After the announcement of Dark Sky shutting down I started looking for a new more minimalistic weather app. Was surprisingly hard to find but finally stumbled upon Open Weather and it was a perfect fit. Well almost perfect… the only addition I would like to see is push notifications for severe weather alerts. That is the only downside I can find with this app. I have to keep apple's default weather app installed just to make sure I get those alerts.
Very very happy with OpenWeather. I'm coming from Dark Sky and this app is the spiritual successor as far as I'm concerned. CARROT Weather is trying hard to scoop up Dark Sky users but CARROT is a beast of an app with so many unnecessary features and a dizzying number of customization options. Plus it would be $40/year for my wife and I just to get the cheaper subscription tier. CARROT can be customized to look exactly like Dark Sky (if you pay at least $20 per person per year) and they have the best radar by far but I much prefer OpenWeather. CARROT may have a sassy talking robot but OpenWeather has more personality in the sense that the app designer had a strong opinion of what the app should be rather than just throwing every conceivable feature and customization option at the wall. OpenWeather has almost no settings (just units and favorites) which is unheard of in apps today but I really appreciate that minimalist decision. Fewer settings is easier for devs to improve upon and much more user-friendly so long as the app has been thoughtfully designed. Just like Dark Sky, OpenWeather is a very good weather app that made a conscious decision to stay simple instead of giving in to feature requests and scope creep. One last comparison, OpenWeather lets me see the weather from earlier in the day and even CARROT can't do that.
Was sad to hear that Dark Sky, who was bought out by Apple, is to be closed down by end of 2022. I’ve looked at many different weather apps, they are mostly too complicated and confusing; also most have gone to a monthly charge for their service or ads. “Openweather app” is clear, uncomplicated, and highly localized. There are limitations like only allowing six locations, and less than clear rain notice like Dark Sky has (had). However, on balance this is the best I’ve found with good localized accuracy (did I mention NO adds)!
I love the visually-pleasing minimal style of the app. It’s simple, sleek, and useful with no annoying ads; I see enough potential that I actually wouldn’t mind having an option to help support further development for even more added features like a radar sometime in the near future. I really enjoy the dark-mode and the widgets, they are indeed a nice touch. My only complaint I can really think of is the lack of landscape mode for the iPad app, but other than that it’s simply great!
It’s not bad when you compare to other Weather Apps which are filled with tons of Ads and the interface is clean and simple similar to how Dark Sky was before Apple took over. The only feature lacking in this App is the Weather Radar it’s probably due to the cost of aggregating weather radar information across the U.S. so if your a person who doesn’t mind the lack of a Weather Radar this app might be for you.
Love the minimalist, easy to read interface! I hate all the ads in the major weather apps which slow their loading time and this is a great alternative to those. Like many others, the lack of a map keeps this from getting 5 stars. The easy to read hourly forecast and “precipitation within the next hour” features make the map less necessary though.
I’ve used a number of weather apps, and this one is one of the nicest for forecasts and conditions. Unfortunately, the iPad app doesn’t sense the orientation mode so it doesn’t work in landscape mode for those using it in landscape mode. Hard to believe that functionality is missing in 2021! Would be a five stat app otherwise. Hoping they add radar soon as well.
This is one of the most visually pleasing weather apps I’ve seen. All the information is presented in a very clear fashion. (The layout reminds me of the default iPhone weather app, which is not a bad thing at all!. That is my “litmus test” that I compare new weather apps to). I was wondering if there are any plans to add support for Apple Watch complications, and Widgets for iPhone/iPad? Beyond that, this is an almost perfect app, and will definitely be my “daily driver”.
I use the website a lot for weather forecasts and I love they have an app for that website. I’m not sure that this is an app fault but the website and app have quite different weather forecasts and current conditions. I am happy though that you can now change the pressure unit!! Edit: Also, can you maybe add more of the website into the app (for instance, could you add the radar and the hourly wind speed)?
Recently discovered this app and found out it is the source for some weather apps. Wish it had radar and precipitation push alerts along with AQI. Then I’d say it would be a pretty complete app. Seems pretty accurate so far.
H/T to the development team. This is an excellent WX information app and, of the many I have ‘collected’, has become my primary source. One modification suggestion would be to list additional location information when searching if there are multiple city matches. Thank you for bringing this to the App Store.
I like this app a lot.. especially the minimalist design. But the various icons for sunny, cloudy, rainy etc aren't easy to differentiate. The "few clouds" symbol looks almost like the "rain" symbol. And why is the sun even included on a symbol for rain? "Overcast clouds" looks the same as "drizzle". And what's the difference between a "shower rain" and "rain"? The symbols should be easy to differentiate at a glance. The only symbol clear in its meaning is the one for sun. And lately it has been WAY off on temperatures! It displays temps 40-50 degrees LOWER than reality!
The only thing this is missing is radar, but the hourly forecast and easy to read precipitation chance in the next hour mean I don’t actually need it. Thanks for making my life simpler and providing such a great service.
This weather app is great! THANK YOU for making a weather app that is lightweight and not loaded down with ads and subscriptions and tons of other junk. I find this app to be accurate and nicely/cleanly laid out.
This app is EXACTLY what I needed, simple, clean, easy to read graphs of precipitation and temperature. I can see when it’s likely to rain, and how the temperature will vary through the day. I can’t believe how rare this is in a weather app, and I am so thankful for OpenWeather now!
Easy to setup and use. I love the interface, very intuitive and displays information in a very comprehensive and coherent manner. I only have one issue - visibility ALWAYS shows as 6.2 miles regardless of location.
I previously gave this app a poor review because reports for my location were flawed. I wrote the developer who identified the source of the bad data and removed it. Reports for my area are now accurate. The app is superb in every other way.
The OpenWeather website has a radar though... if the OpenWeather app had a radar, then this would be the perfect minimalist weather program. Apple's official weather app has so much visual garbage, and frustrating to use.
This is a delightfully minimalistic weather aggregator app but why on Earth can’t the Devs create a landscape display option (other reviews made this request over a year ago)?? For me, this lack is a sad deal-breaker. Devs, if you can do this, let me know and I will gratefully update my review accordingly. Thanks in advance for making it so👍
Hello, I don’t review often, but your team seems quite responsive… my local low temp seems off quite a bit, about 30 degrees. I’m not sure if your systems are gathering accurate info in my area. Thank you!
All of the references to the Dark Sky app are odd. I don’t see similarities in form or function… other than OpenWeather providing basic weather data. This is a minimalist weather app with basic features and info.
Do not use this app or buy a paid version of it - if you run into any problems - the support will be pinging you back and forth asking you questions instead of providing any answer to a very direct question. Wow. What a waster of time.
This is the main thing I look for in a weather app. I am very disappointed to find this app doesn’t have it, as it is otherwise good. But this is a deal breaker for me.
This is a great weather app... here are a few things to make it better -include a radar -space out the user interface, it seems a little cramped -add millibars to pressure unit options -did I mention to include a radar?
During snow forecast, it doesn’t report inches of snow, it reports inches of rain. Not very useful. Also, the forecasts are kind of questionable up here in the Pacific Northwest.
