge my remote and use my phone! Or if in all honestly if the remote is too far to rich I can just open this awesome remote app to control the shield! One suggestion is the developer gets to read this, it would be a complete remote app if the feature of controlling the volume by simply sliding your finger the same as the remote and controller would wrap up this app! But other then that really recommended to check it out!

Besides the things already mentioned, after I connected the app to my TV, now I can no longer use the onscreen keyboard on my Samsung TV. When I click on an option (for example, search); it tells me to use my app keyboard. Well that is great for me, but not for the others living in my house who are either technology challenged or don’t have smart phones. Can it be updated to pull up the onscreen keyboard still OR let you use the keyboard in the app? Other than that and volume, I think it’s a great app

Version 2.1 of the app is an excellent upgrade - it connects to my Shield TV much faster/more reliably, and the app launcher is nice. Only two complaints: - Entering passwords is difficult. Please give me a text box so I can copy from LastPass on my phone and then paste onto the TV. - When launching an app, it says "App launched succeeded", which isn't great English. It should be something like "App launched successfully" or "App launch succeeded".

This app is the perfect companion for the Nvidia Shield, except for the fact that it often isn’t able to connect the shield. The app became completely useless after I updated my shield to 8.0. Now when I open the app it says there’s a new version and I need to download it. I’m redirected to the App Store which has the same version that hasn’t been updated in 7 months. I gave it 2 stars because as I stated at the beginning, it works well when it actually connects.

Love that you can launch apps directly from the tiles in the app and has volume control. The Bluetooth pop-up on every launch though gets annoying, as well as the play/pause button being too low and getting hit everytime I swipe from the bottom to do the home gesture.

I love my shield TV, probably the best entertainment device that I have invested in. This remote is all I use and is well thought of. I had been using the d-pad and realized there was an option for a swipe pad. Awesome! Also can open apps right through the app.

I really like the app but recently been having issues with connectivity. It keep disconnecting and reconnecting. Overall really like the app better than using the remote because I can type when searching and if you’re like me you’ll lose that little remote easily lol

I lose my remote all the time. The find remote function saves a lot of frustration. The app can be wonky when used as a remote, but again, it’s worth having or at least temporarily downloading for the “find my remote” feature.

This app was very unreliable about a year ago, frustrating the user as a result. But since update 2.0, the reliability of connection has gone up. Hoping to see the app experience getting better with future updates!

The NVIDIA shield tv is an awesome device keeping on giving even years after the release (only the included WiFi chip is subpar the rest of the devices performance). This remote is a nice addition especially since the original remote is sooooo easy to loose in the couch ;-) But please add volume control and a mute button to make this perfect.

My remote got caught in the couch somewhere... It just slid into a blackhole in the middle of the couch never to be seen again. But the good folks at Nvidia made this life saving app to get you in back in control of your box using your phone. Simple as that! Thank you Nvidia for your awesome support to your customers!

The review I left yesterday about an update issue seems to be fixed and the app has updated correctly. However, now the app is acting very laggy and when I click the buttons for the virtual remote, my tv doesn’t respond. When I used a different app that I prefer not to use, it worked fine. Please fix

I’ve been waiting for this App for a couple of years now!! I love it and it works great but how the heck do you forget to put a Volume Control on. Lol. This is the equivalent of Microsoft removing the start button or Mac removing the Apple icon menu! Can we please get an update with a Volume Control. In regards to everything else I love this app!! Thx

I would really hope to see volume controls implemented.... and as others have mentioned has issues finding device on LAN at times, actually I don’t think I have ever found it via DHCP. I don’t mind staticly assigning an address, but at times that even has issues, which I find odd.

I loved this app! I really did. That is until the last update. You can uninstall and reinstall, it will work. Lock your phone and then it never connects again. And yes, I double checked the IP address and even put it in manually several times. And yes, I’ve restarted my Nvidia Shield, turned off and on the WiFi and Bluetooth. Nothing works. Please fix this and I will gladly download again and change my rating.

Thanks Nvidia for releasing this app; it improves so much on the useless official google tv app and makes it so much easier to input text on the apps and a joy to navigate in the settings menus.

The only thing that I can say is some time it Disconnects and reconnects. Other than that it’s been pretty perfect. It maybe needs a update IDK

As of when the app launched it does not have volume control, does not connect to my setup automatically at least, and it does not wake up the SHIELD TV. Although I may be uninformed about the last point, these are he only reasons holding this review back from a 5-Star.

Nvidia keeps having my reviews removed, this is now the 3rd time writing one for the same version of the app. Now my nvidia pro won’t play audio, everything is in slow motion sound wise. Absolutely no fix for this issue, tried resetting, hard rebooting, and multiple other possible fixes. Nothing works, this thing is basically still in beta.

Not sure how this app is not a beta and/or why the “devs” pushed it to the store because this app contains significant bugs. The worst of them being the “infinite scroll bug”. When this happens it’s as if you are sitting on a physical remote and long pressing the down scroll button. Anyways, it’s pretty pathetic coming from a piece of software with the shield branding attached to it.

Been waiting for something like this. Using your phone as a track pad and keyboard for the shield is awesome. Need to add two finger scrolling in the track pad and voice search though for it to be 100% complete and perfect though. Then it will be 5/5

I’m very impressed with this update. The swipe pad feels natural and the volume and power button is very natural. I love the applications that shows up in the menu so you can got straight to what you want to do. Well Done Nvidia!!! 😎👍🏾

It did really well and seems last couple of months it doesn’t want to work very well and gets stuck so mashing buttons I have all this stuff happen minutes later! 🤦🏻‍♀️

The new update added some cool features I like the volume and shut off buttons, im always misplacing the small remote control but now it the app I don’t have to go crazy looking for that lil remote

Pretty good remote. Only suggestion is that it’s be more convenient to use if it had a control center widget so that one could quickly change volume, turn tv on/off, etc without going into the app.

One of the feature people need is the ability to paste your password from your iPhone “clipboard” I have a long password and not having the paste option is a headache

I really wanted this to work. I updated my shield as the app recommended and tried to pair. Nothing. I tried connecting to the IP address. Nothing. Save yourself the trouble. Don’t waste your time like I did. This app is dead. Edit: it started working… 4 stars I enabled debugger and turned on usb debugger Edit 2: occasionally works. This app is trash. This is the last Nvidia shield I buy.

This is so much better than the Minix I bought with my Shield, when it actually connects. Bums me out so bad when I have to reach for the old one nightly. Also add volume! Edit: it rarely connects now. Don’t even know why I open it to try. Such a bummer. Edit: wife’s and my app completely stopped working today. Bummer cuz toddler stole other remotes.

It’s great! Downloaded, opened and it found my Shield. My shield is on Ethernet but my iphone “of course” is WiFi and they are working great. Whoever said it doesn’t connect has other issues. Thanks for the app!

After pairing it works fine for a couple hours, but after being away for a few hours the app just shows “offline” and doesn’t connect anymore. That should’ve been sorted out first. Volume control is non existent but if I can’t connect to the shield it doesn’t matter anyway.

Constantly disconnects from the Nvidia shield and has an annoying bug when using the SwipePad, it would just stay stuck pressing a directional arrow and won't respond unless you close the app and connect to the Nvidia shield again.

It connected to my shield the first time I opened the app. After using it for 30 seconds, I locked my phone and since then it has never been able to connect to the shield again, even after restarts of both the shield and the app. It can find it, it just won’t/can’t connect. Waste of phone space

Natively controls my Shield TV much better than anything claiming to do the same but missing volume control.

After a couple of years constantly fighting with the device and app I am giving up and going back to Roku. The device sleeps and loses connectivity and it can take an hour of fiddling with things to get it back up and online. The app is useless. The remote control is dunious. Very disappointing effort from Nvidia. I expected more and its now apparent that they have dropped this product from development or even basic support. Sold their stock a while back and I think that was the best decision possible. Avoid the device and this app. Save yourself hours of frustration.

Pretty good but missing some things nd could be optimized better. Main thing bothering me with it is no volume control. There’s a few apps not even from nvidia that will control the shield and adjust volume. Only reason I keep them on my phone

I did not know this app existed. My remote and controller is dead. This app is way too faster than remote. So far so good. Loving it.

So worked perfectly before. Since the update it won’t even open anymore. Which is a bummer because this app was pretty handy.

I would have given this app a 5 star rating but after the last iPhone update and app update it no longer works. Will not find my nvidia shield. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app to make sure it wasn’t a glitch. Fix the app and I’ll write an update.

The application features are improving, but getting the error connection lost every couple of minutes is maddening. I have the Shield connected with CAT6 and my phone has full bars and is not more than 20 feet from my router. Every other wireless app works flawlessly. Please fix the constant drops.

This app is obnoxious. Whenever you minimize the app on the phone and then come back to it to pause for something (like when the phone rings), you have to go through the reconnect process. Why can’t it just stay connected??!? It’s such an irritating problem. Other than that, it works great.

I use this app from time to time and it just is very frustrating. It disconnects often sometimes five seconds sometimes one minute. There's no way to open the app and go directly to the remote. I feel like I'm moving backwards in technology using this shield. Nvidia could do better this app is an afterthought.
